The current study is focused on examining the effect of the cavity width and side walls on the self-sustained oscillation in a low Mach number cavity flow with a turbulent boundary layer at separation. An axisymmetric cavity geometry is employed in order to provide a reference condition that is free from any side-wall influence, which is not possible to obtain with a rectangular cavity. The cavity could then be partially filled to form finite-width geometry. The unsteady surface pressure is measured using microphone arrays that are deployed on the cavity floor along the streamwise direction and on the downstream wall along the azimuthal direction. In addition, velocity measurements using two-component Laser Doppler Anemometer are performed simultaneously with the array measurements in different azimuthal planes. The compiled data sets are used to investigate the evolution of the coherent structures generating the pressure oscillation in the cavity using linear stochastic estimation of the velocity field based on the wall-pressure signature on the cavity end wall. The results lead to the discovery of pronounced harmonic pressure oscillations near the cavity’s side walls. These oscillations, which are absent in the axisymmetric cavity, are linked to the establishment of a secondary mean streamwise circulating flow pattern near the side walls and the interaction of this secondary flow with the shear layer above the cavity.  相似文献

In a recent publication Bühler (Heat Mass Transfer 39:631–638, 2003) reported new results for conduction regime flow between vertical differentially-heated walls that provide a continuum of solutions between capped and open ends. In this paper we extend Bühler’s work to realize a continuum of solutions of convection regime flow using empirical results for the vertical temperature gradient that develops in tall aspect ratio geometries. The mass flux is determined analytically for this three-parameter family of solutions. Identical viscous and thermal boundary layers exist at the opposing walls when the cavity is capped. However, as the flow evolves to one with open ends, there is an intensification (attenuation) of the boundary layers near the hot (cold) walls. In the limit corresponding to an open-ended cavity, the boundary layer at the cold wall vanishes altogether.  相似文献

The development of the theory of rotational motion of inviscid fluids for the purposes of describing channel flow encounters certain difficulties in connection with the appearance of viscosity effects near the walls. In the potential-rotational model [1], in which the vorticity is nonzero only in a closed circulation zone surrounded by potential flow, it is assumed that the separation and attachment points are known in advance. For example, for flow around a cavity these points coincide with the extreme corner points of the contour. The problem of determining the vorticity in a closed zone for the potential-rotational model has been investigated in a number of studies [2, 3], etc. In the case of an incompressible fluid the vorticity in the circulation zone is constant for two-dimensional flow and proportional to the distance from the axis for axisymmetric flow. The value of the constant is found from the steady-state condition for the adjoining viscous layers. If the channel walls have a smooth profile without corner points, then for determining the boundaries of the circulation zones additional conditions must be used. This study employs another scheme, in which the vorticity is formed outside the region of flow and in a particular problem is specified in the form of a boundary condition. An analytic solution describing the rotational flow of an inviscid fluid in a channel with a slightly varying cross section is obtained. Three types of entrance flow nonuniformity are considered: 1) uniform shear flow, 2) wake-type flow, and 3) potential flow with a narrow wall boundary layer. Streamline patterns with circulation zones are constructed for flows in diffuser channels with the above-mentioned types of entrance nonuniformity. A model of flow separation in a channel with a turbulent boundary layer on the walls is discussed.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 2, pp. 31–37, March–April, 1985.In conclusion the author wishes to thank E. The unsteady interaction of plane-channel wall boundary layers with a supersonic inviscid flow is investigated. The flow regimes in which disturbances introduced by the boundary layer developing on one wall influence the boundary layer on the other wall are considered. The regime of relatively large pressure disturbance amplitudes generated near the nozzle outlet or by deforming the channel walls is studied. In these conditions, the interaction process is described by a system of Burgers equations with retarded arguments. Numerical solutions of this system are obtained for symmetric and antisymmetric perturbations of the channel walls.  相似文献

In this work the numerical and experimental results of heat transfer in a vertical tall closed cavity are presented. The cavity has an aspect ratio of 20, one of the vertical walls receive a constant and uniform heat flux, while the opposite wall is kept at a constant temperature. The remaining walls are assumed adiabatic. The cavity is full of air. The computational fluid dynamics software Fluent 6.3 was used for the simulation and an experimental prototype was built to obtain the heat transfer coefficients. The air temperature and the fluid velocity values are higher when emissivity (ε) is 0.03 (almost pure natural convection). The experimental total heat transfer coefficient increases between 119.9 and 159.9 % when the emissivity of the walls changes from 0.03 to 0.95.

An experimental investigation of a passively controlled open cavity with a length to depth ratio of six and freestream Mach number of 1.4 was conducted to investigate the mechanisms responsible for the observed surface pressure reductions. The passive control comes from placing a spanwise aligned cylinder in the boundary layer near the leading edge of the cavity. The two control configurations were isolated from previous experiments of the fluctuating surface pressure and correspond to a larger diameter rod near the top of the boundary layer and a smaller diameter rod placed near the wall. These were further analyzed using particle image velocimetry in an attempt to elicit the responsible mechanism for the flow control. The use of two-point statistics revealed the wall normal turbulent velocity correlation’s evolution became elongated in the wall normal direction. This suggests that the shear layer may be less-organized and consists of smaller-scale structures. The disturbance of the feedback receptivity loop is clearly demonstrated for the controlled configurations evidenced by weakened correlation signals between the aft wall sensor and positions on the cavity floor. The presence of the rod is shown to decrease the mean shear gradient, more effectively for the large rod placed at the top of the boundary layer, throughout the shear layer. The efficacy of the control leads to an initially thicker shear layer which spreads more rapidly and is clearly demonstrated by vorticity growth rates, mean, and turbulent flowfield statistics.  相似文献

Detonation in ducts is usually studied assuming adiabatic walls because of the high kinetic energy due to the incoming flow being supersonic. In the present work, numerical simulations of deflagration-to-detonation transition (DDT) using a detailed chemical reaction model are performed under adiabatic and isothermal boundary conditions in a tube with no-slip walls. The results show a local explosion driving DDT, which occurs near the tube wall in the case of an adiabatic wall, but close to the flame front in the case of an isothermal wall. Furthermore, to examine the effects of a turbulent boundary layer, a simulation using the Baldwin–Lomax turbulence model is carried out. In the case of the isothermal wall, there is again a local explosion near the tube wall, which leads to detonation. In summary, the present study confirms that the boundary conditions affect the transition to detonation and that the boundary layer is a key component of DDT.  相似文献

The present work is aimed to study mixed convection heat transfer characteristics for a lid-driven air flow within a square enclosure having a circular body. Flows are driven by the left lid, which slides in its own plane constant velocity. This wall is isothermal and it moves up or down in y direction while the other walls remain stationary. The horizontal walls are adiabatic. The cavity is differentially heated and the left wall is maintained at a higher temperature than the right wall. Three different temperature boundary conditions were applied for the inner cylinder as adiabatic, isothermal or conductive. The computation is carried out for wide ranges of Richardson numbers, diameter of inner cylinder and center and location of the inner cylinder. It was found that the most effective parameter on flow field and temperature distribution is the orientation of the moving lid. The circular body can be a control parameter for heat and fluid flow. An interesting obtained result that the thermal conductivity becomes insignificant for small values of diameter of the circular body.  相似文献

This paper describes a numerical method for the study of combined natural convection and radiation in a rectangular, two-dimensional cavity containing a non-participating (i.e. transparent) fluid. One wall of the cavity is isothermal, being heated either by solar radiation or independently. The opposite wall is partially transparent, permitting radiation exchanges between the cavity and its surroundings and/or the Sun; that wall also exchanges heat by convection from its external surface to the surroundings. The other two walls are adiabatic: convection and radiation there are balanced, so that there is no heat transfer through those walls. The equations of motion and energy are solved by finite difference methods. Coupled to these equations are the radiative flux boundary conditions which are used to determine the temperature distribution along the non-isothermal walls. A two-band radiation model has been employed. Results are presented for a square cavity with a vertical hot wall at 150 °C, the ambient at 20 °C and 104 ? Ra ? 3 × 105, in the absence of direct insolation. The effects on the flow and heat transfer in the cavity of radiation and external convection have been examined. More extensive results will be presented in subsequent papers.  相似文献

This work presents a numerical analysis of the effects of thermal boundary conditions, fluid variable viscosity and wall conduction on transient laminar natural convection of a high Prandtl number (Pr=4×104) fluid (Golden Syrup) in a cubical cavity. The simulations consider physical situations realizable at laboratory scale using a cavity with Plexiglas walls of 1 cm of thickness, and inside dimension of L=20 cm. The initial Rayleigh (Ra) number is 106. The cavity is initially full of fluid at rest and at constant temperature (T i =45°C) higher than the temperature of the walls (T w =25°C). The time evolution of the flow patterns, the temperature contours, the mean temperature of the fluid and the Nusselt number (Nu) of eight different cases of cooling are presented and analyzed.  相似文献

The objectives of this study are to investigate a thermal field in a turbulent boundary layer with suddenly changing wall thermal conditions by means of direct numerical simulation (DNS), and to evaluate predictions of a turbulence model in such a thermal field, in which DNS of spatially developing boundary layers with heat transfer can be conducted using the generation of turbulent inflow data as a method. In this study, two types of wall thermal condition are investigated using DNS and predicted by large eddy simulation (LES) and Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equation simulation (RANS). In the first case, the velocity boundary layer only develops in the entrance of simulation, and the flat plate is heated from the halfway point, i.e., the adiabatic wall condition is adopted in the entrance, and the entrance region of thermal field in turbulence is simulated. Then, the thermal boundary layer develops along a constant temperature wall followed by adiabatic wall. In the second case, velocity and thermal boundary layers simultaneously develop, and the wall thermal condition is changed from a constant temperature to an adiabatic wall in the downstream region. DNS results clearly show the statistics and structure of turbulent heat transfer in a constant temperature wall followed by an adiabatic wall. In the first case, the entrance region of thermal field in turbulence can be also observed. Thus, both the development and the entrance regions in thermal fields can be explored, and the effects upstream of the thermal field on the adiabatic region are investigated. On the other hand, evaluations of predictions by LES and RANS are conducted using DNS results. The predictions of both LES and RANS almost agree with the DNS results in both cases, but the predicted temperature variances near the wall by RANS give different results as compared with DNS. This is because the dissipation rate of temperature variance is difficult to predict by the present RANS, which is found by the evaluation using DNS results.  相似文献

Quasi-steady solidification between two vertical flat plates filled with a saturated porous medium has been investigated. The medium is homogeneous and isotropic. The convection flow of liquid takes place in the porous medium in the variable space between the two walls. One of the vertical walls is set to a temperature lower than the solidification temperature of the medium and therefore a frozen crust is formed on this wall. The second wall has a high temperature then the fusion temperature of the medium. The problem has been simplified by assuming laminar flow and the Brinkman and the Oberbeck–Bousinesq’s approximations. The results are presented in terms of the velocity for different properties of the porous medium. Various velocities are displayed in dependence of the Rayleigh and Darcy numbers. The study indicates that asymmetric boundary conditions have an important effect on the temperature and flow field. In addition, the growth of the thickness of the frozen layer with time has been derived from a simple analytical solution of the interface energy equation.  相似文献

The steady laminar boundary layer flow along a flat plate is studied taking into account the variation of fluid viscosity and fluid Prandtl number with temperature. In the forced convection case the plate moves with constant velocity and its temperature varies in power law with x. In the mixed convection case the plate temperature is constant and the fluid moves upwards due to an external free stream and due to buoyancy forces. The results are obtained with the direct numerical solution of the boundary layer equations. The study concerns the wall heat transfer, the wall shear stress and velocity and temperature profiles across the boundary layer. The results of the present work are different from those existing in the literature, which have been obtained with the assumption of constant Pr number.  相似文献

The effect of wall temperature variations on double diffusive natural convection of Al2O3–water nanofluid in a differentially heated square enclosure with constant temperature hot and cold vertical walls is studied numerically. Transport mechanisms of nanoparticles including Brownian diffusion and thermophoresis that cause heterogeneity are considered in non-homogeneous model. The hot and cold wall temperatures are varied, but the temperature difference between them is always maintained 5 °C. The thermophysical properties such as thermal conductivity, viscosity and density and thermophoresis diffusion and Brownian motion coefficients are considered variable with temperature and volume fraction of nanoparticles. The governing equations are discretized using the control volume method. The results show that nanoparticle transport mechanisms affect buoyancy force and cause formation of small vortexes near the top and bottom walls of the cavity and reduce the heat transfer. By increasing the temperature of the walls the effect of transport mechanisms decreases and due to enhanced convection the heat transfer rate increases.  相似文献

The linear stability of Walters B viscoelastic fluid-saturated horizontal porous layer is examined theoretically when the walls of the porous layer are subjected to time-periodic temperature modulation. Three types of boundary temperature modulations are considered namely, symmetric, asymmetric, and only the lower wall temperature is modulated while the upper wall is held at constant temperature. A regular perturbation method based on small amplitude of applied temperature field is used to compute the critical values of Rayleigh number and the corresponding wave number. The shift in critical Rayleigh number is calculated as a function of modulation frequency, viscoelastic parameter, and Prandtl number. The effect of all three types of modulations is found to be destabilizing as compared to the unmodulated system. This result is in contrast to the system with other types of fluids. Besides, the influence of physical parameters on the control of convective instability of the system is discussed.

An analysis is made of the steady two-dimensional stagnation-point flow of an incompressible viscoelastic fluid over a flat deformable surface when the surface is stretched in its own plane with a velocity proportional to the distance from the stagnation-point. It is shown that for a viscoelastic fluid of short memory (obeying Walters’ B′ model), a boundary layer is formed when the stretching velocity of the surface is less than the inviscid free-stream velocity and velocity at a point increases with increase in the elasticity of the fluid. On the other hand, an inverted boundary layer is formed when the surface stretching velocity exceeds the velocity of the free stream and the velocity decreases with increase in the elasticity of the fluid. A novel result of the analysis is that the flow near the stretching surface is that corresponding to an inviscid stagnation-point flow when the surface stretching velocity is equal to the velocity of the free stream. Temperature distribution in the boundary layer is found when the surface is held at constant temperature and surface heat flux is determined. It is found that temperature at a point decreases with increase in the elasticity of the fluid.  相似文献
