Coherent vibrational dynamics can be observed in atomically precise gold nanoclusters using femtosecond time-resolved pump-probe spectroscopy. It can not only reveal the coupling between electrons and vibrations, but also reflect the mechanical and electronic properties of metal nanoclusters, which holds potential applications in biological sensing and mass detection. Here, we investigated the coherent vibrational dynamics of [Au25(SR)18]- nanoclusters by ultrafast spectroscopy and revealed the origins of these coherent vibrations by analyzing their frequency, phase and probe wavelength distributions. Strong coherent oscillations with frequency of 40 cm-1 and 80 cm-1 can be reproduced in the excited state dynamics of [Au25(SR)18]-, which should originate from acoustic vibrations of the Au13 metal core. Phase analysis on the oscillations indicates that the 80 cm-1 mode should arise from the frequency modulation of the electronic states while the 40 cm-1 mode should originate from the amplitude modulation of the dynamic spectrum. Moreover, it is found that the vibration frequencies of [Au25(SR)18]- obtained in pump-probe measurements are independent of the surface ligands so that they are intrinsic properties of the metal core. These results are of great value to understand the electron-vibration coupling of metal nanoclusters.  相似文献

We report the controlled growth of Au25(SR)18 and Au38 (SR)24 (where R = CH2CH2Ph) nanoclusters of molecular purity via size-focusing from the same crude product that contains a distribution of nanoclusters. In this method, gold salt was first mixed with tetraoctylammonium bromide (TOAB), and then reacted with excess thiol to form Au(I)-SR polymers in THF (as opposed to toluene in previous work), followed by NaBH 4 reduction. The resultant crude product contains polydisperse nanoclusters and was then used as the common starting material for controlled growth of Au25(SR)18 and Au38(SR)24 , respectively. In Route I, Au25(SR)18 nanoclusters of molecular purify were produced from the crude product after 6 h aging at room temperature. In Route II, the crude product was isolated and further subjected to thermal thiol etching in a toluene solution containing excess thiol, and one obtained pure Au38(SR)24 nanoclusters, instead of Au25(SR)18 . This work not only provides a robust and simple method to prepare both Au25(SR)18 and Au38(SR)24 nanoclusters, but also reveals that these two nanoclusters require different environments for the size-focusing growth process.  相似文献

Hierarchical assembly of nanoparticles has been attracting wide interest, as advanced functionalities can be achieved. However, the ability to manipulate structural evolution of artificial nanoparticles into assemblies with atomic precision has been largely unsuccessful. Here we report the evolution from monomeric Au24Au20 into dimeric Au43Ag38 nanoclusters: Au43Ag38 inherits the kernel frameworks from parent Au24Ag20 but exhibits distinct surface motifs; Au24Ag20 is racemic, while Au43Ag38 is mesomeric. Importantly, the evolution from monomers to dimers opens up exciting opportunities exploring currently unknown properties of monomeric and dimeric alloy nanoclusters. The Au24Ag20 clusters show superatomic electronic configurations, while Au43Ag38 clusters have molecular-like characteristics. Furthermore, monomeric Au24Ag20 catalysts readily outperform dimeric Au43Ag38 catalysts in the catalytic reduction of CO2.

The work shows the evolution from monomeric Au24Au20 into dimeric Au43Ag38 nanoclusters and provides exciting opportunities for atomic manufacturing on metal nanoclusters to construct structures and functionality.  相似文献

For the first time total structure determination of homoleptic alkynyl‐protected gold nanoclusters is reported. The nanoclusters are synthesized by direct reduction of PhC≡CAu, to give Au44(PhC≡C)28 and Au36(PhC≡C)24. The Au44 and Au36 nanoclusters have fcc‐type Au36 and Au28 kernels, respectively, as well as surrounding PhC≡C‐Au‐C2(Ph)Au‐C≡CPh dimeric “staples” and simple PhC≡C bridges. The structures of Au44(PhC≡C)28 and Au36(PhC≡C)24 are similar to Au44(SR)28 and Au36(SR)24, but the UV/Vis spectra are different. The protecting ligands influence the electronic structures of nanoclusters significantly. The synthesis of these two alkynyl‐protected gold nanoclusters indicates that a series of gold nanoclusters in the general formula Aux (RC≡C)y as counterparts to Aux (SR)y can be expected.  相似文献

The controlled synthesis and structure determination of a bimetallic nanocluster Au57Ag53(C≡CPh)40Br12 (Au57Ag53) is presented. The metal core has a four‐shell Au2M3@Au34@Ag51 @Au20 (M=1/3 Au+2/3 Ag) architecture. In contrast to the previously reported large nanoclusters that have highly symmetric kernel structures, the metal atoms in Au57Ag53 are arranged in an irregular manner with C1 symmetry. This cluster exhibits excellent thermal stability and is robust under oxidative or basic conditions. The silver precursors play a key role in dictating the structures of the nanoclusters, which suggests the importance of the counteranions used.  相似文献

Atomically precise metal nanoclusters (NCs) have been deemed as an emerging class of metal nanomaterials owing to fascinating size-dependent physicochemical properties, discrete energy band structure, and quantum confinement effect, which are distinct from conventional metal nanoparticles (NPs). Nevertheless, metal NCs suffer from photoinduced self-oxidative aggregation accompanied by in-situ transformation to metal NPs, markedly reducing the photosensitization of metal NCs. Herein, maneuvering the generic instability of metal NCs, we perform the charge transport impetus comparison between atomically precise metal NCs and plasmonic metal NPs counterpart obtained from in-situ self-transformation of metal NCs in photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting reaction. For conceptual demonstration, we proposed two quintessential heterostructures, which include TNTAs-Au25 heterostructure fabricated by electrostatically depositing glutathione (GSH)-protected Au25(GSH)18 NCs on the TiO2 nanotube arrays (TNTAs) substrate, and TNTAs-Au heterostructure constructed by triggering self-transformation of Au25(GSH)18 NCs to plasmonic Au NPs in TNTAs-Au25 via calcination. The results indicate that photoelectrons produced over Au25 NCs are superior to hot electrons of plasmonic Au NPs in stimulating the interracial charge transport toward solar water oxidation. This is mainly ascribed to the significantly accelerated carrier transport kinetics, prolonged carrier lifespan, and substantial photosensitization effect of Au25 NCs compared with plasmonic Au NPs, resulting in the considerably enhanced PEC water splitting performance of TNTAs-Au25 relative to plasmonic TNTAs-Au counterpart under visible light irradiation. Our work would provide important implications for rationally designing atomically precise metal NCs-based photosystems toward solar energy conversion.  相似文献

Understanding the origin and structural basis of the photoluminescence (PL) phenomenon in thiolate-protected metal nanoclusters is of paramount importance for both fundamental science and practical applications. It remains a major challenge to correlate the PL properties with the atomic-level structure due to the complex interplay of the metal core (i.e. the inner kernel) and the exterior shell (i.e. surface Au(i)-thiolate staple motifs). Decoupling these two intertwined structural factors is critical in order to understand the PL origin. Herein, we utilize two Au28(SR)20 nanoclusters with different –R groups, which possess the same core but different shell structures and thus provide an ideal system for the PL study. We discover that the Au28(CHT)20 (CHT: cyclohexanethiolate) nanocluster exhibits a more than 15-fold higher PL quantum yield than the Au28(TBBT)20 nanocluster (TBBT: p-tert-butylbenzenethiolate). Such an enhancement is found to originate from the different structural arrangement of the staple motifs in the shell, which modifies the electron relaxation dynamics in the inner core to different extents for the two nanoclusters. The emergence of a long PL lifetime component in the more emissive Au28(CHT)20 nanocluster reveals that its PL is enhanced by suppressing the nonradiative pathway. The presence of long, interlocked staple motifs is further identified as a key structural parameter that favors the luminescence. Overall, this work offers structural insights into the PL origin in Au28(SR)20 nanoclusters and provides some guidelines for designing luminescent metal nanoclusters for sensing and optoelectronic applications.

Two Au28(SR)20 nanoclusters with an identical core but different shells exhibit a ∼15-fold difference in photoluminescence.  相似文献

Ligands play an important role in determining the atomic arrangement within the metal nanoclusters. Here, we report a new nanocluster [Au23?xAgx(S‐Adm)15] protected by bulky adamantanethiol ligands which was obtained through a one‐pot synthesis. The total structure of [Au23?xAgx(S‐Adm)15] comprises an Au13?xAgx icosahedral core, three Au3(SR)4 units, and one AgS3 staple motif in contrast to the 15‐atom bipyramidal core previously seen in [Au23?xAgx(SR)16]. UV/Vis spectroscopy indicates that the HOMO–LUMO gap of [Au23?xAgx(S‐Adm)15] is 1.5 eV. DFT calculations reveal that [Au19Ag4(S‐Adm)15] is the most stable structure among all structural possibilities. Benefitting from Ag doping, [Au23?xAgx(S‐Adm)15] exhibits drastically improved photocatalytic activity for the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) and phenol under visible‐light irradiation compared to Au23 nanoclusters.  相似文献

Synthesis of atom‐precise alloy nanoclusters with uniform composition is challenging when the alloying atoms are similar in size (for example, Ag and Au). A galvanic exchange strategy has been devised to produce a compositionally uniform [Ag24Au(SR)18]? cluster (SR: thiolate) using a pure [Ag25(SR)18]? cluster as a template. Conversely, the direct synthesis of Ag24Au cluster leads to a mixture of [Ag25?xAux(SR)18]?, x=1–8. Mass spectrometry and crystallography of [Ag24Au(SR)18]? reveal the presence of the Au heteroatom at the Ag25 center, forming Ag24Au. The successful exchange of the central Ag of Ag25 with Au causes perturbations in the Ag25 crystal structure, which are reflected in the absorption, luminescence, and ambient stability of the particle. These properties are compared with those of Ag25 and Ag24Pd clusters with same ligand and structural framework, providing new insights into the modulation of cluster properties with dopants at the single‐atom level.  相似文献

In this work, the effects of thiolate ligands (‐SR, e.g., chain length and functional moiety) on the accessibility and catalytic activity of thiolate‐protected gold nanoclusters (e.g., Au25(SR)18) for 4‐nitrophenol hydrogenation is reported. The data suggest that Au25(SR)18 bearing a shorter alkyl chain shows a better accessibility to the substrates (shown by shorter induction time, t0) and a higher catalytic activity (shown by higher apparent reaction rate constant, kapp). The functional moiety of the ligands is another determinant factor, which clearly suggests that ligand engineering of Au25(SR)18 would be an efficient platform for fine‐tuning its catalytic properties.  相似文献

An assembly strategy for metal nanoclusters using electrostatic interactions with weak interactions, such as C?H???π and π???π interactions in which cationic [Ag26Au(2‐EBT)18(PPh3)6]+ and anionic [Ag24Au(2‐EBT)18]? nanoclusters gather and assemble in an unusual alternating array stacking structure is presented. [Ag26Au(2‐EBT)18(PPh3)6]+ [Ag24Au(2‐EBT)18]? is a new compound type, a double nanocluster ion compound (DNIC). A single nanocluster ion compound (SNIC) [PPh4]+ [Ag24Au(2‐EBT)18]? was also synthesized, having a k‐vector‐differential crystallographic arrangement. [PPh4]+ [Ag24Au(2,4‐DMBT)18]? adopts a different assembly mode from both [Ag26Au(2‐EBT)18(PPh3)6]+ [Ag24Au(2‐EBT)18]? and [PPh4]+ [Ag24Au(2‐EBT)18]?. Thus, the striking packing differences of [Ag26Au(2‐EBT)18(PPh3)6]+ [Ag24Au(2‐EBT)18]?, [PPh4]+ [Ag24Au(2‐EBT)18]? and the existing [PPh4]+ [Ag24Au(2,4‐DMBT)18]? from each other indicate the notable influence of ligands and counterions on the self‐assembly of nanoclusters.  相似文献

The high-dimensional (that is, three-dimensional (3D)) assembly of nanomaterials is an effective means of improving their properties; however, achieving this assembly at the atomic level remains challenging. Herein, we obtained a novel nanocluster, [Au8Ag57(Dppp)4(C6H11S)32Cl2]Cl (Dppp=1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane) showing a 3D octameric assembly mode involving the kernel penetration of eight complete icosahedral Au@Ag10Au2 units for the first time. The atomically precise structure was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and further confirmed by thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry measurements. Furthermore, ligand-induced transformation prompted the conversion of [Au8Ag57(Dppp)4(C6H11S)32Cl2]Cl, with complete octameric fusion into [Au8Ag55(Dppp)4(C6H11S)34][BPh4]2, with incomplete octameric fusion. These observations will hopefully facilitate further research on the assembly of M13 nanobuilding blocks.  相似文献

Decreasing the core size is one of the best ways to study the evolution from AuI complexes into Au nanoclusters. Toward this goal, we successfully synthesized the [Au18(SC6H11)14] nanocluster using the [Au18(SG)14] (SG=L ‐glutathione) nanocluster as the starting material to react with cyclohexylthiol, and determined the X‐ray structure of the cyclohexylthiol‐protected [Au18(C6H11S)14] nanocluster. The [Au18(SR)14] cluster has a Au9 bi‐octahedral kernel (or inner core). This Au9 inner core is built by two octahedral Au6 cores sharing one triangular face. One transitional gold atom is found in the Au9 core, which can also be considered as part of the Au4(SR)5 staple motif. These findings offer new insight in terms of understanding the evolution from [AuI(SR)] complexes into Au nanoclusters.  相似文献

We report two synthetic routes for concurrent formation of phenylmethanethiolate (‐SCH2Ph)‐protected Au20(SR)16 and Au24(SR)24 nanoclusters in one‐pot by kinetic control. Unlike the previously reported methods for thiolate‐protected gold nanoclusters, which typically involve rapid reduction of the gold precursor by excess NaBH4 and subsequent size focusing into atomically monodisperse clusters of a specific size, the present work reveals some insight into the kinetic control in gold–thiolate cluster synthesis. We demonstrate that the synthesis of ‐SCH2Ph‐protected Au20 and Au24 nanoclusters can be obtained through two different, kinetically controlled methods. Specifically, route 1 employs slow addition of a relatively large amount of NaBH4 under slow stirring of the reaction mixture, while route 2 employs rapid addition of a small amount of NaBH4 under rapid stirring of the reaction mixture. At first glance, these two methods apparently possess quite different reaction kinetics, but interestingly they give rise to exactly the same product (i.e., the coproduction of Au20(SCH2Ph)16 and Au24(SCH2Ph)20 clusters). Our results explicitly demonstrate the complex interplay between the kinetic factors that include the addition speed and amount of NaBH4 solution as well as the stirring speed of the reaction mixture. Such insight is important for devising synthetic routes for different sized nanoclusters. We also compared the photoluminescence and electrochemical properties of PhCH2S‐protected Au20 and Au24 nanoclusters with the PhC2H4S‐protected counterparts. A surprising 2.5 times photoluminescence enhancement was observed for the PhCH2S‐capped nanoclusters when compared to the PhC2H4S‐capped analogues, thereby indicating a drastic effect of the ligand that is merely one carbon shorter.  相似文献

Two homoleptic alkynyl‐protected gold clusters with compositions of Na[Au25(C≡CAr)18] and (Ph4P)[Au25(C≡CAr)18] (Na? 1 and Ph4P? 1 , Ar=3,5‐bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl) were synthesized via a direct reduction method. 1 is a magic cluster analogous to [Au25(SR)18]? in terms of electron counts and metal‐to‐ligand ratio. Single‐crystal structure analysis reveals that 1 has an identical Au13 kernel to [Au25(SR)18]?, but adopts a distinctly different arrangement of the six peripheral dimer staple motifs. The steric hindrance of alkynyl ligands is responsible for the D3 arrangement of Au25. The introduction of alkynyl also significantly changes the optical absorption features of the nanocluster as supported by DFT calculations. This magic cluster confirms that there is a similar but quite different parallel alkynyl‐protected metal cluster universe in comparison to the thiolated one.  相似文献

An atomic‐level strategy is devised to gain insight into the origin of nanogold catalysis by using atomically monodisperse Aun(SR)m nanoclusters as well‐defined catalysts for styrene oxidation. The Aun(SR)m nanoclusters are emerging as a new class of gold nanocatalyst to overcome the polydispersity of conventional nanoparticle catalysts. The unique atom‐packing structure and electronic properties of Aun(SR)m nanoclusters (<2 nm) are rationalized to be responsible for their extraordinary catalytic activity observed in styrene oxidation. An interesting finding is that quantum size effects of Aun(SR)m nanoclusters, rather than the higher specific surface area, play a major role in gold‐catalyzed selective oxidation of styrene. For example, Au25(SR)18 nanoclusters (≈1 nm) are found to be particularly efficient in activating O2, which is a key step in styrene oxidation, and hence, the ultrasmall Au25 catalyst exhibits higher activity than do larger sizes. This atomic‐level strategy has allowed us to obtain an important insight into some fundamental aspects of nanogold catalysis in styrene oxidation. The ultrasmall yet robust Aun(SR)m nanoclusters are particularly promising for studying the mechanistic aspects of nanogold catalysis and for future design of better catalysts with high activity and selectivity for certain chemical processes.  相似文献

Metal nanoclusters have recently attracted considerable attention, not only because of their special size range but also because of their well-defined compositions and structures. However, subtly tailoring the compositions and structures of metal nanoclusters for potential applications remains challenging. Now, a two-phase anti-galvanic reduction (AGR) method is presented for precisely tailoring Au44(TBBT)28 to produce Au47Cd2(TBBT)31 nanoclusters with a hard-sphere random close-packed structure, exhibiting Faradaic efficiencies of up to 96 % at −0.57 V for the electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to CO.  相似文献

The bonding character within metal nanoclusters represents an intriguing topic, shedding light on the inherent driving force for the packing preference in nanomaterials. Herein, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were conducted to investigate the correlation of the series of isomeric [Au13Ag12(PR3)10X8]+ (X=Cl/Br) clusters, which are mainly differentiated by the coordination mode of the equatorial halides (μ2-, μ3- and μ4-) in the rod-like, bi-icosahedral framework. The theoretical simulation corroborates the variety in the configuration of the Au13Ag12 clusters and elucidates the fast isomerization kinetics among the different configurations. The easy tautomerization and the variety in chloride binding modes correspond to a fluxionality character of the equatorial halides and are verified by the potential energy curve analysis. The structural flexibility of the central Au3Ag10 block is the main driving force, while the relatively stronger Ag−X bonding interaction (compared to that of Au−X), and a sufficient number of halides are also requisite for the associating Ag−X tautomerizations.  相似文献

The self‐assembled structures of atomically precise, ligand‐protected noble metal nanoclusters leading to encapsulation of plasmonic gold nanorods (GNRs) is presented. Unlike highly sophisticated DNA nanotechnology, this strategically simple hydrogen bonding‐directed self‐assembly of nanoclusters leads to octahedral nanocrystals encapsulating GNRs. Specifically, the p‐mercaptobenzoic acid (pMBA)‐protected atomically precise silver nanocluster, Na4[Ag44(pMBA)30], and pMBA‐functionalized GNRs were used. High‐resolution transmission and scanning transmission electron tomographic reconstructions suggest that the geometry of the GNR surface is responsible for directing the assembly of silver nanoclusters via H‐bonding, leading to octahedral symmetry. The use of water‐dispersible gold nanoclusters, Au≈250(pMBA)n and Au102(pMBA)44, also formed layered shells encapsulating GNRs. Such cluster assemblies on colloidal particles are a new category of precision hybrids with diverse possibilities.  相似文献
