Kinetic studies on ring-closing metathesis of unhindered and hindered substrates using phosphine and N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-containing ruthenium-indenylidene complexes (first and second generation precatalysts, respectively) have been carried out. These studies reveal an appealing difference, between the phosphine and NHC-containing catalysts, associated with a distinctive rate-determining step in the reaction mechanism. These catalysts have been compared with the benzylidene generation catalysts and their respective representative substrates. Finally, the reaction scope of the two most interesting precatalysts, complexes that contain tricyclohexylphosphine and 1,3-bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene (SIMes), has been investigated for the ring-closing and enyne metathesis for a large range of olefins. Owing to their high thermal stability, the SIMes-based indenylidene complexes were more efficient than their benzylidene analogues in the ring-closing metathesis of tetrasubstituted dienes. Importantly, none of the indenylidene precatalysts were found to be the most efficient for all of the substrates, indeed, a complementary complex-to-substrate activity relationship was observed.  相似文献

Two new dimethylvinyl carbene complexes, RuCl2(SIMes)(PPh3)CHCHC(CH3)2 and RuCl2(SIMes)(3BP)2CHCHC(CH3)2, were synthesized from RuCl2(PCp3)2CHCHC(CH3)2. Complex RuCl2(SIMes)(3BP)2CHCHC(CH3)2 does not suffer from the problem of incomplete initiation that has been observed for the other dimethylvinyl carbene complexes, as witnessed by complete and rapid reaction with ethyl vinyl ether. Acyclic diene metathesis (ADMET) polymerization of 1,9‐decadiene with these complexes was found to give polymers with chemical and thermal properties similar to those obtained with Schrock's molybdenum catalyst. These complexes are also catalysts for ring‐opening metathesis polymerization. The parent complex RuCl2(SIMes)(PCp3)CHCHC(CH3)2 was found to give polyoctenamer with high initial heats of fusion, suggesting a dependence of the “as formed” crystallinity of the polymer on the rate of the ROMP reaction. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A sulfur‐chelated photolatent ruthenium olefin metathesis catalyst has been equipped with supersilyl protecting groups on the N‐heterocyclic carbene ligand. The silyl groups function as an irreversible chromatic kill switch, thus decomposing the catalyst when it is irradiated with 254 nm UV light. Therefore, different types of olefin metathesis reactions may be started by irradiation with 350 nm UV light and prevented by irradiation with shorter wavelengths. The possibility to induce and impede catalysis just by using light of different frequencies opens the pathway for stereolithographic applications and novel light‐guided chemical sequences.  相似文献

Imidazolium salts (NHCewg ? HCl) with electronically variable substituents in the 4,5‐position (H,H or Cl,Cl or H,NO2 or CN,CN) and sterically variable substituents in the 1,3‐position (Me,Me or Et,Et or iPr,iPr or Me,iPr) were synthesized and converted into the respective [AgI(NHC)ewg] complexes. The reactions of [(NHC)RuCl2(CHPh)(py)2] with the [AgI(NHCewg)] complexes provide the respective [(NHC)(NHCewg)RuCl2(CHPh)] complexes in excellent yields. The catalytic activity of such complexes in ring‐closing metathesis (RCM) reactions leading to tetrasubstituted olefins was studied. To obtain quantitative substrate conversion, catalyst loadings of 0.2–0.5 mol % at 80 °C in toluene are sufficient. The complex with the best catalytic activity in such RCM reactions and the fastest initiation rate has an NHCewg group with 1,3‐Me,iPr and 4,5‐Cl,Cl substituents and can be synthesized in 95 % isolated yield from the ruthenium precursor. To learn which one of the two NHC ligands acts as the leaving group in olefin metathesis reactions two complexes, [(FL‐NHC)(NHCewg)RuCl2(CHPh)] and [(FL‐NHCewg)(NHC)RuCl2(CHPh)], with a dansyl fluorophore (FL)‐tagged electron‐rich NHC ligand (FL‐NHC) and an electron‐deficient NHC ligand (FL‐NHCewg) were prepared. The fluorescence of the dansyl fluorophore is quenched as long as it is in close vicinity to ruthenium, but increases strongly upon dissociation of the respective fluorophore‐tagged ligand. In this manner, it was shown for ring‐opening metathesis ploymerization (ROMP) reactions at room temperature that the NHCewg ligand normally acts as the leaving group, whereas the other NHC ligand remains ligated to ruthenium.  相似文献

Olefin metathesis is a transition metal‐mediated transformation that rearranges the carbon atoms of the carbon–carbon double bond of olefins. This reaction has become one of the most important and powerful reactions. Therefore development of new, well‐defined, highly active and selective catalysts is very desirable and a valuable goal. This mini‐review mainly introduces the development of ruthenium catalysts in olefin metathesis highlighting oxygen‐chelated indenylidene ruthenium catalysts. Applying an alkoxyl group on the indenylidene ligand fragment can generate the Ru ? O chelating bond. Additionally, various modifications of the ligand as well as the catalytic activity for ring‐closing metathesis reaction and selectivity of cross metathesis reaction are overviewed. Finally, the perspectives on the development of new catalysts are summarized. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The data reported in this paper demonstrate that great care must be taken when choosing an appropriate catalyst for a given metathesis reaction. First-generation catalysts were found to be useful in the metathesis of sterically unhindered substrates. Second-generation catalysts (under optimised conditions) showed good to excellent activities toward sterically hindered and electron-withdrawing group (EWG)-substituted alkenes that do not react using the first-generation complexes. A strong temperature effect was noted on all of the reactions tested. Interestingly, attempts to force a reaction by increasing the catalyst loading were much less effective. Therefore, when possible, it is suggested that metathesis transformations should be carried out with a second-generation catalyst at 70 degrees C in toluene. However, different second-generation catalysts proved to be optimal for different applications and no single catalyst outperformed all others in all cases. Nevertheless, some empirical rules can be deduced from the model experiments, providing preliminary hints for the selection of the optimal catalysts.  相似文献

The synthesis of Ru-based precatalysts with N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands bearing syn- and anti-methyl groups on the NHC backbone and aryl N-substituents with differing steric bulk was carried out. The catalytic behavior of the monophospine Ru precatalysts (7a, 7b, 8a, and 8b) was compared to the corresponding family of phosphine-free catalysts (9a, 9b, 10a and 10b) in the ring-closing metathesis (RCM) of olefins. These catalysts showed high efficiency in RCM reactions and the syn-isomers 7a and 9a, in particular, proved to be among the most active catalysts in the formation of tetrasubstituted olefins through RCM. DFT studies on the entire RCM catalytic cycle of hindered olefins were performed to rationalize the different behaviors of catalysts with syn- and anti-methyl groups on the NHC backbone. Theoretical results not only disclosed how NHC symmetry influences the overall activity of the catalyst, but also gave relevant and more general indications on the crucial steps of the RCM of olefins.  相似文献

In asymmetric olefin metathesis reactions, the addition of halide additives is often required to augment enantioselectivities, despite the fact that the additives result in catalysts with diminished reactivities. The preparation of new chiral Ru-based catalysts was accomplished by exploiting previously reported mechanistic studies. The catalysts possess a high level of reactivity and successfully induce high levels of asymmetry in desymmetrization reactions without the use of halide additives.  相似文献

NHC with EWGs for RCM : Ruthenium complexes with two N‐heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs), one of them substituted with electron‐withdrawing groups (EWGs), are highly efficient (pre)catalysts for the synthesis of tetrasubstituted olefins and trisubstituted olefins by ring‐closing metathesis reactions (RCM, see scheme).

A binary catalytic system, RuCl2(N‐heterocyclic carbene)(p‐cymene)/alkyne, was developed for improved molecular weight control in ring‐opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) reactions of norbornene derivatives in organic and aqueous media. Monometallic ruthenium arene compounds were activated using aryl and aliphatic terminal alkynes to form highly active metathesis species. The effects of alkyne structure and concentration on the overall catalytic activity were systematically investigated. The catalytic activity of the metathesis active species can be tuned by varying alkyne substituents. Also, the initiation rate of the ROMP reaction can be tuned by increasing the alkyne‐to‐Ru ratio. ROMP polymers with a wide range of molecular weights (91–832 kDa) were isolated in organic media, whereas polymers with a molecular weight range of 110–280 kDa with average particle sizes of 150–250 nm were isolated in aqueous media. A study concerning the effect of using a fluorinated aromatic solvent as the medium for olefin metathesis reactions catalysed by ruthenium complexes bearing N-heterocyclic carbene ligands is presented. The use of fluorinated aromatic hydrocarbons (FAH) as solvents for olefin metathesis reactions catalysed by standard commercially available ruthenium pre-catalysts allows substantially higher yields of the desired products to be obtained, especially in the case of demanding polyfunctional molecules, including natural and biologically active compounds. Interactions between the FAH and the second-generation ruthenium catalysts, which apparently improve the efficiency of the olefin metathesis transformation, have been studied by X-ray structure analysis and computations, as well as by carrying out a number of metathesis experiments. The optimisation of reaction conditions by using an FAH can be regarded as a complementary approach for the design of new improved ruthenium catalysts. Fluorinated aromatic solvents are an attractive alternative medium for promoting challenging olefin metathesis reactions.  相似文献

The electron-donating properties of eighteen N-heterocyclic carbenes (N,N'-bis(2,6-dimethylphenyl)imidazol)-2-ylidene and the respective dihydro ligands) with 4,4'-R substituted aryl rings (4,4'-R = NEt2, OMe, Me, H, SMe, F, Cl, Br, I) in the respective Grubbs II complexes were studied using electrochemical techniques. The nature of the 4-R substituent has a strong influence on the RuII/III redox potentials ranging between DeltaE1/2= +0.196 and +0.532 V. Three unsymmetrical Grubbs II complexes with 4-R not equal to 4-R' were also synthesized. Dynamic NMR spectroscopy revealed the restricted rotation around the (NHC)C-Ru bond (DeltaG = 89 kJ mol(-1) at 333 K) resulting in two atropisomers, respectively, with an isomer ratio close to unity. Each of the isomers, that is the two orientations of the 4-R/4-R' substituted mesityl ring with respect to the R=CHPh unit, gives rise to different redox potentials (4-R = NEt2, 4-R' = Br: DeltaE1/2= +0.232 and +0.451 V). In the oxidized Grubbs II complex (4-R = NEt2, H) and in the cathodic isomer the electron rich aryl ring is located above the Ru=CHPh unit. This orientational effect provides clear evidence for strong pi-pi through-space interactions in the RuIII complexes, assuming that the alternative through-bond transfer of electron density is equally efficient in both isomers.  相似文献
