The seasonal variations of indoor radon, thoron and their progeny levels were studied in 20 houses situated in the oil-rich areas of Digboi of Upper Assam. Solid-state nuclear track detectors LR-115 type II were exposed using plastic twin chamber dosemeters to record tracks formed by the two gases and their progeny. Inhalation doses were found out using extracted equilibrium factors and ventilation rates. The random (counting) errors in track densities were determined.  相似文献

An experimental calibration of indoor room and outdoor soil detector devices which are based on LR 115 as sensitive element has taken place at the Swedish Radiation Protection Institute in Stockholm (Sweden) in 1994 and 1996, at the Physikalisch-Technischen Bundesanstalt in Braunschweig (Germany) in 1997 and at the Umweltforschungszentrum Leipzig-Halle (Germany) in 1997. Special properties of the used solid state nuclear track detector (SSNTD) material LR 115* have been measured to define the application of the experimental calibration.  相似文献

In this study total twenty samples (eight reference materials and twelve sediment samples) were analysed for their uranium content which is in the range of 1–17 μg/g, by neutron induced fissionography (NIF) method using solid state nuclear track detectors (SSNTDs) in comparison with the results of neutron activation analysis (NAA), delayed neutron counting (DNC) technique or fluorometric method. It is found that NIF method using SSNTDs is very sensitive for analysis of uranium.  相似文献

The angular distribution of fission fragments in alpha induced fission has been studied at an incident energy of 55 MeV in197Au target. The relative differential fission cross sections were measured at different angles between 10° and 170° and the resulting angular distributions fitted by least squares method with Legendre polynomials. In the present work, a correction for the self-scattering and self-absorption of fission fragments in the target itself was applied and a target of 3 mg/cm2 was used to get good statistics. The anisotropy for 55 MeV alpha induced fission of gold was 2·83±0·43 and the fission cross section calculated by integrating the measured angular distributions over all the solid angles was 5·2±1.0 mb, confirming the value of 4·0±0·05 mb reported by Burnettet al but contrary to the high value of 10±3 mb reported by Ralarosyet al.  相似文献

A laboratory system for the calibration of track detectors and charcoal detectors used in monitoring of radon and its decay products/their aerosols in air, is proposed. The system consists of three main components: (i) the alpha exposure chambers, including alpha monitoring devices and the connection with the 226Ra radioactive source. The CR-39 track detectors are mounted in the monitoring devices pre-equipped or not with paper filter; (ii) the calibrated  226Ra source. Among the three tested sources: 222Rn, 226Ra+222Rn and 226Ra, the 226Ra source is considered the most appropriate radon source for our calibration system. It is kept into an airtight flat bottom flask, the radionuclide 226Ra being always in the radioactive equilibrium with their descendants. In the alpha exposure chambers, the source assures the radon at a constant rate; (iii) the ALFAUURASE program for the computation of radioactive accumulation of the alpha 226Ra descendants. For any initial mass of the parent, the amount and the activity of each alpha decay product and of all the decay products can be calculated by this computation program. Each component of the calibration system is described in the paper. The use of the system for the calibration of CR-39 track detectors in radon measurements is tested.  相似文献

The theoretical and experimental investigations of the penetration of charged particles in matter played a very important role in the development of modern physics. Solid state nuclear track detectors have become one of the most important tools for many branches of science and technology. An attempt has been made to examine the suitability of the single-sheet particle identification technique in CR-39 and CN-85 polycarbonate by plotting track cone length vs. residual range for different heavy ions in these detectors. So, the maximum etchable ranges of heavy ions such as 93Nb, 86Kr and 4He in CR-39 and 4He and 132Xe in CN-85 polycarbonate have been determined. The ranges of these ions in these detectors have also been computed theoretically using the Henke-Benton program. A reasonably good agreement has been observed between the experimentally and theoretically computed values.   相似文献

Experiments have been carried out to detect 2 3He particles and : rotons having energies up to 10 MeV/nucleon by using Kodak CA80-15, cellulose nitrate plastic track detector. Various etching conditions were tried in order to develop tracks for whole of the energy range considered. Detailed analysis seems to indicate that at high energies, the tracks are mainly produced by “secondaries” (elastically scattered nuclei of C, N, O and H, and other reaction products) while in the low energy region, the slowed down “primaries” play the dominant role. The prolonged etching factors of these detectors for different types of tracks have also been obtained and used to derive their average etchable ranges in the materials concerned.  相似文献

The method of solid state nuclear track detectors (SSNTD) has been used for the determination of uranium dioxide distribution in silicate compositions. The method of -radiography based on registration of - particles at the contact of SSNTD CR-39 with the specimen has been used here. An initial uranium dioxide applied for studying the dissolving process used as the standard. The results of the measurements of distribution of uranium dioxide concentration obtained with the help of this technique have been used for the estimation of diffusion and solubility of UO2 in silicate melts.  相似文献

Radon/thoron and their progeny concentrations were measured in different types of dwellings at different locations around industrial areas, cities and rural areas of Brahmaputra Valley of Assam by using LR-115 (type-II) plastic detector. Radon levels of different dwellings were analysed with reference to the nature of building materials, ventilation patterns and the types of underlying soil. The results were discussed under the light of exposure limits set by ICRP. The average concentrations of indoor radon and thoron varied from 39.5 to 215.2 Bqm−3 and 12.9 to 37.6 Bqm−3, respectively. The estimated inhalation dose due to radon, thoron and their daughter products in the study areas varied from 0.53 to 1.00 μSvh−1.  相似文献

LR-115 plastic track detectors have been used for the measurement of radon exhalation rate and radium concentration in soil samples collected from some villages of Kangra district, Himachal Pradesh, India. Uranium concentration has also been determined in these soil samples using fission track technique. Radium concentration in soil samples has been found to vary from 11.54 to 26.71 BqKg−1, whereas uranium concentration varies from 0.75 to 2.06 ppm. The radon exhalation rate in these samples has been found to vary from 15.16 to 35.11 mBqKg−1 h−1 (502.12 to 1162.64 mBqm−2 h−1).  相似文献

Radon (222Rn) and thoron (220Rn) α-activities per unit volume were measured inside and outside different building materials by using two types of solid state nuclear track detectors (SSNTD) (CR-39 and LR-115 type II). In addition, the radon and thoron emanation coefficients of the studied materials were evaluated. Based on these data, the transport of radon and thoron across parallelepipedic blocks of the building materials could be investigated and radon and thoron global α-activities per unit volume outside different building material blocks were determined. Moreover, the diffusion length and the effective diffusion coefficient of radon in the building materials were evaluated and the total alpha activity due to radon in the atmospheres of different rooms consisting of different building materials was studied.  相似文献

In view of the fact that the radon progeny contribute the highest to the natural radiation dose to general populations, large scale and long-term measurements of radon and its progeny in the houses have been receiving considerable attention. Solid State Nuclear Track Detector (SSNTD) based systems, being the best suited for large scale passive monitoring, have been widely used for the radon gas (using a cup closed with a semi-permeable membrane) and to a limited extent, for the measurement of radon progeny (using bare mode in conjunction with the cup). These have been employed for radon mapping and indoor radon epidemiological studies with good results. In this technique, alpha tracks recorded on SSNTD films are converted to radon/thoron concentrations using corresponding conversion factors obtained from calibration experiments carried out in controlled environments. The detector response to alpha particles depends mainly on the registration efficiency of the alpha tracks on the detector films and the subsequent counting efficiency. While the former depends on the exposure design, the latter depends on the protocols followed for developing and counting of the tracks. The paper discusses on parameters like etchant temperature, stirring of the etchant and duration of etching and their influence on the etching rates on LR-115 films. Concept of break down thickness of the SSNTD film in spark counting technique is discussed with experimental results. Error estimates on measurement results as a function of background tracks of the films are also discussed in the paper.   相似文献

Current work is concentrated upon the detection and analysis of hot particles from contaminated ground. Simultaneous measurement of parameters as activity and size of radioactive particle would have immense value for many applications in radiation protection and control of the environment. The algorithm and performance of multiple alpha track analysis is discussed.  相似文献

The DIAS-ESTEC Ultra Heavy Cosmic Ray Experiment (UHCRE) on the Long Duration Exposure Facility, collected approximately 3000 cosmic ray nuclei with Z>65 in the energy region E>1.5 GeVnucleon−1 during a six year exposure in Earth orbit. The entire accessible collecting area of the solid state nuclear track detector (SSNTD) array has been scanned for actinides, yielding a sample of 30 from an exposure of ≈150 m2 sryr. The UHCRE experimental setup is described and the observed charge spectrum presented. The current best value for the cosmic ray actinide relative abundance, (Z>88)/(74Z87), is reported.  相似文献

This work reports a novel method for determining 222Rn (radon) in air using a radon-218Po calibration curve constructed by an absorbable non-volatile liquid scintillator (NVLS). The ability of this method to detect low natural concentrations of radon was confirmed from linear extrapolation of the curve between 500 and 8000 Bq/m3. The calibration curve was created from data obtained from measurements performed in a radon calibration chamber at the National Institute of Radiological Science (NIRS) by using the least-squares method. The line had high precision and stability, and the required detection time was less than that of 214Po. An absorptive NVLS was used to collect radon and was found to be highly advantageous for α-spectrometry liquid scintillation measurements. Variations of the Ostwald coefficient due to changes in temperature and humidity, which affect radon absorption, were investigated and discussed.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of the influence of soft X-ray radiation on craters induced in SSNTDs by energetic α particles and protons of energy in the MeV range. We checked two detectors of the PM-355 and CR-39 types in order to verify and compare their resistance to the harsh conditions of high-temperature plasma experiments. To determine this effect some detector samples were first irradiated with α particles emitted from natural α particle sources and protons delivered by a particle accelerator. After that these samples were exposed to soft X ray radiation emitted from an X ray tube and also from the PF-1000 Plasma Focus facility. Doses during X ray irradiations varied from 0 up to tens of kGy. The irradiated samples were then etched in steps and track diameters were determined versus the absorbed dose and etching time and compared with those measured in samples not exposed to X ray radiation.  相似文献

Production of target fragments from reactions of 160 MeV proton beams in aluminum and polyethylene was measured with CR-39 plastic nuclear track detectors (PNTD). Due to the detection limit of PNTD, primary protons cannot be detected; only low-energy short-range target fragments are registered. As a feasibility study, a so called “two step etching method” was employed to get the linear energy transfer (LET) spectra, absorbed dose, and dose equivalent. This method is discussed in this paper, together with the measured results.  相似文献
