Inequalities for Positive Definite Functions

A characterization of bounded sets in Banach spaces in terms of asymptotic cones and the Hausdorff deviations of sets from them homothetic images is obtained. Similar results for generalizations of the notion of boundedness are presented. Boundedness criteria have previously been known only for recessively compact sets.

We find certain conditions to be satisfied by the functions in the orthonormal system so that the Fourier series of each function of finite variation unconditionally converge a.e. The results are best possible.     

On Series of Translates of Positive Functions

For , a discrete infinite set of nonnegative real numbers, and a nonnegative measurable function f: R R ⁺, consider . The sets naturally break into two types. Type 1 consists of such that either C = R almost everywhere or else C = Ø a.e., for every f. Type 2 consists of all the other . We introduce a notion of asymptotic density for and the complementary notion of asymptotic lacunarity. We demonstrate that is of type 2 if it is asymptotically lacunary or else is asymptotically dense and exhibits asymptotically large Q-independent sets. We also give some examples of sets of both types.

Convergence of Series of Fourier Coefficients of p-Absolutely Continuous Functions

In the paper, we generalize the well-known criteria of Bernstein and Stechkin on the absolute convergence in terms of best approximations and moduli of smoothness of continuous functions. We give conditions for the convergence of the series of Fourier coefficients raised to the power in terms of best approximations in the space of p-absolutely continuous functions and in terms of fractional moduli of continuity with respect to this space. We also prove the sharpness of our conditions for 0 < 1 with no restriction and for 1 < 2 under some restrictions.     

Complementary Spaces and Multipliers of Double Fourier Series for Functions of Bounded Variation

Complementary spaces for Fourier series were introduced by G. Goes and generalized by M. Tynnov. In this paper we investigate a notion of complementary space for double Fourier series of functions of bounded variation. Various applications are given.     

Convexity Inequalities for Positive Operators

We prove pointwise convexity (Jensen-type) inequalities of the form Open image in new window where F is a convex function defined on a convex subset of some Banach space X and T is the X-valued extension of a positive operator on some function space. Examples include the pointwise Hölder inequality T(fg) ≤ (Tf ^p )^{1/ p} (Tf ^q )^{1/ q} for a positive sublinear operator T. As applications we consider vector-valued conditional expectation and a ``real'' proof of the Riesz-Thorin theorem for positive operators.

We extend some recent results of S. A. Telyakovskii on the uniform boundedness of the partial sums of Fourier series of functions of bounded variation to periodic functions of two variables, which are of bounded variation in the sense of Hardy. As corollaries, we obtain the classical Parseval formula, the convergence theorem of the series involving the sine Fourier coefficients, and a lower estimate of the best approximation by trigonometric polynomials in the metric of L in a sharpened version.

Weighted Inequalities for Quasi-Monotone Functions

The purpose of this paper is to give characterizations of weightsfor which reverse inequalities of Hölder type for quasi-monotonefunctions are satisfied. Our inequalities with general weightsand with sharp constants complement the results of [2, 8, 9]and [16, 17] for the values of parameters p and q with 1pq<.     

Inequalities for Majorizing Analytic Functions

For analytic functions satisfyingMeyman's majorization conditions, with the use of classical properties of conformal mappings exact inequalities complementing and strengthening the results of Akhiezer and Meyman are derived. As a corollary, for the modulus of the derivative of a rationally-trigonometric function a Bernstein type bound, which implies the result by Borwein, Erdelyi, and Zhang, is obtained.
