A sign pattern matrix is a matrix whose entries are from the set {+,-,0}. For a real matrix B, sgn(B) is the sign pattern matrix obtained by replacing each positive (respectively, negative, zero) entry of B by + (respectively, −, 0). For a sign pattern matrix A, the sign pattern class of A, denoted Q(A), is defined as {B:sgn(B)=A}. The minimum rank mr(A) (maximum rank MR(A)) of a sign pattern matrix A is the minimum (maximum) of the ranks of the real matrices in Q(A). Several results concerning sign patterns A that require almost unique rank, that is to say, the sign patterns A such that MR(A) = mr(A) + 1, are established and are extended to sign patterns A for which the spread is d=MR(A)-mr(A). A complete characterization of the sign patterns that require almost unique rank is obtained.  相似文献

A sign pattern matrix (or nonnegative sign pattern matrix) is a matrix whose entries are from the set {+,?, 0} ({+, 0}, respectively). The minimum rank (or rational minimum rank) of a sign pattern matrix A is the minimum of the ranks of the matrices (rational matrices, respectively) whose entries have signs equal to the corresponding entries of A. Using a correspondence between sign patterns with minimum rank r ≥ 2 and point-hyperplane configurations in Rr?1 and Steinitz’s theorem on the rational realizability of 3-polytopes, it is shown that for every nonnegative sign pattern of minimum rank at most 4, the minimum rank and the rational minimum rank are equal. But there are nonnegative sign patterns with minimum rank 5 whose rational minimum rank is greater than 5. It is established that every d-polytope determines a nonnegative sign pattern with minimum rank d + 1 that has a (d + 1) × (d + 1) triangular submatrix with all diagonal entries positive. It is also shown that there are at most min{3m, 3n} zero entries in any condensed nonnegative m × n sign pattern of minimum rank 3. Some bounds on the entries of some integer matrices achieving the minimum ranks of nonnegative sign patterns with minimum rank 3 or 4 are established.  相似文献

A sign pattern matrix is a matrix whose entries are from the set {+,–,0}. The purpose of this paper is to obtain bounds on the minimum rank of any symmetric sign pattern matrix A whose graph is a tree T (possibly with loops). In the special case when A is nonnegative with positive diagonal and the graph of A is star-like, the exact value of the minimum rank of A is obtained. As a result, it is shown that the gap between the symmetric minimal and maximal ranks can be arbitrarily large for a symmetric tree sign pattern A. For a square (0,?1,??1) sign pattern matrix S, denote the qualitative class of S by Q(S). In this article, we investigate the relationship between sign patterns and matrices that diagonalize an irreducible nonnegative matrix. We explicitly describe the sign patterns S such that every matrix in Q(S) diagonalizes some irreducible nonnegative matrix. Further, we characterize the sign patterns S such that some member of Q(S) diagonalizes an irreducible nonnegative matrix. Finally, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for a multiset of real numbers to be realized as the spectrum of an irreducible nonnegative matrix M that is diagonalized by a matrix in the qualitative class of some S 2 NS sign pattern.  相似文献

We show that if A is an M-matrix for which the length of the longest simple cycle in its associated undirected graph G(A) is at most 3, then every minor of A has determined sign (nonnegative or nonpositive), independent of the magnitudes of the matrix entries. Consequently, if A and B are M-matrices such that G(A) and G(B) are subgraphs of an undirected graph with longest simple cycle at most 3, then all principal minors of AB are nonnegative.  相似文献

A sign pattern A is a ± sign pattern if A has no zero entries. A allows orthogonality if there exists a real orthogonal matrix B whose sign pattern equals A. A symmetric matrix A is said to be sign-nonsingular if every symmetric matrix with the same sign pattern as A is nonsingular. Hall, Li and Wang showed that the inertia of a sign-nonsingular symmetric matrix is determined uniquely by its sign pattern. The purpose of this paper is to present an efficient algorithm for computing the inertia of such symmetric matrices. The algorithm runs in time for a symmetric matrix of order n with m nonzero entries. In addition, it is shown to be NP-complete to decide whether the inertia of a given symmetric matrix is not determined by its sign pattern.  相似文献

An upper bound on the maximal entry in the principal eigenvector of a symmetric nonnegative matrix with zero diagonal entries is investigated in [S. Zhao, Y. Hong, On the bounds of maximal entries in the principal eigenvector of symmetric nonnegative matrix, Linear Algebra Appl. 340 (2002) 245-252]. We obtain a sharp upper bound on the maximal entry ymaxp in the principal eigenvector of symmetric nonnegative matrix in terms of order, the spectral radius, the largest and the smallest diagonal entries of that matrix. Our bound is applicable for any symmetric nonnegative matrix and the upper bound of Zhao and Hong (2002) for the maximal entry ymaxp follows as a special case. Moreover, we find an upper bound on maximal entry in the principal eigenvector for the signless Laplacian matrix of a graph.  相似文献

Let G=(V,E) be a simple, connected and undirected graph with vertex set V(G) and edge set E(G). Also let D(G) be the distance matrix of a graph G (Jane?i? et al., 2007) [13]. Here we obtain Nordhaus–Gaddum-type result for the spectral radius of distance matrix of a graph.A sharp upper bound on the maximal entry in the principal eigenvector of an adjacency matrix and signless Laplacian matrix of a simple, connected and undirected graph are investigated in Das (2009) [4] and Papendieck and Recht (2000) [15]. Generally, an upper bound on the maximal entry in the principal eigenvector of a symmetric nonnegative matrix with zero diagonal entries and without zero diagonal entries are investigated in Zhao and Hong (2002) [21] and Das (2009) [4], respectively. In this paper, we obtain an upper bound on minimal entry in the principal eigenvector for the distance matrix of a graph and characterize extremal graphs. Moreover, we present the lower and upper bounds on maximal entry in the principal eigenvector for the distance matrix of a graph and characterize extremal graphs.  相似文献

Let A be a nonnegative square matrix, and let D be a diagonal matrix whose iith element is (Ax)ixi, where x is a (fixed) positive vector. It is shown that the number of final classes of A equals n?rank(A?D). We also show that null(A?D) = null(A?D)2, and that this subspace is spanned by a set of nonnegative elements. An n×n sign pattern matrix A is an inertially arbitrary pattern (IAP) if each non-negative triple (r s t) with r+s+t=n is the inertia of a matrix with sign pattern A. This paper considers the n×n(n2) skew-symmetric sign pattern Sn with each upper off-diagonal entry positive, the (1,1) entry negative, the (n n) entry positive, and every other diagonal entry zero. A real matrix A is a G-matrix if A is nonsingular and there exist nonsingular diagonal matrices D1 and D2 such that A?T = D1AD2, where A?T denotes the transpose of the inverse of A. Denote by J = diag(±1) a diagonal (signature) matrix, each of whose diagonal entries is +1 or ?1. A nonsingular real matrix Q is called J-orthogonal if QTJQ = J. Many connections are established between these matrices. In particular, a matrix A is a G-matrix if and only if A is diagonally (with positive diagonals) equivalent to a column permutation of a J-orthogonal matrix. An investigation into the sign patterns of the J-orthogonal matrices is initiated. It is observed that the sign patterns of the G-matrices are exactly the column permutations of the sign patterns of the J-orthogonal matrices. Some interesting constructions of certain J-orthogonal matrices are exhibited. It is shown that every symmetric staircase sign pattern matrix allows a J-orthogonal matrix. Sign potentially J-orthogonal conditions are also considered. Some examples and open questions are provided.  相似文献

The method fast inverse using nested dissection (FIND) was proposed to calculate the diagonal entries of the inverse of a large sparse symmetric matrix. In this paper, we show how the FIND algorithm can be generalized to calculate off‐diagonal entries of the inverse that correspond to ‘short’ geometric distances within the computational mesh of the original matrix. The idea is to extend the downward pass in FIND that eliminates all nodes outside of each node cluster. In our advanced downwards pass, it eliminates all nodes outside of each ‘node cluster pair’ from a subset of all node cluster pairs. The complexity depends on how far (i,j) is from the main diagonal. In the extension of the algorithm, all entries of the inverse that correspond to vertex pairs that are geometrically closer than a predefined length limit l will be calculated. More precisely, let α be the total number of nodes in a two‐dimensional square mesh. We will show that our algorithm can compute O(α3 ∕ 2 + 2ε) entries of the inverse in O(α3 ∕ 2 + 2ε) time where l = O(α1 ∕ 4 + ε) and 0 ≤ ε ≤1 ∕ 4. Let A be a symmetric matrix and let f be a smooth function defined on an interval containing the spectrum of A. Generalizing a well-known result of Demko, Moss and Smith on the decay of the inverse we show that when A is banded, the entries of f(A)are bounded in an exponentially decaying manner away from the main diagonal. Bounds obtained by representing the entries of f(A)in terms of Riemann-Stieltjes integrals and by approximating such integrals by Gaussian quadrature rules are also considered. Applications of these bounds to preconditioning are suggested and illustrated by a few numerical examples.  相似文献

It is proved that the set theoretic function σ, the spectrum, is continuous on the set C(i)⊂B(Hi) of operators A for which σ(A)={0} implies A is nilpotent (possibly, the 0 operator) and at every non-zero λσp(A) for some operators X and B such that λσp(B) and σ(A)={λ}∪σ(B). If CS(m) denotes the set of upper triangular operator matrices , where AiiC(i) and Aii has SVEP for all 1?i?m, then σ is continuous on CS(m). It is observed that a considerably large number of the more commonly considered classes of Hilbert space operators constitute sets C(i) and have SVEP.  相似文献
