Using the connection between periodic complementary binary sequences and difference families given by Bömer and Antweiler [2], we use number theoretic techniques to obtain necessary conditions for their existence when two or three sequences are involved. Our results provide theoretical proof for the nonexistence of PCS3 20(a i) and settle the open case PCS2 36(a i) of [2], negatively.Research partially supported by National Security Agency grant #MDA 904-90-H-4008.  相似文献

We introduce a geometrical property of norm one complemented subspaces ofC(K) spaces which is useful for computing lower bounds on the norms of projections onto subspaces ofC(K) spaces. Loosely speaking, in the dual of such a space ifx* is a w* limit of a net (x a * ) andx*=x*1+x*2 with ‖x*‖=‖x*1‖ + ‖x*2‖, then we measure how efficiently thex a * 's can be split into two nets converging tox*1 andx*2, respectively. As applications of this idea we prove that if for everyε>0,X is a norm (1+ε) complemented subspace of aC(K) space, then it is norm one complemented in someC(K) space, and we give a simpler proof that a slight modification of anl 1-predual constructed by Benyamini and Lindenstrauss is not complemented in anyC(K) space. We revisit the boundedness of Hankel and Toeplitz operators acting on the Hardy space H 1 and give a new proof of the old result stating that the Hankel operator H a is bounded if and only if a has bounded logarithmic mean oscillation. We also establish a sufficient and necessary condition for H a to be compact on H 1. The Fredholm properties of Toeplitz operators on H 1 are studied for symbols in a Banach algebra similar to CH under mild additional conditions caused by the differences in the boundedness of Toeplitz operators acting on H 1 and H 2. We prove the convergence inL 1([−gp, π)2)-norm of the double Fourier series of an integrable functionf(x, y) which is periodic and even with respect tox andy, with coefficientsa jk satisfying certain conditions of Hardy-Karamata kind, and such thata jk logj logk→0 asj, k→∞. These sufficient conditions become quite natural in particular cases. Then we extend these results to the convergence of double Walsh-Fourier series inL 1 (0, 1)2)- norm. As a by-product, we obtain Tauberian conditions ensuring the convergence of a double numerical series provided it is Cesàro summable. Following Laczkovich we consider the partially ordered setB 1(ℝ) of Baire class 1 functions endowed with the pointwise order, and investigate the order types of the linearly ordered subsets. Answering a question of Komjáth and Kunen we show (inZFC) that special Aronszajn lines are embeddable intoB 1(ℝ). We also show that under Martin's Axiom a linearly ordered set ℒ with |ℒ| < 2ω is embeddable intoB 1(ℝ) iff ℒ does not contain a copy of ω1 or ω * 1 . We present aZFC example of a linear order of size 2ω showing that this characterisation is not valid for orders of size continuum. These results are obtained using the notion of a compact-special tree; that is, a tree that is embeddable into the class of compact subsets of the reals partially ordered under reverse inclusion. We investigate how this notion is related to the well-known notion of an ℝ-special tree and also to some other notions of specialness. We prove that there exist self-similar sets of zero Hausdorff measure, but positive and finite packing measure, in their dimension; for instance, for almost everyu ∈ [3, 6], the set of all sums ∑ 0 8 a n 4n a n 4n with digits witha n ∈ {0, 1,u} has this property. Perhaps surprisingly, this behavior is typical in various families of self-similar sets, e.g., for projections of certain planar self-similar sets to lines. We establish the Hausdorff measure result using special properties of self-similar sets, but the result on packing measure is obtained from a general complement to Marstrand’s projection theorem, that relates the Hausdorff measure of an arbitrary Borel set to the packing measure of its projections. LetE be a complex Banach space with open unit ballB e. The structure of the space of composition operators on the Banach algebra H∞, of bounded analytic functions onB e with the uniform topology, is studied. We prove that the composition operators arising from mappings whose range lies strictly insideB e form a path connected component. WhenE is a Hilbert space or aC o(X)- space, the path connected components are shown to be the open balls of radius 2. A hyperbolic linear Weingarten surface in ℝ3 is a surface M whose mean and Gaussian curvatures satisfy the relationship 2aH +bK = c for real numbers a, b, c such that a2+bc < 0. In this work we obtain a representation for such a surface in terms of its Gauss map when, more generally, a, b, c are functions on M. We also study the completeness of such surfaces and describe a procedure to construct complete examples from solutions of the sine-Gordon equation. We give a Fekete-Szeg? type inequality for an analytic function on the unit disk with Bloch seminorm ≤1. As an application of it, we derive a sharp inequality for the third coefficient of a uniformly locally univalent function f(z) = z + a 2 z 2 + a 3 z 3 + ⋯ on the unit disk with pre-Schwarzian norm ≤λ for a given λ > 0. This paper studies Hankel and Toeplitz operators on the Bergman spaceL a 1 () of bounded symmetric domains. These operators are defined in terms of a certain bounded projection onL 1(,dV). The main results of the paper include several characterizations for the boundedness and (weak-star) compactness of these Hankel-Toeplitz type operators. Via a series of orthogonal two-dimensional wavelets, an orthogonal decomposition of the space of square integral functions on U×U (U is the upper half-plane) with the measurey a 1 y a 1 dx 1 dx 2 dx 1 dx 2 is given. We study a certain class of von Neumann algebras generated by selfadjoint elements ωi=ai+ai+, where ai, ai+ satisfy the general commutation relations:We assume that operator T for which the constants are matrix coefficients satisfies the braid relation. Such algebras were investigated in [BSp] and [K] where the positivity of the Fock representation and factoriality were shown. In this paper we prove that T-Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroup UtT(et), t>0 arising from the second quantization procedure is hyper- and ultracontractive.
