Network DEA: A slacks-based measure approach   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Traditional DEA models deal with measurements of relative efficiency of DMUs regarding multiple-inputs vs. multiple-outputs. One of the drawbacks of these models is the neglect of intermediate products or linking activities. After pointing out needs for inclusion of them to DEA models, we propose a slacks-based network DEA model, called Network SBM, that can deal with intermediate products formally. Using this model we can evaluate divisional efficiencies along with the overall efficiency of decision making units (DMUs).  相似文献

Directional distance functions and slacks-based measures of efficiency   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In this paper we introduce a SBM (slacks-based measure) of efficiency based on directional distance functions. This measure is contrasted with the SBM due to Professor Tone [Tone, K., 2001. A slacks-based measure of efficiency in data envelopment analysis. European Journal of Operational Research 130, 498–509].  相似文献

A slacks-based measure of efficiency in data envelopment analysis   总被引:74,自引:0,他引:74
In this paper, we will propose a slacks-based measure (SBM) of efficiency in Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). This scalar measure deals directly with the input excesses and the output shortfalls of the decision making unit (DMU) concerned. It is units invariant and monotone decreasing with respect to input excess and output shortfall. Furthermore, this measure is determined only by consulting the reference-set of the DMU and is not affected by statistics over the whole data set. The new measure has a close connection with other measures proposed so far, e.g., Charnes–Cooper–Rhodes (CCR), Banker–Charnes–Cooper (BCC) and the Russell measure of efficiency. The dual side of this model can be interpreted as profit maximization, in contrast to the ratio maximization of the CCR model. Numerical experiments show its validity as an efficiency measurement tool and its compatibility with other measures of efficiency.  相似文献

Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is a nonparametric method for measuring the efficiency of a set of decision making units such as firms or public sector agencies, first introduced into the operational research and management science literature by Charnes, Cooper, and Rhodes (CCR) [Charnes, A., Cooper, W.W., Rhodes, E., 1978. Measuring the efficiency of decision making units. European Journal of Operational Research 2, 429–444]. The original DEA models were applicable only to technologies characterized by positive inputs/outputs. In subsequent literature there have been various approaches to enable DEA to deal with negative data.  相似文献

Additive efficiency decomposition in two-stage DEA   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Kao and Hwang (2008) [Kao, C., Hwang, S.-N., 2008. Efficiency decomposition in two-stage data envelopment analysis: An application to non-life insurance companies in Taiwan. European Journal of Operational Research 185 (1), 418–429] develop a data envelopment analysis (DEA) approach for measuring efficiency of decision processes which can be divided into two stages. The first stage uses inputs to generate outputs which become the inputs to the second stage. The first stage outputs are referred to as intermediate measures. The second stage then uses these intermediate measures to produce outputs. Kao and Huang represent the efficiency of the overall process as the product of the efficiencies of the two stages. A major limitation of this model is its applicability to only constant returns to scale (CRS) situations. The current paper develops an additive efficiency decomposition approach wherein the overall efficiency is expressed as a (weighted) sum of the efficiencies of the individual stages. This approach can be applied under both CRS and variable returns to scale (VRS) assumptions. The case of Taiwanese non-life insurance companies is revisited using this newly developed approach.  相似文献

Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is commonly employed to evaluate the efficiency performance of a decision making unit (DMU) that transforms exogenous inputs into final outputs. In such a black-box DEA approach, details of an internal production process of the DMU are typically ignored and hence the locations of inefficiency are not adequately provided. In view of this, DEA researchers have recently developed various network approaches by looking into the black box, where the inputs that enter the box and the outputs that come out of it are only considered. However, most of these network approaches evaluate divisional efficiency by using an optimal solution of their respective optimization problem. If such an optimal solution is used in the case when there are multiple optima, then managerial guidance based on this solution alone may be inappropriate because more appropriate targets from the viewpoint of management may be ignored. Taking this fact into account, therefore, we propose a network approach for identifying the efficiency status of each DMU and its divisions. This approach provides a practical computational procedure.  相似文献

Bridging radial and non-radial measures of efficiency in DEA   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Data envelopment analysis (DEA) has been utilized worldwide for measuring efficiencies of banks, telecommunications, electric utilities and so forth. Yet, the existing models have some well-known shortcomings that limit their usefulness. In DEA we have two fundamental approaches to measuring efficiency with very different characteristics; radial and non-radial. We demonstrate a method for linking these two approaches in a unified framework called Connected-SBM (slacks-based measure). It includes two scalar parameters, and by changing the parameter values we can relocate the analysis anywhere between the radial and the non-radial models. An appropriate choice of these parameters can overcome the key shortcomings inherent in the two approaches, namely, proportionality and mixed patterns of slacks.  相似文献

A 2010 paper by Kaoru Tone proposes four variants of the slacks-based measure of efficiency (SBM) to overcome the limitations of this well-known Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) approach when the reference points of the efficient frontier may not be adequate. In this study, we apply these variants for the first time to a real-world problem to evaluate the efficiency of one of the most relevant decisions in pension fund management: The strategic asset allocation. The results highlight the relevance of SBM Variation III, which considers clusters of portfolios with similar characteristics, to appropriately identify the reference set of each portfolio. Therefore, this variant allows for the identification of locally efficient but globally inefficient portfolios. Our results also reject the notion of a positive relation between management resources and efficiency of the strategic investment style.  相似文献

In aggregation for data envelopment analysis (DEA), a jointly measured efficiency score among inputs and outputs is desirable in performance analysis. A separate treatment between output-oriented efficiency and input-oriented efficiency is often needed in the conventional radial DEA models. Such radial measures usually need to measure both that a current performance attains an efficiency frontier and that all the slacks are zero on optimality. In the analytical framework of the radial measure, Russell measure is proposed to deal with such a difficulty. A major difficulty associated with the Russell measure is that it is modeled by a nonlinear programming formulation. Hence, a conventional linear programming algorithm, usually applied for DEA, cannot solve the Russell measure. This study newly proposes a reformulation of the Russell measure by a second-order cone programming (SOCP) model and applies the primal–dual interior point algorithm to solve the Russell measure.  相似文献

Data envelopment analysis (DEA) has proven to be a useful tool for assessing efficiency or productivity of organizations which is of vital practical importance in managerial decision making. While DEA assumes exact input and output data, the development of imprecise DEA (IDEA) broadens the scope of applications to efficiency evaluations involving imprecise information which implies various forms of ordinal and bounded data possibly or often occurring in practice. The primary purpose of this article is to characterize the variable efficiency in IDEA. Since DEA describes a pair of primal and dual models, also called envelopment and multiplier models, we can basically consider two IDEA models: One incorporates imprecise data into envelopment model and the other includes the same imprecise data in multiplier model. The issues of rising importance are thus the relationships between the two models and how to solve them. The groundwork we will make includes a duality study, which makes it possible to characterize the efficiency solutions from the two models and link with the efficiency bounds and classifications that some of the published IDEA studies have done. The other purposes are to present computational aspects of the efficiency bounds and how to interpret the efficiency solutions. The computational method developed here extends the previous IDEA method to effectively incorporate a more general form of strict ordinal data and partial orders in its framework, which in turn overcomes some drawbacks of the previous approaches. The interpretation of the resulting efficiency is also important but we have never seen it before.  相似文献

This paper investigates cost, technical and allocative efficiencies for Brazilian banks in the recent period (2000–2007). We use Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to compute efficiency scores. Brazilian banks were found to have low levels of economic (cost) efficiency compared to banks in Europe and in the US. For the period with high macroeconomic volatility (2000–2002) the economic inefficiency in Brazilian banks can be attributed mainly to technical inefficiency rather than allocative inefficiency. State-owned banks are significantly more cost efficient than foreign, private domestic and private with foreign participation. There is no evidence of differences in economic efficiency due to type of activity and bank size. These results may provide some useful guidance for financial regulators and bank managers.  相似文献

The following is clearly equivalent to the usual definition of FC-group. A group is an FC-group, if each of its cyclic subgroups has only finitely many conjugates. We consider several weaker conditions on the conjugates of cyclic subgroups, the strongest of which we show is equivalent to the FC-condition for many classes of groups.  相似文献

In many real world applications where DEA is applied, DMUs can often be put into groups, such as those which may be under a single management team. This often means that the multipliers used within a group should be common across that group’s members. The case example examined in this regard is one involving a set of power plants, with each containing a set of power units under a common plant management. We develop a goal-programming model for this setting that seeks to derive such a common-multiplier set. The important feature of this multiplier set is that it minimizes the maximum discrepancy among the within-group scores from their ideal levels.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose a new approach to deal with the non-zero slacks in data envelopment analysis (DEA) assessments that is based on restricting the multipliers in the dual multiplier formulation of the used DEA model. It guarantees strictly positive weights, which ensures reference points on the Pareto-efficient frontier, and consequently, zero slacks. We follow a two-step procedure which, after specifying some weight bounds, results in an “Assurance Region”-type model that will be used in the assessment of the efficiency. The specification of these bounds is based on a selection criterion among the optimal solutions for the multipliers of the unbounded DEA models that tries to avoid the extreme dissimilarity between the weights that is often found in DEA applications. The models developed do not have infeasibility problems and we do not have problems with the alternate optima in the choice of weights that is made. To use our multiplier bound approach we do not need a priori information about substitutions between inputs and outputs, and it is not required the existence of full dimensional efficient facets on the frontier either, as is the case of other existing approaches that address this problem.  相似文献

Data envelopment analysis (DEA) has been proven as an excellent data-oriented performance evaluation method when multiple inputs and outputs are present in a set of peer decision-making units (DMUs). Several efficiency measures have been proposed in the DEA literature, see, for instances, radial efficiency measure of Charnes et al. (CCR)(A. Charnes. W.W. Cooper, and E. Rhodes, 1978. Measuring the efficiency of decision making units. Eur. J. Oper. Res. 2, 429–444), Russell graph measure (J.T. Russell, and R. Sirvant. 1999. An enhanced DEA Russell graph efficiency measure. Eur. J. Oper. Res. 115, pp. 596–607) and slack-based measure of Tone (K. Tone, 2001. A slack-based measure of efficiency in DEA. Eur. J. Oper. Res. 130, p. 498–509). In this article, we will propose an Euclidean distance-based measure of efficiency. Then, in order to discriminate the performance of efficient DMUs, an alternative super-efficiency DEA model is proposed. The applicability of the models developed is illustrated in the context of the analysis of gas companies performance.
