The complexation between narrow molecular weight distribution poly(2‐vinylpyridine) (P2VP) and polystyrene (suPS) or polyisoprene (suPI) end‐functionalized with one sulfonic acid group was examined in tetrahydrofuran dilute solutions by a combination of static and dynamic laser light scattering. Both apparent weight‐average molecular weight (Mw,app) and hydrodynamic radius (Rh) of the complexes exhibited a maximum at a certain molar ratio of suPS chains to P2VP monomeric units. This indicated that the P2VP backbone may be saturated by the grafted end‐functionalized chains because of repulsion between the grafted chains. By changing the molar mass of P2VP from 100,000 to 30,000 g/mol, the values of Mw,app and Rh decreased. When suPI was used instead of suPS, similar trends were observed. In the latter case, it was possible to prepare block copolymer‐like micelles by transferring the P2VP/suPI blend solutions in decane, which is a selective solvent for PI. The non‐covalent‐bonded polymeric micelle characteristics were investigated as a function of sulfonic acid/2‐vinylpyridine units ratio as well as temperature. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Ring-opening metathesis polymerization was used to generate an ABC triblock copolymer, containing complementary diamidopyridine (DAP) and thymine (THY) outer blocks, which assembles into spherical aggregates held together by DAP-THY noncovalent interactions. Addition of THY-containing small guest molecules results in complete opening and deaggregation of the block copolymer micelle. This molecular recognition and macroscopic response shows high selectivity to the guest structure, and tolerates only a small amount of conformational mobility in the THY guest. On the other hand, addition of a small DAP-containing guest does not break the aggregates, but instead, results in new micelles which show a different selectivity profile from the parent morphology. We have examined the effect of a number of structural features in the block copolymers, on both the extent and selectivity of their macroscopic response to guests (that is, opening of the micelle). This study has resulted in a set of structural guidelines, which help in the design of effective molecule-responsive micelles for applications in selective drug delivery, sensing, and surface patterning.  相似文献

Self-assembly vesicles have been made from a cyclodextrin (CD) supramolecular complex, which is cooperatively formed with natural beta-CD, 1-naphthylammonium chloride (NA), and sodium bis(2-ethyl-1-hexyl)sulfosuccinate (AOT) by weak noncovalent interactions. In the complex structure, a NA molecule is included inside a beta-CD molecule while it is coupled with an AOT molecule on one side. The supramolecular structure and morphology of the vesicles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS), respectively. The mechanism of vesicle formation and transition is discussed along with the data obtained from induced circular dichroism (ICD) and UV/visible spectroscopy, polarized optical microscopy (POM), and (1)H NMR spectroscopy. Both the fabrication and the transition of vesicles are controlled by the inclusion equilibria and the cooperative binding of noncovalent interactions, which include the "key-lock" principle, electrostatic interactions, pi-pi stacking, and amphiphilic hydrophobic association.  相似文献

Supramolecular nanoassemblies are gaining increasing importance as promising new materials with considerable potential for novel and promising applications. Within supramolecular nanoassemblies the connectivity of the monomeric units is based on reversible noncovalent interactions, like van der Waals interactions, hydrogen bonding, or ionic interactions. As the strength of these interactions depends on the molecular surrounding, the formation of nanoassemblies in principle can be controlled externally by changing the environment and/or the molecular shape of the underlying monomer. This way it is not only possible to switch the self-assembly on or off, but also to change between different aggregation states. In this minireview we present some recent selected approaches to supramolecular stimuli-responsive nanoassemblies.  相似文献

A supramolecular AB diblock copolymer has been prepared by the sequential self-assembly of terpyridine end-functionalized polymer blocks by using Ru(III)/Ru(II) chemistry. By this synthetic strategy a hydrophobic poly(ferrocenylsilane) (PFS) was attached to a hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) block to give an amphiphilic metallo-supramolecular diblock copolymer (PEO/PFS block ratio 6:1). This compound was used to form micelles in water that were characterized by a combination of dynamic and static light scattering, transmission electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. These complementary techniques showed that the copolymers investigated form rod-like micelles in water; the micelles have a constant diameter but are rather polydisperse in length, and light scattering measurements indicate that they are flexible. Crystallization of the PFS in these micelles was observed by differential scanning calorimetry, and is thought to be the key behind the formation of rod-like structures. The cylindrical micelles can be cleaved into smaller rods whenever the temperature of the solution is increased or they are exposed to ultrasound.  相似文献

The self‐assembly behavior of poly(isoprene‐b‐acrylic acid) and poly(styrene‐b‐2‐vinylpyridine) amphiphilic block copolymers, as well as a poly(styrene‐r‐2‐vinylpyridine) amphiphilic random copolymer was investigated in slightly selective organic solvents (tetrahydrofuran and toluene) in the presence of Ag and Au ions and subsequently Ag, Au metal nanoparticles, by means of dynamic light scattering. In the range of concentrations studied the copolymers exist in the form of micelles with cores composed of acrylic acid and 2‐vinylpyridine segments in equilibrium with unimers. The addition of metal ions and their subsequent transformation to metal nanoparticles shifts the equilibrium in favor of the micelles. The concentration of the inorganic components has also a considerable effect on the size of the polymeric aggregates. A similar behavior is observed for the random copolymer. Attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR‐FTIR), UV‐visible spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) give valuable additional information on the nature of the interactions between the polymeric and inorganic components, as well as on the characteristics of the metal nanoparticles and the hybrid micelles formed in each case. The presented results have a direct relation to the synthesis of metal nanoparticles under confinement by utilization of copolymer nanoreactors and appropriate solution conditions. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Size‐controlled and ordered assemblies of artificial nanotubes are promising for practical applications; however, the supramolecular assembly of such systems remains challenging. A novel strategy is proposed that can be used to reinforce intermolecular noncovalent interactions to construct hierarchical supramolecular structures with fixed sizes and long‐range ordering by introducing ionic terminals and fully rigid arms into benzene‐1,3,5‐tricarboxamide (BTA) molecules. A series of similar BTA molecules with distinct terminal groups and arm lengths are synthesized; all form hexagonal bundles of helical rosette nanotubes spontaneously in water. Despite differences in molecular packing, the dimensions and bundling of the supramolecular nanotubes show almost identical concentration dependence for all molecules. The similarities of the hierarchical assemblies, which tolerate certain molecular irregularities, can extend to properties such as the void ratio of the nanotubular wall. This is a rational strategy that can be used to achieve supramolecular nanotubes in aqueous environments with precise size and ordering at the same time as allowing molecular modifications for functionality.  相似文献

This study presents electrostatically self‐assembled nanoparticles from linear flexible polyelectrolytes (poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride or quarternized poly(4‐vinylpyridine)) and an ionic photo‐isomerizable azo dye (Acid Yellow 38) that can change their size upon UV‐light irradiation. Assemblies with narrow size distribution are stable in aqueous solution. For samples with under‐stoichiometric dye load, UV‐light exposure triggers a size decrease, e.g. from a hydrodynamic radius of Rh = 94 nm to Rh = 62 nm for an Ay38‐PDADMAC sample with a charge ratio of lcharge = 0.7. Size changes are caused by trans‐cis isomerization of the dye, accompanied by a change in hydrophilicity, binding enthalpy and entropy. Assemblies are characterized by static and dynamic light scattering, atomic force microscopy, UV–vis spectroscopy and isothermal titration calorimetry. Zeta potential measurements give insight into the electrostatic stabilization and size‐control of the ionic nano‐assemblies, revealing a master curve of effective surface charge density versus hydrodynamic radius. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We describe herein the hierarchical self‐assembly of discrete supramolecular metallacycles into ordered fibers or spherical particles through multiple noncovalent interactions. A new series of well‐defined metallacycles decorated with long alkyl chains were obtained through metal–ligand interactions, which were capable of aggregating into ordered fibroid or spherical nanostructures on the surface, mostly driven by hydrophobic interactions. In‐depth studies indicated that the morphology diversity was originated from the structural information encoded in the metallacycles, including the number of alkyl chains and their spatial orientation. Interestingly, the morphology of the metallacycle aggregates could be tuned by changing the solvent polarity. These findings are of special significance since they provide a simple yet highly controllable approach to prepare ordered and tunable nanostructures from small building blocks by means of hierarchical self‐assembly.  相似文献

A supramolecular block copolymer is prepared by the molecular recognition of nucleobases between poly(2‐(2‐methoxyethoxy)ethyl methacrylate‐co‐oligo(ethylene glycol) methacrylate)‐SS‐poly(ε‐caprolactone)‐adenine (P(MEO2MA‐co‐OEGMA)‐SS‐PCL‐A) and uracil‐terminated poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG‐U). Because the block copolymer is linked by the combination of covalent (disulfide bond) and noncovalent (A U) bonds, it not only has similar properties to conventional covalently linked block copolymers but also possesses a dynamic and tunable nature. The copolymer can self‐assemble into micelles with a PCL core and P(MEO2MA‐co‐OEGMA)/PEG shell. The size and morphologies of the micelles/aggregates can be adjusted by altering the temperature, pH, salt concentration, or adding dithiothreitol (DTT) to the solution. The controlled release of Nile red is achieved at different environmental conditions.
