The excitation and propagation of the guided waves in a stratified half-space and a Rayleigh wave exploration method in shallow engineering seismic exploration are studied in this paper. All the modes of the guided waves are calculated by the bisection method in the case where the low velocity layers are contained in a stratified half-space. Cases when the formation shear wave velocity gradually decreases from the top to the bottom layers are also studied. The dispersion curves obtained in actual Rayleigh wave exploration are usually noncontinual zigzag curves, but the dispersion curves given by the elastic theory for given modes of the guided waves are smooth and continual curves. In this paper, the mechanism of zigzag dispersion curves in Rayleigh wave exploration is investigated and analyzed thoroughly. The zigzag dispersion curves can give not only the possible positions of the low-velocity layers but also the other information on the formation structure (fractures, oil, gas, etc.). It is found that the zigzag dispersion curves of the Rayleigh wave are the result of the leap of the modes and the existence of low velocity layers in a stratified half-space. The effects of the compressional wave velocity, shear wave velocity, and density of each layer on zigzag dispersion curves and the relationship of the low velocity layers to zigzag dispersion curves are also investigated in detail. Finally, the exploration depth of the Rayleigh wave is discussed. The exploration depth of the Rayleigh wave is equal to the wavelength multiplied by a coefficient that is variable and usually given by the work experience and the formation properties of the local work area.

Theoretical and experimental issues of acquiring dispersion curves for bars of arbitrary cross-section are discussed. Since a guided wave can propagate over long distances in a structure, guided waves have great potential for being applied to the rapid non-destructive evaluation of large structures such as rails in the railroad industry. Such fundamental data as phase velocity, group velocity, and wave structure for each guided wave mode is presented for structures with complicated cross-sectional geometries as rail. Phase velocity and group velocity dispersion curves are obtained for bars with an arbitrary cross-section using a semi-analytical finite element method. Since a large number of propagating modes with close phase velocities exist, dispersion curves consisting of only dominant modes are obtained by calculating the displacement at a received point for each mode. These theoretical dispersion curves agree in characteristic parts with the experimental dispersion curves obtained by a two-dimensional Fourier transform technique.

We investigate the guided waves in a multi-layered cylindrical elastic solid medium. The dispersion function of guided waves is usually complex and the dispersion curves of all modes are not conveniently obtained. Here we present an effective method to obtain the dispersion curves of all modes. First, the dispersion function of the guided waves is transformed into a real function. The dispersion curves are then calculated for all the modes of the guided waves by the bisection method. The modes with the orders n = 0, 1, and 2 are analysed in two- and three-layer media. The existence condition of Stoneley wave is discussed. The modes of the guided waves are also investigated in a two-layer medium, in which the velocity of shear wave in the outer layer is less than that in the inner layer.

The peculiarities of solutions of the wave dispersion equation in an unbounded indefinite medium for arbitrarily oriented optical axes are considered. All possible dispersion surfaces arising in such media are described, and the conditions of their existence are obtained. It is shown that only some specific pairs of surfaces are possible. The dispersion equation for the boundary problem is obtained, as well as the dependence of dispersion curves on the orientation of optical axis is investigated. The nonreciprocity of the wave refraction is shown.

Both dispersion curves and wave structures, which are displacement distributions on a bar cross-section, are essential for guided wave NDEs. Theoretical dispersion curves and wave structures for a bar with an arbitrary cross-section are derived in this paper using a special modeling technique called the semi-analytical finite element method (SAFEM). The guidelines for guided wave NDEs of bar-like structures are also shown based on wave structure and modal analysis. First, the relationship between the dispersion curves and their corresponding wave structures were obtained for a square rod. Modes with longitudinal vibration have higher group velocities and torsional modes have constant phase and group velocities. Next, the relationship between the dispersion curves and wave structures for a rail are detailed. The rail is used to represent a bar with a complex cross-section. Similar to the square rod results, the rail's longitudinal modes have higher group velocities. However, the rail contains modes with local vibration. Finally, single mode detection and excitation techniques are introduced. A single mode can be obtained by detecting and exciting with a weighted function that corresponds to a specific mode's wave structure.

The pipe bend significantly changes the propagation characteristics of guided wave, and makes the interpretation of the received signals difficult. Therefore, better understanding of guided wave propagating in bended pipe is essential for the inspection of pipeline comprising bends.First of all,the different features of dispersion curves derived with the semi-analytical finite element method for guided wave in bended pipes are summarized.Secondly, based on the dispersion curves for guided wave in bended pipes, experiments are performed to investigate the mode conversions of L(0,1) mode guided wave traveling through pipe bends. It is found that, except for the mode conversion from L(0,1) to F(1,1),the L(0,1) reflections of bends are also observed in some cases, which are proven to be the mode converted negative L(0,1)mode guided wave, and the negative L(0,1) mode guided wave becomes more obvious with the decrease of excitation frequency and bending radius. The findings of this paper will provide some insight for guided wave behavior in bended pipe, and generalize the application of guided wave inspection in practical pipelines.

Solving the frequency equation and plotting the dispersion curves in problems of wave propagation in cylinders and plates, particularly when the material is anisotropic, are complicated tasks. The traditional numerical methods are usually based on determination of the zeros of the frequency equation by using an iterative find-root algorithm. In this paper, an alternative method is proposed which extracts the solution of the frequency equation in the form of dispersion curves from the three-dimensional illustration of the frequency equation. For this purpose, a three-dimensional representation of the real roots of the frequency equation is first plotted. The dispersion curves, which are the numerical solutions of the frequency equation, are then obtained by a suitable cut in the velocity-frequency plane. The advantages of this method include simplicity, high speed, low possibility of numerical error, and presentation of the results in a graphical form that promotes ease of interpretation. This method is not directly applicable to problems which incorporate high damping or leaky waves. However, if the damping is not very high, it could be a good estimate of the true dispersion curves.

This article presents a numerical study of dispersion characteristics of some symmetric and antisymmetric composites modelled as multilayered packets of layers with arbitrary anisotropy of each layer. The authors introduce a subsidiary boundary problem of three-dimensional elasticity theory for the system of partial differential equations describing the harmonic oscillations of the composite caused by a surface load. The problem reduces to a boundary problem for ordinary differential equations by employing the Fourier transform. An algorithm of constructing the Fourier transform of the Green’s matrix of the given boundary problem is presented. The wave numbers of Lamb waves propagating in composites, their phase velocity surfaces and group wave surfaces are presented through the poles of the transform of the Green’s matrix. The authors obtain the dispersion curves for different directions and frequencies and investigate the dispersion curves and surfaces of wave numbers, phase velocities and group wave surfaces for various composites. The numerical results are then compared with the results obtained by applying other methods.

A theoretical study is presented on the propagation properties of Lamb wave modes in phononic crystal slabs consisting of a row or more of parallel square cylinders placed periodically in the host material. The surfaces of the slabs are parallel to the axis of periodicity. The dispersion curves of Lamb wave modes are calculated based on the supercell method. The finite element method is employed to calculate the band structures and the transmission power spectra, which are in good agreement with the results by the supercell method. We also have found that the dispersion curves of Lamb waves are strongly dependent on the crystal termination, which is the position of the cut plane through the square cylinders. There exist complete or incomplete (truncated) layers of square cylinders with the change of the crystal termination. The influence of the crystal termination on the band gaps of Lamb wave modes is analyzed by numerical simulations. The variation of the crystal termination leads to obvious changes in the dispersion curves of the Lamb waves and the widths of the band gaps.

A semi-analytical finite element method (SAFE) has been widely used for calculating dispersion curves and mode shapes of guided waves as well as transient waves in a bar like structures. Although guided wave inspection is often conducted for water-loaded plates and pipes, most of the SAFE techniques have not been extended to a plate with leaky media. This study describes leaky Lamb wave calculation with the SAFE. We formulated a new solution using a feature that a single Lamb wave mode generates a harmonic plane wave in leaky media. Dispersion curves obtained with the SAFE agreed well with the previous theoretical studies, which represents that the SAFE calculation was conducted with sufficient accuracy. Moreover, we discussed dispersion curves, attenuation curves, and displacement distributions for total transmission modes and leaky plate modes in a single side and both two side water-loaded plate.

An asymptotic and iterative method is proposed to calculate complex dispersion curves for isotropically layered plates. At the first stage, a dispersion equation is derived in explicit form and its limiting form is obtained for the static case. Passages to the limit of coinciding materials or vanishingly small layer thicknesses are investigated. Specific case of materials with coinciding shear moduli is analyzed in detail. Asymptotics of static roots is deduced for a large value of the root magnitude, the error of asymptotics is estimated, and an iterative method is proposed for calculating exact root values. Long-wave asymptotics of dispersion curves is derived, and it is shown that every complex dispersion curve has a long flat initial segment. Asymptotics is the more accurate, the lower the frequency is and the higher the number of the curve is. Exact values of wave numbers on the dispersion curve are also evaluated by another iterative procedure. Examples of calculating the dispersion curves are presented and the efficiency of the algorithm is shown.

In this paper, we investigate the SH wave propagation in a layered piezoelectric (PE) and piezomagnetic (PM) plate with an imperfect magnetoelectroelastic interface. A linear magnetoelectroelastic spring model is used to describe the weakness of the imperfect interface. On the basis of this model, dispersion curves and mode shapes of the SH waves are computed. In particular, a PZT-5A/CoFe2O4 composite plate is considered in the numerical examples to calculate the dispersion curves and the mode shapes for different combinations of the magnetic, electrical and elastic spring constants. The effects of the layer thickness ratio and the electric-magnetic boundary conditions on the dispersion curves are discussed in details. Our results show that for a general weak bonding case, the high modes of the dispersion curves are not monotonous in the range of small wave numbers. With the layer thickness ratio increasing, the wave velocities of the SH waves increase. The electric boundary conditions mainly determine the dispersion curves of the SH waves in the case of a small layer thickness ratio, i.e. a large thickness of the PE layer. The present results have relevant applications in the nondestructive testing and evaluation of the layered PE/PM plate-like wave devices.

Experimentally measured Lamb wave group velocities in composite materials with anisotropic characteristics are not the same as the theoretical group velocities which is calculated with the Lamb wave dispersion equation. This discrepancy arises from the fact that the angle between the group velocity direction and the phase velocity direction in anisotropic materials exists. Wave propagation in a composite material with anisotropic characteristics should be considered with respect to magnitude correction in addition to direction correction. In this study, S0 mode phase velocity dispersion curves are depicted with the variation of degree with respect to the fiber direction using a Lamb wave dispersion relation in the unidirectional, bidirectional, and quasi-isotropic composite plates. Slowness surface is sketched by the reciprocal value of the phase velocity curves. The magnitude and direction of the group velocity could be calculated from the slowness surface. The recalculated group velocities with consideration of the magnitude and direction from the slowness surface are compared with experimentally measured group velocities. The proposed method shows good agreements with theoretical and experimental results.

It is common for dispersion curves of damped periodic materials to be based on real frequencies as a function of complex wavenumbers or, conversely, real wavenumbers as a function of complex frequencies. The former condition corresponds to harmonic wave motion where a driving frequency is prescribed and where attenuation due to dissipation takes place only in space alongside spatial attenuation due to Bragg scattering. The latter condition, on the other hand, relates to free wave motion admitting attenuation due to energy loss only in time while spatial attenuation due to Bragg scattering also takes place. Here, we develop an algorithm for 1D systems that provides dispersion curves for damped free wave motion based on frequencies and wavenumbers that are permitted to be simultaneously complex. This represents a generalized application of Bloch's theorem and produces a dispersion band structure that fully describes all attenuation mechanisms, in space and in time. The algorithm is applied to a viscously damped mass-in-mass metamaterial exhibiting local resonance. A frequency-dependent effective mass for this damped infinite chain is also obtained.

Line-focused PVDF transducers and defocusing measurement method are applied in this work to determine the dispersion curve of the Rayleigh-like surface waves propagating along the circumferential direction of a solid cylinder. Conventional waveform processing method has been modified to cope with the non-linear relationship between phase angle of wave interference and defocusing distance induced by a cylindrically curved surface. A cross correlation method is proposed to accurately extract the cylindrical Rayleigh wave velocity from measured data. Experiments have been carried out on one stainless steel and one glass cylinders. The experimentally obtained dispersion curves are in very good agreement with their theoretical counterparts. Variation of cylindrical Rayleigh wave velocity due to the cylindrical curvature is quantitatively verified using this new method. Other potential applications of this measurement method for cylindrical samples will be addressed.

A system of two different isotropic dielectric plates aligned parallel to each other and separated by a gap is considered. For a sufficiently large gap, electromagnetic eigenwaves in the plates are virtually independent and dispersion curves for the studied system are characterized by an infinite set of intersections. A decrease in the gap thickness leads to coupling between the wave fields and the disappearance of the intersection points due to divergence of the dispersion curves. Each of the dispersion curves of the spectrum transformed under the action of coupling is formed by a set of adjacent portions of initially independent branches corresponding to different plates. A gradual change in the frequency along one of the new dispersion curves results in a periodic displacement of the localization zone of the wave field from one plate to the other.
