This paper sets forth three mismatch properties, strictly ordered in strength, about sewings of crumpled n-cubes. The strongest is a sufficient but not a necessary condition for a sewing to yield Sn, and the weakest, a necessary but not sufficient one. We show that when both crumpled cubes satisfies the Disjoint Disks Property, then the weakest property implies the sewing yields Sn, and we also show that the intermediate property leads to the same conclusion when just one of the crumpled cubes possesses the Disjoint Disks Property. In addition, we develop examples that confirm sharpness of the relevant Disjoint Disks conditions.  相似文献

Let C denote a crumpled n-cube in the n-sphere Sn such that every Cantor set in its boundary is tamely embedded in Sn. The main theorem shows C to be universal in the sense that however it is sewn to a crumpled n-cube D of type 2A, a large class containing most of the explicitly described examples, the resultant space is homeomorphic to Sn.  相似文献

Let M denote a connected (n+1)-manifold (without boundary). We study laminated decompositions of M, by which we mean upper semicontinous decompositions G of M into closed, connected n-manifolds. In particular, given M with a lamination G and N, a locally flat, closed, n-dimensional submanifold, we determine conditions under which M admits another lamination GN with N?GN. For n ≠ 3 a sufficient condition is that i: NM be a homotopy equivalence. For n > 3 we give examples to show that i: NM being a homology equivalence is not sufficient. We also show how to replace the assumption of local flatness of N with a weaker cellularity criterion (n ? 4) known as the inessential loops condition. We then give examples illustrating the abundance of pathology if M is not assumed to have a preexisting lamination.  相似文献

Given a metric continuum X, let X2 and C(X) denote the hyperspaces of all nonempty closed subsets and subcontinua, respectively. For A,BX2 we say that B does not block A if AB=∅ and the union of all subcontinua of X intersecting A and contained in XB is dense in X. In this paper we study some sets of blockers for several kinds of continua. In particular, we determine their Borel classes and, for a large class of locally connected continua X, we recognize them as cap-sets.  相似文献

It is shown that each separable metric, not totally disconnected, topological space admits a superextension homeomorphic to the Hilbert cube. Moreover, for simple spaces, such as the closed unit interval or then-spheresS n , we give easily described subbases for which the corresponding superextension is homeomorphic to the Hilbert cube.  相似文献

The hyperspaces of hereditarily decomposable continua and of decomposable subcontinua without pseudoarcs in the cube of dimension greater than 2 are homeomorphic to the Hurewicz set of all nonempty countable closed subsets of the unit interval [0,1]. Moreover, in such a cube, all indecomposable subcontinua form a homotopy dense subset of the hyperspace of (nonempty) subcontinua.  相似文献

The hyperspaces of strongly countable dimensional compacta of positive dimension and of strongly countable dimensional continua of dimension greater than 1 in the Hilbert cube are homeomorphic to the Hurewicz set of all nonempty countable closed subsets of the unit interval [0,1]. These facts hold true, in particular, for covering dimension dim and cohomological dimension dimG, where G is any Abelian group.  相似文献

For a Tychonoff space X, we use ↓USC(X) and ↓C(X) to denote the families of the regions below all upper semi-continuous maps and of the regions below all continuous maps from X to I=[0,1], respectively. In this paper, we consider the spaces ↓USC(X) and ↓C(X) topologized as subspaces of the hyperspace Cld(X×I) consisting of all non-empty closed sets in X×I endowed with the Vietoris topology. We shall prove that ↓USC(X) is homeomorphic (≈) to the Hilbert cube Q=ω[−1,1] if and only if X is an infinite compact metric space. And we shall prove that (↓USC(X),↓C(X))≈(Q,c0), where , if and only if ↓C(X)≈c0 if and only if X is a compact metric space and the set of isolated points is not dense in X.  相似文献

Denote by σ the subspace of Hilbert space {(xi)?l2:xi=0 for all but finitely many i}. Examples of cell-like decompositions of σ are constructed that have decomposition spaces that are not homeomorphic to σ. At one extreme is a cell-like decomposition G of σ produced using ghastly finite dimensional examples such that the decomposition space σ?G contains no embedded 2-cell but (σ?GR is homeomorphic to σ. At the other extreme is a cell-like decomposition G of σ satisfying: (a) the nondegeneracy set NG={g?G:g≠point} consists of countably many arcs (necessarily tame); (b) the nondegeneracy set NG is a closed subset of the decomposition space σ?G; (c) each map f:B2σ?G of a 2-cell into σ?G can be approximated arbitrarily closely by an embedding; (d) σ?G is not homeomorphic to σ but (σ?GR is homeomorphic to σ. The fact that both conditions (a) and (b) can be satisfied (and have (d) hold) is directly attributable to σ’s incompleteness as a topological space.  相似文献

The 0-stitched disks property is introduced and shown to detect codimension one manifold factors of dimension n?4. It is shown that if a space X is an ANR and has the 0-stitched disks property, then X has the disjoint homotopies property. It follows that if a space X is a resolvable generalized manifold of dimension n?4 with the 0-stitched disks property, then X is a codimension one manifold factor. Whether or not the 0-stitched disks property is equivalent to the disjoint homotopies property remains an open question.  相似文献

This paper represents a survey concerning cell-like decompositions of manifolds. Primarily it summarizes the status of results and problems describing when the product of E1 with such a decomposition space is again a manifold, and more generally it discusses conditions under which the product of two such decomposition spaces is also a manifold.  相似文献

We construct n-dimensional counterparts of manifolds modeled on the space ?2 equipped by the bounded weak topology (-manifolds). For -manifolds we prove the characterization, triangulation and classification theorems. In addition, a universal map of onto Q (the countable direct limit of Hilbert cubes and Z-embeddings) is constructed and characterized.  相似文献

R. Pol has shown that for every countable ordinal number α there exists a universal space for separable metrizable spaces X with trindX?α. W. Olszewski has shown that for every countable limit ordinal number λ there is no universal space for separable metrizable space with trIndX?λ. T. Radul and M. Zarichnyi have proved that for every countable limit ordinal number there is no universal space for separable metrizable spaces with dimWX?α where dimW is a transfinite extension of covering dimension introduced by P. Borst. We prove the same result for another transfinite extension dimC of the covering dimension. As an application, we show that there is no absorbing sets (in the sense of Bestvina and Mogilski) for the classes of spaces X with dimCX?α belonging to some absolute Borel class.  相似文献

We detect Hilbert manifolds among isometrically homogeneous metric spaces and apply the obtained results to recognizing Hilbert manifolds among homogeneous spaces of the form G/H, where G is a metrizable topological group and H is a closed balanced subgroup of G.  相似文献

Our main interest in this paper is further investigation of the concept of (PL) fibrators (introduced by Daverman [R.J. Daverman, PL maps with manifold fibers, J. London Math. Soc. (2) 45 (1992) 180-192]), in a slightly different PL setting. Namely, we are interested in manifolds that can detect approximate fibrations in the new setting. The main results state that every orientable, special (a new class of manifolds that we introduce) PL n-manifold with non-trivial first homology group is a fibrator in the new category, if it is a codimension-2 fibrator (Theorem 8.2) or has a non-cyclic fundamental group (Theorem 8.4). We show that all closed, orientable surface S with χ(S)<0 are fibrators in the new category.  相似文献

In this paper, we investigate several properties of maps from a compactum X to an n-dimensional (combinatorial) manifold Mn. We introduce the notions of stable point and locally extreme point of map, and we prove a higher-dimensional Bruckner-Garg type theorem for the fiber structure of a generic map in the space C(X,Mn) of maps from a compactum X with dimX?n to an n-dimensional manifold Mn (n?1). As applications, we also study the spaces of Bing maps, Lelek maps, k-dimensional maps and Krasinkiewicz maps in C(X,Mn).  相似文献

Various local connectedness and compactness properties of topological spaces are characterized by higher degrees of distributivity for their lattices of open (or closed) sets, and conversely. For example, those topological spaces for which not only the lattice of open sets but also that of closed sets is a frame, are described by the existence of web neighborhood bases, where webs are certain specific path-connected sets. Such spaces are called web spaces. The even better linked wide web spaces are characterized by F-distributivity of their topologies, and the worldwide web spaces (or C-spaces) by complete distributivity of their topologies. Similarly, strongly locally connected spaces and locally hypercompact spaces are characterized by suitable infinite distributive laws. The web space concepts are also viewed as natural extensions of spaces that are semilattices with respect to the specialization order and have continuous (unary, binary or infinitary) semilattice operations.  相似文献

Roe [J. Roe, Lectures on Coarse Geometry, University Lecture Series, vol. 31, Amer. Math. Soc., Providence, RI, 2003] introduced coarse structures for arbitrary sets X by considering subsets of X×X. In this paper we introduce large scale structures on X via the notion of uniformly bounded families and we show their equivalence to coarse structures on X. That way all basic concepts of large scale geometry (asymptotic dimension, slowly oscillating functions, Higson compactification) have natural definitions and basic results from metric geometry carry over to coarse geometry.  相似文献

The main result of this paper is that if X is a Peano continuum such that its nth cone Cn(X) embeds into Rn+2 then X embeds into S2. This solves a problem proposed by W. Rosicki.  相似文献

In this paper we prove that a surjection between metric compacta is a hereditary shape equivalence if and only if it is an inverse limit of trivial Q-bundle maps. This result was conjectured by T.B. Rushing. Near-homeomorphisms are instrumental to the proof.  相似文献
