Copolymerizations of n‐butyl methacrylate (BMA) and fluoro‐methacrylates (including 2,2,3,4,4,4‐hexafluorobutyl methacrylate, HFBMA and 2,2,2‐trifluoroethyl methacrylate, TFEMA) were carried out via reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer miniemulsion polymerization, using cumyl dithiobenzoate as a chain transfer agent. The experimental results show that the copolymerizations exhibit “living” fashion, with controlled molecular weights and narrow polydispersities. The reactivity ratios of BMA and fluoromethacrylate in this kind of polymerization system were investigated by size exclusion chromatography and nuclear magnetic resonance, from which the Q‐ and e‐values of HFBMA and TFEMA were calculated. Compared with its corresponding non‐fluoric methacrylate, fluorinated methacrylate exhibits higher resonance stability of the radical adducts. The Q‐value of fluorinated methacrylate is higher (QBMA = 0.82 to QHFBMA = 1.70 and QEMA = 0.76 to QTFEMA = 1.01), and e‐value is much larger (eBMA = 0.28 to eHFBMA = 1.24 to and eEMA = 0.17 to eTFEMA = 1.29) for its rather unique high electron‐withdrawing inductive effect of the fluoroalkyl ester group. The thermal property and the wetting property of copolymers were also discussed. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 45: 5067–5075, 2007  相似文献

Reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) miniemulsion polymerization of butyl methacrylate (BMA) and dodecafluoroheptyl methacrylate (DFMA) was carried out with 2‐cyanoprop‐2‐yl dithiobenzoate (CPDB) as chain transfer agent (CTA). Concentration effects of RAFT agent and initiator on kinetics and molecular weight were investigated. No obvious red oil layer (phase's separation) and coagulation was observed in the first stage of homopolymerization of BMA. The polymer molecular weights increased linearly with the monomer conversion with polydispersities lower than 1.2. At 75 °C, the monomer conversion could achieve above 96% in 3 h with [momomer]:[RAFT]:[KPS] = 620:4:1 (mole ratio). The results showed excellent controlled/living polymerization characteristics and a very fast polymerization rate. Furthermore, the synthesis of poly(BMA‐b‐DFMA) diblock copolymers with a regular structure (PDI < 1.30, PMMA calibration) was performed by adding the monomer of DFMA at the end of the RAFT miniemulsion polymerization of BMA. The success of diblock copolymerization was showed by the molecular weight curves shifting toward higher molar mass, recorded by gel permeation chromatography before and after block copolymerization. Compositions of block copolymers were further confirmed by 1H NMR, FTIR, and DSC analysis. The copolymers exhibited a phase‐separated morphology and possessed distinct glass transition temperatures associated with fluoropolymer PDFMA and PBMA domains. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The miniemulsion reverse atom transfer radical polymerization of butyl methacrylate was carried out with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as the sole surfactant. The polymerizations were initiated with 2,2′‐azobis[2‐(2‐imidazolin‐2‐yl)propane] dihydrochloride and mediated with copper(II) bromide/tris[2‐di(2‐ethylhexyl acrylate)aminoethyl]amine. The living character was demonstrated by the linear increase in the number‐average molecular weight with conversion and the decreasing polydispersity index with conversion. The polymerizations were conducted at 90 °C with 1 wt % CTAB with respect to the monomer and produced a coagulum‐free latex with a mean particle diameter of 155 nm. The resulting latexes exhibited good shelf‐life stability. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 44: 1628–1634, 2006  相似文献

Miniemulsions of methyl methacrylate with sodium lauryl sulfate as the surfactant and dodecyl mercaptan (DDM) as the cosurfactant (or hydrophobe) were prepared and polymerized. The emulsions were of a droplet size range common to miniemulsions and exhibited long-term stability (greater than 3 months). Results indicate that DDM retards Ostwald ripening and allows the production of stable miniemulsions. When these emulsions were initiated, particle formation occurred predominantly by monomer droplet nucleation. The effects of the concentration of surfactant, cosurfactant and initiator were determined. Rates of polymerization, monomer droplet sizes, polymer particle sizes, molecular weights of the polymer, and the effect of initiator concentration on the number of particles vary systematically in ways that indicate predominant droplet nucleation in these systems. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Surface graft polymerization of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) was carried out onto a high- density polyethylene (PE) sheet pretreated with corona to introduce peroxides onto the PE surface. Graft polymerization of GMA was effected by UV irradiation of the coronatreated PE in the presence of monomer solution without the use of any photosensitizer. The graft layer was found by staining the PE cross section to localize in the surface region of PE. The physical change in the PE surface was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, while the chemical changes due to the GMA graft polymerization were assessed by the dynamic contact angle, FT-IR, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurement. The peroxide formation by corona exposure was confirmed by the XPS measurement after derivatization with SO2. The epoxy groups introduced onto the PE surface by the GMA graft polymerization were reactive with water (in the presence of HCI) and amines. The adhesion between the GMA-grafted PE and an epoxy resin was studied by means of a shear strength test method. The GMA-grafted PE exhibited strong interfacial adhesion with the epoxy resin, compared to the original and corona-treated PE. The adhesion strength of the GMA-grafted PE was nearly two times higher than that of the corona-treated PE. This strongly suggests that the enhanced adhesion between the surface-grafted PE and the epoxy resin is ascribed to covalent bonding of the epoxy groups on the GMA-grafted surface to the amines in the epoxy resin. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

The ultrasonically initiated emulsion polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) was investigated. Experimental results show that sodium dodecyl sulfonate (SDS) surfactant plays a very important role in obtaining a high polymer yield, because in the absence of SDS, monomer conversion is near zero. Thus, the surfactant serves as an initiator and as interfacial modifier in this system (MMA/H2O), and the monomer conversion increases significantly with increasing SDS concentration. An increase in the reactor temperature also leads to an increase in the monomer conversion. An appropriate increase in the N2 purging rate also leads to higher conversion. The conversion of MMA decreases with increasing monomer concentration because of the higher viscosity of the system. With the experimental results, optimized reaction conditions were obtained. Accordingly, a high monomer conversion of about 67% and a high molecular weight of several millions can be obtained in a period of about 30 min. Furthermore, transmission electron micrographs show that the latex particles prepared are nanosized, indicating a promising technique for preparing nanoscale latex particles with a small amount of surfactant. In conclusion, a promising technique for ultrasonically initiated emulsion polymerization has been successfully performed. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Free-radical grafting of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) onto polypropylene (PP) films has been studied using supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) as a solvent and a swelling agent. As the reaction temperature was below the melting point, PP was modified in the solid phase. The PP film was first soaked with the monomer GMA and benzoyl peroxide (BPO) as an initiator using SC-CO2 at different experimental conditions of pressure, temperature, and thermal treatment time. After releasing CO2, film GMA molecules were grafted onto PP in different times. Using this method, the degree of grafting and the morphology could be controlled through the combination of pressure, temperature, and soaking time. FTIR spectra confirmed that GMA had been grafted onto PP and that polypropylene-graft-glycidyl methacrylate (PP-g-GMA) presented a high surface reactivity for conductive polyaniline anchoring. DSC measurements and TG analyses showed that the thermal profiles of the graft copolymer and virgin PP are quite similar and that the graft PP does not exhibit changes in terms of thermal degradation profile and melting temperature, respectively. X-ray data showed that a high degree of grafting leads to a lower degree of crystallinity of polypropylene.  相似文献

Hybrid silica/polystyrene nanoparticles were synthesized by miniemulsion polymerization. With the objective to prepare core‐shell hybrid nanoparticles having narrow particle size distributions (PSDs) as well as a high degree of silica encapsulation, the effect of adding surface modifiers, the size of silica nanoparticles, the ratio styrene/silica, the surfactant concentration, and the presence of ethanol in the reaction mixture were studied. A synergistic effect was observed using oleic acid (OA) together with 3‐(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate (TPM) in the compatibilization step between the organic phase (monomer) and inorganic nanoparticles (silica). Mono and multinuclear eccentric core‐shell hybrid nanoparticles were obtained. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 47: 935–948, 2009  相似文献

When a solution containing both styrene–butadiene block copolymer (SBS) and methyl methacrylate is treated with an initiator both homopolymerization of the methyl methacrylate and graft copolymerization of the methyl methacrylate onto the SBS occur. The amount of graft copolymerization depends upon the time and temperature of the reaction, the concentrations of all species, and the identity of the solvent and initiator. The combination of benzoyl peroxide in chloroform gives the highest graft yield and the reaction occurs by removal of an allylic hydrogen from the SBS by the initiator radical and subsequent addition of monomer units to that site; there is a significant solvent effect. Both AIBN and BPO function by the removal of an allylic hydrogen atom from SBS; BPO is able to effect this reaction relatively easily while AIBN can remove the hydrogen atom only with great difficulty and to a limited extent. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The grafting of the methyl methacrylate (MMA) monomer onto natural rubber (NR) was carried out by supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) swelling polymerization with benzoyl peroxide (BPO) as an initiator. Fourier transform–infrared spectroscopy (FT–IR) was used to confirm the formation of graft copolymers with the characteristic bands of symmetric C?O and C? O? C stretching vibrations at 1728 cm?1 and 1147 cm?1, respectively. The effects of the rubber‐to‐monomer ratio, amount of initiator, reaction time, and pressure on the monomer grafting level (GL) and grafting efficiency (GE) were investigated, and the optimum conditions for the preparation of NR‐g‐MMA were found to be 70:30 of the rubber‐to‐monomer ratio, 1.2% of the initiator content, and the reaction pressure of 23 MPa for 6 h. The thermal behavior of the NR and the different NR/MMA molar ratio grafted copolymer samples was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The observed glass transition temperature (Tg) was consistent with the GL. The tensile strength, modulus of elasticity, elongation at break, hardness, and oil resistance of graft copolymers were determined and compared with the values of NR and that of polymerization products prepared in traditional toluene solution. The results showed that the tensile strength, modulus of elasticity, hardness and oil resistance were greatly improved after modification in scCO2. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Compatibilization of blends of polybutadiene and poly(methyl methacrylate) with butadiene-methyl methacrylate diblock copolymers has been investigated by transmission electron microscopy. When the diblock copolymers are added to the blends, the size of PB particles decreases and their size distribution gets narrower. In PB/PMMA7.6K blends with P(B-b-MMA)25.2K as a compatibilizer, most of micelles exist in the PMMA phase. However, using P(B-b-MMA)38K as a compatibilizer, the micellar aggregation exists in PB particles besides that existing in the PMMA phase. The core of a micelle in the PMMA phase is about 10 nm. In this article the influences of temperature and homo-PMMA molecular weight on compatibilization were also examined. At a high temperature PB particles in blends tend to agglomerate into bigger particles. When the molecular weight of PMMA is close to that of the corresponding block of the copolymer, the best compatibilization result would be achieved. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The nanoencapsulation of hydrophobic compounds by miniemulsion polymerization, a convenient one‐step encapsulation technique for nanocapsules, was investigated in terms of the thermodynamics and kinetics. The encapsulation was achieved by polymerization inducing phase separation within minidroplets dispersed in an aqueous phase. Thermodynamic factors (the level and type of surfactant, the level of the hydrophilic comonomer, and the monomer/paraffin ratio), kinetic factors (the level of the crosslinking agent or chain‐transfer agent), and nucleation modes were all found to have a great influence on the latex morphology. Specifically, for a styrene/paraffin system, there were optimum levels of sodium dodecyl sulfate (1.0 wt %), the hydrophilic comonomer (1.0 wt % methyl acrylate acid), and the chain‐transfer agent (0.2 wt % n‐dodecanethiol) for obtaining well‐defined nanocapsules of paraffin with a styrene/paraffin ratio of 1:1. When the styrene/paraffin ratio was reduced, however, it was more difficult to achieve a fully encapsulated particle morphology. Homogeneous nucleation could compete with encapsulation, and this resulted in a pure polymer particle and a half‐moon morphology. Conditions were also found under which complete encapsulation could be observed with a water‐soluble initiator (potassium persulfate), contrary to certain reports. Replacing potassium persulfate with an oil‐soluble initiator (2,2‐azobisisobutyronitrile) had little influence on the morphology under those conditions. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Star‐shaped polybutadiene stars were synthesized by a convergent coupling of polybutadienyllithium with 4‐(chlorodimethylsilyl)styrene (CDMSS). CDMSS was added slowly and continuously to the living anionic chains until a stoichiometric equivalent was reached. Gel permeation chromatography‐multi‐angle laser light scattering (GPC‐MALLS) was used to determine the molecular weights and molecular weight distribution of the polybutadiene polymers. The number of arms incorporated into the star depended on the molecular weight of the initial chains and the rate of addition of the CDMSS. Low molecular weight polybutadiene arms (Mn = 640 g/mol) resulted in polybutadiene star polymers with an average of 12.6 arms, while higher molecular weight polybutadiene arms (Mn = 16,000 g/mol) resulted in polybutadiene star polymers with an average of 5.3 arms. The polybutadiene star polymers exhibited high 1,4‐polybutadiene microstructure (88.3–93.1%), and narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn = 1.11–1.20). Polybutadiene stars were subsequently hydrogenated by two methods, heterogeneous catalysis (catalytic hydrogenation using Pd/CaCO3) or reaction with p‐toluenesulfonhydrazide (TSH), to transform the polybutadiene stars into polyethylene stars. The hydrogenation of the polybutadiene stars was found to be close to quantitative by 1H NMR and FTIR spectroscopy. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A “surfactant-free” emulsion polymerization of methyl methacrylate was conducted at 80°C with ammonium persulfate initiator. The water-soluble MMA-based oligomers re-maining were isolated and analyzed both as-produced and after hydrolysis. NMR analysis revealed that the mole ratio of MMA repeat units to sulfate end groups in the former is 6.5. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry and gel permeation chromatography both showed that the mean number of MMA repeat units comprising the extracted material is 8–9. The hydrolysis procedure rids the oligomers of their terminal groups and converts some of the methyl ester groups to acid, greatly sim-plifying the mass spectrum. This appears to be the first direct measurement of “surfactants” produced in situ from monomer and persulfate initiator. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Gamma-radiation-induced graft copolymerization of methyl methacrylate onto natural lignocellulose (jute) fiber was carried out by the preirradiation method in an aqueous medium by using octylphenoxy-polyethoxyethanol as an emulsifier. The different factors that influenced the graft copolymer reaction process were investigated. In the case of radiation-dose-dependent grafting, samples irradiated in the presence of air produced up to 73% graft weight compared to 53% obtained in the case of irradiation in a nitrogen environment. By assuming Arrhenius reaction kinetics, the activation energy (E(a)) of the grafting reaction process was evaluated for different reaction temperatures. Moreover, the graft copolymer reaction was controlled by incorporating a homopolymer-inhibiting agent and three different chain-transfer agents in the reaction medium. The mechanical and thermal properties of jute fiber 'as received' and jute-graft-poly(methyl methacrylate) were also investigated. The results showed that the percentage of grafting with jute fiber has a significant effect on the properties. The kinetic parameters were evaluated from TGA thermograms by using Broido's method in the temperature range 240-350 degrees C. Scanning electron micrographs show that the structural changes on the surface of jute fibers were induced by graft copolymerization of methyl methacrylate monomer. Fiber-fiber surface friction was measured in terms of the average maximum load and the kinetic friction. SEM of jute-graft-poly(methyl methacrylate).  相似文献

Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of tert-butyl methacrylate (tBMA) was investigated using cuprous bromide with different ligands, solvents, deactivators, etc. The polymerization in bulk and diphenyl ether solvent system performed using Cu(I)Br complexed with NNN′, N″, N″-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA) catalyst in conjunction with 2-bromopropionitrile as an initiator at room temperature showed a curvature in the first-order kinetic plot. The controlled polymerization in methanol solution resulted in slower rate of polymerization and lower molecular weights. Well-defined diblock copolymers of PSt-b-PtBMA synthesized by polystyrene bromo macroinitiator (PSt-Br) with Cu(I)Cl/PMDETA catalyst system yielded predetermined molecular weights and lower polydispersities. Otherwise, the Cu(I)Br/PMDETA catalytic system showed an inefficient polymerization of tert-butyl methacrylate with lower molecular weights and higher polydispersities. Subsequent hydrolysis of the homopolymer refluxed in dioxane with addition of HCl afforded well-defined poly(methacrylic acid).  相似文献

In this article the synthesis and characterization of an elastomeric conducting material, obtained by grafting polyaniline (EB) on commercial cis‐1,4‐polybutadiene (PB), are described. PB was first partially epoxidized in chloroform solution using meta‐chloroperbenzoic acid (MCPBA). The conducting polymer was then grafted to the activated polybutadiene (EPB) via the aminolysis reaction between the polyaniline NH2 terminal groups and the oxirane rings. The material so obtained (EPBPAN) and the epoxidized intermediate product were characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, Fourier transform infrared, and ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy, thermal and mechanical analysis, and electrical conductivity measurements. The effect of the sample deformation on conductivity also was analyzed. The HCl doping of the EPBPAN film induced crosslinking reactions, generated by the acid cleavage of unreacted oxirane groups. The electrical conductivity of the doped material reached values of about 10?5 Ω?1 cm?1. The key characteristics of our elastomeric conducting material are its simple synthesis, its starting as a commercial product, and the solubility of its undoped form in a common low‐boiling organic solvent like chloroform. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The surface grafting onto ultrafine silica by the radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) initiated by peroxide groups introduced onto the surface was investigated. The introduction of peroxide groups onto the silica surface was achieved by the reaction of hydrogen peroxide with chlorosilyl groups, which were introduced by the treatment of silica with thionyl chloride. The content of diisopropylbenzene peroxide and tert-butyl peroxide groups introduced onto the silica according to the above method was determined to be 0.11 and 0.08 mmol/g, respectively. It was found that the polymerization of MMA is initiated by silica having these peroxide groups. In the polymerization, polyMMA was grafted onto silica surface: the percentage of grafting reached about 70%. Therefore, it was concluded that the polymerization of MMA is initiated by surface radicals formed by the decomposition of peroxide groups on silica and polyMMA is grafted through the propagation from the surface. During the polymerization, ungrafted polyMMA was also formed because of the formation of initiator fragments by the decomposition of peroxide groups: the grafting efficiency of the graft polymerization was 30–40%. PolyMMA-grafted silica produced a stable colloidal dispersion in organic solvents for polyMMA. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Ultrasonication was applied in combination with a hydrophobe for the copper‐mediated atom transfer radical polymerization of n‐butyl methacrylate in an aqueous dispersed system. A controlled polymerization was successfully achieved, as demonstrated by a linear correlation between the molecular weights and the monomer conversion. The polydispersities of the polymers were small (weight‐average molecular weight/number‐average molecular weight < 1.5). The influence of several factors, including ultrasonication, the amount of the surfactant, and the nature of the initiator, on the polymerization kinetics, molecular weight, and particle size was studied. The polymerization rate and molecular weights were independent of the number of particles and only depended on the atom transfer equilibrium. The final particle size, however, was a function of all the parameters. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 38: 4724–4734, 2000  相似文献
