In this comparative study, the effect of carbon black (CB) on the UV aging characteristics of poly(ethylene‐co‐vinyl acetate) (EVA) was investigated. EVA, containing 13% vinyl acetate (VA), and poly(ethylene‐co‐vinyl acetate)/carbon black mixture (EVA/CB), containing 13% VA and 1% CB, were aged by means of UV light with a wavelength in the vicinity of 259 nm, in air, up to 400 hr. Sol‐gel analyses were made to determine the percentage gelation of both virgin and aged samples. FT‐IR measurements were performed to follow the chemical changes which took place in the samples during aging. Dynamic and isothermal thermogravimetry studies were performed for determination of the thermal stabilities of virgin and aged samples. Sol‐gel analysis results showed that EVA itself has a tendency to form a gel under UV irradiation. EVA/CB, however, becomes a gel to a smaller extent, comparatively, under the same conditions. As a result of FT‐IR measurements, some oxidation products such as ketone, lactone and vinyl species were observed through UV ageing of EVA and EVA/CB. Thermal analysis experiments exhibited that the thermal stabilities of EVA and EVA/CB decreased, to a similar extent through UV aging. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Solid‐state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and relaxation measurements, together with DSC, have been used to elucidate the structures and molecular dynamics in poly(ethylene‐co‐vinyl acetate) (EVA). It has been found that besides immobile orthorhombic and monoclinic crystalline phases, the third mobile crystalline phase (possibly the phase) of a considerable amount (36% of total crystalline phases) appears in the EVA samples, which forms during room‐temperature aging as a result of the secondary crystallization and melts at temperature somewhat higher than room temperature. Such a mobile crystalline phase has not only the well‐defined chemical shift of its own, but also has different molecular mobility from the orthorhombic phase. The mobile crystalline phase is characterized by the rapid relaxation of the longitudinal magnetization, which is caused by conventional spin‐lattice relaxation, while the slow relaxation of the longitudinal magnetization occurring in the orthorhombic phase is originated from the chain diffusion. In addition, the amorphous phase also contains two components: an interfacial amorphous phase and a melt‐like amorphous phase. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The diffusion and transport of organic solvents through crosslinked nitrile rubber/poly(ethylene‐co‐vinyl acetate) (NBR/EVA) blends have been studied. The diffusion of cyclohexanone through these blends was studied with special reference to blend composition, crosslinking systems, fillers, filler loading, and temperature. At room temperature the mechanism of diffusion was found to be Fickian for cyclohexanone–NBR/EVA blend systems. However, a deviation from the Fickian mode of diffusion is observed at higher temperature. The transport coefficients, namely, intrinsic diffusion coefficient (D*), sorption coefficient (S), and permeation coefficient (P) increase with the increase in NBR content. The sorption data have been used to estimate the activation energies for permeation and diffusion. The van't Hoff relationship was used to determine the thermodynamic parameters. The affine and phantom models for chemical crosslinks were used to predict the nature of crosslinks. The experimental results were compared with the theoretical predictions. The influence of penetrants transport was studied using dichloromethane, chloroform, and carbon tetrachloride. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci B: Polym Phys 37: 1815–1831, 1999  相似文献

Poly(ethylene‐co‐vinyl acetate) (EVA) plastic films are widely used for solar coverings including photovoltaic modules and commercial greenhouse films, but are poor at controlling heat flow. In this work, silica aerogel (SA) nanogels were examined for preparing transparent heat retention EVA films that block far infrared spectra radiation to maintain heat, without compromising the optical performance of the films. SA nanogels were melt‐mixed using a mini twin‐screw extruder with EVA pellets to form SA/EVA composite, which were pressed into thin films with controlled thickness. The composite films were characterized in terms of optical properties using a variety of analytical methods including FTIR, UV–Vis spectroscopy, electron, confocal, and atomic force microscopy. Both thermicity and thermal conductivity of commercial and experimental SA/EVA films were measured. The results demonstrated that the SA/EVA films gave improved infrared retention compared to commercial thermal plastic films without compromising visible light transmission, showing the potential for this approach in next generation heat retention films. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The transport behavior of uncrosslinked and crosslinked poly(ethylene‐co‐vinyl acetate) membranes has been investigated using normal alkanes as probe molecules, in the temperature range of 30–60 °C. Benzoyl peroxide was used for crosslinking the matrix. It has been observed that, a critical concentration of crosslinker is necessary for maximum solvent uptake, followed by a decrease at higher concentration. The effect of free volume on liquid transport was investigated by positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy. The mechanism of transport has been found to deviate from the regular Fickian behavior. The dependence of the transport coefficients on crosslink density, nature of penetrants, and temperature was studied. The polymer–solvent interaction parameter, enthalpy, and entropy of sorption have also been estimated from the transport data. The affine and phantom models for chemical crosslinks were used to predict the nature of crosslinks. Finally, the experimental sorption data were compared with theoretical predictions. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 45: 2470–2480, 2007  相似文献

In this comparative study, the effect of gamma rays on the ageing characteristics of poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) (EVA) and poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate)/carbon black mixture (EVA/CB) was investigated in terms of thermal stability. EVA, containing 13% vinyl acetate (VA), and EVA/CB, containing 13% VA and 1% carbon black (CB), were aged at 85°C in air up to 30 weeks for thermal ageing. Same substances were aged by means of UV light with a wavelength in the vicinity of 259 nm, in air, up to 400 h for UV ageing. Same substances were also irradiated with gamma rays at ambient conditions up to 400 kGy. Following these experiments, samples which had been irradiated with gamma rays, were subjected to thermal and UV ageing under the same conditions as for unirradiated samples. Dynamic thermogravimetry studies were performed for determination of the thermal stabilities of the samples. 10 and 50% mass losses were calculated for the samples from their respective curves. As a result of thermal analysis experiments, it was found that CB dramatically loses its protective property against thermal ageing of EVA after gamma irradiation. On the other hand, gamma irradiation does not have any significant effect on the UV ageing characteristics of EVA and EVA/CB in terms of thermal stability.  相似文献

Polypropylene/ethylene‐co‐vinyl acetate (PP/EVA) nanocomposites with functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (FMWCNTs) have been prepared. The dissolution experiment, transmission electronic microscope, and scanning electronic microscope characterizations prove that, in the nanocomposites with sea–island morphology, although some FMWCNTs are observed in both PP and EVA phases, most of FMWCNTs distribute at the interface; however, in the nanocomposites with cocontinuous morphology, FMWCNTs mainly distribute in EVA phase. Further results based on (differential scanning calorimetry) measurements show that the different dispersion states of FMWCNTs, which are resulted by the different melt blending sequences, result in the different crystallization behaviors of PP matrix. The mechanical measurements show that FMWCNTs exhibit apparent reinforcement and toughening effects for immiscible PP/EVA blends, and such effects are greatly dependent upon the blending sequences. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The grafting preference of vinyl acetate onto the methine carbon of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVOH) versus the acetate group of poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) was determined as part of an attempt to prepare novel branched PVOH from partially hydrolyzed PVAc. The results showed long chain grafting on the acetate groups of the PVAc units rather than the methine carbons of the PVOH or PVAc units. Decreasing the monomer or initiator concentration decreased the molecular weight of the graft copolymer formed. Of the initiators studied, ammonium persulfate gave the largest increase in copolymer molecular weight. Both hydrolysis and reacetylation combined with gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and 13C-NMR of the fully hydrolyzed material were used to estimate the number and location of grafts. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Liquid–liquid thermally induced phase separation of the polymer‐diluent system of poly(ethylene‐co‐vinyl alcohol) (EVOH)‐glycerol was examined under light scattering. For EVOH with an ethylene content of 38 mol % (EVOH38), maxima of the scattered light intensity were observed that indicated that phase separation occurred by the spinodal decomposition (SD). The growth of the structures formed by the general liquid–liquid phase separation obeyed a power‐law scaling relationship in SD. For EVOH with an ethylene content of 32 mol % (EVOH32), the liquid–liquid phase separation resulted from the polymer crystallization. In this case, the structure growth showed the characteristic behavior in which the crystalline particles were initially formed, and then the droplets formed by the liquid–liquid phase separation induced by the crystallization grew rapidly. Furthermore, the growth of the droplet by the phase separation was followed by an optical microscope measurement at a constant cooling rate. The phase‐separated structure formed after the crystallization can grow faster than that formed by the normal liquid–liquid phase separation. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this report, a graphene/poly(ethylene‐co‐vinyl acetate) composite electrode was fabricated by melt compounding for the amperometric detection of capillary electrophoresis. The composite electrode was fabricated by packing a mixture of graphene and melted poly(ethylene‐co‐vinyl acetate) in a piece of fused silica capillary under heat. The structure of the composite was investigated by scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results indicated that graphene sheets were well dispersed in the composite to form an interconnected conducting network. The performance of this unique graphene‐based detector has been demonstrated by separating and detecting rutin, quercitrin, kaempferol, and quercetin in Cacumen platycladi in combination with capillary electrophoresis. The four flavones have been well separated within 9 min in a 50‐cm‐long capillary at a separation voltage of 12 kV using a 50 mM sodium borate buffer (pH 9.2). The graphene‐based detector offered significantly lower operating potentials, substantially enhanced signal‐to‐noise characteristics, lower expense of operation, high resistance to surface fouling, and enhanced stability. It showed long‐term stability and repeatability with relative standard deviations of <5% for the peak current (n = 15).  相似文献

Poly(D ,L ‐lactide) and poly(D ,L ‐lactide‐co‐glycolide) with various composition and with one methacrylate and one carboxylate end group were synthesized and grafted onto poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) via the carboxylate group. The graft copolymers were crosslinked via the methacrylate groups using a free radical initiator. The polymer networks were characterized by means of NMR and studied qualitatively by means of IR spectroscopy. The influence of the glycolide content in the polyester grafts and of the number of ester units in the grafts on thermal properties and swellability were studied as well. The high swellability in water is characteristic of all hydrogels. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) showed a single glass transition temperature that occurs in the range between 51 and 69 °C. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) of the networks showed the main loss in weight in the temperature range between 290 and 370 °C. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The melt crystallization behaviors and crystalline structures of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), poly(trimethylene terephthalate), and poly(ethylene‐co‐trimethylene terephthalate) (PETT) were investigated with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized optical microscopy (POM), and X‐ray diffraction at various crystallization temperatures (Tcs). The PETT copolymers were synthesized via the polycondensation of terephthalate with ethylene glycol and trimethylene glycol (TG) in various compositions. The copolymers with 69.0 mol % or more TG or 31.0 mol % or less TG were crystallizable, but the other copolymers containing 34–56 mol % TG were amorphous. The DSC isothermal results revealed that the addition of a small amount of flexible TG (up to 21 mol %) to the PET structure slightly reduced the formation of three‐dimensional spherulites. A greater TG concentration (91–100%) in the copolyesters changed the crystal growth from two‐dimensional to three‐dimensional. The DSC heating scans after the completion of isothermal crystallization at various Tcs showed three melting endotherms for PET, PETT‐88, PETT‐84, and PETT‐79 and four melting endotherms for PETT‐9 and PETT. The presence of an additional melting endotherm could be attributed to the melting of thinner and imperfect copolyester crystallites. Analyses of the Lauritzen–Hoffman equation demonstrated that PETT‐88 had the highest values of the product of the lateral and folding surface free energies, and this suggested that the addition of small amounts of flexible trimethylene terephthalate segments to PET disturbed chain regularity, thus increasing molecular chain mobility. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Radiation effects on the formation of conjugated double bonds in the thermal degradation of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) were investigated. Thin films of PVC and PVA were either irradiated with γ-rays at ambient temperature (pre-irradiation) and then subjected to thermal treatment, or irradiated at elevated temperatures (in situ irradiation). An extensive enhancement of the thermal degradation was observed for the pre-irradiation of the PVC films, which was more effective than the effect of the in situ irradiation at the same absorption dose. For the PVA degradation, however, the effect of the in situ irradiation was larger than that of the pre-irradiation. The results were explained and related mechanisms were discussed based on radiation-induced chemical reactions and their individual contributions to the thermal degradation behaviors of the two polymers. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The intermolecular interactions between poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) and poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) in tetrahydrofuran (THF), methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) and N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) were thoroughly investigated by the viscosity measurement. It has been found that the solvent selected has a great influence upon the polymer-polymer interactions in solution. If using PVAc and THF, or PVAc and DMF to form polymer solvent, the intrinsic viscosity of PVC in polymer solvent of (PVAc+THF) or (PVAc+DMF) is less than in corresponding pure solvent of THF or DMF. On the contrary, if using PVAc and MEK to form polymer solvent, the intrinsic viscosity of PVC in polymer solvent of (PVAc+MEK) is larger than in pure solvent of MEK. The influence of solvent upon the polymer-polymer interactions also comes from the interaction parameter term Δb, developed from modified Krigbaum and Wall theory. If PVC/PVAc blends with the weight ratio of 1/1 was dissolved in THF or DMF, Δb<0. On the contrary, if PVC/PVAc blends with the same weight ratio was dissolved in MEK, Δb>0. These experimental results show that the compatibility of PVC/PVAc blends is greatly associated with the solvent from which polymer mixtures were cast. The agreement of these results with differential scanning calorimetry measurements of PVC/PVAc blends casting from different solvents is good.  相似文献

Poly(vinylidene chloride‐co‐vinylchloride)/organically modified fluorinated synthetic mica (MEE) (VDC‐VC/MEE) nanocomposites were prepared by melt blending of VDC‐VC copolymer with MEE, in the presence of dioctyl phthalate (DOP) which acted as a plasticizer and a cointercalating agent. The nanostructure, thermal, and dynamic mechanical properties of the VDC‐VC/MEE nanocomposites were studied by wide angle X‐ray diffractometer (WAXD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), and dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA). It was found that partially intercalated and partially exfoliated structures coexisted in VDC‐VC/MEE nanocomposities. Below 8 wt % MEE content, the intercalation effect of nanocomposites decreased with increasing the MEE content. Under a nitrogen atmosphere, VDC‐VC/MEE nanocomposites exhibited a single step thermal degradation behavior. The nanostructure of VDC‐VC/MEE can effectively prevent volatile gases from being released, and thus enhances its thermal stability. The thermal stability of VDC‐VC/MEE nanocomposites is strongly related to the morphology of nanocomposites and the degraded composites structure. DMA revealed a significant improvement in the storage modulus within the testing temperature range. The increase in storage modulus depends on the MEE content, which is attributed to the dispersed phase morphology. The glass transition temperature of VDC‐VC/MEE nanocomposites is affected by the chain mobility in the nanocomposites rather than the aggregative morphology. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This study investigated and discovered a new miscible ternary blend system comprising three amorphous polymers: poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc), poly(vinyl p‐phenol) (PVPh), and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) using thermal analysis and optical and scanning electron microscopies. The ternary compositions are largely miscible except for a small region of borderline ternary miscibility near the side, where the binary blends of PVAc/PMMA are originally of a borderline miscibility with broad Tg. In addition to the discovering miscibility in a new ternary blend, another objective of this study was to investigate whether the introduction of a third polymer component (PVPh) with hydrogen bonding capacity might disrupt or enhance the metastable miscibility between PVAc and PMMA. The PVPh component does not seem to exert any “bridging effect” to bring the mixture of PVAc and PMMA to a better state of miscibility; neither does the Δχ effect seem to disrupt the borderline miscible PVAc/PMMA blend into a phase‐separated system by introducing PVPh. Apparently, the ternary is able to remain in as a miscible state as the binary systems owing to the fact that PVPh is capable of maintaining roughly equal H‐bonding interactions with either PVAc or PMMA in the ternary mixtures to maintain balanced interactions among the ternary mixtures. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(L ‐lactide) (PLLA)/poly(butylene succinate‐co‐butylene adipate) (PBSA) blends were compounded with Cloisite 25A® (C25A) and C25A functionalized with epoxy groups, respectively. Epoxy groups on the surface of C25A were introduced by treating C25A with (glycidoxypropyl)trimethoxy silane (GPS) to produce so called Twice Functionalized Organoclay (TFC). Variation of morphology and properties of PLLA/PBSA/C25A composites was investigated before and after the treatment with GPS. The morphological structure of the composites was analyzed by using X‐ray diffractometry (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The silicate layers of PLLA/PBSA/TFC were exfoliated to a larger extent than PLLA/PBSA/C25A. Incorporation of the epoxy groups on C25A improved significantly elongation at break as well as tensile modulus and tensile strength of PLLA/PBSA/C25A. The larger amount of exfoliation of the silicate layers in PLLA/PBSA/TFC as compared with that in PLLA/PBSA/C25A was attributed to the increased interfacial interaction between the polyesters and the clay due to chemical reaction. Thermo gravimetric analysis revealed that both T5%, which was the temperature corresponding to 5% weight loss, and activation energy of thermal decomposition of PLLA/PBSA/TFC were far superior to those of PLLA/PBSA/C25A as well as to those of PLLA/PBSA, indicating that the composites with exfoliated silicate layers were more thermally stable than those with intercalated silicate layers. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This work examined the miscibility, crystallization kinetics, and melting behavior of melt‐mixed poly(trimethylene terephthalate) (PTT)/poly(ethylene‐co‐cyclohexane 1,4‐dimethanol terephthalate) (PETG) blends. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction techniques were used to approach the goals. The single composition‐dependent glass‐transition temperatures of the blends and the equilibrium melting temperature (T) depression of PTT in the blends indicated the miscible characteristic of the blend system at all compositions. T of pure PTT, determined with a conventional extrapolative method, was 525.8 K. Furthermore, the Flory–Huggins interaction parameter was estimated to be ?0.38. The dynamic and isothermal crystallization abilities of PTT were hindered by the incorporation of PETG. A complex melting behavior was observed for pure PTT and its blends. The observed complex melting behavior resulted mainly from the recrystallization and/or reorganization of the originally formed crystals during the heating scans. For the samples crystallized under the same conditions, the degree of recrystallization and/or reorganization declined with increasing PETG contents in the blends. The preliminary results obtained from the DSC experiments suggested that untraceable interchange reactions occurred in the studied blends. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Segmented copolyesters, namely, poly(butylene terephthalate)–poly(ethylene terephthalate‐co‐isophthalate‐co‐sebacate) (PBT‐PETIS), were synthesized with the melting transesterification processing in vacuo condition involving bulk polyester produced on a large scale (PBT) and ternary amorphous random copolyester (PETIS). Investigations on the morphology of segmented copolyesters were undertaken. The two‐phase morphology model was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. One of the phases was composed of crystallizable PBT, and the other was a homogeneous mixture of PETIS and noncrystallizable PBT. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
