Micellization characteristics and counterion binding properties of cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) in presence of urea and a nonionic surfactant polyoxyethylene sorbitan monolaurate (PSML), and of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) in presence of urea as well as of several mixtures of CTAB with a bile salt, sodium cholate (NaC), and sodium chloride have been studied. Both urea and PSML have increased the critical micelle concentration (CMC) of the surfactants, the former being more effective than the latter. The analysis of the results supports the pseudophase micellar model to hold over the mass action model. Pure CTAB micelles bind more counterions (96 %) than pure SDS micelles (87 %), and the decreasing effect of urea on the binding is less in case of the former than the latter. A 41 mixture of CTAB and sodium cholate (NaC) can micellize and the micelles bind 87 % bromide ion, whereas 21 and 11 mixtures do not micellize. Micelles of 11 mixture of CTAB and NaCl can bind counter bromide ions to the extent of 92 %. The limiting concentrations of urea required to effect counterion binding by CTAB and SDS micelles are 0.15 mol dm–3 and 0.25 mol dm–3, respectively. Such effect is shown by PSML on CTAB at a ratio 0.281. The activation energy of conduction of SDS has increased in the presence of urea up to a concentration of 4 mol dm–3, at higher concentrations the activation energy has decreased, the effect being more for surfactant concentration above CMC than below.  相似文献

Surface tension of aqueous solutions of mixtures of dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) and dodecyltrimethylammonium chloride (DTAC) has been measured and analyzed by using thermodynamic relations. The adsorbed film has been found to contain more DTAB molecules than the solution. The shape formed by the curves of the total molality at constant surface tension against the solution and surface compositions indicates the ideal mixing of the DTAB and DTAC molecules in the adsorbed film. Micellar composition has been estimated at the critical micelle concentration (CMC). The micelles have been found to be richer in DTAB than the solution, but poorer in DTAB than the adsorbed film at the CMC. The DTAB and DTAC molecules have been shown to mix ideally in the micelles. From the comparison with the results on the system of decylammonium bromide and decylammonium chloride, it has been concluded that, on the mixing of surfactants differing only in counter ions, the adsorbed film is influenced more significantly by the ionic head group of the surfactant than the micelle.  相似文献

The counterion binding behaviour of micelles of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) and several bile salts in the pure state have been studied, as well as in mutually mixed states, and in a mixed state with polyoxyethylene sorbitan monolaurate (PSML) as a nonionic surfactant. Electrochemical measurements have shown no counterion binding by the pure bile salt micelles and their mixtures with PSML; they can bind counterions when mixed with SDS, whereas the surfactant anions of SDS micelles bind counterions in the pure state and/or in mixed states with PSML. In the SDS-PSML and SDS-bile salts combinations, the counterion association is decreased by the increased proportions of the second component. The extent of counterion binding by the different systems is presented.  相似文献

Some cationic surfactants such as cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) show a very spectacular viscoelasticity in solution, in even very diluted states, with some aromatic substances added, such as salicylic acid. Formerly, the authors established that the remarkable solution behaviour was the result of the entanglement of such enormously elongated giant micelles, based on recognition of the existence of large aggregates, through direct observation of them as substantial images under the electron microscope. In this report, we further confirm the relation between micelle length and solution viscoelasticity after arbitrarily obtaining different size aggregates by altering the media pH, or by admixing shorter chain length surfactants than CTAB, which alone did not induce viscoelasticity.  相似文献

Measurements of counterion binding in mixtures of surfactant aqueous solutions have been performed to study the structure of the anionic/cationic mixed micelle/solution interface. The mixtures studied were SDS/DDAC and STS/TDPC. The binding of chloride and sodium ions to mixed anionic/cationic micelles was measured using ion-specific electrodes. Counterion binding was found to be strongly dependent on the molar ratio of surfactants present. The mixed micelle/solution interface includes the headgroups of both surfactants and counterions of surfactant in excess. The addition of oppositely charged surfactant caused an increasing dissociation of counterions.  相似文献

The zeta-potentials of the self-assembled surface ionic surfactants (sodium dodecyl sulfate—SDS and hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide—CTAB) on graphite surfaces were determined both from streaming potential and electrophoretic mobility measurements. The adsorption of the surfactants at graphite–liquid interfaces has been studied using atomic force microscopy (AFM) soft-contact imaging which shows the formation of linear, parallel hemicylinders with headgroups oriented towards the solution. The magnitude of the zeta-potential increased with an increase in surfactant concentration, reaching a constant value at a concentration corresponding to the point of surface micelle formation as confirmed from AFM imaging. The streaming potential and electrophoretic mobility measurements showed that the zeta-potentials of SDS and CTAB surface micelles adsorbed at the graphite surface were about −75 and +70 mV, respectively, well in agreement with the values reported for bulk phase micelles in the literature.  相似文献

The self-assembly of the protein hydrophobin, HFBII, and its self-assembly with cationic, anionic, and nonionic surfactants hexadecylterimethyl ammonium bromide, CTAB, sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS, and hexaethylene monododecyl ether, C(12)E(6), in aqueous solution have been studied by small-angle neutron scattering, SANS. HFBII self-assembles in solution as small globular aggregates, consistent with the formation of trimers or tetramers. Its self-assembly is not substantially affected by the pH or electrolytes. In the presence of CTAB, SDS, or C(12)E(6), HFBII/surfactant complexes are formed. The structure of the HFBII/surfactant complexes has been identified using contrast variation and is in the form of HFBII molecules bound to the outer surface of globular surfactant micelles. The binding of HFBII decreases the surfactant micelle aggregation number for increasing HFBII concentration in solution, and the number of hydrophobin molecules bound/micelle increases.  相似文献

The interactions between an oxyphenylethylene-oxyethylene nonionic diblock copolymer with the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) have been studied in dilute aqueous solutions by static and dynamic light scattering (SLS and DLS, respectively), isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), and 13C and self-diffusion nuclear magnetic resonance techniques. The studied copolymer, S20E67, where S denotes the hydrophobic styrene oxide unit and E the hydrophilic oxyethylene unit, forms micelles of 15.6 nm at 25 degrees C, whose core is formed by the styrene oxide chains surrounded by a water swollen polyoxyethylene corona. The S20E67/SDS system has been investigated at a copolymer concentration of 2.5 g dm(-3), for which the copolymer is fully micellized, and with varying surfactant concentration up to approximately 0.15 M. When SDS is added to the solution, two different types of complexes are observed at various surfactant concentrations. From SLS and DLS it can be seen that, at low SDS concentrations, a copolymer-rich surfactant mixed micelle or complex is formed after association of SDS molecules to block copolymer micelles. These interactions give rise to a strong decrease in both light scattering intensity and hydrodynamic radius of the mixed micelles, which has been ascribed to an effective reduction of the complex size, and also an effect arising from the increasing electrostatic repulsion of charged surfactant-copolymer micelles. At higher surfactant concentrations, the copolymer-rich surfactant micelles progressively are destroyed to give surfactant-rich-copolymer micelles, which would be formed by a surfactant micelle bound to one or very few copolymer unimers. ITC data seem to confirm the results of light scattering, showing the dehydration and rehydration processes accompanying the formation and subsequent destruction of the copolymer-rich surfactant mixed micelles. The extent of interaction between the copolymer and the surfactant is seen to involve as much as carbon 3 (C3) of the SDS molecule. Self-diffusion coefficients corroborated light scattering data.  相似文献

X-ray scattering was used to analyse the structures of aggregates of CTAB in various formamide-containing media.Firstly, CTAB micelles were detected in formamide solutions. A spherical micelle model was proposed; at values close to the CMC, smaller micelles were observed in formamide than in water.Secondly, the structure of microemulsions in the isooctane-rich zone of the system (formamide/CTAB=2, isooctane, 1-butanol) was studied by X-ray scattering. The structure was found to be quite different in this zone from that normally observed in aqueous microemulsions. Structures compatible with small filaments of formamide were detected. The results were related to previous measurements of electrical conductivity.  相似文献

In the present study, we investigate the self-association and mixed micellization of an anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), and a cationic surfactant, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). The critical micelle concentration (CMC) of SDS, CTAB, and mixed (SDS + CTAB) surfactants was measured by electrical conductivity, dye solubilization, and surface tension measurements. The surface properties (viz., C20 (the surfactant concentration required to reduce the surface tension by 20 mN/m), ΠCMC (the surface pressure at the CMC), Γmax (maximum surface excess concentration at the air/water interface), and Amin (the minimum area per surfactant molecule at the air/water interface)) of SDS, CTAB, and (SDS + CTAB) micellar/mixed micellar systems were evaluated. The thermodynamic parameters of the micellar (SDS and CTAB), and mixed micellar (SDS + CTAB) systems were evaluated.

The interaction of Procaine hydrochloride (PC) with cationic, anionic and non-ionic surfactants; cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and triton X-100, were investigated. The effect of ionic and non-ionic micelles on solubilization of Procaine in aqueous micellar solution of SDS, CTAB and triton X-100 were studied at pH 6.8 and 29°C using absorption spectrophotometry. By using pseudo-phase model, the partition coefficient between the bulk water and micelles, Kx, was calculated. The results showed that the micelles of CTAB enhanced the solubility of Procaine higher than SDS micelles (Kx = 96 and 166 for SDS and CTAB micelles, respectively) but triton X-100 did not enhanced the solubility of drug because of weak interaction with Procaine. From the resulting binding constant for Procaine-ionic surfactants interactions (Kb = 175 and 128 for SDS and CTAB surfactants, respectively), it was concluded that both electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions affect the interaction of surfactants with cationic procaine. Electrostatic interactions have a great role in the binding and consequently distribution of Procaine in micelle/water phases. These interactions for anionic surfactant (SDS) are higher than for cationic surfactant (CTAB). Gibbs free energy of binding and distribution of procaine between the bulk water and studied surfactant micelles were calculated.

Electron spin resonance spectroscopy (ESR) of the nitroxide labelled fatty acid probes (5-, 16-doxyl stearic acid) was used to monitor the micelle microviscosity of three surfactants at various concentrations in aqueous solution: sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS), dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). At low surfactant concentration, there is no micelle, the ESR probe is dissolved in water/surfactant homogeneous phase and gives his microviscosity. At higher surfactant concentration, an abrupt increase in microviscosity indicates the apparition of micelles and, the solubilization of the probes in micelles. The microviscosity of the three surfactants, in a large surfactant range, was obtained as well as the critical micelle concentration (CMC). The microviscosity increased slightly with the increase in surfactant concentration. Phosphate buffer lowered the CMC value and generally increased the microviscosity.  相似文献

The solubility of a water-insoluble dye, Sudan Red B, in aqueous sodium halide solutions of tetradecyl-, cetyl-, and stearyltrimethylammonium halides has been measured at different surfactant and salt concentrations, and the dependence of solubilization properties on alkyl chain length has been discussed with reference to the micelle size and shape. At low ionic strengths where only spherical micelles exist, the solubilization power of micellar surfactant slightly increases with increasing the ionic strength, but it sharply increases at high ionic strengths above the threshold value of sphere-rod transition. However, the solubilization power becomes independent of the ionic strength, if their rodlike micelles are sufficiently long. The solubilization capacity increases linearly with increasing the molecular weight, almost independent of counterion species, but the rod-like micelle has a higher solubilization capacity than the spherical micelle. The solubilization capacity is larger for a surfactant with longer alkyl chain, indicating that the dye is solubilized more readily in a larger hydrophobic core. The solubilized dye is situated in a rodlike micelle of alkyltrimethylammonium halides, on average, 4.5–7.5 nm apart from each other.  相似文献

The micellar properties of aqueous binary mixed solutions of sodium glycocholate, NaGC, and octa-oxyethylene glycol mono-n-decyl ether, C10E8, have been studied on the basis of surface tensions, the mean aggregation number and the polarity of the interior of the micelles. The mean aggregation number, measured by steady state quenching method, decreased with the increase of the mole fraction of NaGC in the mixed system. The polarity of the interior, estimated by the ratio of first and third vibronic peak in a monomeric pyrene fluorescence emission spectrum, suggested that the hydrophobicity of intramicelles increased with the increase of the mole fraction of NaGC in the mixed system. These are considered to be caused by the differences in the chemical structure and the hydrophobic nature between NaGC and C10E8. The mean aggregation number and the polarity of the interior for each micelle near the CMC in lower total concentration of surfactants showed the tendency approaching those of pure micelle of the nonionic surfactant. This suggests that the ratio of NaGC in the initial micelles in the range of lower total concentration near the CMC is lower than that of the corresponding prepared mole fraction in the mixed system. This lower value was confirmed also from theoretical calculation of the ratio of NaGC at the CMC in the mixed micelle by regular solution treatment of Rubingh in the solution.  相似文献

Mixtures of the cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) with the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) form more stable coatings in fused-silica capillaries than CTAB alone. The reversed electroosmotic flow (EOF) generated by CTAB/SDS mixtures remains stable for over 80 min after removal of the surfactants from the buffer. Enhanced stability (relative to CTAB alone) was found even when the ratio of SDS to CTAB was as low as 1%. This greater coating stability is attributed to the structural transition from adsorbed micelle to bilayer, which is induced by addition of SDS. Separation of a mixture of basic proteins yielded efficiencies of 364 000-562 000 plates/m and recoveries ranging from 85% to 98%. Migration time reproducibility was less than 0.9% relative standard deviation (RSD) from run to run and less than 2.6% RSD from day to day.  相似文献

The enthalpy of benzylalcohol (BzOH) solution has been determined as a function of alcohol concentration in aqueous trimethyltetradecylammonium bromide (TTAB) solutions in the presence of sodium sulfite or sodium sulfate up to high salt concentration. The electrolytes studied do not seem to induce TTAB sphere-torod transition at least up to 0.6 mol/kg of salt. Comparison with the enthalpic behavior of BzOH in sodium dodecylsulfate solutions and with that of 1-pentanol in both cationic and anionic micellar solutions suggests that the solubilization of BzOH in TTAB solutions is specifically favored by intramolecular interactions between alcohol molecules within the cationic micelles. The replacement of the bromide counterions by the sulfite or sulfate ions has been studied using potentiometry with an ionselective electrode in the case of trimethylhexadecylammonium bromide (CTAB). No difference could be detected between the effects of either divalent anions on the rate of change of the bromide ion-condensation with the salt/surfactant concentration ratioR. The degree of counter-ion condensation on micellar surface depends not only on theR values, but also on the total surfactant concentration.  相似文献

Deposition of polymer latices on a grafted Nylon 6 fiber was studied as a function of pH and the degree of grafting. The latices were polystyrene (PS), styrene/acrylamide copolymer (P(St/AAm)) and styrene/acrylic acid copolymer (P(St/AA)). The deposition of the latices on the grafted fiber decreased in every case with increasing pH and no deposition was observed at alkaline pH. The grafting of fiber with acrylic and methacrylic acid reduced the deposition of P(St/AAm) and P(St/AA) latices but had no influence on the deposition of PS latex. The relation between the deposition rates and the interaction energy at acidic pH indicates that the deposition of PS latex on the grafted fiber mainly depends on the electrostatic interaction. These results suggest that the expansion of water-soluble polyelectrolyte layer on the surface of grafted fiber plays an important role on the deposition.  相似文献

We report in this work new results of the study on the non-Newtonian viscosity of aqueous micellar solutions of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) in the presence of potassium bromide (KBr), in the concentration range where the elongated micelles overlap. The experiments have been performed as a function of the surfactant concentration, temperature and shear rate by use of a Couette-viscosimeter.In the non-Newtonian range, at relatively low surfactant concentration (0.25 M/l), our results show that the flow curves obtained at different temperatures converge to a single liner curve with a characteristic slope varying with the surfactant concentration. These same data can be superposed on a master curve when appropriate reduced variables are used. The shape of the flow curves obtained at different temperatures for a sufficiently high surfactant concentration is similar to that obtained for monodisperse polymer solutions at different molecular weights. The slope obtained of about –1 is also predicted by Graessley's model in the theory of microviscoelasticity based on the concept of entanglement for polymer solutions. However, at surfactant concentration higher than 0.25 M/l our results show an unusual behavior. Above some critical shear rate it is possible to obtain an increase of the apparent viscosity with temperature. One possible explanation of this effect can be found in the increase of the entanglement with concentration coupled with the temperature and direct now effects on scission and recombination rate of the micelles.  相似文献
