Surfaces may be rendered superhydrophobic by engineering the surface morphology to control the extent of the liquid-air interface and by the use of low-surface-energy coatings. The droplet state on a superhydrophobic surface under static and dynamic conditions may be explained in terms of the relative magnitudes of the wetting and antiwetting pressures acting at the liquid-air interface on the substrate. In this paper, we discuss the design and fabrication of hollow hybrid superhydrophobic surfaces which incorporate both communicating and noncommunicating air gaps. The surface design is analytically shown to exhibit higher capillary (or nonwetting) pressure compared to solid pillars with only communicating air gaps. Six hybrid surfaces are fabricated with different surface parameters selected such that the Cassie state of a droplet is energetically favorable. The robustness of the surfaces is tested under dynamic impingement conditions, and droplet dynamics are explained using pressure-based transitions between Cassie and Wenzel states. During droplet impingement, the effective water hammer pressure acting due to the sudden change in the velocity of the droplet is determined experimentally and is found to be at least 2 orders of magnitude less than values reported in the literature. The experiments show that the water hammer pressure depends on the surface morphology and capillary pressure of the surface. We propose that the observed reduction in shock pressure may be attributed to the presence of air gaps in the substrate. This feature allows liquid deformation and hence avoids the sudden stoppage of the droplet motion as opposed to droplet behavior on smooth surfaces.  相似文献

How to make the Cassie wetting state stable?   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Wetting of rough hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces is discussed. The stability of the Cassie state, with air trapped in relief details under the droplet, is necessary for the design of true superhydrophobic surfaces. The potential barrier separating the Cassie state and the Wenzel state, for which the substrate is completely wetted, is calculated for both hydrophobic and hydrophilic surfaces. When the surface is hydrophobic, the multiscaled roughness of pillars constituting the surface increases the potential barrier separating the Cassie and Wenzel states. When water fills the hydrophilic pore, the energy gain due to the wetting of the pore hydrophilic wall is overcompensated by the energy increase because of the growth of the high-energetic liquid-air interface. The potential barrier separating the Cassie and Wenzel states is calculated for various topographies of surfaces. Structural features of reliefs favoring enhanced hydrophobicity are elucidated.  相似文献

The stability of wetting states, namely the Cassie state (partial wetting) and the Wenzel state (complete wetting) of surfaces with protrusions, is determined by comparing the total free energy of a liquid drop in terms of their apparent contact angles for different protrusion features. It is found that when the area fraction of the topographical features and the intrinsic contact angle for a flat surface are large, the Cassie state is favored, but it can be either the metastable or stable state. It is shown that the transition from the Cassie state to the Wenzel state requires the application of a pressure to the meniscus between the surface protrusions. The critical transition pressure increases not only with increasing area fraction and intrinsic contact angle, but also with decreasing protrusion size. During the transition, a high-pressure gas can be trapped around the protrusions that can cause the Cassie state to be recovered after the release of the applied pressure. The analysis shows that a droplet can 'hang' upside-down when the protrusion size is very small; namely, the protrusions can pin the meniscus. These results are discussed relative to the advancing and receding contact angle.  相似文献

Approximate equations of the theory of liquids were applied to analyze the special features of the structural behavior of the system of hard spheres in the region of densities at which crystals are stable. Correlation functions for the liquid metastable state were obtained. The correlation functions of crystal-like metastable states that can exist under the same conditions as liquid metastable states are also considered. The reliability of the results is substantiated by a thermodynamic comparison with the data obtained using analytic equations of state.  相似文献

On rough surfaces, two distinct wetting modes can appear. These two states are usually described by the theories of Cassie (drops suspended on top of roughness features) and Wenzel (drops impaled on roughness features). Whereas the wetting transition from the Cassie to the Wenzel state has been relatively well studied both experimentally and theoretically, the question of whether metastable Wenzel drops exist and how they transition to the Cassie state has remained open. In this work, we study the wetting behavior of microstructured post surfaces coated with a hydrophobic fluoropolymer. Through condensation, the formation of metastable Wenzel droplets is induced. We show that under certain conditions drops can transition from the Wenzel to the Cassie state.

Interfacial pressure and density profiles are calculated from molecular dynamics and lattice Boltzmann simulations of a liquid film in equilibrium with its vapor. The set of local values of tangential pressure and density along an interface exhibits a van der Waals-type loop; starting from the stable vapor bulk phase one passes through metastable and unstable states to the stable liquid bulk phase. The minimum and maximum values of the profile of tangential pressure are related to the liquid and vapor spinodal states, respectively. The spinodal pressures turn out to be linearly related to the extreme values of the tangential pressure in the interface. The comparison with equations of state shows good agreement with the simulation results of the spinodals. In addition the properties of the metastable region are obtained. Based on this investigation a method is proposed for the estimation of the liquid spinodal from experimentally obtained interfacial properties. Estimations for water and helium are presented.  相似文献

A liquid droplet sitting on a hydrophobic surface with a cosine wave-like square-array pattern in the Wenzel state is simulated by using the Surface Evolver to determine the contact angle. For a fixed drop volume, multiple metastable states are obtained at two different surface roughnesses. Unusual and non-circular shape of the three-phase contact line of a liquid droplet sitting on the model surface is observed due to corrugation and distortion of the contact line by structure of the roughness. The contact angle varies along the contact line for each metastable state. The maximum and minimum contact angles among the multiple metastable states at a fixed viewing angle correspond to the advancing and the receding contact angles, respectively. It is interesting to observe that the advancing/receding contact angles (and contact angle hysteresis) are a function of viewing angle. In addition, the receding (or advancing) contact angles at different viewing angles are determined at different metastable states. The contact angle of minimum energy among the multiple metastable states is defined as the most stable (equilibrium) contact angle. The Wenzel model is not able to describe the contact angle along the three-phase contact line. The contact angle hysteresis at different drop volumes is determined. The number of the metastable states increases with increasing drop volume. Drop volume effect on the contact angles is also discussed.  相似文献

Discovery of an unexpected and thermodynamically paradoxical transition from a crystalline state to an amorphous dense glassy state induced in pure organic substances by a direct absorption of a quantity of heat under atmospheric pressure and its detailed analysis performed with the use of a sensitive scanning transitiometer are described. The obtained results present first experimental precise evidence for understanding the mechanism of such a structural instability of crystalline substances in the form of c-a transition. The observed c-a transition is a purely physical phenomenon, occurring between two nonequilibrium states, a metastable crystalline phase and a dense glass, occurring through a local transient phenomenon of virtual melting. The metastable state of a crystalline substance can be caused by existence of a number of crystalline imperfections created either during crystallization or by external actions. By measuring extremely sensitive energetic effects, we found the present method to be helpful for quantitative determination of the critical number of imperfections in a crystalline solid, which make it metastable and for an indication under which conditions such a metastable crystalline form becomes unstable. By performing the transitiometric analysis of c-a transitions with two polymorphs of rosiglitazone maleate, we demonstrated to what extent this analysis is important in investigation of stability of crystalline components of drugs.  相似文献

Laboratory evidence shows that the occurrence of solid salt in soil pores causes drastic changes in the topology of the porous spaces and possibly also in the properties of the occluded liquid. Observations were made on NaCl precipitation in micrometric cylindrical capillary tubes, filled with a 5.5 M NaCl aqueous solution and submitted to drying conditions. Solid plug-shaped NaCl (halite) commonly grows at the two liquid-air interfaces, isolating the inner liquid column. The initially homogeneous porosity of the capillary tube becomes heterogeneous because of these two NaCl plugs, apparently closing the micro-system on itself. After three months, we observed cavitation of a vapor bubble in the liquid behind the NaCl plugs. This event demonstrates that the occluded liquid underwent a metastable superheated state, controlled by the capillary state of thin capillary films persisting around the NaCl precipitates. These observations show, first, that salt precipitation can create a heterogeneous porous medium in an initially regular network, thus changing the transfer properties due to isolating significant micro-volumes of liquid. Second, our experiment illustrates that the secondary salt growth drastically modifies the thermo-chemical properties of the occluded liquid and thus its reactive behavior.  相似文献

Wetting and dewetting of solid surfaces by oily fluids were investigated in terms of the stability of the liquid film formed between an air bubble and the solid surface. With the objective of understanding how molecules with low polarity but relatively complex molecular structure behave at the solid/liquid interface, three liquid triglycerides with different chain length and saturation were chosen, namely, tributyrin, tricaprylin, and triolein. Tributyrin and tricaprylin exist in milkfat while triolein is present in vegetable oils. The stability of the liquid films may be inferred from the shape of the disjoining pressure isotherms, which represent the dependence of the disjoining pressure on the film thickness. Disjoining pressure isotherms for films of the three triglycerides on hydrophilic and hydrophobic glasses were obtained using a recently developed apparatus, based on the interferometric technique. The experimental curves are compared with the theoretical predictions of London-Hamaker. The deviations between theory and experiment are interpreted in terms of a structural component of the disjoining pressure. All triglycerides form metastable films on both hydrophilic and hydrophobic glasses which means that for disjoining pressures higher than a critical value, pi(c), a wetting transition occurs and the film ruptures. The mechanisms for film rupture are discussed and a correlation between film stability and the apolar (Lifshitz-van der Waals) and the polar components of the spreading coefficient is proposed.  相似文献

Molecular dynamics methods have been used to investigate the kinetics of the liquid-gas phase transition in a two-component Lennard-Jones system at negative pressures and elastic stretches of the liquid to values close to spinodal ones. The molecular dynamics system consists of 2048 interacting particles with parameters of the Lennard-Jones potential for argon and neon. Density dependences of pressure and internal energy have been calculated for stable and metastable states of the mixture at a temperature T* approximately 0.7+/-0.01 and three values of the concentration. The location of mechanical and the diffusion spinodals has been determined. It has been established that a gas-saturated mixture retains its stability against finite variations of state variables up to stretches close to the values near the diffusion spinodal. The statistic laws of the process of destruction of the metastable state have been investigated. The lifetimes of the metastable phase have been determined. It is shown that owing to the small height of the potential barrier that separates the microheterogeneous from the homogeneous state a system of finite size has a possibility to make the reverse transition from the microheterogeneous into the homogeneous state. The lifetimes of the system in the microheterogeneous state, as well as the expectation times of the occurrence of a critical nucleus, are described by Poissonian distributions.  相似文献

Metastable states such as gels and glasses that are commonly seen in nanoparticle suspensions have found application in a wide range of products including toothpaste, hand cream, paints, and car tires. The equilibrium and metastable state behavior of nanoparticle suspensions are often described by simple fluid models where particles are treated as having hard cores and interacting with short-range attractions. Here we explore similar models to describe the presence of metastable states of small-molecule solutions. We have recently shown that the equilibrium solubilities of small hydrogen-bonding molecules and nanoparticles fall onto a corresponding-states solubility curve suggesting that with similar average strengths of attraction these molecules have similar solubilities. This observation implies that metastable states in small-molecule solutions may be found under conditions similar to those where metastable states are observed in nanoparticle and colloidal suspensions. Here we seek confirmation of this concept by exploring the existence of metastable states in solutions of small molecules.  相似文献

In the present study the synthesis of metastable alloys of the noble metal Au and the semimetal Sb is realized by using high pressure techniques. The influence of Au on bulk Sb is shown experimentally by stepwise substitution. In addition to the effect of the most electronegative noble metal on Pauling's scale in the binary Au‐Sb phases, some ternary compounds with In, Sn, As, and Te in addition to Au and Sb are discussed. The experiments are planned to obtain a better knowledge on the reasons for building up a simple cubic Sb partial lattice, and their crystallographic results are used to construct model structures for new electronic structure calculations from first principles on the metastable π‐phases. Using the LCAO‐CO ansatz and density‐functional methods, we study total energies, band structures, densities of states and charge transfer properties according to Bader's method by integrating zero flux surfaces. Finally, from electronic band structure analysis, the quantities “chemical potential” μ, and “chemical hardness”, η, are derived according to the original ideas of Pearson and Parr and are applied to solid state problems using special points of the Brillouin zones within a band structure approximation for the first time. The results are shown to support the experimental findings about the substitution path within the system Au‐Sb.  相似文献

We report on the simultaneous measurements of the speed of sound and the density in liquid water under negative pressure. Application of a focused acoustic wave to the bulk liquid is able to generate negative pressures before nucleation of the vapor phase occurs. A method for time-resolved Brillouin scattering is developed to measure the speed of sound during the passage of a 1 MHz ultrasonic wave. This is coupled with a fiber optic probe hydrophone which allows the determination of the density. Together, these methods give an ambient temperature equation of state of metastable liquid water down to the acoustic cavitation threshold. Empirical equations of state of water are based on experimental data at positive pressure; the validity of their extrapolation to negative pressures had been tested only indirectly or with very weakly metastable liquid. We provide thermodynamic data that prove the fidelity of recent equations of state down to -26 MPa. However, this raises questions regarding the nature of the cavitation threshold observed in acoustic experiments, which is far less negative than expected.  相似文献

Recent years have witnessed intense interest in multifunctional surfaces that can be designed to switch between different functional states with various external stimuli including electric field, light, pH value, and mechanical strain. The present paper is aimed to explore whether and how a surface can be designed to switch between superhydrophobicity and superhydrophilicity by an applied strain. Based on well-established theories of structure buckling and solid-liquid contact, we show that this objective may be achieved through a hierarchically wrinkled surface. We derive general recursive relations for the apparent contact angle at different levels of the hierarchical surface and investigate the thermodynamic stability of different contact states. Our study may provide useful guidelines for the development of multifunctional surfaces for many technological applications.  相似文献

We report the size-dependent activity and stability of supported Pt1,4,7,8 for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction, and show that clusters outperform polycrystalline Pt in activity, with size-dependent stability. To understand the size effects, we use DFT calculations to study the structural fluxionality under varying potentials. We show that the clusters can reshape under H coverage and populate an ensemble of states with diverse stoichiometry, structure, and thus reactivity. Both experiment and theory suggest that electrocatalytic species are hydridic states of the clusters (≈2 H/Pt). An ensemble-based kinetic model reproduces the experimental activity trend and reveals the role of metastable states. The stability trend is rationalized by chemical bonding analysis. Our joint study demonstrates the potential- and adsorbate-coverage-dependent fluxionality of subnano clusters of different sizes and offers a systematic modeling strategy to tackle the complexities.  相似文献

Molecular switching is a phenomenon by which a molecule reversibly changes its structure and state in response to external stimuli or energy. Herein, molecular switching is discussed from thermodynamic and kinetic aspects in terms of energy supply with an emphasis on the thermal switching exhibited by helicene oligomers. It includes the inversion of relative thermodynamic stability induced by temperature changes and molecular thermal hysteresis in a closed system. The thermal phenomenon associated with the oligomers involves population/concentration changes between metastable states under nonequilibrium thermodynamic control.  相似文献

The time-convolutionless (TCL) quantum master equation provides a powerful tool to simulate reduced dynamics of a quantum system coupled to a bath. The key quantity in the TCL master equation is the so-called kernel or generator, which describes effects of the bath degrees of freedom. Since the exact TCL generators are usually hard to calculate analytically, most applications of the TCL generalized master equation have relied on approximate generators using second and fourth order perturbative expansions. By using the hierarchical equation of motion (HEOM) and extended HEOM methods, we present a new approach to calculating the exact TCL generator and its high order perturbative expansions. The new approach is applied to the spin-boson model with different sets of parameters, to investigate the convergence of the high order expansions of the TCL generator. We also discuss circumstances where the exact TCL generator becomes singular for the spin-boson model, and a model of excitation energy transfer in the Fenna-Matthews-Olson complex.  相似文献

When a mixture is confined, one of the phases can condense out. This condensate, which is otherwise metastable in the bulk, is stabilized by the presence of surfaces. In a sphere-plane geometry, routinely used in atomic force microscope and surface force apparatus, it can form a bridge connecting the surfaces. The pressure drop in the bridge gives rise to additional long-range attractive forces between them. By minimizing the free energy of a binary mixture we obtain the force-distance curves as well as the structural phase diagram of the configuration with the bridge. Numerical results predict a discontinuous transition between the states with and without the bridge and linear force-distance curves with hysteresis. We also show that similar phenomenon can be observed in a number of different systems, e.g., liquid crystals and polymer mixtures.  相似文献
