The problem of choosing a subset of elements with maximum diversity from a given set is known as the maximum diversity problem. Many algorithms and methods have been proposed for this hard combinatorial problem, including several highly sophisticated procedures. By contrast, in this paper we present a simple iterated greedy metaheuristic that generates a sequence of solutions by iterating over a greedy construction heuristic using destruction and construction phases. Extensive computational experiments reveal that the proposed algorithm is highly effective as compared to the best-so-far metaheuristics for the problem under consideration.  相似文献

We consider the problem of finding a minimum-length preemptive schedule for n jobs on m parallel machines. The problem is solvable in polynomial time, whether the machines are identical, uniform or unrelated. For identical or uniform machines, it is easy to obtain an optimal schedule in which the portion of a job that is assigned to a single machine is processed without interruption. We show that imposing this condition in the case of unrelated machines makes the problem NP-hard.  相似文献

Traditionally, the permutation flowshop scheduling problem (PFSP) was with the criterion of minimizing makespan. The permutation flowshop scheduling problem to minimize the total flowtime has attracted more attention from researchers in recent years. In this paper, a hybrid genetic local search algorithm is proposed to solve this problem with each of both criteria. The proposed algorithm hybridizes the genetic algorithm and a novel local search scheme that combines two local search methods: the Insertion Search (IS) and the Insertion Search with Cut-and-Repair (ISCR). It employs the genetic algorithm to do the global search and two local search methods to do the local search. Two local search methods play different roles in the search process. The Insertion Search is responsible for searching a small neighborhood while the Insertion Search with Cut-and-Repair is responsible for searching a large neighborhood. Furthermore, the orthogonal-array-based crossover operator is designed to enhance the GA’s capability of intensification. The experimental results show the advantage of combining the two local search methods. The performance of the proposed hybrid genetic algorithm is very competitive. For the PFSP with the total flowtime criterion, it improved 66 out of the 90 current best solutions reported in the literature in short-term search and it also improved all the 20 current best solutions reported in the literature in long-term search. For the PFSP with the makespan criterion, the proposed algorithm also outperforms the other three methods recently reported in the literature.  相似文献

In this study we consider unrelated parallel machines scheduling problems with learning effect and deteriorating jobs, in which the actual processing time of a job is a function of joint time-dependent deterioration and position-dependent learning. The objective is to determine the jobs assigned to corresponding each machine and the corresponding optimal schedule to minimize a cost function containing total completion (waiting) time, total absolute differences in completion (waiting) times and total machine load. If the number of machines is a given constant, we show that the problems can be solved in polynomial time under the time-dependent deterioration and position-dependent learning model.  相似文献

This paper introduces an iterated tabu search heuristic for the daily car sequencing problem in which a set of cars must be sequenced so as to satisfy requirements from the paint shop and the assembly line. The iterated tabu search heuristic combines a classical tabu search with perturbation operators that help escape from local optima. The resulting heuristic is flexible, easy to implement, and fast. It has produced very good results on a set of test instances provided by the French car manufacturer Renault.  相似文献

Over the last decade, many metaheuristics have been applied to the flowshop scheduling problem, ranging from Simulated Annealing or Tabu Search to complex hybrid techniques. Some of these methods provide excellent effectiveness and efficiency at the expense of being utterly complicated. In fact, several published methods require substantial implementation efforts, exploit problem specific speed-up techniques that cannot be applied to slight variations of the original problem, and often re-implementations of these methods by other researchers produce results that are quite different from the original ones. In this work we present a new iterated greedy algorithm that applies two phases iteratively, named destruction, were some jobs are eliminated from the incumbent solution, and construction, where the eliminated jobs are reinserted into the sequence using the well known NEH construction heuristic. Optionally, a local search can be applied after the construction phase. Our iterated greedy algorithm is both very simple to implement and, as shown by experimental results, highly effective when compared to state-of-the-art methods.  相似文献

We consider the following scheduling problem. There arem parallel machines andn independent jobs. Each job is to be assigned to one of the machines. The processing of jobj on machinei requires timep ij . The objective is to find a schedule that minimizes the makespan.Our main result is a polynomial algorithm which constructs a schedule that is guaranteed to be no longer than twice the optimum. We also present a polynomial approximation scheme for the case that the number of machines is fixed. Both approximation results are corollaries of a theorem about the relationship of a class of integer programming problems and their linear programming relaxations. In particular, we give a polynomial method to round the fractional extreme points of the linear program to integral points that nearly satisfy the constraints.In contrast to our main result, we prove that no polynomial algorithm can achieve a worst-case ratio less than 3/2 unlessP = NP. In this work a genetic algorithm is presented for the unrelated parallel machine scheduling problem in which machine and job sequence dependent setup times are considered. The proposed genetic algorithm includes a fast local search and a local search enhanced crossover operator. Two versions of the algorithm are obtained after extensive calibrations using the Design of Experiments (DOE) approach. We review, evaluate and compare the proposed algorithm against the best methods known from the literature. We also develop a benchmark of small and large instances to carry out the computational experiments. After an exhaustive computational and statistical analysis we can conclude that the proposed method shows an excellent performance overcoming the rest of the evaluated methods in a comprehensive benchmark set of instances.  相似文献

We consider unrelated parallel machines scheduling problems involving resource dependent (controllable) processing times and deteriorating jobs simultaneously, i.e., the actual processing time of a job is a function of its starting time and its resource allocation. Two generally resource consumption functions, the linear and convex resource, were investigated. The objective is to find the optimal sequence of jobs and the optimal resource allocation separately. This paper focus on the objectives of minimizing a cost function containing makespan, total completion time, total absolute differences in completion times and total resource cost, and a cost function containing makespan, total waiting time, total absolute differences in waiting times and total resource cost. If the number of unrelated parallel machines is a given constant, we show that the problems remain polynomially solvable under the proposed model.  相似文献

A polynomial-time algorithm is suggested for non-preemptive scheduling of n-independent jobs on m-unrelated machines to minimize the makespan. The algorithm has a worst-case performance ratio of 2−1/m. This is better than the earlier known best performance bound 2. Our approach gives the best possible approximation ratio that can be achieved using the rounding approach.  相似文献

Typically local search methods for solving constraint satisfaction problems such as GSAT, WalkSAT, DLM, and ESG treat the problem as an optimisation problem. Each constraint contributes part of a penalty function in assessing trial valuations. Local search examines the neighbours of the current valuation, using the penalty function to determine a “better” neighbour valuation to move to, until finally a solution which satisfies all the constraints is found. In this paper we investigate using some of the constraints as “hard” constraints, that are always satisfied by every trial valuation visited, rather than as part of a penalty function. In this way these constraints reduce the possible neighbours in each move and also the overall search space. The treating of some constraints as hard requires that the space of valuations that are satisfied is “connected” in order to guarantee that a solution can be found from any starting position within the region; thus the concept of islands and the name “island confinement method” arises. Treating some constraints as hard provides new difficulties for the search mechanism since the search space becomes more jagged, and there are more deep local minima. A new escape strategy is needed. To demonstrate the feasibility and generality of our approach, we show how the island confinement method can be incorporated in, and significantly improve, the search performance of two successful local search procedures, DLM and ESG, on SAT problems arising from binary CSPs. In this work, we introduce a local search strategy for combinatorial optimization problems which explores neighborhoods obtained using fragments of current solutions. We apply the approach to the well-known -hard 2-machine bicriteria flowshop scheduling problem. Computational experiments using benchmark data show the approach to be effective when compared to other algorithms available for the problem.  相似文献

Local search techniques are widely used to obtain approximate solutions to a variety of combinatorial optimization problems. Two important categories of local search methods are neighbourhood search and genetic algorithms. Commonly used neighbourhood search methods include descent, threshold accepting, simulated annealing and tabu search. In this paper, we present a computational study that compares these four neighbourhood search methods, a genetic algorithm, and a hybrid method in which descent is incorporated into the genetic algorithm. The performance of these six local search methods is evaluated on the problem of scheduling jobs in a permutation flow shop to minimize the total weighted completion time. Based on the results of extensive computational tests, simulated annealing is found to generate better quality solutions than the other neighborhood search methods. However, the results also indicate that the hybrid genetic descent algorithm is superior to simulated annealing.  相似文献

Iterated greedy search is a simple and effective metaheuristic for combinatorial problems. Its flexibility enables the incorporation of components from other metaheuristics with the aim of obtaining effective and powerful hybrid approaches. We propose a tabu-enhanced destruction mechanism for iterated greedy search that records the last removed objects and avoids removing them again in subsequent iterations. The aim is to provide a more diversified and successful search process with regards to the standard destruction mechanism, which selects the solution components for removal completely at random.  相似文献

Flowshop scheduling is a very active research area. This problem still attracts a considerable amount of interest despite the sheer amount of available results. Total flowtime minimization of a flowshop has been actively studied and many effective algorithms have been proposed in the last few years. New best solutions have been found for common benchmarks at a rapid pace. However, these improvements many times come at the cost of sophisticated algorithms. Complex methods hinder potential applications and are difficult to extend to small problem variations. Replicability of results is also a challenge. In this paper, we examine simple and easy to implement methods that at the same time result in state-of-the-art performance. The first two proposed methods are based on the well known Iterated Local Search (ILS) and Iterated Greedy (IG) frameworks, which have been applied with great success to other flowshop problems. Additionally, we present extensions of these methods that work over populations, something that we refer to as population-based ILS (pILS) and population-based IG (pIGA), respectively. We calibrate the presented algorithms by means of the Design of Experiments (DOE) approach. Extensive comparative evaluations are carried out against the most recent techniques for the considered problem in the literature. The results of a comprehensive computational and statistical analysis show that the presented algorithms are very effective. Furthermore, we show that, despite their simplicity, the presented methods are able to improve 12 out of 120 best known solutions of Taillard’s flowshop benchmark with total flowtime criterion.  相似文献

The Traveling Umpire Problem (TUP) is a challenging combinatorial optimization problem based on scheduling umpires for Major League Baseball. The TUP aims at assigning umpire crews to the games of a fixed tournament, minimizing the travel distance of the umpires. The present paper introduces two complementary heuristic solution approaches for the TUP. A new method called enhanced iterative deepening search with leaf node improvements (IDLI) generates schedules in several stages by subsequently considering parts of the problem. The second approach is a custom iterated local search algorithm (ILS) with a step counting hill climbing acceptance criterion. IDLI generates new best solutions for many small and medium sized benchmark instances. ILS produces significant improvements for the largest benchmark instances. In addition, the article introduces a new decomposition methodology for generating lower bounds, which improves all known lower bounds for the benchmark instances.  相似文献

The integration of scheduling workers to perform tasks with the traditional vehicle routing problem gives rise to the workforce scheduling and routing problems (WSRP). In the WSRP, a number of service technicians with different skills, and tasks at different locations with pre-defined time windows and skill requirements are given. It is required to find an assignment and ordering of technicians to tasks, where each task is performed within its time window by a technician with the required skill, for which the total cost of the routing is minimized. This paper describes an iterated local search (ILS) algorithm for the WSRP. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated on benchmark instances against an off-the-shelf optimizer and an existing adaptive large neighbourhood search algorithm. The proposed ILS algorithm is also applied to solve the skill vehicle routing problem, which can be viewed as a special case of the WSRP. The computational results indicate that the proposed algorithm can produce high-quality solutions in short computation times.  相似文献

Limited memory influence diagrams are graph-based models that describe decision problems with limited information such as planning with teams and/or agents with imperfect recall. Solving a (limited memory) influence diagram is an NP-hard problem, often approached through local search. In this work we give a closer look at k-neighborhood local search approaches. We show that finding a k-neighboring strategy that improves on the current solution is W[1]-hard and hence unlikely to be polynomial-time tractable. We also show that finding a strategy that resembles an optimal strategy (but may have low expected utility) is NP-hard. We then develop fast schema to perform approximate k-local search; experiments show that our methods improve on current local search algorithms both with respect to time and to accuracy.  相似文献

The Vehicle Routing Problem with Backhauls (VRPB) is an extension of the VRP that deals with two types of customers: the consumers (linehaul) that request goods from the depot and the suppliers (backhaul) that send goods to the depot. In this paper, we propose a simple yet effective iterated local search algorithm for the VRPB. Its main component is an oscillating local search heuristic that has two main features. First, it explores a broad neighborhood structure at each iteration. This is efficiently done using a data structure that stores information about the set of neighboring solutions. Second, the heuristic performs constant transitions between feasible and infeasible portions of the solution space. These transitions are regulated by a dynamic adjustment of the penalty applied to infeasible solutions. An extensive statistical analysis was carried out in order to identify the most important components of the algorithm and to properly tune the values of their parameters. The results of the computational experiments carried out show that this algorithm is very competitive in comparison to the best metaheuristic algorithms for the VRPB. Additionally, new best solutions have been found for two instances in one of the benchmark sets. These results show that the performance of existing metaheuristic algorithms can be considerably improved by carrying out a thorough statistical analysis of their components. In particular, it shows that by expanding the exploration area and improving the efficiency of the local search heuristic, it is possible to develop simpler and faster metaheuristic algorithms without compromising the quality of the solutions obtained.  相似文献
