The thermophysical and mechanical properties of a nanocomposite material composed of amine‐cured diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) reinforced with organomontmorillonite clay are reported. The storage modulus at 100 °C, which was above the glass‐transition temperature (Tg), increased approximately 350% with the addition of 10 wt % (6.0 vol %) of clay. Below the Tg, the storage modulus at 30 °C increased 50% relative to the value of unfilled epoxy. It was determined that the Tg linearly increased as a function of clay volume percent. The tensile modulus of epoxy at room temperature increased approximately 50% with the addition of 10 wt % of clay. The reinforcing effect of the organoclay nanoplatelets is discussed with respect to the Tandon–Weng and Halpin–Tsai models. A pseudoinclusion model is proposed to describe the behavior of randomly oriented, uniformly dispersed platelets in nanocomposite materials. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polylactide (PLA)‐layered silicate nanocomposites plasticized with 20 wt % of poly(ethylene glycol) 1000 were prepared by melt blending. Three kinds of organo‐modified montmorillonites—Cloisite® 20A, Cloisite® 25A, and Cloisite® 30B—were used as fillers at a concentration level varying from 1–10 wt %. Neat PLA and plasticized PLA with the same thermomechanical history were considered for comparison. Nanocomposites based on amorphous PLA were obtained via melt‐quenching. The influence of both plasticization and nanoparticle filling on the physicochemical properties of the nanocomposites were investigated. Characterization of the systems was achieved by size exclusion chromatography (SEC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), thermally modulated differential scanning calorimetry (TMDSC), X‐ray diffraction (XRD), and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMTA). SEC revealed a decrease of the molecular weight of the PLA matrix with the filler content. Thermal behavior on heating showed one cold crystallization process in the reference neat PLA sample, while two cold crystallization processes in plasticized PLA and plasticized nanocomposites. The thermal windows of these processes tend to increase with the filler content. The crystalline form of PLA developed upon heating was affected neither by the plasticization nor by the type and content of Cloisite used. It was found that the series of organo‐modified montmorillonites with decreasing affinity to PLA is Cloisite® 30B, Cloisite® 20A, and Cloisite® 25A, respectively. The dynamic mechanical properties were sensitive to the sample composition. Generally, the storage modulus increased with the filler content. Glassy PEG, well dispersed within unfilled PLA matrix, exhibited also a reinforcing effect, since the storage modulus of this sample was higher than for unplasticized reference at temperature region below the glass transition of PEG. Moreover, loss modulus of all plasticized samples revealed an additional maximum ascribed to the glass transition of PEG–rich dispersed phase, indicating partial miscibility of organic components of the systems investigated. The magnitude of this mechanical loss was correlated with the filler content, and to some extent, also with the nanofiller ability to be intercalated by polymer components. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Clay organifier with propylene oxide‐capped polyethylene glycol (PEG) with amine end group (jeffamines ED600–2003) was synthesized through an ion exchange process between sodium cations in montmorillonite (MMT) and ? NH groups in ED600–2003. The d‐spacing of organoclay was found to be 1.697–1.734 nm compared to 0.96 nm of pristine MMT. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to determine the molecular dispersion of the clay within ED600. Polyurethane‐urea/montmorillonite (PUU‐MMT) nanocomposites were prepared via in situ polymerization from polyethylene glycol (PEG 400) or 1,4 butane diol (1,4 BD), toluene diisocyanate (TDI), jeffamines ED600–2003, and 1–12 wt% of organoclay. Intercalation of PUU into modified clays was confirmed by X‐ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy, and TEM. The barrier properties were significantly reduced; however, the thermal stability was increased in the nanocomposites as compared to the pristine polymer. Nanocomposites exhibited optical clarity and solvent resistance. The mechanical properties and the glass transition temperature of PUU were improved with the addition of organoclay. The incorporation of silicate layers gave rise to a considerable increase in the storage modulus (stiffness), demonstrating the reinforcing effect of clay on the PUU matrix. Novel epoxy‐clay nanocomposites have been prepared by epoxy and organoclays. Polyoxypropylene triamine (Jeffamine T‐403), primary polyethertriamine (Jeffamine T‐5000) and three types of polyoxypropylene diamine (Jeffamine D‐230, D‐400, D‐2000) with different molecular weight were used to treat Na‐montmorillonite (MMT) to form organoclays. The preparation involves the ion exchange of Na+ in MMT with the organic ammonium group in Jeffamine compounds. X‐ray diffraction (XRD) confirms the intercalation of these organic moieties to form Jeffamine‐MMT intercalates. Jeffamine D‐230 was used as a swelling agent for the organoclay and curing agent. It was established that the d001 spacing of MMT in epoxy‐clay nanocomposites depends on the silicate modification. Although XRD data did not show any apparent order of the clay layers in the T5000‐MMT/epoxy nanocomposite, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed the presence of multiplets with an average size of 5 nm and the average spacing between multiplets falls in the range of 100 Å. The multiplets clustered into mineral rich domains with an average size of 140 nm. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) reveals the absence of mineral aggregate. Nanocomposites exhibit significant increase in thermal stability in comparison to the original epoxy. The effect of the organoclay on the hardness and toughness properties of crosslinked polymer matrix was studied. The hardness of all the resulting materials was enhanced with the inclusion of organoclay. A three‐fold increase in the energy required for breaking the test specimen was found for T5000‐MMT/epoxy containing 7 wt% of organoclay as compared to that of pure epoxy. An 2‐ureido‐4[1H]pyrimidinone (UPy) motif with self‐association capability (through quadruple hydrogen bonds) was successfully anchored onto montmorillonite clay layers. Polymer/clay nanocomposites were prepared by specific hydrogen bonding interactions between surface functionalized silica nanoclays and UPy‐bonded supramolecular poly(ethylene glycol) or poly(?‐caprolactone). The mixed morphologies including intercalated layers with a non‐uniform separation and exfoliated single layers isolated from any stack were determined by combined X‐ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopic measurements. Thermal analyses showed that all nanocomposites had higher decomposition temperatures and thermal stabilities compared with neat polymer. The differential scanning calorimetric data implied that the crystallinity of polymers did not show essential changes upon introduction of organomodified UPy clays. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Montmorillonite (MMT) was modified with the acidified cocamidopropyl betaine (CAB) and the resulting organo‐montmorillonite (O‐MMT) was dispersed in an epoxy/methyl tetrahydrophthalic anhydride system to form epoxy nanocomposites. The intercalation and exfoliation behavior of the epoxy nanocomposites were examined by X‐ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The curing behavior and thermal property were investigated by in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and DSC, respectively. The results showed that MMT could be highly intercalated by acidified CAB, and O‐MMT could be easily dispersed in epoxy resin to form intercalated/exfoliated epoxy nanocomposites. When the O‐MMT loading was lower than 8 phr (relative to 100 phr resin), exfoliated nanocomposites were achieved. The glass‐transition temperatures (Tg's) of the exfoliated nanocomposite were 20 °C higher than that of the neat resin. At higher O‐MMT loading, partial exfoliation was achieved, and those samples possessed moderately higher Tg's as compared with the neat resin. O‐MMT showed an obviously catalytic nature toward the curing of epoxy resin. The curing rate of the epoxy compound increased with O‐MMT loading. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The properties of polypropylene composites can be tailored through the use of nanoclay fillers. The effectiveness of a metallocene‐catalyzed hydroxyl‐functional polypropylene in the compatibilization of polypropylene layered nanosilicate composites was studied, and the results were compared with those for a commercial maleic anhydride functionalized polypropylene. Polypropylene/organoclay nanocomposites were prepared by melt blending, and two polypropylene/compatibilizer/organoclay ratios, 90/5/5 and 70/20/10, were characterized. The organomodification of the clay was carried out with octadecylamine and N‐methylundecenylamine. The structure of the layered silicate was studied by transmission electron microscopy, wide‐angle X‐ray scattering, and small‐angle X‐ray scattering. The fracture surfaces of the composites and thus the efficiency of the compatibilizers to penetrate the galleries of the organoclays were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, and the melt viscosity was studied by stress‐controlled rotational rheometry. The nanostructure was observed with both alkyl amines used for intercalation. The fillers facilitated the processability of all the composites, consisting of equal amounts of compatibilizer and organoclay filler and, in some of the composites, containing twice as much compatibilizer as organoclay filler. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A vermiculite (VMT) dispersion in water was blended with aqueous poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). The properties of the PVA–VMT nanocomposites greatly depended on the preparation procedure because of the chemical reactions and physical interactions involved. The samples were prepared in two steps to investigate the properties of the PVA–VMT nanocomposites. The VMT was first pretreated and delaminated with hydrochloric acid. The delaminated VMT was then added to the PVA solution with various mixing times. The structure and properties of the films were investigated. From X‐ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy, the VMT layers were found to be well dispersed individually in the PVA–VMT blends. The effect of the VMT content on the thermal behavior of the PVA–VMT blends was also studied with differential scanning calorimetry. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Exfoliated polyamide‐6 (PA6)/organoclay nanocomposite films with planar‐oriented clay platelets were prepared by the simple hot pressing of melt‐extruded nanocomposite pellets. The average distance between the neighboring clay platelets was controlled by changes in the clay loading content in the nanocomposites. The effects of the clay platelet spacing on the crystallization behavior of PA6 were investigated with transmission electron microscopy and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction. The crystal lamellae were found to be mainly perpendicular to the clay surface for the nanocomposites with large spacing between the clay sheets at low clay loading contents. This perpendicular orientation morphology was attributed to the strong interactions between the PA6 molecular chain and the clay surface. In contrast, the crystal lamellae were found to be parallel to the clay surface when the spacing between the neighboring clay platelets was less than 30 nm. It was concluded that the confinement crystallization of PA6 within the nanoscale channels formed by clay sheets resulted in this parallel orientation texture. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. EVOH nanocomposites containing organically treated clays are unique systems in which the clay is strongly attracted to EVOH, thus affecting the morphology and the resultant thermal and mechanical properties. A strong effect of the processing conditions on morphology, thermal, and mechanical properties was observed. In highly interacting systems, under dynamic mixing conditions, in addition to a fracturing process of the clay particles, an onion‐like delamination process is suggested. EVA‐g‐MA and LLDPE‐g‐MA, having polar groups, were studied as compatibilizers to further induce clay intercalation and exfoliation. The compatibilizers affected both the thermal and mechanical properties of the composites at different levels. Thermal analysis showed that with increasing compatibilizer content lower crystallinity levels result, until at a certain content no crystallization has taken place. A Ny‐6 (nylon‐6)/EVOH blend is an interesting host matrix for incorporation of low organoclay contents. The Ny‐6/EVOH blend is a unique system that tends to hydrogen bond and also to in situ chemically react during melt mixing. The addition of clay seems to interrupt the chemical reaction between the two host polymers at certain compositions, leading to lower melt blending torque levels when clay is present. A competition between Ny‐6 and EVOH regarding the intercalation process takes place. However, Ny‐6 seems to lead to exfoliated structures, whereas EVOH forms intercalated structures, as revealed from combined XRD and TEM experiments, owing to thermodynamic considerations and preferential localization of the clay in Ny‐6. Of special interest is the increased storage modulus seen by the presence of only 1 wt % clay, which was achieved by extrusion under high shear forces, leading to a completely exfoliated structure. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Nylon‐66 nanocomposites were prepared by melt‐compounding nylon‐66 with organically modified montmorillonite (MMT). The organic MMT layers were exfoliated in a nylon‐66 matrix as confirmed by wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD) and transmission electron microscopy. The presence of MMT layers increased the crystallization temperature of nylon‐66 because of the heterogeneous nucleation of MMT. Multiple melting behavior was observed in the nylon‐66/MMT nanocomposites, and the MMT layers induced the formation of form II spherulites of nylon‐66. The crystallite sizes L100 and L010 of nylon‐66, determined by WAXD, decreased with an increasing MMT content. High‐temperature WAXD was performed to determine the Brill transition in the nylon‐66/MMT nanocomposites. Polarized optical microscopy demonstrated that the dimension of nylon‐66 spherulites decreased because of the effect of the MMT layers. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effect of organo‐modified clay (Cloisite 93A) on the crystal structure and isothermal crystallization behavior of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) in iPP/clay nanocomposites prepared by latex technology was investigated by wide angle X‐ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry and polarized optical microscopy. The X‐ray diffraction results indicated that the higher clay loading promotes the formation of the β‐phase crystallites, as evidenced by the appearance of a new peak corresponding to the (300) reflection of β‐iPP. Analysis of the isothermal crystallization showed that the PP nanocomposite (1% C93A) exhibited higher crystallization rates than the neat PP. The unfilled iPP matrix and nanocomposites clearly shows double melting behavior; the shape of the melting transition progressively changes toward single melting with increasing crystallization temperature. The fold surface free energy (σe) of polymer chains in the nanocomposites was lower than that in the PP latex (PPL). It should be reasonable to treat C93A as a good nucleating agent for the crystallization of PPL, which plays a determinant effect on the reduction in σe during the isothermal crystallization of the nanocomposites. The activation energy, ΔEa, decreased with the incorporation of clay nanoparticles into the matrix, which in turn indicates that the nucleation process is facilitated by the presence of clay. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(styrene‐co‐butyl acrylate) copolymers were prepared by free‐radical random copolymerization of styrene and butyl acrylate in emulsion in the presence of 10% of surface‐modified sodium montmorillonite (Na‐MMT). The objective of this work was to evaluate the impact of the clay organic modifier in terms of its chemical structure, its degree of interaction within the clay galleries surface, and its ability to copolymerize with monomers, on the morphology and properties of the final nanocomposite prepared. Na‐MMT was modified using different organic modifiers, namely: sodium 1‐allyloxy‐2‐hydroxypropyl (Cops), 2‐acrylamido‐2‐methyl‐1‐propanesulfonic acid (AMPS), N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPA), and sodium 11‐methacryloyloxy‐undecan‐1‐yl sulfate (MET), respectively. The morphology and properties of the nanocomposites obtained were found to be dependant on the clay organic modifier. X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy indicated that, nanocomposites at 10% clay loading with Cops‐, NIPA‐, and MET‐modified clays, yielded intercalated to partially exfoliated structures, whereas AMPS‐modified clay gave a nanocomposite with a fully exfoliated structure. All polymer–clay nanocomposites were found to be more thermally stable than neat poly(S‐co‐BA) as were determined by TGA. However, nanocomposites with intercalated structures exhibited greater thermal stability relative to fully exfoliated ones. Furthermore, nanocomposites with exfoliated structures exhibited higher storage moduli (GI) than partially exfoliated once, whereas intercalated structure showed the lowest GI values. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel fluorinated coating containing well‐dispersed silicate nanolayers is successfully produced via in‐situ free radical polymerization of 2,2,2‐trifluoroethyl methacrylate in the presence of vinylbenzyl‐functionalized montmorillonite with different loading. The organic modification of sodium montmorillonite is achieved through an ion exchange reaction with triphenylvinylbenzylphosphonium chloride as surfactant prepared before use by reaction with vinylbenyl chloride and phosphine. The following in‐situ polymerization in the presence of organomodified clay leads to fluorinated nanocomposites with of partially exfoliated and intercalated morphologies, as determined via XRD and TEM analysis. The nanoscale dispersion of clay layers is also evidenced by thermal analysis; a moderate decrease of the glass transition temperature about 2–8 °C compared to their virgin PMATRIF and an improvement of their thermal stability as evidenced by TGA. The wettability of the nanocomposite films is also studied by contact angle measurements with water. The incorporation of organomodified clays not only increases the hydrophobicity of the fluorinated polymers but also improves the surface properties of obtained nanocomposites. Compared the virgin homopolymer, the mechanical properties of the nanocomposites are reduced by addition of organomodifed clay at temperature from 30 to 60 °C, whereas this trend is gradually decreased at higher temperature. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Frontal polymerization, a method that allows to convert a monomer into a polymer exploiting the exothermicity of the self-same polymerization reaction, has been conveniently used for the easy and fast preparation of epoxy resin-montmorillonite nanocomposites. The obtained materials have shown characteristics similar or even better than those prepared by the conventional polymerization routes. Organoclay nanocomposites were prepared by ultrasound‐assisted solution intercalation technique based on polystyrene containing brominated epoxy and a combination of brominated epoxy and antimony oxide. Aspects of nanomorphology and nanodispersion were investigated by X‐ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy whereas flammability and reaction to fire were evaluated using limiting oxygen index, UL‐94, and mass loss calorimeter tests. Polystyrene/brominated‐epoxy‐blend‐based nanocomposites showed mixed intercalated–exfoliated nanomorphology where polymer‐intercalated crystallites predominantly exist in polystyrene matrix and exfoliated silicate layers reside on polystyrene/brominated epoxy phase boundaries and within brominated epoxy domains. Organoclay was found to impart a compatibilization effect on polystyrene and dispersed brominated epoxy, which facilitates uniform distribution of a fine flame‐retarding phase within the matrix. With the reduction of the rate at which decomposition products evolve into the gas phase, organoclay nanocomposites showed notable reductions in peak heat release rate and increases in limiting oxygen index. The gas‐phase hot radical entrapment by halogenated flame‐retardant system was coupled with the condensed‐phase physical action of nanodispersed organoclay, which increased the overall fire‐retardant effectiveness. Fire‐retardant mechanisms of nanocomposites based on polystyrene/brominated epoxy blends were attributed to nanoconfinement and tortuous pathway effects of organoclay rather than to carbonaceous char formation proposed earlier for polystyrene/organoclay systems without conventional flame retardants. Ternary nanocomposites are prepared by blending hydroxyl‐terminated poly ether ether ketone having pendant methyl groups (PEEKMOH) with epoxy resin along with Nanolin DK1, followed by curing with 4,4′‐diamino diphenyl sulphone. Differential scanning calorimetry shows a two‐stage cure behavior indicating the catalytic effect of the primary amine and proton, which are generated by the dissociation of organic modifier. Tensile and flexural moduli are increased while tensile strength and glass transition temperature are decreased with increase in clay concentration. Fracture toughness and strain at break are increased by 59 and 62%, respectively, with 1 phr clay loading. Transition electron microscopy and X‐ray diffraction (XRD) analysis reveal exfoliated morphology for the nanocomposites. Scanning electron micrographs show a decrease in both, domain size as well as inter domain distance of the thermoplastic phase with the addition of clay, indicating the occurrence of gelation before phase separation. Analysis of the fracture surface reveals crack path deflection and ductile fracture behavior, confirming that toughness has been improved with the addition of clay and PEEKMOH. Coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of the nanocomposites is decreased up to 3 phr clay loading. Oxygen gas permeability is compared with Bharadwaj's and Neilson's models. A marginal improvement in thermal stability is observed with the addition of clay. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this study, three chromophores—p‐nitroaniline, 4‐(4‐nitrophenylazo)aniline, and 4‐[(E)‐2‐{4‐[(E)‐2‐(4‐nitrophenyl)‐1‐diazenyl]phenyl}‐1‐diazenyl]aniline—were intercalated into layered aluminosilicate saponite and then dispersed into the polyurethanes matrix. The intercalated chromophore/saponite complexes were examined by inductively coupled plasma emission and element analysis technologies. The molecular orbital package computation simulation and X‐ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed that possible configurations of chromophore ions on the gallery surfaces of saponite suggest that the chromophore molecules lie parallel to the basal planes of silicate as an inclined paraffin structure or as pseudo‐multilayers. The XRD and transmission electron microscopy analysis indicated that the delamination of organoclay in the polyurethanes matrix exhibited nanolayers, exfoliated structure, or both. In particular, even at high doping levels up to 15 wt % of organoclay, the [chromophore]+‐saponite/polyurethanes film did not display a macroscopic aggregation of layered silicates and showed high transparency. The thermal stability of chromophore was significantly enhanced as intercalated into the layered aluminosilicate saponite, and the glass‐transition temperature of [chromophore]+‐saponite/polyurethanes nanocomposites proportionally increased with increased clay content. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Flammability of epoxy appears to be one of the greatest threats and hence limits its advanced applications. The present investigation, therefore, reports on vegetable oil-based self-extinguishing epoxy/clay nanocomposites for the first time. These nanocomposites were prepared by the ex-situ technique using mechanical shearing and ultrasonication at different loadings (1, 2.5 and 5 wt%) of nano-clay. Monoglyceride of Mesua ferrea L. seed oil, bisphenol-A and tetrabromobisphenol-A based epoxy resin was used as the matrix. XRD, TEM, SEM, FTIR and rheological studies confirmed partially exfoliated nanocomposites formation. The study demonstrates two fold improvements of tensile strength and scratch hardness, three-fold increase in adhesive strength and 20 units increase in gloss value without any change in impact resistance through nanocomposite formation. TG studied confirmed the enhancement of thermal stability of the nanocomposite by 25 °C. The limiting oxygen index values and UL 94 test indicated the self-extinguishing characteristic of the nanocomposites.  相似文献

Polyethylene (PE)‐layered vermiculite (VMT) nanocomposites were fabricated via direct melt compounding in a twin‐screw extruder followed by injection molding. Exfoliated PE/VMT nanocomposites were readily prepared via in situ melt mixing of maleic anhydride modified VMT with PE. Maleic anhydride acts as either the intercalation agent for VMT or as a compatibilizer for the PE and VMT phases. X‐ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopic observations revealed the formation of exfoliated PE/VMT nanocomposites. The experimental results showed that the storage modulus and strength of nanocomposites tend to increase with an increasing VMT content. Nearly 25.35% increment in the tensile strength and 50% increment in the storage modulus were achieved by incorporating 4 wt % VMT into PE. The thermal properties of the nanocomposites were investigated by dynamic mechanical analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. The glass‐transition temperature of PE/VMT nanocomposites appeared to increase upon the introduction of VMT into the PE matrix. The effects of maleic anhydride addition on the formation of the PE/VMT nanocomposites are discussed. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 41: 1476–1484, 2003  相似文献
