Epoxy‐functionalized polystyrene/silica core–shell composite nanoparticles were prepared by the postaddition of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) via emulsion polymerization. The outermost shell of obtained multilayered core–shell particles was made up of poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA). A semicontinuous process involving the dropwise addition of GMA was used to avoid demulsification of the emulsion system. The amount of grafted PGMA was quantified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and was altered in a wide range (1–50 wt % to styrene). The binding efficiency was usually high (ca. 90%), indicating strong adhesion between the silica core and the polymer shell. There were approximately four or five original silica beads, which formed a cluster, per composite of nanoparticles whose size was about 60–70 nm. Other main factors of polymerization conditions including the amounts of sodium dodecyl sulfonate and silica are also discussed. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polymeric particles with hydrophobic PCL hairy chains were prepared by ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) from hydrophilic core particles, which were prepared by soap‐free emulsion polymerization of styrene, 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate, and divinylbenzene. Due to the incorporation of 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate in the core particles, hydroxyl groups on the surface of core particles could be obtained, and in the following ROP of ε‐caprolactone, the hydroxyl groups on the surface of the particles could effectively initiate the polymerization. Various reaction conditions were evaluated to produce hairy particles with optimal grafting efficiency. The presence of hydrophobic polymeric hairs on the surface of particles led to a dramatic improvement in their dispersibility in oil phase. By controlling the grafting amount of PCL on the surface of hydrophilic core particles, the surface properties of the hairy particles could be well tailored, represented the change of water contact angles from 75.0° to 114.6°. The prepared hairy particles were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and Fourier transform infrared analysis. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Glycidyl‐functional polymer nanoparticles [poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA)] were fabricated with microemulsion polymerization. The successful fabrication of PGMA nanoparticles was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). A TEM image showed that the average diameter of the PGMA nanoparticles was approximately 10–28 nm and was fairly monodisperse. As the surfactant concentration increased, the average size of the nanoparticles decreased and approached an asymptotic value. A significant reduction of the nanoparticle size to the nanometer scale led to an enhanced number of surface functionalities, which played an important role in the curing reaction. The PGMA nanoparticles were cured with a low‐temperature curing agent, diethylene triamine, to produce ultrafine thermoset nanoparticles. The low‐temperature curing process was performed below the glass‐transition temperature of PGMA to prevent the coagulation and deformation of the nanoparticles. A TEM image indicated that the cured PGMA nanoparticles did not exhibit interparticle aggregation and morphological transformation during curing. The average size of the cured PGMA nanoparticles was consistent with that of the pristine PGMA nanoparticles © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Fine magnetite nanoparticles, both electrostatically stabilized and nonstabilized, were synthesized in situ by precipitation of Fe(II) and Fe(III) salts in alkaline medium. Magnetic poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) microspheres with core‐shell structure, where Fe3O4 is the magnetic core and PGMA is the shell, were obtained by dispersion polymerization initiated with 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN), 4,4′‐azobis(4‐cyanovaleric acid) (ACVA), or ammonium persulfate (APS) in ethanol containing poly(vinylpyrrolidone) or ethylcellulose stabilizer in the presence of iron oxide ferrofluid. The average microsphere size ranged from 100 nm to 2 μm. The effects of the nature of ferrofluid, polymerization temperature, monomer, initiator, and stabilizer concentration on the PGMA particle size and polydispersity were studied. The particles contained 2–24 wt % of iron. AIBN produced larger microspheres than APS or ACVA. Polymers encapsulating electrostatically stabilized iron oxide particles contained lower amounts of oxirane groups compared with those obtained with untreated ferrofluid. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Core‐shell structured barium titanate‐poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (BaTiO3‐PGMA) nanocomposites were prepared by surface‐initiated atom transfer radical polymerization of GMA from the surface of BaTiO3 nanoparticles. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed the grafting of the PGMA shell on the surface of the BaTiO3 nanoparticles cores. Transmission Electron Microscopy results revealed that BaTiO3 nanoparticles are covered by thin brushes (~20 nm) of PGMA forming a core‐shell structure and thermogravimetric analysis results showed that the grafted BaTiO3‐PGMA nanoparticles consist of ~13.7% PGMA by weight. Upon incorporating these grafted nanoparticles into 20 μm‐thick films, the resultant BaTiO3‐PGMA nanocomposites have shown an improved dielectric constant (ε = 54), a high breakdown field strength (~3 MV/cm) and high‐energy storage density ~21.51 J/cm3. AC conductivity measurements were in good agreement with Jonscher's universal power law and low leakage current behavior was observed before the electrical breakdown field of the films. Improved dielectric and electrical properties of core‐shell structured BaTiO3‐PGMA nanocomposite were attributed to good nanoparticle dispersion and enhanced interfacial polarization. Furthermore, only the surface grafted BaTiO3 yielded homogenous films that were mechanically stable. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2015 , 53, 719–728  相似文献

Amphiphilic block copolymers composed of a hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) block and a hydrophobic poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) block were synthesized through cationic ring‐opening polymerization with PEG as the precursor. The model reactions indicated that the reactivity of the epoxy groups was higher than that of the double bonds in the bifunctional monomer glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) under the cationic polymerization conditions. Through the control of the reaction time in the synthesis of block copolymer PEG‐b‐PGMA, a linear GMA block was obtained through the ring‐opening polymerization of epoxy groups, whereas the double bond in GMA remained unreacted. The results showed that the molecular weight of the PEG precursor had little influence on the grafting of GMA, and the PGMA blocks almost kept the same length, despite the difference of the PEG blocks. In addition, the PGMA blocks only consisted of several GMA units. The obtained amphiphilic PEG‐b‐PGMA block copolymers could form polymeric core–shell micelles by direct molecular self‐assembly in water. The crosslinking of the PGMA core of the PEG‐b‐PGMA micelles, induced by ultraviolet radiation and heat instead of crosslinking agents, greatly increased the stability of the micelles. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A magnetic poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) composite latex was prepared by soapless emulsion polymerization in the presence of ferrofluid, and the ferrofluid was prepared by means of a coprecipitation method. The effects of various polymerization parameters, such as the monomer concentration, ferrofluid content, and initiator concentration, on the conversion curve and particle size of the magnetic composite latex particles were examined in detail. The results showed that two nucleation mechanisms were involved according to the polymerization conditions. In the monomer‐rich and less ferrofluid system, self‐nucleation of PMMA was dominant over the entire course of emulsion polymerization. In the ferrofluid‐rich system, seeded emulsion polymerization was the main course to form the magnetic composite latex particles. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel biotinylated and enzyme‐immobilized nanobio device was prepared with heterobifunctional composite latex particles. Hemispherical poly(glycidyl methacrylate‐co‐divinylbenzene)/polystyrene [P(GMA‐DVB)/PSt] particles with epoxy and hydroxyl groups were prepared by soap‐free seeded emulsion polymerization with P(GMA‐DVB) seed particles. Hydroxyl groups were introduced to PSt chain terminals in the seeded stage by adding 2‐mercaptoethanol as a chain‐transfer agent. To obtain the desired hemispherical structure particles, we studied the effects of the preswelling process, the type and amount of solvents added in the seeded polymerization step, the weight ratio of the secondary monomer (styrene) to the seed particle (M/P), and the type of initiators. Under suitable conditions, heterobifunctional P(GMA‐DVB)/PSt was obtained, which was confirmed by observing the binding of streptavidin–colloidal gold with transmission electron microscopy (TEM). To obtain biotinylated and enzyme‐immobilized particles, 5‐(N‐succinimidyloxycarbonyl)pentyl D‐biotinamide was first reacted with the hydroxyl group on the PSt domain of the particle. Pyruvate kinase (PK) was then directly immobilized to the biotinylated particles through a reaction with the epoxy group in the PGMA domain. The monolayer of PK on the latex particle surface was considered to be formed by covalent binding. The activity of immobilized PK was almost conserved, even after being stored at 4 °C for 48 days. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 43: 562–574, 2005  相似文献

Polymerization‐induced self‐assembly (PISA) has become the preferred method of preparing self‐assembled nano‐objects based on amphiphilic block copolymers. The PISA methodology has also been extended to the realization of colloidal nanocomposites, such as polymer–silica hybrid particles. In this work, we compare two methods to prepare nanoparticles based on self‐assembly of block copolymers bearing a core‐forming block with a reactive alkoxysilane moiety (3‐(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate, MPS), namely (i) RAFT emulsion polymerization using a hydrophilic macroRAFT agent and (ii) solution‐phase self‐assembly upon slow addition of a selective solvent. Emulsion polymerization under both ab initio and seeded conditions were studied, as well the use of different initiating systems. Effective and reproducible chain extension (and hence PISA) of MPS via thermally initiated RAFT emulsion polymerization was compromised due to the hydrolysis and polycondensation of MPS occurring under the reaction conditions employed. A more successful approach to block copolymer self‐assembly was achieved via polymerization in a good solvent for both blocks (1,4‐dioxane) followed by the slow addition of water, yielding spherical nanoparticles that increased in size as the length of the solvophobic block was increased. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Micron‐sized monodisperse superparamagnetic polyglycidyl methacrylate (PGMA) particles with functional amino groups were prepared by a process involving: (1) preparation of parent monodisperse PGMA particles by the dispersion polymerization method, (2) chemical modification of the PGMA particles with ethylenediamine (EDA) to yield amino groups, and (3) impregnation of iron ions (Fe2+ and Fe3+) inside the particles and subsequently precipitating them with ammonium hydroxide to form magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles within the polymer particles. The resultant magnetic PGMA particles with amino groups were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X‐ray diffractometry (XRD), and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM). SEM showed that the magnetic particles had an average size of 2.6 μm and were highly monodisperse. TEM demonstrated that the magnetite nanoparticles distributed evenly within the polymer particles. The existence of amino groups in the magnetic polymer particles was confirmed by FTIR. XRD indicated that the magnetic nanoparticles within the polymer were pure Fe3O4 with a spinel structure. VSM results showed that the magnetic polymer particles were superparamagnetic, and saturation magnetization was found to be 16.3 emu/g. The Fe3O4 content of the magnetic particles was 24.3% based on total weight. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 43: 3433–3439, 2005  相似文献

The atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) technique using the copper halide/ N,N′,N′,N″,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine complex was applied to the graft polymerization of methyl methacrylate and methyl acrylate on the uniform polystyrene (PS) seed particles and formed novel core‐shell particles. The core was submicron crosslinked PS particles that were prepared via emulsifier‐free emulsion polymerization. The crosslinked PS particles obtained were transferred into the organic phase (tetrahydrofuran), and surface modification using the chloromethylation method was performed. Then, the modified seed PS particles were used to initiate ATRP to prepare a controlled poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and poly(methyl acrylate) (PMA) shell. The final core‐shell particles were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and elementary analysis. The grafting polymerization was conducted successfully on the surface of modified crosslinked PS particles, and the shell thickness and weight ratio (PMMA and PMA) of the particles were calculated. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Maghemite (γ‐Fe2O3) colloid has been synthesized by coprecipitation of ferrous and ferric salts in alkaline medium and oxidation. The obtained nanoparticles were complexed with a phosphate macromonomer—penta(propylene glycol) methacrylate phosphate (PPGMAP). Complexes with the weight ratio PPGMAP/γ‐Fe2O3 0.01–10 were investigated using a range of characterization methods. The amount of PPGMAP attached to the particles was about 22 wt %. The size and size distribution of the γ‐Fe2O3 core particles in the dry state was measured by TEM. To complete the TEM images, the hydrodynamic size of the nanoparticles including polymer shell and the maghemite core was determined by DLS measurements in toluene. Magnetic poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) nanospheres were obtained by Kraton G 1650‐stabilized and 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile‐initiated polymerization of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) in toluene or toluene/cyclohexane mixture in the presence of PPGMAP‐coated γ‐Fe2O3 colloid. The effect of Kraton G 1650 concentration on the morphology, PGMA nanosphere size and polydispersity was investigated. The particles were characterized also by both thermogravimetric analysis and magnetic measurements. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 47: 4982–4994, 2009  相似文献

Clay/poly(glycidyl methacrylate) nanocomposites (clay/PGMA) were prepared by in situ radical photopolymerization using N,N‐dimethylaminopropyltrimethoxysilane(DMA)‐modified bentonite clay acting as hydrogen donor for benzophenone in solution. This initiating system permits to photopolymerize glycidyl methacrylate between the lamellae of the DMA‐modified clay. The approach provides exfoliated nanocomposites as judged by the measurements of X‐ray diffraction. However, a low fraction of persistent intercalated clay regions was visible by transmission electron microscopy. X‐ray photoelectron spectra analyses indicate that the nanocomposites have PGMA‐rich surface. The clay/PGMA nanocomposites can be readily dispersed in ethanol. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. We describe the synthesis and properties of functional microgel particles based on poly(N-vinylcaprolactam-co-glycidyl methacrylate) (PVCL/PGMA) copolymer. A series of colloidally stable microgel particles with a range of glycidyl methacrylate content were prepared by surfactant-free heterophase polymerization in water. The microgel particles obtained had hydrodynamic radii between 250 and 350 nm and were fairly monodisperse in size; however, a broadening of the particle size distribution was observed for samples with a low GMA content. The PVCL/PGMA microgel particles exhibit thermally responsive reversible changes in diameter in water, and the swelling degree increased with the PVCL fraction in the copolymer structure. These microgels were then modified with photoluminescent europium-doped lanthanum fluoride nanoparticles (LaF3:Eu-AEP) through reaction of the 2-aminoethyl phosphate surface ligands with epoxy groups present in the microgel. These hybrid microgels were colloidally stable and thermally responsive in aqueous solution.  相似文献

2‐Methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC), a biomimetic monomer, was grafted from silicon wafer surfaces at room temperature by combining self‐assembly of initiator and surface‐initiated atom transfer radical polymerization. Two methods were used to control the grafting process. One was to add free initiator to the reaction system; the other was to add excess deactivator. The grafting densities up to 0.3 chains/nm2 were obtained. The surface thickness increased linearly with MPC conversion. The thickness depended on catalyst and monomer concentrations, as well as activator/deactivator ratio. Poly(MPC) layers of >100 nm thick were obtained by optimizing the polymerization conditions. A second block of either poly(MPC) or poly[2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate] was also grown from the grafted poly(MPC), demonstrating the system livingness. X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to examine the surface chemical compositions showed good agreement with the theoretical values. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly[2‐(dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate] (PDMAEMA) brushes on the surfaces of clay layers were prepared by in situ free‐radical polymerization. Poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) colloid particles stabilized and initiated by clay layers with PDMAEMA polymer brushes were prepared by Pickering emulsion polymerization. Transmission electron microscopy was used to characterize the structure and morphology of the colloid particles. The X‐ray diffraction (XRD) results indicated that the intercalated structures of the clay layers were almost destroyed in Pickering emulsion polymerization, and clay layers with exfoliated structures were created. The surface of the colloid particles was analyzed by using X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The XPS results provide direct evidence that the clay layers with PDMAEMA chains cover the PMMA colloid particles. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Rigid and monodisperse spherical polymer particles with 2.36 ± 0.18 μm diameter containing residual surface vinyl groups were prepared by photoinitiated precipitation polymerization of divinylbenzene. Anti‐Markovnikov addition of HBr to the surface vinyl groups yielded a 2‐bromoethyl functionality that was used as macroinitiator for atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), providing the possibility for further functionalization by controlled “grafting from” processes. This was demonstrated by grafting of glycidyl methacrylate brushes from the particle surface, using an ATRP system based on CuBr and pentamethyl diethylenetriamine. Existence of a methacrylic overlayer was verified by FTIR and XPS measurements, and the grafted particles were easily dispersed in water, confirming conversion of the particle surface from hydrophobic to hydrophilic. Hydrobromination of residual vinyl groups yields a macroinitiator that can be used for grafting of glycidyl methacrylate by ATRP. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel visible light‐induced living surface grafting polymerization was developed by a strategy in which isopropyl thioxanthone (ITX) was first photoreduced under UV light and sequentially coupled onto the surface of polymeric substrates, and the produced isopropyl thioxanthone‐semipinacol (ITXSP) “dormant” groups were subsequently reactivated under visible light to initiate a surface grafting polymerization. By using glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and low‐density polyethylene (LDPE) films as models, a “living” surface grafting polymerization initiated by ITXSP under visible light at room temperature was observed. Both the surface grafting chain length versus grafting conversion of monomer and the grafting polymerization rate versus monomer concentration demonstrated a linear dependence, which is in accord with the known characteristics of living polymerization. The livingness rendered it possible to accurately control the thickness of the grafted layer by simply altering the irradiation time. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Silica nanoparticles (NSiO2) are modified with mixed polymer brushes derived from a block copolymer precursor, poly(methyl methacrylate)-b-poly(glycidyl methacrylate)-b-poly(tert-butyl methacrylate) with short middle segment of PGMA, through one step ??grafting-onto?? approach. The block polymer precursors are prepared via reversible addition?Cfragmentation chain transfer-based polymerization of methyl methacrylate, glycidyl methacrylate, and tert-butyl methacrylate. The grafting is achieved by the reaction of epoxy group in short PGMA segment with silanol functionality of silica. After hydrolysis of poly(tert-butyl methacrylate) segment, amphiphilic NSiO2 with ??V-shaped?? polymer brushes possessing exact 1:1 molar ratio of different arms were prepared. The functionalized particles self-assemble at oil/water interfaces to form stable large droplets with average diameter ranging from 0.15?±?0.06 to 2.6?±?0.75?mm. The amphiphilicity of the particles can be finely tuned by changing the relative lengths of poly(methyl methacrylate) and poly(methacrylic acid) segments, resulting in different assembly behavior. The method may serve as a general way to control the surface property of the particles.  相似文献
