Mesoporous polymer microspheres with gold (Au) nanoparticles inside their pores were prepared considering their surface functionality and porosity. The Au/polymer composite microspheres prepared were characterized by transmission electron microscope (TEM), X‐ray diffraction (XRD), and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) techniques. The results showed that the adsorption of Au nanoparticles could be increased by imparting the pore structure and surface‐functional groups into the supporting polymer microspheres (in this study, poly (ethylene glycol dimethacrylate‐co‐acrylonitrile) and poly (EGDMA‐co‐AN) system). Above all, from this study, it was established that the porosity of the polymer microspheres is the most important factor that determines the distribution and adsorption amount of face‐centered cubic (fcc) Au nanoparticles in the final products. Our study showed that the continuous adsorption of Au nanoparticles with the aid of the large surface area and surface interaction sites formed more favorably the Au/polymer composite microspheres. The BET measurements of Au/poly(EGDMA‐co‐AN) composite microspheres reveals that the adsorption of Au nanoparticles into the pores kept the pore structure intact and made it more porous. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The morphological effect of polymeric networks (R) modified with terminal amino groups was studied on the adsorption of bovine serum albumin (BSA). Networks of ethylene glycol dimethacrylate and 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate [poly (EGDMA‐co‐HEMA)] were synthesized by suspension polymerization, using different EGDMA contents and agitation speeds. These matrices were characterized by FTIR, mercury intrusion porosimetry, SEM, and swelling degree. The increase of the EGDMA concentration led to the formation of networks with the highest crosslinking degree and porosity. An earlier phase separation yielded a higher aggregation of rigid microspheres, also forming stable pore systems. The increase in coalescence frequency, together with the impeller speed, and the decrease of the stabilizer molecules led to an increment in drop size. Large fused aggregates of microspheres were formed with additional loss of small pores as the stirring was increased, attaining also a higher pore volume (Vp) and a slight decrease of the surface area. Once characterized, networks were activated with butanediolglycidyl ether (BDGE), and then reacted with hexamethylenediamine (HMDA) through coupling reaction. Only the R‐BDGE‐HMDA networks synthesized with the highest EGDMA content and agitation speed showed BSA adsorption. Their base matrices exhibited a Vp higher than 1.4 mL/g, which allows easier protein diffusion into the support. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Fully crosslinked, stable poly(styrene‐co‐divinylbenzene) microspheres were prepared by precipitation polymerization, and a new mechanism is proposed, based on the morphology, circularity, and specific surface area. Once the stable particles were generated by aggregation of the primary nucleus particles, they grew in size by absorbing oligomeric species without generating substantial pores. The investigation was carried out characterizing the particles in the polymerization time and in various concentrations of the polymerization ingredients. Particle size continuously grew, but the uniformity and circularity of the microspheres were reduced with polymerization time because of the higher reactivity of divinylbenzene. The measured specific surface areas of the microspheres all were less than 10 m2/g, which showed good agreement with calculated values under an assumption of no pores on the surface of the microspheres. Thus, the specific surface area of the microspheres supported the proposed mechanism. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 42: 3967–3974, 2004  相似文献

Styrene has been grafted from crosslinked poly(divinylbenzene) core microspheres by both reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and conventional free radical polymerization. The core microspheres were prepared by precipitation polymerization. Crosslinked poly(DVB) core microspheres containing double bonds on the particle surface can be used directly to graft polymers from the surface by RAFT without prior modification of the core microspheres. The RAFT agent 1‐phenylethyl dithiobenzoate (PEDB) was used: Particle sizes increased from 2 μm up to 3.06 μm, and the particle weight increased by up to 6.5%. PEDB controls the particle weight gain, the particle volume, and the molecular weight of the soluble polymer. PEDB was also used to synthesize core poly(DVB) RAFT microspheres that contain residual RAFT end groups on the surface and within the particle. Styrene was subsequently grafted from the surface of these core poly(DVB) RAFT microspheres. The generated microspheres were characterized by 1H‐NMR spectroscopy, focused ion beam (FIB) milling, Coulter particle sizing, and size exclusion chromatography. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We demonstrate a facile, yet efficient method for the functionalization of crosslinked polystyrene (PS) microspheres with biocompatible poly(vinylphosphonate)s via the combination of a UV grafting polymerization and a surface‐initiated group transfer polymerization. Self‐initiated photografting and photopolymerization of ethylene glycol dimethacrylate results in direct photografting of poly(ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) on the PS microspheres with dangling methacrylate functionalities, which are used to immobilize ytterbocene complexes to form the surface‐bound rare‐earth metal catalyst system. The surface‐initiated GTP of dialkyl vinylphosphonates from the initiator system leads to the functionalization of PS microspheres with poly(vinylphosphonate) brushes. Polymerization kinetic investigation indicates that surface‐initiated GTP leads to a constant and remarkably rapid weight gain of the microsphere (a microsphere weight increase of 600% within 3 min), owing to the highly living and efficient character of GTP. The surface‐initiated GTP occurring inside the microsphere causes an accumulation of the tension between the polymer chains in the microsphere, which eventually induces fracture of the microsphere for longer polymerization time. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis of new polymer colloids based on renewable resources, such as sugar‐derived monomers, is nowadays a matter of interest. These new polymeric particles should be useful in biomedical applications, such as drug delivery, because of their assumed biodegradability. In this work, two new families of polymer latex particles, based on a sugar‐derived monomer, 3‐O‐methacryloyl‐1,2:5,6‐di‐O‐isopropylidene‐α‐D ‐glucofuranose (3‐MDG), were produced and characterized. The syntheses of poly(3‐MDG) crosslinked particles and those obtained by copolymerization with methacrylic acid (MAA), poly(3‐MDG‐co‐MAA) crosslinked particles, were prepared by surfactant‐free emulsion polymerization in a batch reactor. The average particle diameter evolutions, the effect of pH of the dispersion medium on the final average diameters, together with the microscopic and morphological analysis of the particle's surface and inner dominium, were analyzed. Poly(3‐MDG‐co‐EGDMA) stable particles were obtained by adding low amounts of initiator. The surface‐charge density of these particles corresponded to the sulfate groups coming from the initiator. In the second family of latices, poly(3‐MDG‐co‐MAA‐co‐EGDMA) particles, DCP measurements and SEM and TEM observations showed that the sizes and surface characteristics depended on the amounts of MAA and crosslinker used in the reaction mixture. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Photoinitiated dispersion polymerization of methyl methacrylate was carried out in a mixture of ethanol and water as dispersion medium in the presence of poly(N‐vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) as the steric stabilizer and Darocur 1173 as photoinitiator. 93.7% of conversion was achieved within 30 min of UV irradiation at room temperature, and microspheres with 0.94 μm number–average diameter and 1.04 polydispersity index (PDI) were obtained. X‐ray photoelectron spectroscope (XPS) analysis revealed that only parts of surface of the microspheres were covered by PVP. The particle size decreased from 2.34 to 0.98 μm as the concentration of PVP stabilizer increased from 2 to 15%. Extra stabilizer (higher than 15%) has no effect on the particle size and distribution. Increasing medium polarity or decreasing monomer and photoinitiator concentration resulted in a decrease in the particle size. Solvency of reaction medium toward stabilizer, which affects the adsorption of stabilizer on the particle surface, was shown to be crucial for controlling particle size and uniformity because of the high reaction rate in photoinitiated dispersion polymerization. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The difference between the polymer matrices of poly(2‐ethyl‐2‐oxazoline) (POZ) and poly(N‐vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) does not have a significant effect on the facilitated propylene transport and propylene solubility in 1:1 polymer/silver salt complex membranes, according to our previous work. In this article, its origin is investigated in terms of both microstructures of silver polymer electrolytes and the coordinative interaction of silver ion with polymer and with the counteranion. Initially different microstructures of POZ and PVP become similar to each other upon dissolving a large amount of silver salt, as evidenced by propane transport properties, specific volume, and Bragg d‐spacing. The dissolution of the silver salt in the polymer solvent strongly depends on the coordinative interaction between silver ion and carbonyl oxygen of POZ and PVP. Thus, the structural similarity upon dissolving silver salts in POZ and PVP is primarily determined by the coordinative interaction between silver ion and carbonyl oxygen, which was confirmed by theoretical structure calculation based on density functional theory and by IR and Raman spectroscopy. Therefore, facilitated olefin transport for silver polymer electrolyte membranes does not strongly depend on the polymeric matrix at high silver concentrations. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The hollow composite spheres with a raspberry‐like structure were prepared by a self‐assemble heterocoagulation based on the inter‐particle hydrogen‐bonding interaction between the amide groups of hollow poly (N,N′‐methylenebisacrylamide‐coN‐isopropyl acrylamide) (P(MBA‐co‐NIPAAm)) microspheres and the carboxylic acid groups of poly(ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate‐co‐methacrylic acid) (P(EGDMA‐co‐MAA)) nanoparticles, in which P(EGDMA‐co‐MAA) nanoparticle acted as the corona and the hollow P(MBA‐co‐NIPAAm) microsphere behaved as the core. The control coverage of the corona particles on the surface of hollow core microspheres of P(MBA‐co‐NIPAAm)/P(EGDMA‐co‐MAA) hollow composite sphere was studied in detail through adjustment of the mass ratio between the core and corona particles. The effect of the pH on the stability of the raspberry‐like hollow spheres was investigated. The polymer particles and the resultant heterocoagulated raspberry‐like hollow spheres were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Fully crosslinked, stable poly(styrene‐co‐divinylbenzene) microspheres, which are composed of various concentrations of divilylbenzene from 5 to 75 mol % based on styrene monomer, were prepared without a significant particle coagulation by the precipitation polymerization. The number‐average particle diameter ranged from 3.5 to 2.8 μm and decreased with an increasing concentration of divinylbenzene in monomer. In addition, the coefficient of variation of the microspheres was slightly reduced with the increasing concentration of divinylbenzene. The circularity and the measured specific surface area indicated that lesser particles are coagulated because of the improved stability of individual particles at a high divinylbenzene concentration and that the resulting particles have a smooth surface without micropores. The glass‐transition temperature was not observed for all microspheres formed from the range of divinylbenzene concentrations. In addition, the onset of the thermal‐degradation temperature was increased from 339.8 to 376.9 °C upon higher contents of divinylbenzene. On the basis of the DSC and thermogravimetric data, the polymer microspheres prepared by the precipitation polymerization possessed a fully crosslinked structure and highly enhanced thermal stability. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Regioregular poly(3‐hexyl thiophene) (rr‐P3HT)‐based star polymers were synthesized by a crosslinking reaction of the linear rr‐P3HT macroinitiator and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) crosslinker through Ru‐based atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), where the rr‐P3HT macroinitiator was prepared by Grignard metathesis method (GRIM) followed by end functionalization of the ATRP initiator with chlorophenylacetate (CPA) to the rr‐P3HT. Relatively high molecular weight of the star polymers were obtained (Mp = 8,988,000 g/mol), which consisted of large numbers of the rr‐P3HT arm chains radiating from the EGDMA‐based microgel core. The yield of the star polymers were strongly affected by the added amount of the EGDMA crosslinker. The crystalline structure of the rr‐P3HT by intermolecular π‐π stacking interaction gradually decreased as the star polymer formed, which was confirmed by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and electro‐optical analyses. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This article describes for the first time the development of a new polymerization technique by introducing iniferter‐induced “living” radical polymerization mechanism into precipitation polymerization and its application in the molecular imprinting field. The resulting iniferter‐induced “living” radical precipitation polymerization (ILRPP) has proven to be an effective approach for generating not only narrow disperse poly(ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) microspheres but also molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) microspheres with obvious molecular imprinting effects towards the template (a herbicide 2,4‐dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4‐D)), rather fast template rebinding kinetics, and appreciable selectivity over structurally related compounds. The binding association constant Ka and apparent maximum number Nmax for the high‐affinity sites of the 2,4‐D imprinted polymer were determined by Scatchard analysis and found to be 1.18 × 104 M?1 and 4.37 μmol/g, respectively. In addition, the general applicability of ILRPP in molecular imprinting was also confirmed by the successful preparation of MIP microspheres with another template (2‐chloromandelic acid). In particular, the living nature of ILRPP makes it highly useful for the facile one‐pot synthesis of functional polymer/MIP microspheres with surface‐bound iniferter groups, which allows their direct controlled surface modification via surface‐initiated iniferter polymerization and is thus of great potential in preparing advanced polymer/MIP materials. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Monodisperse, crosslinked poly(divinylbenzene) and poly(methacrylic acid‐co‐ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) microspheres with (1R,2R)‐N1‐toluenesulfonyl‐1,2‐diphenylethylene‐1,2‐diamine ((R,R)‐TsDPEN) moiety were successfully prepared by precipitation polymerization. Introduction site of the (R,R)‐TsDPEN moiety into the polymer microspheres could be controlled by changing the order of addition of the corresponding monomers. The functionalized polymer microspheres were applied to asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of ketone and imine. Polymer microsphere‐supported chiral catalysts showed good reactivity and enantioselectivity in the catalytic asymmetric transfer hydrogenations. Chiral secondary alcohol was quantitatively obtained with 94% ee in the asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of acetophenone in water. We also found that introduction site of the chiral catalyst and hydrophobicity of the microspheres, as well as degree of the crosslinking, affected the yield and enantioselectivity of chiral product in this reaction. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polymer microspheres are obtained by the dropwise addition of a precipitant, containing a polymeric stabilizer, into a polymer solution, containing a polymeric stabilizer. The polymer and stabilizer concentrations, the stirring speed, and the precipitation temperature determine the size and size uniformity of the microspheres. Seven polymer microspheres of polyimide, poly(ether imide), poly(ether ketone), poly(phenylene oxide), polysulfone, poly(vinylidene fluoride), and cellulose diacetate have been prepared with dimethylacetamide as the solvent, with water as the precipitant, and with poly(vinyl alcohol) as the stabilizer. The size and size uniformity of the obtained microspheres are d = 2.3–25.7 μm and ? = 0.15–0.50, respectively (? = σ/d, where ? is the dispersion coefficient, d is the average diameter, and σ is the standard deviation of the diameter). © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Nonstoichiometric interpolyelectrolyte complexes (IPECs) as colloidal dispersions have been widely used for the past decade as reactive materials for flocculation and surface modification. In this context, some new aspects of the preparation and properties of IPEC nanoparticles based on NaPAMPS, in salt‐free aqueous solutions, are reported in this article. IPEC dispersions with different characteristics, z‐averaged particle sizes, polydispersity indices, and colloidal stabilities were tailored by the addition rate of the titrant, a less investigated factor in the synthesis of IPECs as nanoparticles. Poly(sodium 2‐acrylamido‐2‐methylpropanesulfonate) (NaPAMPS) and two polycations bearing positive charges in the backbone, poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) and a polycation containing 95 mol % N,N‐dimethyl‐2‐hydroxypropyleneammonium chloride units, were used for this purpose. The complex nanoparticle characteristics and storage stability were monitored via the optical density at 500 nm and dynamic light scattering. IPEC nanoparticles with z‐averaged particle sizes of 100–250 nm resulted from the same polyion pair and the same polyion concentrations when the addition rate of the titrant, either the polyanion or polycation, varied within the range of 0.1–1.5 mL/mL of the starting polyion × h. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Nonspecific interaction is a key parameter affecting the efficiency of proteins, nucleic acids or cell separation. Currently, many approaches to introduce antifouling properties to materials have been developed. Among these, surface modification with polymer brushes plays a prominent role. The aim of this study was to synthesize new magnetic microspheres grafted with poly(N,N‐dimethylacrylamide) (PDMA) that resist nonspecific protein adsorption. Monodisperse macroporous poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) microspheres, 4 μm in size, were synthesized by a multiple swelling polymerization method. To render the microspheres magnetic, iron oxide was precipitated inside the microsphere pores. Functional carboxyl groups, introduced by the hydrolysis of the 2‐(methacryloyl)oxyethyl acetate (HEMA‐Ac) comonomer, were used to react with propargylamine, followed by coupling of a chain transfer agent via an azide‐alkyne click reaction. PDMA was grafted from the PHEMA microspheres using reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (RAFT), resulting in surfaces with more than 81 wt % PDMA attached. The successful modification of the microspheres was confirmed by XPS. The magnetic microspheres grafted with PDMA showed excellent antifouling properties as tested in bovine serum protein solutions. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. A new type of guest has been designed and synthesized for the exo‐type supramolecular functionalization of adamantyl‐urea‐terminated poly(propylene imine) dendrimers. This new type of guest motif features a uriedo methane sulfonic acid moiety that binds very selectively to the surfaces of dendrimers via a combination of noncovalent interactions forming well‐defined complexes. The guest–host properties have been examined for a fifth‐generation adamantyl‐urea‐functionalized poly(propylene imine) dendrimer capable of binding 32 guest molecules and for a model host molecule that can bind only one guest molecule. The guest–host chemistry has been studied with 1H NMR spectroscopy, nuclear Overhauser enhancement spectroscopy NMR spectroscopy, T1‐relaxation NMR experiments, and IR spectroscopy. The 1:32 ratio with the dendrimer has been confirmed unambiguously from 1H NMR spectra of the complex after size exclusion chromatography. Competition experiments with guests bearing a carboxylic acid instead of a sulfonic acid in the binding motif have demonstrated that the sulfonic acid has superior binding strength. Also, the importance of a combination of noncovalent interactions has been shown via competition experiments with a guest lacking the uriedo moiety. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A miscible blend of poly(methyl methacrylate) and poly(styrene‐co‐acrylonitrile) and an immiscible blend of poly(methyl methacrylate) and polyacrylonitrile were metallized by nickel, and their surfaces were analyzed by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Before metallization, the heteroatom distribution at the polymer surface was very different in the miscible and immiscible blends. However, this distribution was modified during metallization, which was only possible via polymer‐bond breaking, leading to similar compositions at the two interfaces. Oxygen exhibited a better affinity with nickel than nitrogen, but nickel oxide and nickel nitride were both formed at the interface. Nickel nitride prevented the metal from diffusing into the substrate, playing the role of a barrier, thus driving the oxygen to the metal layer. Amorphous carbon was also detected at the interface as a new carbon species, but it did not have any significant influence on the changes induced in the distribution of heteroatoms at the polymer surfaces. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polymeric microspheres were prepared from a Merrifield resin via nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization. Polystyrene, poly(acetoxystyrene), and poly[styrene‐b‐(methyl methacrylate‐co‐styrene)], poly(acetoxystyrene‐b‐styrene), and poly(styrene‐co‐2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate) copolymers were demonstrated to graft onto 2,2,6,6‐tetramethyl‐1‐piperidinyloxy nitroxide bound Merrifield resins. The polymerization control was enhanced both on the surface and in solution by the addition of sacrificial nitroxide. The significant increase in the particle diameter (more than a fivefold volume increase for polystyrene brushes) showed that polymer growth was not only on the surface but also within the particles, and this diameter increase could be adjusted through changes in the molecular weight of the polymers. The microspheres were characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, particle size analysis, and optical microscopy. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
