The equation , , is studied in and in the periodic case. It is shown that the equation is well-posed in and possesses regularizing properties. For nonnegative initial data and the solution decays in as . In the periodic case it tends uniformly to a limit. A consistent difference scheme is presented and proved to be stable and convergent.

A nonempty bounded open set () is said to have the Pompeiu property if and only if the only continuous function on for which the integral of over is zero for all rigid motions of is . We consider a nonempty bounded open set with Lipschitz boundary and we assume that the complement of is connected. We show that the failure of the Pompeiu property for implies some geometric conditions. Using these conditions we prove that a special kind of solid tori in , , has the Pompeiu property. So far the result was proved only for solid tori in . We also examine the case of planar domains. Finally we extend the example of solid tori to domains in bounded by hypersurfaces of revolution.

Given an integer , let be the space of complete embedded singly periodic minimal surfaces in , which in the quotient have genus zero and Scherk-type ends. Surfaces in can be proven to be proper, a condition under which the asymptotic geometry of the surfaces is well known. It is also known that consists of the -parameter family of singly periodic Scherk minimal surfaces. We prove that for each , there exists a natural one-to-one correspondence between and the space of convex unitary nonspecial polygons through the map which assigns to each the polygon whose edges are the flux vectors at the ends of (a special polygon is a parallelogram with two sides of length and two sides of length ). As consequence, reduces to the saddle towers constructed by Karcher.

Genus zero Willmore surfaces immersed in the three-sphere correspond via the stereographic projection to minimal surfaces in Euclidean three-space with finite total curvature and embedded planar ends. The critical values of the Willmore functional are , where , with . When the ambient space is the four-sphere , the regular homotopy class of immersions of the two-sphere is determined by the self-intersection number ; here we shall prove that the possible critical values are , where . Moreover, if , the corresponding immersion, or its antipodal, is obtained, via the twistor Penrose fibration , from a rational curve in and, if , via stereographic projection, from a minimal surface in with finite total curvature and embedded planar ends. An immersion lies in both families when the rational curve is contained in some or (equivalently) when the minimal surface of is complex with respect to a suitable complex structure of .

We give a sufficient condition for a codimension one, transversely orientable foliation of a closed 3-manifold to have the property that any foliation sufficiently close to it be -covered. This condition can be readily verified for many examples. Further, if an -covered foliation has a compact leaf , then any transverse loop meeting lifts to a copy of the leaf space, and the ambient manifold fibers over with as fiber.

Let be a finite field, the degree extension of , and the general linear group with entries in . This paper studies the ``generalized Steinberg" (GS) representations of and proves the equivalence of several different characterizations for this class of representations. As our main result we show that the union of the class of cuspidal and GS representations of is in natural one-one correspondence with the set of Galois orbits of characters of , the regular orbits of course corresponding to the cuspidal representations. Besides using Green's character formulas to define GS representations, we characterize GS representations by associating to them idempotents in certain commuting algebras corresponding to parabolic inductions and by showing that GS representations are the sole components of these induced representations which are ``generic" (have Whittaker vectors).

We consider tight closure, plus closure and Frobenius closure in the rings , where is a field of characteristic and . We use a -grading of these rings to reduce questions about ideals in the quotient rings to questions about ideals in the regular ring . We show that Frobenius closure is the same as tight closure in certain classes of ideals when . Since , we conclude that for these ideals. Using injective modules over the ring , the union of all th roots of elements of , we reduce the question of whether for -graded ideals to the case of -graded irreducible modules. We classify the irreducible -primary -graded ideals. We then show that for most irreducible -primary -graded ideals in , where is a field of characteristic and . Hence for these ideals.

Let and let be a compact set of scalars. We introduce property of Banach spaces by the requirement that whenever is a bounded net converging weak to in and . Using with 1$">, we characterize the existence of certain shrinking approximations of the identity (in particular, those related to -, -, and -ideals of compact or approximable operators). We also show that the existence of these approximations of the identity is separably determined.

Let be an open subset of a locally compact metric ANR and let be a continuous map. In this paper we study the fixed point index of the map that induces in the -symmetric product of , . This index can detect the existence of periodic orbits of period of , and it can be used to obtain the Euler characteristic of the -symmetric product of a manifold , . We compute for all orientable compact surfaces without boundary.

Let be a complete discrete valuation domain with the unique maximal ideal . We suppose that is an algebra over an algebraically closed field and . Subamalgam -suborders of a tiled -order are studied in the paper by means of the integral Tits quadratic form . A discrete subset of is said to be tame if there is an automorphism of taking the given discrete subset to a subset of a complex line; such tame sets are known to allow interpolation by automorphisms. We give here a fairly general sufficient condition for a discrete set to be tame. In a related direction, we show that for certain discrete sets in there is an injective holomorphic map from into itself whose image avoids an -neighborhood of the discrete set. Among other things, this is used to show that, given any complex -torus and any finite set in this torus, there exist an open set containing the finite set and a locally biholomorphic map from into the complement of this open set.

Let be a compact connected Lie group, and a Hamiltonian -space with proper moment map . We give a surjectivity result which expresses the -theory of the symplectic quotient in terms of the equivariant -theory of the original manifold , under certain technical conditions on . This result is a natural -theoretic analogue of the Kirwan surjectivity theorem in symplectic geometry. The main technical tool is the -theoretic Atiyah-Bott lemma, which plays a fundamental role in the symplectic geometry of Hamiltonian -spaces. We discuss this lemma in detail and highlight the differences between the -theory and rational cohomology versions of this lemma.

We also introduce a -theoretic version of equivariant formality and prove that when the fundamental group of is torsion-free, every compact Hamiltonian -space is equivariantly formal. Under these conditions, the forgetful map is surjective, and thus every complex vector bundle admits a stable equivariant structure. Furthermore, by considering complex line bundles, we show that every integral cohomology class in admits an equivariant extension in .

An invariant inner product on the Lie algebra of a compact connected Lie group extends to a Hermitian inner product on the Lie algebra of the complexified Lie group . In Gindikin and Matsuki 2003, we defined a - invariant subset of for each -orbit on every flag manifold and conjectured that the connected component of the identity would be equal to the Akhiezer-Gindikin domain if is of nonholomorphic type. This conjecture was proved for closed in Wolf and Zierau 2000 and 2003, Fels and Huckleberry 2005, and Matsuki 2006 and for open in Matsuki 2006. It was proved for the other orbits in Matsuki 2006, when is of non-Hermitian type. In this paper, we prove the conjecture for an arbitrary non-closed -orbit when is of Hermitian type. Thus the conjecture is completely solved affirmatively.

We show that the expressive power of first-order logic over finite models embedded in a model is determined by stability-theoretic properties of . In particular, we show that if is stable, then every class of finite structures that can be defined by embedding the structures in , can be defined in pure first-order logic. We also show that if does not have the independence property, then any class of finite structures that can be defined by embedding the structures in , can be defined in first-order logic over a dense linear order. This extends known results on the definability of classes of finite structures and ordered finite structures in the setting of embedded finite models. These results depend on several results in infinite model theory. Let be a set of indiscernibles in a model and suppose is elementarily equivalent to where is -saturated. If is stable and is saturated, then every permutation of extends to an automorphism of and the theory of is stable. Let be a sequence of -indiscernibles in a model , which does not have the independence property, and suppose is elementarily equivalent to where is a complete dense linear order and is -saturated. Then -types over are order-definable and if is -saturated, every order preserving permutation of can be extended to a back-and-forth system.
