The controlled free‐radical polymerization of styrene and chloromethylstyrene monomers in the presence of 2,2,6,6‐tetramethyl‐1‐piperidinyloxyl (TEMPO) has been studied with the aim of synthesizing block copolymers with well‐defined structures. First, TEMPO‐capped poly(chloromethylstyrene) was prepared. Among several initiating systems [self‐initiation, dicumyl peroxide, and 2,2′‐azobis(isobutyronitrile)], the last offered the best compromise for obtaining a good control of the polymerization and a fast polymerization rate. The rate of the TEMPO‐mediated polymerization of chloromethylstyrene was independent of the initial concentration of TEMPO but unexpectedly higher than the rate of the thermal self‐initiated polymerization of chloromethylstyrene. Transfer reactions to the chloromethyl groups were thought to play an important role in the polymerization kinetics and the polydispersity index of the resulting poly(chloromethylstyrene). Second, this first block was used as a macroinitiator in the polymerization of styrene to obtain the desired poly(chloromethylstyrene‐b‐styrene) block copolymer. The kinetic modeling of the block copolymerization was in good agreement with experimental data. The block copolymers obtained in this work exhibited a low polydispersity index (weight‐average molecular weight/number‐average molecular weight < 1.5) and could be chemically modified with nucleophilic substitution reactions on the benzylic site, opening the way to a great variety of architectures. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. In this study, new nitroxides based on the 2,2,5‐trimethyl‐4‐phenyl‐3‐azahexane‐3‐oxy skeleton were used to examine chain‐end control during the preparation of polystyrene and poly(t‐butyl acrylate) under living free‐radical conditions. Alkoxyamine‐based initiators with a chromophore attached to either the initiating fragment or the mediating nitroxide fragment were prepared, and the extent of the incorporation of the chromophores at either the initiating end or the propagating chain end was determined. In contrast to 2,2,6,6‐tetramethyl piperidinoxy (TEMPO), the incorporation of the initiating and terminating fragment into the polymer chain was extremely high. For both poly(t‐butyl acrylate) and polystyrene with molecular weights less than or equal to 70,000, incorporations at the initiating end of greater than 97% were observed. At the terminating chain end, incorporations of greater than 95% were obtained for molecular weights less than or equal to 50,000. The level of incorporation tended to decrease slightly at higher molecular weights because of the loss of the alkoxyamine propagating unit, which had important consequences for block copolymer formation. These results clearly show that these new α‐H nitroxides could control the polymerization of vinyl monomers such as styrene and t‐butyl acrylate to an extremely high degree, comparable to anionic and atom transfer radical polymerization procedures. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Star‐branched polystyrenes, with polydispersity indices of 1.15–1.56 and 4–644 equal arms, were synthesized by the reaction of 2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidin‐1‐yloxy (TEMPO)‐capped polystyrene (PS‐T) with divinylbenzene (DVB). The characterization of PS‐T and the final star polymers was carried out by size exclusion chromatography, low‐angle laser light scattering, and viscometry. The degree of branching of the star polymers depended on the DVB/PS‐T ratio and the PS‐T molecular weight. An asymmetric (or miktoarm) star homopolymer of the PSnPS′n type was made by the reaction of the PSn symmetric star, which had n TEMPO molecules on its nucleus and consisted of a multifunctional initiator, with extra styrene. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The controlled nitroxide‐mediated homopolymerization of 9‐(4‐vinylbenzyl)‐9H‐carbazole (VBK) and the copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) with varying amounts of VBK were accomplished by using 10 mol % {tert‐butyl[1‐(diethoxyphosphoryl)‐2,2‐dimethylpropyl]amino} nitroxide relative to 2‐({tert‐butyl[1‐(diethoxyphosphoryl)‐2,2‐dimethylpropyl]amino}oxy)‐2‐methylpropionic acid (BlocBuilder?) in dimethylformamide at temperatures from 80 to 125 °C. As little as 1 mol % of VBK in the feed was required to obtain a controlled copolymerization of an MMA/VBK mixture, resulting in a linear increase in molecular weight versus conversion with a narrow molecular weight distribution (Mw /Mn ≈ 1.3). Preferential incorporation of VBK into the copolymer was indicated by the MMA/VBK reactivity ratios determined: rVBK = 2.7 ± 1.5 and rMMA = 0.24 ± 0.14. The copolymers were found significantly “living” by performing subsequent chain extensions with a fresh batch of VBK and by 31P NMR spectroscopy analysis. VBK was found to be an effective controlling comonomer for NMP of MMA, and such low levels of VBK comonomer ensured transparency in the final copolymer. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Gas/vapor‐deposition polymerization (GDP) of vinyl monomer is expected to exhibit a unique polymerization behavior different from its polymerization in the liquid phase. Free‐radical GDP of 2,2,3,3,3‐pentafluoropropyl methacrylate (FMA) was carried out with a conventional free‐radical initiator (azobisisobutyronitrile) on substrate surfaces. A linear relationship between the number‐average molecular weight and polymer yield was observed, and the consecutive copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and FMA led to the formation of block copolymer P(MMA‐block‐FMA). These results suggested that the GDP process on substrate surfaces has a living nature. During the process, the active species at growing chain ends may be immobilized on the deposit surface and restricted from the chain‐transfer reactions, resulting in a continuation of the propagation reaction. The GDP on substrate surfaces is therefore a physically controlled polymerization process. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 42: 2621–2630, 2004  相似文献

The 2,6‐spirodicyclohexyl substituted nitroxide, cyclohexane‐1‐spiro‐2′‐(3′,5′‐dioxo‐4′‐benzylpiperazine‐1′‐oxyl)‐6′‐spiro‐1″‐cyclohexane (BODAZ), was investigated as a mediator for controlled/living free‐radical polymerization of styrene. The values of the number‐average molecular weight increased linearly with conversion, but the polydispersities were higher than for the corresponding 2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidinyl‐1‐oxy (TEMPO) and 2,5‐bis(spirocyclohexyl)‐3‐benzylimidazolidin‐4‐one‐1‐oxyl (NO88Bn) mediated systems at approximately 2.2 and 1.6 at 100 and 120 °C, respectively. These results were reflected in the rate coefficients obtained by electron spin resonance spectroscopy; at 120 °C, the values of the rate coefficients for polystyrene‐BODAZ alkoxyamine dissociation (kd), combination of BODAZ and propagating radicals (kc), and the equilibrium constant (K) were 1.60 × 10?5 s?1, 5.19 × 106 M?1 s?1, and 3.08 × 10?12 M, respectively. The value of kd was approximately one and two orders of magnitude lower, and that of K was approximately 20 and 7 times lower than for the NO88Bn and TEMPO adducts. These results are explained in terms of X‐ray crystal structures of BODAZ and NO88Bn; the six‐membered ring of BODAZ deviates significantly from planarity as compared to the planar five‐membered ring of NO88Bn and possesses a benzyl substituent oriented away from the nitroxyl group leading to a seemingly more exposed oxyl group, which resulted in a higher kc and a lower kd than NO88Bn. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Nitroxide‐mediated, controlled living radical polymerization was employed to introduce terpyridine ligands at one or two chain ends of polystyrene. For this purpose, a unimolecular initiator bearing both a terpyridine ligand as well as a mediating nitroxide was synthesized and used for the controlled polymerization of styrene. Moreover, a maleimide‐functionalized terpyridine was prepared in order to synthesize telechelic polymers, utilizing nitroxide substitution reactions. Kinetic studies of the polymerization of styrene were carried out. In all polymerizations, special attention was focused on the retention of end‐group functionality, in light of the effects of autoinitiation and autopolymerization. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Styrene radical polymerizations mediated by the imidazolidinone nitroxides 2,5‐bis(spirocyclohexyl)‐3‐methylimidazolidin‐4‐one‐1‐oxyl (NO88Me) and 2,5‐bis(spirocyclohexyl)‐3‐benzylimidazolidin‐4‐one‐1‐oxyl (NO88Bn) were investigated. Polymeric alkoxyamine (PS‐NO88Bn)‐initiated systems exhibited controlled/living characteristics at 100–120 °C but not at 80 °C. All systems exhibited rates of polymerization similar to those of thermal polymerization, with the exception of the PS‐NO88Bn system at 80 °C, which polymerized twice as quickly. The dissociation rate constants (kd) for the PS‐NO88Me and PS‐NO88Bn coupling products were determined by electron spin resonance at 50–100 °C. The equilibrium constants were estimated to be 9.01 × 10?11 and 6.47 × 10?11 mol L?1 at 120 °C for NO88Me and NO88Bn, respectively, resulting in the combination rate constants (kc) 2.77 × 106 (NO88Me) and 2.07 × 106 L mol?1 s?1 (NO88Bn). The similar polymerization results and kinetic parameters for NO88Me and NO88Bn indicated the absence of any 3‐N‐transannular effect by the benzyl substituent relative to the methyl substituent. The values of kd and kc were 4–8 and 25–33 times lower, respectively, than the reported values for PS‐TEMPO at 120 °C, indicating that the 2,5‐spirodicyclohexyl rings have a more profound effect on the combination reaction rather than the dissociation reaction. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Nitroxides bearing an α‐hydrogen decompose upon heating in a bimolecular reaction. A new mechanism is proposed for the decomposition of t‐butylisopropylphenyl nitroxide (TIPNO) involving the formation of a head‐to‐tail dimer, single electron transfer to form an oxammonium salt, epimerization to the corresponding nitrone, and elimination to form a conjugated oxime. This mechanism may provide insights into designing new nitroxides for use in controlled polymerization. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 44: 697–717, 2006  相似文献

2‐Phenyl‐2‐[(2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidino)oxy] ethyl 2‐bromopropanoate was successfully used as an initiator in consecutive living radical polymerization routes, such as metal‐catalyzed living radical polymerization and nitroxide‐mediated free‐radical polymerization, to produce various types of acrylonitrile‐containing polymers, such as styrene–acrylonitrile, polystyrene‐b‐styrene–acrylonitrile, polystyrene‐b‐poly(n‐butyl acrylate)‐b‐polyacrylonitrile, and polystyrene‐b‐polyacrylonitrile. The kinetic data were obtained for the metal‐catalyzed living radical polymerization of styrene–acrylonitrile. All the obtained polymers were characterized with 1H NMR, gel permeation chromatography, and differential scanning calorimetry. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The present work describes a combination of microwave irradiation as a heating source and water as a solvent for carrying out a living/controlled polymerization of acrylamide. Reasonable results were obtained for a nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization (NMP) with a combination of a conventional hydrosoluble radical initiator and a β‐phosphonylated nitroxide. The microwave enhancement of the polymerization was found to depend on the mode of irradiation, i.e., either a dynamic (DYN) mode or an pulse (SPS) mode. The former mode corresponded to a dynamic control of the temperature by way of a high initial microwave power, and in this case, no specific microwave effect was observed. On the other hand, in the SPS mode, which is a pulsed power mode, the result showed a strong acceleration of the polymerization process (>50 times) without the loss of the living/controlled polymerization characteristics, which is relevant with a reinitiation of the polyacrylamide macroinitiator even after 100% of conversion. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Nitroxide‐mediated emulsion polymerizations of n‐butyl acrylate and styrene were performed with a monofunctional, water‐soluble alkoxyamine initiator and a difunctional one. Two different processes were applied, either in two steps or under semibatch conditions. In particular, the polymerization times were strongly reduced, while high conversions and good control over the polymer characteristics were maintained. In all cases, stable latexes were recovered; with the difunctional initiator in particular, they exhibited small particles and narrow particle size distributions. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An asymmetric difunctional initiator 2‐phenyl‐2‐[(2,2,6,6 tetramethylpiperidino)oxy] ethyl 2‐bromo propanoate ( 1 ) was used for the synthesis of ABC‐type methyl methacrylate (MMA)‐tert‐butylacrylate (tBA)‐styrene (St) triblock copolymers via a combination of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and stable free‐radical polymerization (SFRP). The ATRP‐ATRP‐SFRP or SFRP‐ATRP‐ATRP route led to ABC‐type triblock copolymers with controlled molecular weight and moderate polydispersity (Mw/Mn < 1.35). The block copolymers were characterized by gel permeation chromatography and 1H NMR. The retaining chain‐end functionality and the applying halide exchange afforded high blocking efficiency as well as maintained control over entire routes. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis of new 7‐membered diazepanone alkoxyamines [2,2,7,7‐tetramethyl‐1‐(1‐phenyl‐ethoxy)‐[1,4]diazepan‐5‐one ( 3 ) and 2,7‐diethyl‐2,3,7‐trimethyl‐1‐(1‐phenyl‐ethoxy)‐[1,4]diazepan‐5‐one ( 8 )] through the Beckmann rearrangement of piperidin‐4‐one alkoxyamines was developed. Both 3 and 8 were evaluated as initiators and regulators for the nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization of styrene and n‐butyl acrylate. 8 , a sterically highly hindered alkoxyamine readily available as a crystalline solid, allowed the fast and controlled polymerization and preparation of polymers with low polydispersity indices (1.2–1.4) up to a degree of polymerization of about 100. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A detailed exploration of the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of a sugar‐carrying monomer, 6‐O‐methacryloyl‐1,2;3,4‐di‐O‐isopropylidene‐D‐galactopyranose (MAIPGal) was performed. The factors pertinent to ATRP, such as initiators, ligands, catalysts, and temperature were optimized to obtain good control over the polymerization. The kinetics were examined in detail when the polymerization was initiated by methyl 2‐bromoisopropionate (2‐MBP), ethyl 2‐bromoisobutyrate (2‐EBiB), or a macroinitiator, [α‐(2‐bromoisobutyrylate)‐ω‐methyl PEO] (PEO–Br), with bipyridine (bipy) as the ligand at 60 °C or by 2‐EiBB with N,N,N′,N″,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA) as the ligand at room temperature (23 °C). The effects of the catalysts (CuBr and CuCl) were also investigated. We demonstrate that the successful ATRP of MAIPGal can be achieved for 2‐EBiB/CuBr/bipy and 2‐MBP/CuCl/bipy at 60 °C and for 2‐EBiB/CuBr/PMDETA at room temperature. The initiation by 2‐EBiB at room temperature with PMDETA as the ligand should be the most optimum operation for its moderate condition and suppression of many side reactions. Chain extension of P(MAIPGal) prepared by ATRP with methyl methacrylate (MMA) as the second monomer was carried out and a diblock copolymer, P(MAIPGal)‐b‐PMMA, was obtained. Functional polymers, poly(D‐galactose 6‐methacrylate) (PGMA), PEO‐b‐PGMA, and PGMA‐b‐PMMA were obtained after removal of the protecting groups. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An easy and novel approach to the synthesis of functionalized nanostructured polymeric particles is reported. The surfactant‐free emulsion polymerization of methyl methacrylate in the presence of the crosslinking reagent 2‐ethyl‐2‐(hydroxy methyl)‐1,3‐propanediol trimethacrylate was used to in situ crosslink colloid micelles to produce stable, crosslinked polymeric particles (diameter size ~ 100–300 nm). A functionalized methacrylate monomer, 2‐methacryloxyethyl‐2′‐bromoisobutyrate, containing a dormant atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) living free‐radical initiator, which is termed an inimer (initiator/monomer), was added to the solution during the polymerization to functionalize the surface of the particles with ATRP initiator groups. The surface‐initiated ATRP of different monomers was then carried out to produce core–shell‐type polymeric nanostructures. This versatile technique can be easily employed for the design of a wide variety of polymeric shells surrounding a crosslinked core while keeping good control over the sizes of the nanostructures. The particles were characterized with scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, optical microscopy, dynamic light scattering, and Raman spectroscopy. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The macroinitiator of a copolymer (PMDBTM) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and 2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DAMA) with 4‐benzyloxy‐2,2,6,6‐tetramethyl‐1‐piperidinyloxy (BTEMPO) pendant groups was prepared by the photochemical reaction of tertiary amine groups of the copolymer with benzophenone in the presence of BTEMPO. The radical copolymerization of MMA and DAMA was carried out first with azo‐bis‐isobutyronitrile (AIBN) as an initiator; then, the dimethylamine groups of the copolymer constituted a charge‐transfer complex with benzophenone under UV irradiation, and the methylene of ternary amine and diphenyl methanol radicals were produced. The former was capped by BTEMPO, and the nitroxide (BTEMPO) was attached to the polymeric backbone. The amount of pendant BTEMPO on PMDBTM was measured by 1H NMR. PMDBTM initiated the graft polymerization of styrene via a controlled radical mechanism, and the molecular weight of the PMD‐g‐polystyrene increased with the polymerization time. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Phenacyl morpholine‐4‐dithiocarbamate is synthesized and characterized. Its capability to act as both a photoiniferter and reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer agent for the polymerization of styrene is examined. Polymerization carried out in bulk under ultra violet irradiation at above 300 nm at room temperature shows controlled free radical polymerization characteristics up to 50% conversions and produces well‐defined polymers with molecular weights close to those predicted from theory and relatively narrow poyldispersities (Mw/Mn ~ 1.30). End group determination and block copolymerization with methyl acrylate suggest that morpholino dithiocarbamate groups were attained at the end of the polymer. Photolysis and polymerization studies revealed that polymerization proceeds via both reversible termination and RAFT mechanisms. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
