Preface
<正>Professor Roger Temam is a world renowned applied mathematician. His first major contribution to science is his thesis (these d'etat) worked under the direction of the late Professor Jacque-Louis Lions on fractional step methods and their application to the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations (independently studied by Alexander Chorin).  相似文献

Max Dehn is famous for his contributions to group theory and topology, but almost half of his publications are on the foundations of geometry. In this article I hope to show that Dehn's interest in geometry was not misplaced, and that his contributions to it are also remarkable. First, let us survey Dehn's main contributions to geometry, in chronological order.  相似文献

This special issue of the Journal of Applied Analysis and Computation is dedicated to Claude-Michel Brauner on the occasion of his 70th birthday. Claude-Michel Brauner is Emeritus Professor at the university of Bordeaux (IMB) and was Professor at the School of Mathematical Sciences of Xiamen University for eight years. Furthermore, he is corresponding member of the SMAI (french SIAM) for China and has played a significant role in Sino-French cooperation in applied mathematics. In June 9-12, 2017 the Sino-French Conference on Modeling, Mathematical Analysis and Computation was held in Xiamen University to celebrate his 70th birthday. This volume gathers carefully selected contributions from invited speakers and participants of the conference; it reflects the large variety of the themes addressed during this event.  相似文献

1977 is the two hundredth anniversary of the death of Johann Heinrich Lambert, a little known but nonetheless intriguing figure in 18th century science. In the general histories of science and mathematics Lambert's contributions are often described piecemeal, with each discovery and invention usually divorced both from the method by which he arrived at it and from the totality of his intellectual endeavour. To the student of optics he is remembered for his cosine law in photometry, to the astronomer for his work on comets, to the meteorologist for his design of a gut hygrometer, and to the mathematician for his work on non-Euclidean geometry and his demonstration of the irrationality of π and e. There is no doubt that each of these contributions had a definite importance of its own; but it is not the aim of the present article to enumerate in this way the high points of Lambert's scientific and mathematical work, rather to describe it for once as a unified whole, and to relate it to the contemporary intellectual outlook.  相似文献

Hermann Minkowski’s approach to physics   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Hermann Minkowski’s contributions to relativity theory are extraordinary from a disciplinary standpoint, in that so few mathematicians in Wilhelmine Germany took an interest in theoretical physics. Based on correspondence, lectures, research notes and the accounts of his students and colleagues, Minkowski’s interest in mechanics and physics is retraced, from his early career to his discovery of spacetime.  相似文献

Little is known about William Wallace' work and even less about his attempts to introduce Continental calculus to Britain in the early 19th century. A letter written by him to George Peacock in 1833 reveals many interesting facts concerning his role in the reform of British mathematics. This paper presents a brief account of his life and work and the full text of the letter, and proposes that Wallace' contributions deserve to be acknowledged.  相似文献

This paper presents an axiomatization of the Shapley value. The balanced cycle contributions property is the key axiom in this paper. It requires that, for any order of all the players, the sum of the claims from each player against his predecessor is balanced with the sum of the claims from each player against his successor. This property is satisfied not only by the Shapley value but also by some other values for TU games. Hence, it is a less restrictive requirement than the balanced contributions property introduced by Myerson (International Journal of Game Theory 9, 169–182, 1980).  相似文献

Carlini's career was mainly dedicated to astronomy, but he was also a particularly skilled mathematician. In this article we collect and analyse his mathematical contributions in detail. In particular, in his important Memoir of the year 1817 devoted to Kepler's equation he introduced an innovative idea to solve ordinary differential equations with singular perturbations by means of asymptotic expansions. In the same Memoir also appeared, five years before Laplace's contributions, what is usually called the Laplace limit constant. Furthermore, Carlini published other mathematical Memoirs anticipating, 70 years in advance, the importance of complex branches of the Lambert's special function.  相似文献

Ali Fröhlich was one of the truly great mathematiciansof his generation. In addition to making fundamental contributions,he is one of the very few of whom it can be said, "he foundeda new subject": namely that area now known as Galois moduletheory. In addition to establishing a theoretical basis forthe subject, he also formulated some very deep and wonderfulconjectures that would thrust him onto the world's stage. Healso built up a school of researchers that played a centralpart in establishing British algebraic number theory as a worldforce. The outstanding nature of his contributions to mathematicswas recognised in 1992 when the London Mathematical Societyawarded him the De Morgan Medal: their highest and most distinguishedprize, which is awarded triennially.  相似文献

Louis C. Karpinski was best known for his publications on the history of mathematics, and secondarily as a historian of cartography. This survey of his life includes an account of his contributions to the teaching of mathematics and of his avocational interests as a collector, chess player, and gadfly attacking what he saw as poor thinking and abuses of power in both the universities and in the public domain. It is followed by a note on archives, a list of the Ph.D. theses he supervised, and a complete bibliography.  相似文献

You will not see Robert Patterson’s name mentioned in many mathematics books. While his mathematical works survive, his name is more likely to appear in American history books dealing with the Colonial period, given his associations with the most influential men of that time. In this article, we will examine his mathematical work, as well as his contributions to a newly-formed nation. Most of what we know about Robert Patterson’s ancestors and life is due to his grandson, William Ewing DuBois, who wrote a family history in 1847. For other information, I have drawn upon diaries and a great many letters. All spelling and syntax are copied exactly as they appear.  相似文献

In June 1958, Edward L Kaplan (1920–2006) and Paul Meier (1924–2011) published an innovative statistical method to estimate survival curves when including incomplete observations. The Kaplan–Meier (KM) method became the standard way of reporting patient survival in medical research. For example, the KM method is used in more than 70% of clinical oncology papers. With 44,319 Web of Science® citations as of November 2017, the report has become the most-cited statistics publication in the scientific literature. Part I of this report describes the KM method, its strengths and limitations, and the history and evolution of the method. In Part II we recount the biography of the remarkable mathematician Edward L Kaplan, PhD, and his unique contributions during the formulation of the KM method, as well as his contributions to science during his unique and productive career.  相似文献

Jean van Heijenoort was best known for his editorial work in the history of mathematical logic. I survey his contributions to model-theoretic proof theory, and in particular to the falsifiability tree method. This work of van Heijenoort??s is not widely known, and much of it remains unpublished. A complete list of van Heijenoort??s unpublished writings on tableaux methods and related work in proof theory is appended.  相似文献

This article pays tribute to the German mathematics educator Arnold Kirsch (1922–2013), especially for his contributions to calculus education. The main aim of his work was to make mathematics accessible to learners so that they are able to genuinely understand the subject.  相似文献
