Large eddy simulation is performed to investigate air entrainment and mixing in diesel sprays with and without combustion. The Spray A case of the Engine Combustion Network (ECN) is considered in the study, in which liquid n-Dodecane is injected at 1500 bar through a nozzle of 90 μm into a constant volume vessel with an ambient density of 22.8 kg/m3 and an ambient temperature of 900 K. Primary and secondary breakup processes of the liquid fuel are taken into account. The gas and liquid phases are modeled using Eulerian/Lagrangian coupling approach. Detailed chemical kinetics for n-Dodecane is employed to simulate the ignition process and the lifted flames. A chemistry coordinate mapping approach is used for speeding up the calculations. The effect of low temperature ignition (cool flame) on the evaporation process and on the liquid penetration length is analyzed. The effect of combustion heat release from the lifted flames on the vapor spreading in the radial direction and on the vapor transport in the streamwise direction (vapor penetration) is investigated.  相似文献

The interaction of turbulence, temperature fluctuation, liquid fuel transport, mixing and evaporation is studied by using Large Eddy Simulations (LES). To assess the accuracy of the different components of the methods we consider first isothermal, single phase flow in a straight duct. The results using different numerical methods incorporating dynamic Sub-Grid-Scale (SGS) models are compared with DNS and experimental data. The effects of the interactions among turbulence, temperature fluctuation, spray transport, evaporation and mixing of the gaseous fuel are studied by using different assumptions on the temperature field. It has been found that there are strong non-linear interactions among temperature-fluctuation, evaporation and turbulent mixing which require additional modeling if not full LES is used. The developed models and methods have been applied to a gas turbine burner into which liquid fuel is injected. The dispersion of the droplets in the burner is described. The highly turbulent flow occurring inside gas-turbine combustors requires accurate simulation of scalar mixing if CFD methods are to be used with confidence in design. This has motivated the present paper, which describes the implementation of a passive scalar transport equation into an LES code, including assessment/testing of alternative discretisation schemes to avoid over/undershoots and excessive smoothing. Both second order accurate TVD and higher order accurate DRP schemes are assessed. The best performance is displayed by a DRP method, but this is only true on fine meshes; it produces similar (or larger) errors to a TVD scheme on coarser meshes, and the TVD approach has been retained for LES applications. The unsteady scalar mixing performance of the LES code is validated against published DNS data for a slightly heated channel flow. Excellent agreement between the current LES predictions and DNS data is obtained, for both velocity and scalar statistics. Finally, the developed methodology is applied to scalar transport in a confined co-axial jet mixing flow, for which experimental data are available. Agreement with statistically averaged fields for both velocity and scalar, is demonstrated to be very good, and a considerable improvement over the standard eddy viscosity RANS approach. Illustrations are presented of predicted time-resolved information e.g. time histories, and scalar pdf predictions. The LES results are shown, even using a simple Smagorinsky SGS model, to predict (correctly) lower values of the turbulent Prandtl number in the free shear regions of the flow, compared to higher values in the wall-affected regions. The ability to predict turbulent Prandtl number variations (rather than input these as in combustor RANS CFD models) is an important and promising feature of the LES approach for combustor flow simulation since it is known to be important in determining combustor exit temperature traverse.  相似文献

This paper describes a compressible Large Eddy Simulation (LES) used to investigate cyclic variations for nonreacting flow in an optical single cylinder engine setup. The simulated operating point is part of a large experimental database designed to validate LES for cycle-to-cycle prediction, and constitutes a first step towards the realization of fired operating points. The computational domain covers almost the whole experimental setup (intake and exhaust plenums, intake and exhaust ducts, cylinder) to account for acoustic phenomena. The assessment of the computation is performed in two regions of the domain: the intake and exhaust duct predictions are compared to the results of a Helmholtz solver and the experiment (pressure transducers and Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV)) while the in-cylinder dynamics are compared to PIV measurements. The ability of the developed methodology to capture the correct level of cycle-to-cycle variations is demonstrated considering in-cylinder pressure and velocity fields predictions. Cycle-to-cycle variations in velocity are highlighted and localized using a proper orthogonal decomposition analysis.  相似文献

The concept of Momentum Injection (MI) through Moving Surface Boundary layer Control (MSBC) applied to a cubic structure is numerically studied using Large Eddy Simulation at a Reynolds number of 6.7×104. Two small rotating cylinders are used to add the momentum at the front vertical edges of the cube. Two configurations are studied with the yaw angle of 0° and 30°, respectively, with ratio of the rotation velocity of cylinders and the freestream velocity of 2. The results suggest that MI delays the boundary layer separation and reattachment, and thus reduces the drag. A drag reduction of about 6.2 % is observed in the 0° yaw angle case and about 44.1 % reduction in the 30° yaw angle case. In the case of 0° yaw angle, the main change of the flow field is the disappearance of the separation regions near the rotating cylinders and the wake region is slightly changed due to MI. In the 30° yaw angle case, the flow field is changed a lot. Large flow separations near one rotating cylinder and in the wake is significantly reduced, which results in the large drag reduction. Meanwhile, the yaw moment is increased about 50.5 %.  相似文献

The objective of the analysis presented in this work is to investigate the distribution of the anisotropy invariants of the in-cylinder flow to examine the characteristics of the turbulence during an engine cycle and its interactions with the in-cylinder coherent structures. For this purpose, both the results of Large Eddy Simulations of the flow in an internal combustion engine under motored conditions and measurements obtained in the same configuration have been employed. Investigations include an analysis of the in-cylinder flow properties in the engine’s cross plane by means of first and second order statistical moments. Additionally, the behaviour of the flows anisotropy tensor has been analysed. It has been observed that during the intake stroke the in-cylinder turbulence shows a rather anisotropic structure, whereas during the compression stroke it tends to be more isotropic. Furthermore, the degree of anisotropy increases again in correspondence of vortex breakdown, during which particularly high velocity fluctuations have been identified also by experimental investigation.  相似文献

Large Eddy Simulations of a plane turbulent impinging jet have been carried out using the dynamic Smagorinsky model. The statistical results are first validated with the measurements from the literature: mean and turbulent quantities along the jet axis and at different vertical locations are presented. This study is completed by the analysis of the wall shear stress at the impingement wall. This paper presents highly resolved large eddy simulations (LES) of an internal combustion engine (ICE) using an immersed boundary method (IBM), which can describe moving and stationary boundaries in a simple and efficient manner. In this novel approach, the motion of the valves and the piston is modeled by Lagrangian particles, whilst the stationary parts of the engine are described by a computationally efficient IBM. The proposed mesh-free technique of boundary representation is simple for parallelization and suitable for high performance computing (HPC). To demonstrate the method, LES results are presented for the flow and the combustion in an internal combustion engine. The Favre-filtered Navier-Stokes equations are solved for a compressible flow employing a finite volume method on Cartesian grids. Non-reflecting boundary conditions are applied at the intake and the exhaust ports. Combustion is described using a flame surface density (FSD) model with an algebraic reaction rate closure. A simplified engine with a fixed axisymmetric valve (see Appendix A) is employed to show the correctness of the method while avoiding the uncertainties which may be induced by the complex engine geometry. Three test-cases using a real engine geometry are investigated on different grids to evaluate the impact of the cell size and the filter width. The simulation results are compared against the experimental data. A good overall agreement was found between the measurements and the simulation data. The presented method has particular advantages in the efficient generation of the grid, high resolution and low numerical dissipation throughout the domain and an excellent suitability for massively parallel simulations.  相似文献

The filtered density function (FDF) is implemented for a two-dimensional, large eddy simulation (LES) of a gas phase, spatially developing, reacting and non-reacting, constant-density, plane mixing layer in a flow regime prior to the mixing transition where the flow is mainly two-dimensional. The unresolved scalar fluctuations are taken into account by considering the probability density function (PDF) of subgrid scale (SGS) scalar quantities following the FDF approach. In the derived FDF transport equation, the effect of chemical reactions appears in a closed form. The Lagrangian Monte Carlo scheme is used to solve the FDF transport equation. The applicability and performance of the FDF for LES of a reacting plane mixing layer are assessed by comparisons with experimental measurements. In non-reacting flow, the calculated mean streamwise velocity profiles and mean mixture fraction profiles relax to self-similarity, which is in satisfactory agreement with the measurements. In reacting flow, the FDF calculation provided a satisfactory accuracy in comparison with measurements of mean reactant and product concentration. The increase in the total amount of product formation in the flip case demonstrates the asymmetric characteristics of the entrainment and mixing characteristics in the mixing layer. A large eddy simulation of a turbulent premixed flame propagatingthrough a chamber containing a square obstruction is presented anddiscussed. The governing equations for compressible, reacting flowsare Favre filtered and turbulence closure is achieved using thedynamic Smagorinsky subgrid model. A simple flame surface densitymodel based on the flamelet concept is employed for the subgrid scalereaction rate. The simulation gives very good agreement with experimentalresults for the speed and the shape of the flame as it propagates throughthe chamber. The peak pressures, however, are underpredicted by20–30%. Reasons for this are discussed and it is concluded that amore sophisticated combustion model is required for complex flowssuch as this one, if a more accurate prediction of the pressureis to be achieved.  相似文献

Ethanol is identified as an interesting alternative fuel. In this regards, the predictive capability of combustion Large Eddy Simulation approach coupled to Lagrangian droplet dynamic model to retrieve the turbulent droplet dispersion, droplet size distribution, spray evolution and combustion properties is investigated in this paper for an ethanol spray flame. Following the Eulerian-Lagrangian approach with a fully two way coupling, the Favre-filtered low Mach number Navier-Stokes equations are solved on structured grids with dynamic sub-grid scale models to describe the turbulent carrier gas phase. Droplets are injected in polydisperse manner and generated in time dependent boundary conditions. They evaporate to form an air-fuel mixture that yields spray flame. Part of the ethanol droplets evaporates within the prevaporization area before reaching the combustion zone, making the flame to burn in a partially premixed regime. The chemistry is described by a tabulated detailed chemistry based on the flamelet generated manifold approach. The fuel, ethanol, is modeled by a detailed reaction mechanism consisting of 56 species and 351 reversible reactions. The simulation results including excess gas temperature, droplet velocities and corresponding fluctuations, droplet mean diameters and spray volume flux at different distances from the exit plane show good agreement with experimental data. Analysis of combustion spray features allows gaining a deep insight into the two-phase flow process ongoing.  相似文献

Large Eddy Simulation of a Controlled Diffusion Compressor Cascade   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
In this research a Controlled Diffusion (CD) compressor cascade stator blade is simulated at a Reynolds number of ??700,000, based on inflow velocity and chord length, using Large Eddy Simulation (LES). A wide range of flow inlet angles are computed, including conditions near the design angle, and at high negative and positive incidence. At all inlet angles the surface pressure distributions are well-predicted by the LES. Near the design angle the computed suction side boundary layer thickness agrees well with experimental data, whilst the pressure side boundary layer is poorly predicted due to the inability of LES to capture natural boundary layer transition on the present grid. A good estimation of the loss is computed near the design angle, whilst at both high positive and negative incidences the loss is less well predicted owing to discrepancies between the computed and experimental boundary layer thickness. At incidences above the design angle a laminar separation bubble forms near the leading edge of the suction surface, which undergoes a transition to turbulence. Similar behaviour is noted on the pressure surface at negative incidence. At high negative incidence contra-rotating vortex pairs are found to form around the leading edge in response to an unsteady stagnation line across the span of the blade. Such structures are not apparent in time-averaged statistical data due to their highly-transient nature.  相似文献

We present the coupling of a vortex particle-mesh method with immersed lifting lines for the Large Eddy Simulation of wind turbine wakes. The method relies on the Lagrangian discretization of the Navier–Stokes equations in vorticity-velocity formulation. Advection is handled by the particles while the mesh allows the evaluation of the differential operators and the use of fast Poisson solvers. We use a Fourier-based fast Poisson solver which simultaneously allows unbounded directions and inlet/outlet boundaries. The method also allows the feeding of a turbulent incoming flow. We apply this methodology to the study of large scale aerodynamics and wake behavior of tandem wind turbines. We analyze the generators performance, unsteady power, loads and aerodynamics they are subjected to. The average flow field of the wakes is also computed and turbulence statistics are extracted. In particular, we investigate the influence of the type of turbulent inflow used—precomputed or synthetic—, and study wake meandering.  相似文献

Ignition in an aircraft gas turbine combustion chamber is simulated using Large Eddy Simulation (LES) in conjunction with the filtered probability density function (pdf) equation approach, which is solved using the Eulerian stochastic field method. The LES-pdf methodology is used for both dispersed (liquid) and gas phases. The liquid phase is described using a Lagrangian formulation whilst an Eulerian approach is employed for the gas phase. The spark energy deposition was mimicked by a distributed energy source term added to the enthalpy equation. Unsuccessful and successful ignition sequences have been simulated and the results suggest that spark ‘size’ is an important parameter in the ignition of kerosene fuelled combustion chambers.  相似文献

In this work a recently presented combustion chamber that is specifically designed for the investigation of gas-assisted coal combustion and the validation of models is simulated under reactive conditions for the first time. In the configuration coal combustion is assisted and stabilized by a methane flame. In the course of the investigation, the configuration’s complexity is increased successively. Results of the isothermal single-phase flow are discussed first. Subsequently, reproducibility of the single-phase methane flame by means of the applied modeling approach is evaluated. In a further step, coal particles having the same thermal power as the methane flame are injected into the configuration. Particle histories, the conversion of the coal particles as well as its retroactive effect on the gas phase are investigated. Experimental results based on laser diagnostics are provided for all operating points and used for comparison with numerical results. Gas phase velocity fields for all operating points are available. In order to identify the reaction in the reactive single-phase case planar laser induced fluorescence of the OH-radical (OH-PLIF) was applied. Overall good agreement between numerical and experimental results could be obtained. In the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) a Flamelet Generated Manifold (FGM) based model is utilized. The four-dimensional manifold is spanned by two mixture fractions, a reaction progress variable and the enthalpy on which the gas phase chemistry gets mapped onto. Thereby, the model accounts for both, volatiles reaction and char conversion. Furthermore, finite rate chemistry effects as well as non-adiabatic physics are considered.  相似文献

This paper investigates the use of LES for a flow around a three-dimensional axisymmetric hill. Two aspects of this simulation in particular are discussed here, the resolution and the inlet boundary conditions. In contrast to the LES of flows with sharp edge separations which do not require the near-wall dynamics to be fully resolved, the hill flow LES relies on the resolution of the upstream boundary layer in order to provoke the separation at a correct position. Although around 15 ×106 computational cells were used, the resolution of streaky structures in the near-wall region that are important for a LES is not achieved. Two different inlet boundary conditions were used: the steady experimental profile and the time-dependent boundary conditions produced from DNS results of low Reynolds number channel flow. No significant improvement in the results was obtained with the unsteady inlet condition. This indicates that, although the unsteady inlet boundary conditions may be necessary for a successful LES of this flow, they must be followed with the resolution of the boundary layer for a successful LES.  相似文献
