We report here the successful functionalization of single‐walled carbon nanotubes with bioinspired sugar and phosphocholine polymeric structures via surface‐initiated atom transfer radical polymerization. The surface‐polymer‐coated carbon nanotubes have been systematically analyzed by Raman, infrared, ultraviolet–visible, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and high‐resolution transmission electron microscopy, which give strong evidence of successful functionalization. The successful aqueous dispersion of the functionalized carbon nanotubes also indicates that functionalization has been achieved. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Heterotelechelic polystyrene (PS), poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) (PtBA), and poly (methyl acrylate) (PMA), containing both azide and triisopropylsilyl (TIPS) protected acetylene end groups, were prepared in good control (Mw/Mn ≤ 1.24) by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The end groups were independently applied in two successive “click” reactions, that is: first the azide termini were functionalized and, after deprotection, the acetylene moieties were utilized for a second conjugation step. As a proof of concept, PS was consecutively functionalized with propargyl alcohol and azidoacetic acid, as confirmed by MALDI‐ToF MS. In addition, the same methodology was employed to modularly build up an ABC type triblock terpolymer. Size exclusion chromatography measurements demonstrated first coupling of PtBA to PS and, after the deprotection of the acetylene functionality on PS, connection of PMA, yielding a PMA‐b‐PS‐b‐PtBA triblock terpolymer. The reactions were driven to completion using a slight excess of azide functionalized polymers. Reduction of the residual azide groups into amines allowed easy removal of this excess of polymer by column chromatography. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. New supported catalytic systems based on the immobilization of a ligand onto supported (co)polymers were prepared, allowing copper immobilization onto a solid support during the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA). These supported catalysts were elaborated by the ATRP of 2‐vinyl‐4,4‐dimethyl‐5‐oxazolone and/or styrene onto a Wang resin initiator. Two different approaches were used, involving well‐defined architectures synthesized by ATRP. First, a supported electrophilic homopolymer [Wang‐g‐poly(2‐vinyl‐4,4‐dimethyl‐5‐oxazolone)] was synthesized to obtain an azlactone ring at each repetitive unit, and a supported statistical copolymer [Wang‐g‐poly(2‐vinyl‐4,4‐dimethyl‐5‐oxazolone‐stat‐styrene)] was synthesized to introduce a distance between the azlactone rings. The azlactone‐based (co)polymers were then modified by a reaction with N,N,N′,N′‐tetraethyldiethylenetriamine (TEDETA) to create supported complexing sites for copper bromide. The ATRP of MMA was studied with these supported ligands, and a first‐order kinetic plot was obtained, but high polydispersity indices of the obtained poly(methyl methacrylate) were observed (polydispersity index > 2). On the other hand, the supported ATRP of styrene was performed, followed by the nucleophilic substitution of bromine by TEDETA (Wang‐g‐polystyrene–N,N,N′,N′‐tetraethyldiethylenetriamine) at the chain end of the grafted polystyrene chains. This strategy led the ligand away from the core bead, depending on the length of the polystyrene block (number‐average molecular weight determined by size exclusion chromatography = 1100–2250 g/mol). These supported complexes mediated a controlled polymerization of MMA, yielding polymers with controlled molar masses and low polydispersity indices. Moreover, after the polymerization, 96% of the initial copper was kept in the beads. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 44: 5316–5328, 2006 相似文献

A series of new functional poly(ethylene‐co‐vinyl alcohol)‐g‐polystyrene graft copolymers (EVAL‐g‐PS) with controlled molecular weight (Mn = 38,000–94,000 g mol?1) and molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn = 2.31–3.49) were synthesized via a grafting from methodology. The molecular structure and component of EVAL‐g‐PS graft copolymers were confirmed by the analysis of their 1H NMR spectra and GPC curves. The porous films of such copolymers were fabricated via a static breath‐figure (BF) process. The influencing factors on the morphology of such porous films, such as solvent, temperature, polymer concentration, and molecular weight of polymer were investigated. Ordered porous film and better regularity was fabricated through a static BF process using EVAL‐g‐PS solution in CHCl3. Scanning electron microscopy observation reveals that the EVAL‐g‐PS graft copolymer is an efficient compatibilizer for the blend system of low‐density polyethylene/polystyrene. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Well‐defined azobenzene‐containing side‐chain liquid crystalline diblock copolymers composed of poly[6‐(4‐methoxy‐azobenzene‐4′‐oxy) hexyl methacrylate] (PMMAZO) and poly(γ‐benzyl‐L ‐glutamate) (PBLG) were synthesized by click reaction from alkyne‐ and azide‐functionalized homopolymers. The alkyne‐terminated PMMAZO homopolymers were synthesized by copper‐mediated atom transfer radical polymerization with a bromine‐containing alkyne bifunctional initiator, and the azido‐terminated PBLG homopolymers were synthesized by ring‐opening polymerization of γ‐benzyl‐L ‐glutamate‐N‐carboxyanhydride in DMF at room temperature using an amine‐containing azide initiator. The thermotropic phase behavior of PMMAZO‐b‐PBLG diblock copolymers in bulk were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry and polarized light microscopy. The PMMAZO‐b‐PBLG diblock copolymers exhibited a smectic phase and a nematic phase when the weight fraction of PMMAZO block was more than 50%. Photoisomerization behavior of PMMAZO‐b‐PBLG diblock copolymers and the corresponding PMMAZO homopolymers in solid film and in solution were investigated using UV–vis. In solution, trans–cis isomerization of diblock copolymers was slower than that of the corresponding PMMAZO homopolymers. These results may provide guidelines for the design of effective photoresponsive anisotropic materials. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2013 相似文献

Graft copolymers of ethyl cellulose with azobenzene‐containing polymethacrylates were synthesized through atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The residual hydroxyl groups on ethyl cellulose were first esterified with 2‐bromoisobutyryl bromide to yield 2‐bromoisobutyryloxy groups, which was then used to initiate the polymerization of 6‐[4‐(4‐methoxyphenylazo)phenoxy]hexyl methacrylate (MMAzo) in the presence of CuBr/N,N,N′,N″,N″‐pentamethylenetriamine (PMDETA) as catalyst and anisole as solvent. The graft copolymers were characterized by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and 1H‐NMR. The molecular weights of the graft copolymers increased relatively to the macroinitiator, and the polydispersities were narrow. The thermal and liquid crystalline property of the graft copolymers were investigated by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and polarizing optical microscope (POM). Photoresponsive property was studied under the irradiation of UV–vis light in THF solution. The graft copolymers have potential applications, including sensors and optical materials. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 45: 1653–1660, 2007 相似文献

Poly(methyl methacrylate)s (PMMAs) of two different molecular weights having a single photochromic benzospiropyran (BSP) end‐group were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Polymer characterization by 1H NMR and matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionitiation time of flight‐mass spectroscopy confirms that using an ATRP initiator equipped with BSP, a near quantitative functionalization of the PMMA with the BSP was achieved. Both polymers exhibit photochroism characterized by the UV‐induced transition from BSP to benzomerocyanine (BMC) in acetonitrile. However, a strong molecular weight dependence of the thermal relaxation kinetic of the BMC was found with a significantly faster temperature‐dependent transition for the higher molecular weight polymer. Thermodynamic analysis of the process revealed a higher gain in the entropy of activation ΔS± for the transition process in the higher molecular weight polymer. This suggests an energetically unfavorable nonpolar environment of the BMC group in the higher molecular weight polymers, although a higher solvation of the BMC in the lower molecular weight polymer contributes to its stabilization. The ability of the BMC polymer end‐groups to organize was shown in metal ion‐binding experiments forming bivalently linked complexes with Co ions. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of novel comb polymers, poly{2,5‐bis[(4‐methoxyphenyl)oxycarbonyl]styrene}‐g‐polystyrene (PMPCS‐g‐PS), with mesogen‐jacketed rigid side chains were synthesized by the “grafting onto” method from α‐yne‐terminated PMPCS (side chain) and poly(vinylbenzyl azide) (backbone) by Cu(I)‐catalyzed 1,3‐dipolar cycloaddition click reaction. The α‐yne‐terminated PMPCS was synthesized by Cu(I)‐catalyzed atom transfer radical polymerization initiated by a yne‐functional initiator. Poly(vinylbenzyl azide) was prepared by polymerizing vinylbenzyl chloride using nitroxide mediated radical polymerization to obtain poly(vinylbenzyl chloride) as the precursor which was then converted to the azide derivative. The chemical structure and architectures of PMPCS comb polymers were confirmed by 1H NMR, gel permeation chromatography, and multiangle laser light scattering. Both surface morphologies and solution behaviors were investigated. Surface morphologies of PMPCS combs on different surfaces were investigated by scanning probe microscopy. PMPCS combs showed different aggregation morphologies when depositing on silicon wafers with/without chemical modification. The PMPCS comb polymers transferred to polymer‐modified silicon wafers using the Langmuir‐Blodgett technique showed a worm‐like chain conformation. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The first example of well‐controlled atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of a permanently charged anionic acrylamide monomer is reported. ATRP of sodium 2‐acrylamido‐2‐methylpropanesulfonate (NaAMPS) was achieved with ethyl 2‐chloropropionate (ECP) as an initiator and the CuCl/CuCl2/tris(2‐dimethylaminoethyl)amine (Me6TREN) catalytic system. The polymerizations were carried out in 50:50 (v/v) N,N‐dimethylformamide (DMF)/water mixtures at 20 °C. Linear first‐order kinetic plots up to a 92% conversion for a target degree of polymerization of 50 were obtained with [ECP]/[CuCl]/[CuCl2]/[Me6TREN] = 1:1:1:2 and [AMPS] = 1 M. The molecular weight increased linearly with the conversion in good agreement with the theoretical values, and the polydispersities decreased with increasing conversion, reaching a lower limit of 1.11. The living character of the polymerization was confirmed by chain‐extension experiments. Block copolymers with N,N‐dimethylacrylamide and N‐isopropylacrylamide were also prepared. The use of a DMF/water mixed solvent should make possible the synthesis of new amphiphilic ionic block copolymers without the use of protecting group chemistry. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Diblock copolymers with polymethyl methacrylate and side chain liquid crystalline (LC) azopolymethacrylate blocks were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The azobenzene content in these copolymers ranges from 52 to 7 wt %. For an azo content down to 20% they exhibit a LC behavior similar to that of the azo homopolymers. Thin films of these copolymers were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). A lamellar nanostructure was observed for azo content down to 20 wt %, while no structure is observed for the copolymer with a 7% azo content. The optical anisotropy induced in these films by illumination with linearly polarized 488 nm light was studied and the results compared with those of the azo homopolymer and of a random copolymer with a similar composition. The formation of azo aggregates inside the azo blocks is strongly reduced in going from the homopolymer to the copolymers. Photoinduced azo orientation perpendicular to the 488 nm light polarization was found in all the polymers. The orientational order parameter is very similar in the homopolymer and in the block copolymers with an azo content down to 20 wt %, while it is much lower in the random copolymer and in the 7 wt %. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Summary: Based on a hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide) macroinitiator (PEOBr), a novel amphiphilic diblock copolymer PEO‐block‐poly(11‐(4‐cyanobiphenyloxy)undecyl) methacrylate) (PEO‐b‐PMA(11CB)) was prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) using CuCl/1,1,4,7,10,10‐hexamethyltriethylenetriamine as a catalyst system. An azobenzene block of poly(11‐[4‐(4‐butylphenylazo)phenoxyl]undecyl methacrylate) was then introduced into the copolymer sequence by a second ATRP to synthesize the corresponding triblock copolymer PEO‐b‐PMA(11CB)‐b‐PMA(11Az). Both of the amphiphilic block copolymers had well‐defined structures and narrow molecular‐weight distributions, and exhibited a smectic liquid‐crystalline phase over a wide temperature range.

Photoactive N‐alkoxy 4‐phenyl pyridinium and N‐alkoxy isoquinolinium ion terminated polystyrenes with hexafluoroantimonate counter anion were prepared and characterized. For this purpose, mono‐ and dibrominated polystyrenes were prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The reaction of these polymers with silver hexafluoroantimonate in the presence of 4‐phenylpyridine N‐oxide and isoquinoline N‐oxide in dichloromethane produced desired polymeric salts with the corresponding functionalities. Irradiation of these photoactive polystyrenes produced alkoxy radicals at chain ends capable of initiating free radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA). This way, depending on the number of functionality, AB or ABA type block copolymers were formed which were characterized with the aid of gel permeation chromatography and 1H NMR spectroscopy. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel, fluorinated copolymers with different architectures bearing sulfopropyl groups were synthesized in a three‐step procedure. The first step involved atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of aromatic fluorinated monomers followed by two modification reactions performed on the polymer chain: demethylation and sulfopropylation. As a result two types of fluorinated copolymers were obtained. The first one was synthesized by ATRP of 2,3,5,6‐tetrafluoro‐4‐methoxystyrene (TFMS). After the modification steps copolymers with randomly distributed sulfopropyl groups along the backbone were obtained. The second type of copolymers has diblock architecture with one of the blocks being sulfopropylated. They were synthesized via ATRP of 2,3,4,5,6‐pentafluorostyrene (FS) initiated by a PTFMS‐macroinitiator followed by demethylation and sulfopropylation of the TFMS‐block. The copolymers were characterized by size‐exclusion chromatography, FTIR, and 1H NMR spectroscopy. Their thermal properties were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and thermal gravimetric analyses. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Peroxybromination or so‐called radical bromination is an environmentally friendly process which involves the use of in situ generated bromine by action of hydrogen peroxide on sodium or ammonium bromide in acid medium. The reaction takes place at room temperature without eliminating hydrobromic acid and no needs the use of elemental bromine. The reaction with poly(vinyl methyl ketone) in biphasic system was demonstrated to result in quantitative bromination exclusively at the methyne carbon of the polymer. The brominated polymer was successfully used as multifunctional macroinitiator for atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of styrene and MMA to give bottlebrush polymers, as evidenced by 1H NMR and GPC. This strategy was demonstrated to provide a means of easy bromination of solid polystyrene microspheres (210–420 μm) constituting with vinyl methyl ketone copolymer segments. Bromoalkyl groups generated (1.3 mmol g?1) in aqueous mixture were used for surface initiated ATRP of glycidyl methacrylate and styrene monomers to give dense graft chains tethered to the surfaces with hydrolysis‐proof linkages. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This article presents a new strategy for synthesizing a series of well‐defined macromonomers. Bromine‐terminated polystyrene and poly(t‐butyl acrylate) with predetermined molecular weights and narrow distributions were prepared through the atom transfer radical polymerization of styrene and t‐butyl acrylate initiated with ethyl 2‐bromoisobutyrate. Then, azido‐terminated polymers were obtained through the bromine substitution reaction with sodium azide. Catalyzed by CuBr/N,N,N′,N″,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine, the azido end group reacted with propargyl methacrylate via a 1,3‐dipolar cycloaddition reaction, and ω‐methacryloyl‐functionalized macromonomers were thus obtained. The end‐group transformation yields were rather high, as characterized by matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectra and 1H NMR analysis. By this effective and facile approach, some novel macromonomers that otherwise are difficult to achieve, such as poly(ethylene oxide)‐block‐polystyrene, were easily prepared. Radical homopolymerizations of these macromonomers were performed, and a series of comb polymers were prepared. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 44: 6103–6113, 2006 相似文献

A series of mesogen‐jacketed liquid crystalline polymers, poly{2,2,3,3,4,4,4‐heptafluorobutyl 4′‐hydroxy‐2‐vinylbiphenyl‐4‐carboxylate} (PF3Cm, where m is the number of carbon atoms in the alkoxy groups, and m = 1, 4, 6, and 8), the side chain of which contains a biphenyl core with a fluorocarbon substituent at one end and an alkoxy unit of varying length on the other end, were designed and successfully synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization. For comparison, poly{butyl 4′‐hydroxy‐2‐vinylbiphenyl‐4‐carboxylate} (PC4Cm), similar to PF3Cm but with a butyl group instead of the fluorocarbon substituent, was also prepared. Differential scanning calorimetric results reveal that the glass transition temperatures (Tgs) of the two series of polymers decrease as m increases and Tgs of the fluorocarbon‐substituted polymers are higher than those of the corresponding butyl‐substituted polymers. Wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction measurements show that the mesophase structures of these polymers are dependent on the number of the carbon atoms in the fluorocarbon substituent and the property of the other terminal substituent. Polymers with fluorocarbon substituents enter into columnar nematic phases when m ≥ 4, whereas the polymer PF3C1 exhibits no liquid crystallinity. For polymers with butyl substituents, columnar nematic phases form when the number of carbon atoms at both ends of the side chain is not equal at high temperatures and disappear after the polymers are cooled to ambient temperature. However, when the polymer has the same number of carbon atoms at both ends of the side chain, a hexagonal columnar phase develops, and this phase remains after the polymer is cooled. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This article reports the synthesis of the block and graft copolymers using peroxygen‐containing poly(methyl methacrylate) (poly‐MMA) as a macroinitiator that was prepared from the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in the presence of bis(4,4′‐bromomethyl benzoyl peroxide) (BBP). The effects of reaction temperatures on the ATRP system were studied in detail. Kinetic studies were carried out to investigate controlled ATRP for BBP/CuBr/bpy initiating system with MMA at 40 °C and free radical polymerization of styrene (S) at 80 °C. The plots of ln ([Mo]/[Mt]) versus reaction time are linear, corresponding to first‐order kinetics. Poly‐MMA initiators were used in the bulk polymerization of S to obtain poly (MMA‐b‐S) block copolymers. Poly‐MMA initiators containing undecomposed peroygen groups were used for the graft copolymerization of polybutadiene (PBd) and natural rubber (RSS‐3) to obtain crosslinked poly (MMA‐g‐PBd) and poly(MMA‐g‐RSS‐3) graft copolymers. Swelling ratio values (qv) of the graft copolymers in CHCl3 were calculated. The characterizations of the polymers were achieved by Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), 1H‐nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), gel‐permeation chromatography (GPC), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and the fractional precipitation (γ) techniques. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report on the synthesis of well‐defined amphiphilic copolymer brushes possessing alternating poly(methyl methacrylate) and poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) grafts, poly(PMMA‐alt‐PNIPAM), via a combination of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and click reaction (Scheme 1 ). Firstly, the alternating copolymerization of N‐[2‐(2‐bromoisobutyryloxy)ethyl]maleimide (BIBEMI) with 4‐vinylbenzyl azide (VBA) affords poly(BIBEMI‐alt‐VBA). Bearing bromine and azide moieties arranged in an alternating manner, multifunctional poly(BIBEMI‐alt‐VBA) is capable of initiating ATRP and participating in click reaction. The subsequent ATRP of methyl methacrylate (MMA) using poly(BIBEMI‐alt‐VBA) as the macroinitiator leads to poly(PMMA‐alt‐VBA) copolymer brush. Finally, amphiphilic poly(PMMA‐alt‐PNIPAM) copolymer brush bearing alternating PMMA and PNIPAM grafts is synthesized via the click reaction of poly(PMMA‐alt‐VBA) with an excess of alkynyl‐terminated PNIPAM (alkynyl‐PNIPAM). The click coupling efficiency of PNIPAM grafts is determined to be ~80%. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis of poly(PMMA‐alt‐PNIPAM) reveals two glass transition temperatures (Tg). In aqueous solution, poly(PMMA‐alt‐PNIPAM) supramolecularly self‐assembles into spherical micelles consisting of PMMA cores and thermoresponsive PNIPAM coronas, which were characterized via a combination of temperature‐dependent optical transmittance, micro‐differential scanning calorimetry (micro‐DSC), dynamic and static laser light scattering (LLS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
