A new scheme for a birefringent nonlinear polarization rotation mirror is proposed for pedestal suppression of ultrashort pulses. Environmentally stable and precisely controllable operation is demonstrated. The main pulse and pedestal components are separated and picked out from the different ports. By use of the soliton effect and nonlinear polarization rotation, almost transform-limited pedestal-free 318 and 143 fs ultrashort pulses with peak powers of 0.9 and 1.7 kW are successfully generated. The maximum pedestal-suppression ratio is 24 dB, and the pick-out efficiency is up to 46% including coupling loss. The characteristics are analyzed both experimentally and numerically.

The evolution of quasi-linear optical pulses in birefringent fibers, with strong dispersion-management, is studied analytically. The nonlinear terms of the Gabitov–Turitsyn equations (GTE) are analyzed asymptotically. The total spectral intensity, for a lossless system, is found to be an invariant of propagation, while for a lossy system it is dependent on the relative position of the amplifier in the dispersion map.OCIS Codes.

Nonlinear resonant optical rotation was studied over a wide range of experimental parameters at the Rb D 1 F = 2→F′ = 1 transition in the 87Rb vapor under conditions of coherent population trapping. The angle of rotation was found to depend nonmonotonically on the laser intensity and applied magnetic field. The effect of optical pumping out to the level F = 1 is discussed. It is demonstrated experimentally that the Faraday rotation angle increases twofold upon the compensation for pumping.

The phase-sensitive nature of polarization modulation instability has been demonstrated in optical fibers whose birefringence has been manipulated to generate phase mismatches. Quasi-phase-matched modulation instability has been demonstrated, and the gain of the quasi-phase-matched sidebands has been investigated. The results are in good agreement with experiment.

We propose a type of lossless nonlinear polarizer, novel to our knowledge, a device that transforms any input state of polarization (SOP) of a signal beam into one and the same well-defined SOP toward the output, and perform this without any polarization-dependent losses. At the polarizer output end, the signal SOP appears to be locked to the input pump SOP. The polarizer is based on the nonlinear Kerr interaction of copropagating signal and pump beams in a telecom or randomly birefringent optical fiber.

Second harmonic generation in optical fibers is investigated. A scheme to combine material, modal and geometrical dispersion to achieve phase matching is proposed. Conversion efficiency, as a function of the fiber's parameters and the incoming electric field strength, is computed.

We describe several new phase-matching processes for four-photon mixing in polarization-preserving birefringent fibers. The frequency shifts and polarization conditions of the waves involved in this nonlinear interaction are specified for a single-mode fused silica birefringent fiber. Our calculations include the effect of dispersion in the birefringence of the fibers.

We report experimental observation of nondegenerate four-photon mixing (FPM) via a new phase-matched process in birefringent fibers. This phase-matching process is characterized by relatively long coherence lengths, and by small pump-to-Stokes frequency shifts (of the order of 100 cm-1 in high birefringence fibers) that are directly proportional to the fiber birefringence. Pump-to-Stokes energy conversion efficiencies of over 40 percent have been obtained with moderate pump powers (≈1 kW) from a visible cw mode-locked dye laser coupled into single-mode polarization-preserving high-birefringence fibers of a few meters length. In addition, we report the first observation of a totally non-degenerate phase-matched four-photon process in a fiber; this invokes mixing of the original FPM Stokes component with the pump and stimulated Raman radiation.

We report on the implementation of intensity-dependent filter for picosecond pulse temporal cleaning based on an effect of pulse polarization rotation during the unbalanced phase matched second harmonic generation. The pulse contrast enhancement by more than two orders of magnitude and filter transmission of ∼25% has been demonstrated at pulse intensities of <1 GW/cm2. A simple and reliable all-solid-state filter scheme was integrated in a two-stage picosecond Nd:YAG regenerative amplifier seeded with pJ-energy femtosecond pulses of the Yb:KGW oscillator, and allowed us to reduce the ASE intensity level down to 1.5×10−8 with reference to the intensity of main 100 ps and 100 μJ pulse.

There has been much recent research into polarizing an antiproton beam, instigated by the recent proposal from the PAX (Polarized Antiproton eXperiment) project at GSI Darmstadt. It plans to polarize an antiproton beam by repeated interaction with a polarized internal target in a storage ring. The method of polarization by spin filtering requires many of the beam particles to remain within the ring after scattering off the polarized internal target via electromagnetic and hadronic interactions. We present and solve sets of differential equations which describe the buildup of polarization by spin filtering in many different scenarios of interest to projects planning to produce high-intensity polarized beams. These scenarios are: 1) spin filtering of a fully stored beam; 2) spin filtering while the beam is being accumulated, i.e. unpolarized particles are continuously being fed into the beam; 3) the particle input rate is equal to the rate at which particles are being lost due to scattering beyond the ring acceptance angle, the beam intensity remaining constant; 4) increasing the initial polarization of a stored beam by spin filtering; 5) the input of particles into the beam is stopped after a certain amount of time, but spin filtering continues. The rate of depolarization of a stored polarized beam on passing through an electron cooler is also shown to be negligible.

Novel effects resulting from joint action of chirality and non-linearity are discussed using a basic equation describing the temporal evolution of fields in a chiral medium with Kerr non-linearity. The spatial chirality effect is characterized through the Born-Fedorov formalism. Our simulations are based on the split-step Fourier method and the solution of the Stokes parameters. The numerical results show the chiral effect on solitons with circular polarization and mixed polarization spatial solitons.

Modulation instabilities in the randomly birefringent two-mode optical fibers(RB-TMFs) are analyzed in detail by accounting the effects of the differential mode group delay(DMGD) and group velocity dispersion(GVD) ratio between the two modes, both of which are absent in the randomly birefringent single-mode optical fibers(RB-SMFs). New MI characteristics are found in both normal and anomalous dispersion regimes. For the normal dispersion, without DMGD,no MI exists. With DMGD, a completely new MI band is generated as long as the total power is smaller than a critical total power value, named by Pcr, which increases significantly with the increment of DMGD, and reduces dramatically as GVD ratio and power ratio between the two modes increases. For the anomalous dispersion, there is one MI band without DMGD. In the presence of DMGD, the MI gain is reduced generally. On the other hand, there also exists a critical total power(Pcr), which increases(decreases) distinctly with the increment of DMGD(GVD ratio of the two modes) but varies complicatedly with the power ratio between the two modes. Two MI bands are present for total power smaller than Pcr, and the dominant band can be switched between the low and high frequency bands by adjusting the power ratio between the two modes. The MI analysis in this paper is verified by numerical simulation.

This paper studies the propagation of solitons through birefringent fibers in the presence of spatio-temporal dispersion. Both Kerr and parabolic laws of nonlinearity are addressed. The exact 1-soliton solutions are obtained. There are several constraint conditions that ensure soliton solutions are derived. Three types of solitons are obtained: bright, dark and singular solitons.

An all-optical wavelength converter, based on nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) in semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) and array waveguide grating (AWG) filtering, is experimentally demonstrated. The wavelength converter can provide excellent operation including extinction ratio and Q factor. The simultaneous two wavelength conversion outputs are successfully obtained at 20 Gb/s.

Theoretical and experimental results are presented that illustrate efficient generation of new optical frequencies by means of induced modulational instability in birefringent fibers for an initially highly phase-mismatched process. Modulational instability is assisted by multiple four-wave mixing interactions. This technique relaxes the strict spectral limitations imposed by the phase-matching conditions on the signal used for frequency conversion by means of modulational instability.
