Separation of Variables and Integral Relations for Special Functions

We show that the method of separation of variables gives a natural generalization of integral relations for classical special functions of one variable. The approach is illustrated by giving a new proof of the quadratic integral relations for the continuous q-ultraspherical polynomials. The separating integral operator M expressed in terms of the Askey-Wilson operator is studied in detail: apart from writing down the characteristic (separation) equations it satisfies, we find its spectrum, eigenfunctions, inversion, invariants (invariant q-difference operators), and give its interpretation as a fractional q-integration operator. We also give expansions of the A₁ Macdonald polynomials into the eigenfunctions of the separating operator M and vice versa.

Interpolation Formulas for Functions of Exponential Type

In the paper we present a derivative-free estimate of the remainder of an arbitrary interpolation rule on the class of entire functions which, moreover, belong to the space L² _(-,+). The theory is based on the use of the Paley-Wiener theorem. The essential advantage of this method is the fact that the estimate of the remainder is formed by a product of two terms. The first term depends on the rule only while the second depends on the interpolated function only. The obtained estimate of the remainder of Lagrange's rule shows the efficiency of the method of estimate. The first term of the estimate is a starting point for the construction of the optimal rule; only the optimal rule with prescribed nodes of the interpolatory rule is investigated. An example illustrates the developed theory.

Stieltjes Polynomials and Related Quadrature Formulae for a Class of Weight Functions

Consider a (nonnegative) measure with support in the interval such that the respective orthogonal polynomials, above a specific index , satisfy a three-term recurrence relation with constant coefficients. We show that the corresponding Stieltjes polynomials, above the index , have a very simple and useful representation in terms of the orthogonal polynomials. As a result of this, the Gauss-Kronrod quadrature formulae for have all the desirable properties, namely, the interlacing of nodes, their inclusion in the closed interval (under an additional assumption on ), and the positivity of all weights. Furthermore, the interpolatory quadrature formulae based on the zeros of the Stieltjes polynomials have positive weights, and both of these quadrature formulae have elevated degrees of exactness.
