A novel approach of combined mathematical and computational models has been developed to investigate the oscillatory two-layered flow of blood through arterial stenosis in the presence of a transverse uniform magnetic field applied. Blood in the core region and plasma fluid in the peripheral layer region are assumed to obey the law of Newtonian fluid. An analytical solution is obtained for velocity profile and volumetric flow rate in the peripheral plasma region and also wall shear stress. Finite difference method is employed to solve the momentum equation for the core region. The numerical solutions for velocity, flow rate and flow resistance are computed. The effects of various parameters associated with the present flow problem such as radially variable viscosity, hematocrit, plasma layer thickness, magnetic field and pulsatile Reynolds number on the physiologically important flow characteristics namely velocity distribution, flow rate, wall shear stress and resistance to flow have been investigated. It is observed that the velocity increases with the increase of plasma layer thickness. An increase or a decrease in the velocity and wall shear stress against the increase in the value of magnetic parameter (Hartmann number) and hematocrit is dependent on the value of t. An increase in magnetic field leads to an increase in the flow resistance and it decreases with the increase in the plasma layer thickness and pulsatile Reynolds number. The information concerning the phase lag between the flow characteristics and how it is affected by the hematocrit, plasma layer thickness and Hartmann number has, for the first time, been added to the literature.  相似文献

In the present paper an unsteady thermal flow of non-Newtonian fluid is investigated which is of the fiow into axisymmetric mould cavity. In the second part an unsteady thermal flow of upper-convected Maxwell fluid is studied, For the flow into mould cavity the constitutive equation of power-law fluid is used as a rheological model of polymer fluid. The apparent viscosity is considered as a function of shear rate and temperature. A characteristic viscosity is introduced in order to avoid the nonlinearity due to the temperature dependence of the apparent viscosity. As the viscosity of the fluid is relatively high the flow of the thermal fluid can be considered as a flow of fully developed velocity field. However, the temperature field of the fluid fiow is considered as an unsteady one. The governing equations are constitutive equation, momentum equation of steady flow and energy conservation equation of non-steady form. The present system of equations has been solved numerically by the splitting differen  相似文献

An annular liquid jet in a compressible gas medium has been examined using an Eulerian approach with mixed-fluid treatment. The governing equations have been solved by using highly accurate numerical methods. An adapted volume of fluid method combined with a continuum surface force model was used to capture the gas–liquid interface dynamics. The numerical simulations showed the existence of a recirculation zone adjacent to the nozzle exit and unsteady large vortical structures at downstream locations, which lead to significant velocity reversals in the flow field. It was found that the annular jet flow is highly unstable because of the existence of two adjacent shear layers in the annular configuration. The large vortical structures developed naturally in the flow field without external perturbations. Surface tension tends to promote the Kelvin–Helmholtz instability and the development of vortical structures that leads to an increased liquid dispersion. A decrease in the liquid sheet thickness resulted in a reduced liquid dispersion. It was identified that the liquid-to-gas density and viscosity ratios have opposite effects on the flow field with the reduced liquid-to-gas density ratio demoting the instability and the reduced liquid-to-gas viscosity ratio promoting the instability characteristics.  相似文献

We numerically solve the time-dependent planar Poiseuille flow of a Johnson–Segalman fluid with added Newtonian viscosity. We consider the case where the shear stress/shear rate curve exhibits a maximum and a minimum at steady state. Beyond a critical volumetric flow rate, there exist infinite piecewise smooth solutions, in addition to the standard smooth one for the velocity. The corresponding stress components are characterized by jump discontinuities, the number of which may be more than one. Beyond a second critical volumetric flow rate, no smooth solutions exist. In agreement with linear stability analysis, the numerical calculations show that the steady-state solutions are unstable only if a part of the velocity profile corresponds to the negative-slope regime of the standard steady-state shear stress/shear rate curve. The time-dependent solutions are always bounded and converge to different stable steady states, depending on the initial perturbation. The asymptotic steady-state velocity solution obtained in start-up flow is smooth for volumetric flow rates less than the second critical value and piecewise smooth with only one kink otherwise. No selection mechanism was observed either for the final shear stress at the wall or for the location of the kink. No periodic solutions have been found for values of the dimensionless solvent viscosity as low as 0.01.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with a review of both experimental and numerical studies of axisymmetric and planar entry flows which have been considered as test problems for the numerical simulation of viscoelastic fluids. The test of the method is usually based upon whether the numerical model predicts vortices in the entry corners. However, it is not clear as to whether one should observe vortices for all viscoelastic fluids. Polyacrylamide solutions and Boger fluids exhibit vortices in axisymmetric flow and the size of the vortex does increase with fluid elasticity. However, the vortex is nearly suppressed in planar entry flow. On the other hand, not all polymer melts are found to exhibit vortices in either axisymmetric or planar entry flow. It is our belief that the origin of vortices is not related to the elasticity based on shear flow propertes but to the behavior of the transient extensional viscosity. Certain polymer melts such as low density polyethylene exhibit vortices in both planar and axisymmetric flow along with unbounded stress growth at the start up of extensional flow. It is believed that the constitutive equations used in the numerical simulation must reflect this extensional behavior if vortices are to be predicted. A review of the numerical simulations concerned with entry flow shows that there is considerable doubt about the accuracy of the predictions for most of the studies. Even for those where the numerical solution is thought to be accurate, the magnitude of the stream function associated with the vortices is usually very low. None of the differential models used to date predicts strain hardening extensional viscosity, but those which are thought to predict vortices do rise more rapidly to the steady-state extensional viscosity values with time. It is recommended that the search of test fluids be widened beyond polymer solutions as there may already exist a number of polymer melts which behave similarly to the predictions of existing constitutive equations.  相似文献

A generalized Reynolds equation based on non-Newtonian flow is derived in this paper. This equation is suitable for a number of non-Newtonian flow models and can be solved numerically to obtain pressure fields in thermalhydrodynamically or elastohydrodynamically lubricated fluid films. A mathematical approach is given for solving simultaneously the shearing stress, shearing rate, velocity and equivalent viscosity. To show the application of this equation, two rheological models which have been widely used in lubrication mechanics are incorporated into this equation to obtain numerical solutions to the line contact thermal elastohydrodynamic lubrication problem.  相似文献

Three numerical methods, namely, volume of fluid (VOF), simple coupled volume of fluid with level set (S‐CLSVOF), and S‐CLSVOF with the density‐scaled balanced continuum surface force (CSF) model, have been incorporated into OpenFOAM source code and were validated for their accuracy for three cases: (i) an isothermal static case, (ii) isothermal dynamic cases, and (iii) non‐isothermal dynamic cases with thermocapillary flow including dynamic interface deformation. Results have shown that the S‐CLSVOF method gives accurate results in the test cases with mild computation conditions, and the S‐CLSVOF technique with the density‐scaled balanced CSF model leads to accurate results in the cases of large interface deformations and large density and viscosity ratios. These show that these high accuracy methods would be appropriate to obtain accurate predictions in multiphase flow systems with thermocapillary flows. Dynamics of model-stabilized colloidal suspensions were investigated by the self-consistent particle simulation method (SC), a new simulation algorithm that takes into account the interaction between the particles and suspending fluid. In this method, the fluid-particle interaction is introduced self-consistently by combining the finite element method (FEM) for fluid motion with Brownian dynamics (BD) for particle dynamics. To validate the reliability of the proposed algorithm, the shear dynamics of the stable particle suspensions were investigated. Relative viscosity and microstructure as a function of dimensionless shear rate at different volume fractions were in good agreement with previous observations. The robustness of the method was also verified through numerical convergence test. The effect of the fluid-particle interaction was well represented in simulations of two model problems, pressure-driven channel flow and rotating Couette flow. Plug-shaped velocity profile was observed in pressure-driven channel flow, which arised from shear thinning behavior of the stable suspension. In rotating Couette flow, shear banded nonlinear flow profile was observed. Although full hydrodynamic interaction (HI) was not rigorously taken into account, it successfully captured the macroscopic structure-induced flow field. It also takes advantage of the geometrical adaptability of FEM and computational efficiency of BD. We expect this newly developed simulation platform to be useful and efficient for probing the complex flow dynamics of particle systems as well as for practical applications in the complex flow of complex fluids.  相似文献

An accurate numerical simulation of blood requires the solution of incompressible Navier–Stokes equations coupled with specific constitutive models. We consider a generalized Newtonian fluid model in which viscosity depends on shear rate, accounting for the shear‐thinning behavior of blood. Previous work on the design of an artificial graft indicated that there is an influence of the fluid model on the solution of the partial differential equation‐constrained shape optimization problem. Therefore, we carry out a sensitivity analysis of the actual implementation of the flow solver using automatic differentiation (AD). We compare the sensitivities of shear rate with respect to viscosity for different configurations and validate the truncation‐error‐free sensitivities obtained from AD with those based on divided differencing and, if available, with analytic derivatives. Multiphase inertia-dominated flow simulations, and free surface flow models in particular, continue to this day to present many challenges in terms of accuracy and computational cost to industry and research communities. Numerical wave tanks and their use for studying wave-structure interactions are a good example. Finite element method (FEM) with anisotropic meshes combined with dynamic mesh algorithms has already shown the potential to significantly reduce the number of elements and simulation time with no accuracy loss. However, mesh anisotropy can lead to mesh quality-related instabilities. This article presents a very robust FEM approach based on a control volume discretization of the pressure field for inertia dominated flows, which can overcome the typically encountered mesh quality limitations associated with extremely anisotropic elements. Highly compressive methods for the water-air interface are used here. The combination of these methods is validated with multiphase free surface flow benchmark cases, showing very good agreement with experiments even for extremely anisotropic meshes, reducing by up to two orders of magnitude the required number of elements to obtain accurate solutions.  相似文献

An exact analytical solution is presented for the laminar boundary-layer flow over a semi-infinite flat plate subjected to a type of similarity preserving suction. The solution is developed for the case of a plate immersed in either a uniform compressible stream with viscosity proportional to temperature or a uniform incompressible stream with constant viscosity. The problem is formulated in Crocco's variables. It is described by a second-order, non-linear, ordinary differential (and singular) boundary-value problem for the shear stress as a function of the velocity in the boundary layer. A unique solution is shown to exist and to possess a power series representation for all magnitudes of suction. The series is constructed explicitly and provides a transcendental equation for the shear stress at the plate (the important skin friction) which can be solved to any desired accuracy. Examples of upper and lower bounds for the wall shear are presented for several magnitudes of suction and confirm the reasonable accuracy of results obtained heretofore only by numerical solutions of the problem. In addition to the intrinsic value of the technique developed, it can be the basis of accurate checks for the numerical solution of more complex problems.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with the flow of two immiscible fluids through a porous horizontal channel. The fluid in the upper region is the micropolar fluid/the Eringen fluid, and the fluid in the lower region is the Newtonian viscous fluid. The flow is driven by a constant pressure gradient. The presence of micropolar fluids introduces additional rotational parameters. Also, the porous material considered in both regions has two different permeabilities. A direct method is used to obtain the analytical solution of the concerned problem. In the present problem, the effects of the couple stress, the micropolarity parameter, the viscosity ratio, and the permeability on the velocity profile and the microrotational velocity are discussed. It is found that all the physical parameters play an important role in controlling the translational velocity profile and the microrotational velocity. In addition, numerical values of the different flow parameters are computed. The effects of the different flow parameters on the flow rate and the wall shear stress are also discussed graphically.  相似文献

In this paper, we introduce numerical methods that can simulate complex multiphase flows. The finite volume method, applying Cartesian cut-cell is used in the computational domain, containing fluid and solid, to conserve mass and momentum. With this method, flows in and around any geometry can be simulated without complex and time consuming meshing. For the fluid region, which involves liquid and gas, the ghost fluid method is employed to handle the stiffness of the interface discontinuity problem. The interaction between each phase is treated simply by wall function models or jump conditions of pressure, velocity and shear stress at the interface. The sharp interface method “coupled level set (LS) and volume of fluid (VOF)” is used to represent the interface between the two fluid phases. This approach will combine some advantages of both interface tracking/capturing methods, such as the excellent mass conservation from the VOF method and good accuracy of interface normal computation from the LS function. The first coupled LS and VOF will be generated to reconstruct the interface between solid and the other materials. The second will represent the interface between liquid and gas.  相似文献

Recently, Massoudi (2011a) derived a generalized form of a constitutive relation related to Reiner's fluid model for wet sand, where not only the effects of volume fraction are incorporated in the rheological properties of the fluid, but also the shear viscosity depends on the shear rate. In this paper, we use this model to study the fully developed flow of granular-like materials down an inclined plane. The governing equations are made dimensionless and numerical solutions are presented for the various dimensionless parameters.  相似文献

The effects of pulsatile amplitude on sinusoidal transitional turbulent flows through a rigid pipe in the vicinity of a sharp‐edged mechanical ring‐type constriction have been studied numerically. Pulsatile flows were studied for transitional turbulent flow with Reynolds number (Re) of the order of 104, Womersley number (Nw) of the order of 50 with a corresponding Strouhal number (St) of the order of 0.04. The pulsatile flow considered is a sinusoidal flow with dimensionless amplitudes varying from 0.0 to 1.0. Transitional laminar and turbulent flow characteristics in an alternative manner within the pulsatile flow fields were observed and studied numerically. The flow characteristics were studied through the pulsatile contours of streamlines, vorticity, shear stress and isobars. It was observed that fluid accelerations tend to suppress the development of flow disturbances. All the instantaneous maximum values of turbulent kinetic energy, turbulent viscosity, turbulent shear stress are smaller during the acceleration phase when compared with those during deceleration period. Various parametric equations within a pulsatile cycle have also been formulated through numerical experimentations with different pulsatile amplitudes. In the vicinity of constrictions, the empirical relationships were obtained for the instantaneous flow rate (Q), the pressure gradient (dp/dz), the pressure loss (Ploss), the maximum velocity (Vmax), the maximum vorticity (ζmax), the maximum wall vorticity (ζw,max), the maximum shear stress (τmax) and the maximum wall shear stress (τw,max). Elliptic relation was observed between flow rate and pressure gradient. Quadratic relations were observed between flow rate and the pressure loss, the maximum values of shear stress, wall shear stress, turbulent kinematic energy and the turbulent viscosity. Linear relationships exist between the instantaneous flow rate and the maximum values of vorticity, wall vorticity and velocity. The time‐average axial pressure gradient and the time average pressure loss across the constriction were observed to increase linearly with the pulsatile amplitude. The nonequilibrium steady gas flows under the external forces are essentially associated with some extremely complicated nonlinear dynamics, due to the acceleration or deceleration effects of the external forces on the gas molecules by the velocity distribution function. In this article, the gas-kinetic unified algorithm (GKUA) for rarefied transition to continuum flows under external forces is developed by solving the unified Boltzmann model equation. The computable modeling of the Boltzmann equation with the external force terms is presented at the first time by introducing the gas molecular collision relaxing parameter and the local equilibrium distribution function integrated in the unified expression with the flow state controlling parameter, including the macroscopic flow variables, the gas viscosity transport coefficient, the thermodynamic effect, the molecular power law, and molecular models, covering a full spectrum of flow regimes. The conservative discrete velocity ordinate (DVO) method is utilized to transform the governing equation into the hyperbolic conservation forms at each of the DVO points. The corresponding numerical schemes are constructed, especially the forward-backward MacCormack predictor-corrector method for the convection term in the molecular velocity space, which is unlike the original type. Some typical numerical examples are conducted to test the present new algorithm. The results obtained by the relevant direct simulation Monte Carlo method, Euler/Navier-Stokes solver, unified gas-kinetic scheme, and moment methods are compared with the numerical analysis solutions of the present GKUA, which are in good agreement, demonstrating the high accuracy of the present algorithm. Besides, some anomalous features in these flows are observed and analyzed in detail. The numerical experience indicates that the present GKUA can provide potential applications for the simulations of the nonequilibrium external-force driven flows, such as the gravity, the electric force, and the Lorentz force fields covering all flow regimes.  相似文献

Central moment lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) is one of the more recent developments among the lattice kinetic schemes for computational fluid dynamics. A key element in this approach is the use of central moments to specify the collision process and forcing, and thereby naturally maintaining Galilean invariance, an important characteristic of fluid flows. When the different central moments are relaxed at different rates like in a standard multiple relaxation time (MRT) formulation based on raw moments, it is endowed with a number of desirable physical and numerical features. Because the collision operator exhibits a cascaded structure, this approach is also known as the cascaded LBM. While the cascaded LBM has been developed sometime ago, a systematic study of its numerical properties, such as the accuracy, grid convergence, and stability for well‐defined canonical problems is lacking, and the present work is intended to fulfill this need. We perform a quantitative study of the performance of the cascaded LBM for a set of benchmark problems of differing complexity, viz., Poiseuille flow, decaying Taylor–Green vortex flow, and lid‐driven cavity flow. We first establish its grid convergence and demonstrate second‐order accuracy under diffusive scaling for both the velocity field and its derivatives, that is, the components of the strain rate tensor, as well. The method is shown to quantitatively reproduce steady/unsteady analytical solutions or other numerical results with excellent accuracy. The cascaded MRT LBM based on the central moments is found to be of similar accuracy when compared with the standard MRT LBM based on the raw moments, when a detailed comparison of the flow fields are made, with both reproducing even the small scale vortical features well. Numerical experiments further demonstrate that the central moment MRT LBM results in significant stability improvements when compared with certain existing collision models at moderate additional computational cost.
