In this paper the closed form expressions for the transverse vibrations of a homogenous isotropic, thermoelastic thin beam with voids, based on Euler-Bernoulli theory have been derived. The effects of voids, relaxation times, thermomechanical coupling, surface conditions and beam dimensions on energy dissipation induced by thermoelastic damping in (micro-electromechanical systems) MEMS/(nano-electromechanical systems) NEMS resonators are investigated for beams under clamped and simply supported conditions. Analytical expressions for deflection, temperature change, frequency shifts and thermoelastic damping in the beam have been derived. Some numerical results with the help of MATLAB programming software in case of magnesium like material have also been presented. The computer simulated results in respect of damping factor and frequency shift have been presented graphically.

In this article, the propagation of guided thermoelastic waves in the circumferential direction of orthotropic cylindrical curved plates subjected to stress-free, isothermal boundary conditions is investigated in the context of the Green-Naghdi (GN) generalized thermoelastic theory (without energy dissipation). The coupled wave equations and heat conduction equation are solved by the Legendre orthogonal polynomial series expansion approach. The convergency of the method is discussed through a numerical example. The dispersion curves of thermal modes and elastic modes are illustrated simultaneously. Dispersion curves of the corresponding pure elastic cylindrical plate are also shown to analyze the influence of the thermoelasticity on elastic modes. The displacement, temperature and stress distributions are shown to discuss the differences between the elastic modes and thermal modes. A thermoelastic cylindrical plate with a different ratio of radius to thickness is considered to discuss the influence of the ratio on the characteristics of circumferential thermoelastic waves.

In this paper the asymptotic method has been applied to investigate propagation of generalized thermoelastic waves in an infinite homogenous isotropic plate. The governing equations for the extensional, transversal and flexural motions are derived from the system of three-dimensional dynamical equations of linear theories of generalized thermoelasticity. The asymptotic operator plate model for extensional and flexural free vibrations in a homogenous thermoelastic plate leads to sixth and fifth degree polynomial secular equations, respectively. These secular equations govern frequency and phase velocity of various possible modes of wave propagation at all wavelengths. The velocity dispersion equations for extensional and flexural wave motion are deduced from the three-dimensional analog of Rayleigh-Lamb frequency equation for thermoelastic plate. The approximation for long and short waves along with expression for group velocity has also been obtained. The Rayleigh-Lamb frequency equations for the considered plate are expanded in power series in order to obtain polynomial frequency and velocity dispersion relations and its equivalence established with that of asymptotic method. The numeric values for phase velocity, group velocity and attenuation coefficients has also been obtained using MATHCAD software and are shown graphically for extensional and flexural waves in generalized theories of thermoelastic plate for solid helium material.

The present investigation is concerned with the flexural and transversal wave motion in an infinite, transversely isotropic, thermoelastic plate by asymptotic method. The governing equations for the flexural and transversal motions have been derived from the system of three-dimensional dynamical equations of linear theory of coupled thermoelasticity. The asymptotic operator plate model for free vibrations; both flexural and transversal, in a homogenous thermoelastic plate leads to fifth degree and cubic polynomial secular equations, respectively, that governs frequency and phase velocity of various possible modes of wave propagation at all wavelengths. All the coefficients of differential operator have been expressed as explicit functions of the material parameters. The velocity dispersion equations for the flexural and transversal wave motion have been deduced from the three-dimensional analog of Rayleigh-Lamb frequency equation for thermoelastic plate waves. The approximations for long and short waves and expression for group velocity have also been derived. The thermoelastic Rayleigh-Lamb frequency equations for the considered plate are expanded in power series in order to obtain polynomial frequency and velocity dispersion relations whose equivalence is established with that of asymptotic method. The dispersion curves for phase velocity, group velocity and attenuation coefficient of various flexural and transversal wave modes are shown graphically for aluminum-epoxy material elastic and thermoelastic plates.

Predicting thermoelastic damping (TED) is crucial in the design of high Q MEMS resonators. In the past, there have been few works on analytical modeling of thermoelastic damping in torsion microresonators. This could be related to the assumption of pure torsional mode for the supporting beams in the torsion devices. The pure torsional modes of rectangular supporting beams involve no local volume change, and therefore, they do not suffer any thermoelastic loss. However, the coupled motion of torsion and bending usually exists in the torsion microresonator when it is not excited by pure torque. The bending component of the coupled motion causes flexural vibrations of supporting beams which may result in significant thermoelastic damping for the microresonator. This paper presents an analytical model for thermoelastic damping in torsion microresonators with the coupling effect between torsion and bending. The theory derives a dynamic model for torsion microresonators considering the coupling effect, and approximates the thermoelastic damping by assuming the energy loss to occur only in supporting beams of flexural vibrations. The thermoelastic damping obtained by the present model is compared to the measured internal friction of single paddle oscillators. It is found that thermoelastic damping contributes significantly to internal friction for the case of the higher modes at room temperature. The present model is validated by comparing its results with the finite-element method (FEM) solutions. The effects of structural dimensions and other parameters on thermoelastic damping are investigated for the representative case of torsion microresonators.

The propagation of thermoelastic waves in a homogeneous isotropic, thermally conducting plate bordered with layers of inviscid liquid or half-space of inviscid liquid on both sides is investigated in the context of generalized theories of thermoelasticity. Secular equations for the plate in closed form and isolated mathematical conditions for symmetric and antisymmetric wave modes in completely separate terms are derived. The results for coupled and uncoupled theories of thermoelasticity have been obtained as particular cases. The different regions of secular equations are obtained and special cases, such as Lame modes, thin plate waves and short wavelength waves of the secular equations are also discussed. The secular equations for thermoelastic leaky Lamb waves are also obtained and deduced. The amplitudes of displacement components and temperature change have also been computed and studied. Finally, the numerical solution is carried out for an aluminum-epoxy composite and aluminum materials plate bordered with water. The dispersion curves for symmetric and antisymmetric thermoelastic wave modes and amplitudes of displacement and temperature change in case of fundamental symmetric (S0) and skew symmetric (A0) modes are presented in order to illustrate and compare the theoretical results. The theory and numerical computations are found to be in close agreement. The results have been deduced and compared with the relevant publications available in the literature at the relevant stages of the work.

In this paper, a mathematical model is developed to study the wave propagation in an infinite, homogeneous, transversely isotropic thermo-piezoelectric solid bar of circular cross-sections immersed in inviscid fluid. The present study is based on the use of the three-dimensional theory of elasticity. Three displacement potential functions are introduced to uncouple the equations of motion and the heat and electric conductions. The frequency equations are obtained for longitudinal and flexural modes of vibration and are studied based on Lord-Shulman, Green-Lindsay and Classical theory theories of thermo elasticity. The frequency equations of the coupled system consisting of cylinder and fluid are developed under the assumption of perfect-slip boundary conditions at the fluid-solid interfaces, which are obtained for longitudinal and flexural modes of vibration and are studied numerically for PZT-4 material bar immersed in fluid. The computed non-dimensional frequencies are compared with Lord-Shulman, Green-Lindsay and Classical theory theories of thermo elasticity for longitudinal and flexural modes of vibrations. The dispersion curves are drawn for longitudinal and flexural modes of vibrations. Moreover, the dispersion of specific loss and damping factors are also analyzed for longitudinal and flexural modes of vibrations.

The propagation of thermoelastic waves in homogeneous isotropic plate subjected to stress-free and rigid insulated and isothermal conditions is investigated in the context of conventional coupled thermoelasticity (CT), Lord-Shulman (LS), Green-Lindsay (GL), and Green-Nagdhi (GN) theories of thermoelasticity. Secular equations for the plate in closed form and isolated mathematical conditions for symmetric and skew-symmetric wave mode propagation in completely separate terms are derived. It is shown that the motion for SH modes gets decoupled from the rest of the motion and remains unaffected due to thermo-mechanical coupling and thermal relaxation effects. The phase velocities for SH modes have also been obtained. The results for coupled and uncoupled theories of thermoelasticity have been obtained as particular cases from the derived secular equations. At short wavelength limits the secular equations for symmetric and skew-symmetric waves in a stress-free insulated and isothermal plate reduce to Rayleigh surface waves frequency equations. Finally, the numerical solution is carried out for aluminum-epoxy composite material and the dispersion curves for symmetric and skew-symmetric wave modes are presented to illustrate and compare the theoretical results.

In systems with rotational symmetry, bending modes occur in doubly-degenerate pairs with two independent vibration modes for each repeated natural frequency. In circular plates, the standing waves of two such degenerate bending modes can be superposed with a 1/4 period separation in time to yield a traveling wave response. This is the principle of a traveling wave ultrasonic motor (TWUM), in which a traveling bending wave in a stator drives the rotor through a friction contact. The stator contains teeth to increase the speed at the contact region, and these affect the rotational symmetry of the plate. When systems with rotational symmetry are modified either in their geometry, or by spatially varying their properties or boundary conditions, some mode-pairs split into singlet modes having distinct frequencies. In addition, coupling between some pairs of distinct unperturbed modes also causes quasi-degeneracies in the perturbed modes, which leads their frequency curves to approach and veer away in some regions of the parameter space. This paper discusses the effects of tooth geometry on the behavior of plate modes under free vibration. It investigates mode splitting and quasi-degeneracies and derives analytic expressions to predict these phenomena, using variational methods and a degenerate perturbation scheme for the solution to the plate’s discrete eigenvalue problem; these expressions are confirmed by solving the discrete eigenvalue problem of the plate with teeth.

Free axisymmetric vibrations of an elastic circular plate of linearly varying thickness on an elastic foundation have been studied on the basis of shear theory [1,2]. The transverse displacement and local rotation are expressed as an infinite series. The frequencies corresponding to the first two modes of vibrations are obtained for a circular plate with clamped and simply supported edge conditions for various values of the taper constant and the foundation modulus. The results have been compared with those of reference [3].

b=a的三层特殊复合薄圆板作了特殊的讨论。当边界固定时,一般解和共振频率方程在形式上与均匀等厚薄圆板的相同,只是参量有所不同。同时也求出了简支边界的一般解和共振频率方程。

Only experimental studies are available on large-amplitude vibrations of clamped-free shells. In the present study, large-amplitude nonlinear vibrations of clamped-free circular cylindrical shell are numerically investigated for the first time. Shells with perfect and imperfect shape are studied. The Sanders-Koiter nonlinear shell theory is used to calculate the elastic strain energy. Shell displacement fields (longitudinal, circumferential and radial) are expanded by means of a double mixed series, i.e. harmonic functions for the circumferential variable and Chebyshev polynomials for the longitudinal variable. All boundary conditions are satisfied. The system is discretized by using natural modes of the shell and Lagrange equations by an energy approach, retaining damping through Rayleigh's dissipation function. Different expansions involving from 18 to 52 generalized coordinates are used to study the convergence of the solution. The nonlinear equations of motion are numerically studied by using arclength continuation method and bifurcation analysis. Numerical responses to harmonic radial excitation in the spectral neighborhood of the lowest natural frequency are compared with experimental results available in literature. The effect of geometric imperfections and excitation amplitude are numerically investigated and fully explained.

Time-domain simulation of damped impacted plates. I. Theory and experiments
A time-domain formulation for the flexural vibrations in damped rectangular isotropic and orthotropic plates is developed, in order to investigate transient excitation of plates by means of sound synthesis. The model includes three basic mechanisms of damping (thermoelasticity, viscoelasticity and radiation) using a general differential operator. The four rigidity factors of the plate are modified by perturbation terms, each term corresponding to one specific damping mechanism. The first damping term is derived from the coupling between the thermoelastic stress-strain relations and the heat diffusion equation. The second term is obtained from the general differential formulation of viscoelasticity. The third term is obtained through a Pade approximation of the damping factor which governs the coupling of the plate with the surrounding air. The decay factors predicted by the model reproduce adequately the dependence on both dimensions and frequency of the decay factors measured on rectangular plates of various sizes and thicknesses made of four different materials (aluminum, glass, carbon fiber, and wood). The numerical resolution of the complete problem, including initial and boundary conditions, and the comparison between real and simulated sounds are presented in a companion paper.

Experimental studies have been carried out on the dynamic stability of a cantilever cylindrical shell partially filled with liquid, under horizontal excitation. The test cylinder was harmonically excited with constant acceleration or displacement amplitude. It was found that a combination instability resonance of sum type could occur, involving two natural vibrations with the same axial mode of vibration number but with the circumferential wave numbers differing by one. By varying the dimensionless water height from 0 to 1·0 stepwise by 0·25 increments, the instability regions and vibration modes were determined for two polyester test cylinders. The response waves, axial and circumferential vibration modes, and behavior of the free liquid surface were also observed.

The large-amplitude response of perfect and imperfect, simply supported circular cylindrical shells to harmonic excitation in the spectral neighbourhood of some of the lowest natural frequencies is investigated. Donnell's non-linear shallow-shell theory is used and the solution is obtained by the Galerkin method. Several expansions involving 16 or more natural modes of the shell are used. The boundary conditions on the radial displacement and the continuity of circumferential displacement are exactly satisfied. The effect of internal quiescent, incompressible and inviscid fluid is investigated. The non-linear equations of motion are studied by using a code based on the arclength continuation method. A series of accurate experiments on forced vibrations of an empty and water-filled stainless-steel shell have been performed. Several modes have been intensively investigated for different vibration amplitudes. A closed loop control of the force excitation has been used. The actual geometry of the test shell has been measured and the geometric imperfections have been introduced in the theoretical model. Several interesting non-linear phenomena have been experimentally observed and numerically reproduced, such as softening-type non-linearity, different types of travelling wave response in the proximity of resonances, interaction among modes with different numbers of circumferential waves and amplitude-modulated response. For all the modes investigated, the theoretical and experimental results are in strong agreement.

The initial-boundary-value problem for the equations describing motion of a thin, medium-length, non-circular cylindrical shell is examined. The shell edges are not necessarily plane curves, with the conditions of a joint support, a rigid clamp or a free edge being considered as the boundary conditions. The shell is supposed to experience normal internal (or external) dynamic pressure which may be non-uniform in the circumferential direction. It is assumed that the initial displacements and velocities of the points at the shell middle surface are functions decreasing rapidly away from some generatrix. Using the complex WKB method the asymptotic solution of the governing equations is constructed by superimposing localized families (wave packets) of bending waves running in the circumferential direction. The dependence of frequencies, group velocities, amplitudes and other dynamic characteristics upon variable pressure and geometrical parameters of the shell are studied. As an example, the wave forms of motion of a circular cylindrical shell with sloping edges under growing dynamic pressure are considered. The effect of localization of bending vibrations near the longest generator as well as the effects of reflection, focusing and increasing amplitude in the running wave packets are revealed.
