High-energy collisional activation (CA) of long-chain fatty acid ions induces decompositions that occur remote from the charge site. These charge-remote fragmentations (CRFs) have been shown to provide much structural information. In this report, the CRF of a continuous series of 12 homoconjugated octadecadienoic acids was studied with fast atom bombardment and tandem mass spectrometry. Each fatty acid was desorbed as the carboxylate anion, [M ? H]?, the dilithiated species, [M ? H+2Li]+, or the bariated species, [M ? H+Ba]+, giving three ways of localizing the charge. A characteristic pattern is generated for CRF of the 1,4-diene functional group, and this allows for the rapid identification of the functional group and its location on the chain. Minor variations of this pattern are observed for the different ionic precursors and for different locations of the double bonds. Furthermore, there are a few complications from different types of charge-proximate reactions, especially of the fatty acid carboxylates.  相似文献

Linear ion-trap multiple-stage mass spectrometric approach (MS n ) towards nearly complete structural elucidation of triacylglycerol (TAG) including (1) assignment the fatty acid substituents on the glycerol backbone and (2) location of the double bond(s) on the unsaturated fatty acyl groups is reported. The characterization is established by the findings that MS2 on the [M+Li]+ ions of TAG yields more abundant ions reflecting losses of the outer fatty acid substituents either as free acids (i.e., [M+Li-R1CO2H]+ and [M+Li-R3CO2H]+ ions) or as lithium salts (i.e., [M+Li-R1CO2Li]+ and [M+Li-R3CO2Li]+ ions) than the ions reflecting the similar losses of the inner fatty acid substituent (i.e., [M+Li-R2CO2Li]+ and [M+Li-R2CO2Li]+ ions). Further dissociation (MS3) of [M+Li-R n CO2H]+ (n=1, 2, or 3) gives rise to the ion series locating the double bonds along the fatty acid chain. These ions arise from charge-remote fragmentations involving β-cleavage with γ-H shift, analogous to those seen for the unsaturated long-chain fatty acids characterized as initiated ions. Significant differences in abundances in the ion pairs reflecting the additional losses of the fatty acid moieties, respectively, were also seen in the MS3 spectra of the [M+Li-R n CO2H]+ and [M+Li-R n CO2Li]+ ions, leading to confirmation of the fatty acid substituents on the glycerol backbone. MS n on the [M+Na]+ and [M+NH4]+ adduct ions also affords location of fatty acid substituents on the glycerol backbone, but not the position of the double bond(s) along the fatty acid chain. Unique ions from internal losses of the glycerol residues were seen in the MS3 spectra of [M+Alk-R n CO2H]+ (n=1, 2, 3) and of [M+Alk-R n CO2Alk]+ (Alk=Li, Na, NH4; n=1, 3). They are signature ions for glycerides and the pathways leading to their formation may involve rearrangements.  相似文献

A variety of fatty acid functional derivatives were desorbed by fast atom bombardment and collisionally activated. Derivatives having a high proton affinity such as fatty amides, pyrrolidides and picolinyl esters fragment to give decompositions that originate remote from the charge site. In contrast, derivatives having a low proton affinity such as fatty acids and fatty esters fragment to give charge-initiated decompositions. Therefore, the choice of the fatty acid functional derivative is important in effecting charge-remote decompositions of the [M + H]+ ions. The collisional activation spectra of the [M + H]+ ions of fatty alcohols and fatty amines were also compared. Based on this comparison, the internal energy required in order for charge-remote fragmentations to occur is estimated to be between 1.4 and 2.9 eV. This work is a guide in designing functional derivatives of fatty acids that undergo charge-remote reactions.  相似文献

Low-energy CAD product-ion spectra of various molecular species of phosphatidylserine (PS) in the forms of [M−H] and [M−2H+Alk] in the negative-ion mode, as well as in the forms of [M+H]+, [M+Alk]+, [M−H+2Alk]+, and [M−2H+3Alk]+ (where Alk=Li, Na) in the positive-ion mode contain rich fragment ions that are applicable for structural determination. Following CAD, the [M−H] ion of PS undergoes dissociation to eliminate the serine moiety (loss of C3H5NO2) to give a [M−H−87] ion, which equals to the [M−H] ion of a phoshatidic acid (PA) and give rise to a MS3-spectrum that is identical to the MS2-spectrum of PA. The major fragmentation process for the [M−2H+Alk] ion of PS arises from primary loss of 87 to give rise to a [M−2H+Alk−87] ion, followed by loss of fatty acid substituents as acids (RxCO2H, x=1,2) or as alkali salts (e. g., RxCO2Li, x=1,2). These fragmentations result in a greater abundance of [M−2H+Alk−87−R2CO2H] than [M−2H+Alk−87−R1CO2H] and a greater abundance of [M−2H+Alk−87−R2CO2Li] than [M−2H+Alk−87−R1CO2Li]; while further dissociation of the [M−2H+Alk−87−R2(or 1)CO2Li] ions gives a preferential formation of the carboxylate anion at sn-1 (R1CO2) over that at sn-2 (R2CO2). Other major fragmentation process arises from differential loss of the fatty acid substituents as ketenes (loss of Rx′CH=CO, x=1,2). This results in a more prominent [M−2H+Alk−R2′CH=CO] ion than [M−2H+Alk−R1′CH=CO] ion. Ions informative for structural characterization of PS are of low abundance in the MS2-spectra of both the [M+H]+ and the [M+Alk]+ ions, but are abundant in the MS3-spectra. The MS2-spectrum of the [M+Alk]+ ion contains a unique ion corresponding to internal loss of a phosphate group probably via the fragmentation processes involving rearrangement steps. The [M−H+2Alk]+ ion of PS yields a major [M−H+2Alk−87]+ ion, which is equivalent to an alkali adduct ion of a monoalkali salt of PA and gives rise to a greater abundance of [M−H+2Alk−87−R1CO2H]+ than [M−H+2Alk−87−R2CO2H]+. Similarly, the [M−2H+3Alk]+ ion of PS also yields a prominent [M−2H+3Alk−87]+ ion, which undergoes consecutive dissociation processes that involve differential losses of the two fatty acyl substituents. Because all of the above tandem mass spectra contain several sets of ion pairs involving differential losses of the fatty acid substituents as ketenes or as free fatty acids, the identities of the fatty acyl substituents and their positions on the glycerol backbone can be easily assigned by the drastic differences in the abundances of the ions in each pair.  相似文献

A detailed study has been carried out of the fast atom bombardment tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) behavior of lithium-attachment ions from three glycol polymers: linear poly(ethylene glycol), linear poly(propylene glycol), and an ethoxylated fatty alcohol. Collisional activation was carried out in the “collision octapole” of a BEoQ hybrid mass spectrometer at a translational energy of 50 eV, with collision gas air. It was found that [M + Li]+ ions provide a number of advantages as precursors for practical MS/MS analysis as compared to the use of [M + H]+ or [M + Na]+ ions. First, [M + Li]+ ions are much more intense than the corresponding [M + H]+ ions. Second, [M + Li]+ ions dissociate to lithiated organic fragments with reasonable efficiency, which is not the case with [M + Na]+ precursors. Third, product ions are generally formed over the entire mass range for low molecular weight polyglycols. The most intense product ions are lithiated, linear polyglycol oligomers. These ions are formed via internal hydrogen transfer reactions which are facilitated by lithium (charge-induced). Two series of less intense product ions are formed via charge-remote fragmentations involving l,4-hydrogen elimination. A fourth product ion series consists of lithiated radical cations; these form via homolytic bond cleavages near chain ends. Overall, MS/MS analysis of [M + Li]+ polyglycol ions proved to be quite useful for chemical structure elucidation.  相似文献

Collision-induced decompositions (CIDs) of the [M + H]+, [M + Li]+, [M + Na]+, [M + K]+ and [M + Ag]+ ions of some methyl-6-deoxy-6-bromo-α-D-glucopyranoside derivatives are discussed. Elimination of MeOH resulting in the glycosidyl cation is the predominant reaction of the [M + H]+ ion. This process is completely suppressed during CID of the metal-cationized species, which, surprisingly, show elimination of the added metal in the form of RCOO-metal and metal bromide in the case of the ester derivatives. These reactions appear to be assisted by neighbouring group participation. Because of the proximity of the C(3)-oxygen with C(6), the benzyl ether derivative is characterized by the loss of PhCH2Br from the [M + metal]+ ion.  相似文献

A strategy is described to locate the carbonyl position in oxofatty acids by utilizing charge-remote fragmentations of various molecular ions that are desorbed by fast atom bombardment (FAB). Oxofatty acids were cationized with alkali metal ions (Li+, Na+, K+, Rb+, and Cs+) to form [M+2Met?H]+ or alkaline earth metal ions (Mg2+, Ca2+, Sr2+ or Ba2+) to form [M+Met?H]+ in the gas phase. The cationized acids undergo charge-remote fragmentations upon high-energy activation, giving a product-ion pattern that has a gap corresponding to the oxo position and bordered by two high-intensity peaks. One of the peaks corresponds to an ion that is formed by the cleavage of the C-C bond β to the oxo position and proximal to the charge (β ion), whereas the other is formed from the cleavage of the C-C bond γ to the oxo position and distal to the charge (γ′ ion). The oxo position is easily determined by identifying the gap and the β and γ′ ions. Furthermore, there are two competing patterns of fragments in a CAD spectrum of an oxofatty acid or ester [M+Li]+ ion. These arise because Li+ attaches to either the oxo or the carboxylic end, as was confirmed by ab initio molecular orbital calculations. The results demonstrate that control of the fragmentation can be guided by an understanding of metal-ion affinities. Collisional activation of the anionic carboxylates gives results that are similar to those for positive ions, showing that the process is not related to the charge status. Collisional activation of [M+H]+ ions does not give structural information because the charge migrates, leading to charge-mediated fragmentations.  相似文献

Geometrically isomeric dicarboxylic acids, such as maleic and fumaric acid and their methyl homologues, and the isomeric phthalic acids, have been investigated using fast atom bombardment, field ionization and field desorption mass spectrometry. The most intense peak in the positive ion fast atom bombardment spectra corresponds with the [M + H]+ ion. This ion, when derived from the E -acids, tragments either by successive loss of water and carbon monoxide or by elimination of carbon dioxide. In the case of the Z -acids only elimination of water from the [M + H]+ ions is observed to occur to a significant extent. The same is true for the [M + H]+ ions of the isomeric phthalic acids, that is the [M + H] ions derived from iso- and terephthalic acid exhibit more fragmentation than those of phthalic acid. All these acids undergo much less fragmentation upon field ionization, where not only abundant [M + H]+ ions, but also abundant [M] ions, are observed. Upon field desorption only the [M + H]+ and [M + Na]+ ions are observed under the measuring conditions. Negative ion fast atom bombardment spectra of the acids mentioned have also been recorded. In addition to the most abundant [M? H]? ions relatively intense peaks are observed, which correspond with the [M]?˙ ions. The fragmentations observed for these ions appear to be quite different from those reported in an earlier electron impact study and in a recent atmospheric pressure ionization investigation.  相似文献

Electron impact mass spectra were measured for five isomers of pyridinobenzanthrones and three isomers of benzobenzanthrones. The fragmentation pattern and intensity of M2+, [M – H]+, [M – CO]i+, [M – CO – H(or 2H)]i+ and [M – CO – HCN]i+ (i = 1, 2) ions indicated remarkable differences and very interesting features according to the isomers with or without nitrogen and condensation positions of a pyridino or benzo ring to the benzanthrone skeleton. Further, the competition of decompositions through [M – H]+, [M – CO] or [M – HCN] ions was confirmed by the observation of metastable ions and the appearance energies of fragment ions. Interesting observations from these results were expulsion of an H atom in close proximity to the area around an O?C group, a weak bonding interaction between sp2 C? H and an O?C group, inducing specific hydrogen rearrangement, and characteristic charge localization on heteroatoms.  相似文献

The gas-phase ion chemistry of protonated O,O-diethyl O-aryl phosphorothionates was studied with tandem mass spectrometric and ab initio theoretical methods. Collision-activated dissociation (CAD) experiments were performed for the [M+H]+ ions on a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer. Various amounts of internal energy were deposited into the ions upon CAD by variation of the collision energy and collision gas pressure. In addition to isobutane, deuterated isobutane C4D10 also was used as reagent gas in chemical ionization. The daughter ions [M+H?C2H4]+ and [M+H?2C2H4]+ dominate the CAD spectra. These fragments arise via various pathways, each of which involves γ-proton migration. Formation of the terminal ions [M+H?2C2H4?H2O]+, [M+H?2C2H4?H2S]+, [ZPhOH2]+, [ZPhSH2]+, and [ZPhS]+ [Z = substituent(s) on the benzene ring] suggests that (1) the fragmenting [M+H]+ ions of O,O-diethyl O-aryl phosphorothionates have protons attached on the oxygen of an ethoxy group and on the oxygen of the phenoxy group; (2) thiono-thiolo rearrangement by aryl migration to sulfur occurs; (3) the fragmenting rear-ranged [M+H]+ ions have protons attached on the oxygen of an ethoxy group and on the sulfur of the thiophenoxy group. To get additional support for our interpretation of the mass spectrometric results, some characteristics of three protomers of O,O-diethyl O-phenyl phosphorothionate were investigated by carrying out ab initio molecular orbital calculations at the RHF/3–21G* level of theory.  相似文献

The mass spectra of some 3- and 4-substituted quinoline hydroxamic acids and related compounds have been interpreted, and proposed fragmentations substantiated by means of deuterium-labeling and accurate mass determinations. All compounds examined gave abundant molecular ions; most showed strong [M ? 16]+ ions and weak [M ? 17]+ ions. The expulsion of CO and HCN molecules and H and HCO radicals were common subsequent decompositions. The spectrum of 4-hydroxy-2-methylquinazoline-3-oxide (VII) was unique and showed that nitric oxide was expelled from the molecular ion.  相似文献

Under Ammonia chemical Ionization conditions the source decompositions of [M + NH4]+ ions formed from epimeric tertiary steroid alchols 14 OHβ, 17OHα or 17 OHβ substituted at position 17 have been studied. They give rise to formation of [M + NH4? H2O]+ dentoed as [MHsH]+, [MsH? H2O]+, [MsH? NH3]+ and [MsH? NH3? H2O]+ ions. Stereochemical effects are observed in the ratios [MsH? H2O]+/[MsH? NH3]+. These effects are significant among metastable ions. In particular, only the [MsH]+ ions produced from trans-diol isomers lose a water molecule. The favoured loss of water can be accounted for by an SN2 mechanism in which the insertion of NH3 gives [MsH]+ with Walden inversion occurring during the ion-molecule reaction between [M + NH4]+ + NH3. The SN1 and SNi pathways have been rejected.  相似文献

A study of the chemical ionization (CI) and collisional activation (CA) spectra of a number of α, β-unsaturated nitriles has revealed that the even-electron ions such as [MH]+ and [MNH4]+ produced under chemical ionization undergo decomposition by radical losses also. This results in the formation of M +˙ ions from both [MH]+ and [MNH4]+ ions. In the halogenated molecules losses of X˙ and HX compete with losses of H˙ and HCN. Elimination of X˙ from [MH]+ is highly favoured in the bromoderivative. The dinitriles undergo a substitution reaction in which one of the CN groups is replaced with a hydrogen radical and the resulting mononitrile is ionized leading to [M ? CN + 2H]+ under CI(CH4) or [M ? CN + H + NH4] and [M ? CN + H + N2H7]+ under CI(NH3) conditions.  相似文献

The collision-induced decompositions of the [M + Li]+ and [M + Ag]+ ions of per-O-acetyl- and per-O-benzyl-α-D -thioglycosides having phenyl sulphide, phenyl sulphoxide and phenyl sulphone as the aglycone moieties were studied. The [M + Li]+ ion of the acetyl derivative of the phenylthioglucoside shows loss of AcOLi, whereas its [M + Ag]+ ion shows elimination of PhSAg. Their sulphoxide and sulphone derivatives lose the C(1) and C(2) substituents to form the glucal under both Li+ and Ag+ cationization conditions. The corresponding benzyl derivatives do not show the loss of metal. The formation of glucal leads to ring fragmentation by retro-Diels-Alder reaction in the ring-activated benzyl derivatives.  相似文献

Since no unimolecular fragmentation is observed with [M+Li]+ ions under normal operating conditions the collisional activation method was used to study the fragmentation behaviour of these ions. It was found that the liberation of the [Li]+ ion is a dominant process only with smaller molecules. In addition, direct bond cleavages and new types of rearrangement reactions lead to fragment ions in which the lithium is normally retained. The decomposition behaviour of [M+Li]+ ions represents an intermediate case between that of [M]+ ions and excited neutral molecules and is quite different from that of [M+H]+ ions.  相似文献

Mass Spectra of unsubstituted, 2-methyl-, 3-methyl and 2,3-dimethylchromones were examined. These compounds showed [RDA]+˙ and [RDA + H]+ ions as characteristc ions, together with [M? H]+,[M? CO]+˙,[M? CHO]+ and [RDA? CO]+˙ ions. Based on deuterium labelling experiments and measurement of metastable peaks by the ion kinetic energy defocusing technique, the origin of transferred hydrogen in the [RDA + H]+ ion was clarified. The mechanism of the [RDA + H]+ ion formation is discussed.  相似文献

Fatty acids can be collisionally activated as [M ? H + Cat]+, where Cat is an alkaline earth metal, by using tandem mass spectrometry. High-energy collisional activation induces charge remote fragmentation to give structural information. In the full scan mass spectra molecular ions are easily identified, particularly when barium is used as a cationizing agent; ions are shifted to a higher mass, lower chemical noise region of the mass spectrum. Moreover, the isotopic pattern of barium is characteristic, and the high mass defect of barium allows an easy separation of the cationized analyte from any remaining interfering ions (chemical noise), provided medium mass-resolving power is available. An additional advantage is that most of the ion current is localized in [M ? H + Cat]+ species. Structural analysis of fatty acids can be performed when the sample size is as low as 1 ng.  相似文献

Analyses of a series of nitroaromatic compounds using fast atom bombardment (FAB) mass spectrometry are discussed. An interesting ion-molecule reaction leading to [M + O ? H]? ions is observed in the negative ion FAB spectra. Evidence from linked-scan and collision-induced dissociation spectra proved that [M + O ? H]? ions are produced by the following reaction: M + NO2? → [M + NO2]? → [M + O ? H]?. These experiments also showed that M ions are produced in part by the exchange of an electron between M and NO2? species. All samples showed M, [M ? H]? or both ions in their negative ion FAB spectra. Not all analytes studied showed either [M + H]+ and/or M+˙ in the positive ion FAB spectra. No M+˙ ions were observed for ions having ionization energies above ~9 eV.  相似文献

Mechanisms are proposed for the formation of M+, [M + 2H]+ and [M + 3H]+ ions in the fast atom bombardment (FAB) mass spectra of 4-(2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-oxyl)-piperidol and its carboxylates. Free radical quenching induced by the fast atom beam has been observed. The effects of temperature on the radical quenching and of acid on the FAB mass spectra are discussed. The experiment showed that the volatile liquid samples with vapour pressures higher than that for glycerol produced M+ even-electron molecular ions, and the FAB mass spectra were similar to the corresponding electron ionization mass spectra. For the solid samples, it was found that the free radicals were quenched during the FAB process so that the mononitroxide and dinitroxide compounds produced [M + 2H]+ and [M + 3H]+ ions, respectively. Further experiments showed that the intensities and stabilities of [M + 2H]+ and [M + 3H]+ ions could be improved by addition of acids.  相似文献
