Natural convection heat transfer in an inclined fin attached square enclosure is studied both experimentally and numerically. Bottom wall of enclosure has higher temperature than that of top wall while vertical walls are adiabatic. Inclined fin has also adiabatic boundary conditions. Numerical solutions have been done by writing a computer code in Fortran platform and results are compared with Fluent commercial code and experimental method. Governing parameters are Rayleigh numbers (8.105 ≤ Ra ≤ 4 × 106) and inclination angle (30° ≤ and ≤ 120°). The temperature measurements are done by using thermocouples distributed uniformly at the wall of the enclosure. Remarkably good agreement is obtained between the predicted results and experimental data. A correlation is also developed including all effective parameters on heat transfer and fluid flow. It was observed that heat transfer can be controlled by attaching an inclined fin onto wall.  相似文献

A numerical study has been carried out on inclined open shallow cavities, which are formed by a wall and horizontal fins. Constant heat flux is applied on the surface of the wall inside the cavity while its other surface was kept isothermal. The wall and the fins are conductive. Conjugate heat transfer by natural convection and conduction is studied by numerically solving equations of mass, momentum and energy. Streamlines and isotherms are produced, heat and mass transfer is calculated. A parametric study is carried out using following parameters: Rayleigh number from 106 to 1012, conductivity ratio from 1 to 60, open cavity aspect ratio from 1 to 0.125, dimensionless end wall thickness from 0.05 to 0.20, horizontal walls from 0.01 to 0.15 and inclination of the end wall from 90° to 45°. It is found that the volume flow rate and Nusselt number are a decreasing function of the cavity aspect ratio, horizontal fin thickness and conductivity ratio. They are an increasing function of end wall thickness and inclination angle, except in the latter case optima exist at high Rayleigh numbers.  相似文献

Effects of a conductive wall on natural convection in a square porous enclosure having internal heating at a rate proportional to a power of temperature difference is studied numerically in this article. The horizontal heating is considered, where the vertical walls heated isothermally at different temperatures while the horizontal walls are kept adiabatic. The Darcy model is used in the mathematical formulation for the porous layer and finite difference method is applied to solve the dimensionless governing equations. The governing parameters considered are the Rayleigh number (0 ???Ra ???1000), the internal heating and the local exponent parameters (0 ????? ???5), (1 ????? ???3), the wall to porous thermal conductivity ratio (0.44 ???Kr ???9.9) and the ratio of wall thickness to its width (0.02 ???D ???0.5). The results are presented to show the effect of these parameters on the fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics. It is found a strong internal heating can generate significant maximum fluid temperature more than the conductive solid wall. Increasing value thermal conductivity ratio and/or decreasing the thickness of solid wall can increase the maximum fluid temperature. It is also found that at very low Rayleigh number, the heat transfer across the porous enclosure remain stable for any values of the thermal conductivity ratio.  相似文献

Steady state two-dimensional free convection heat transfer from a horizontal, isothermal fin attached cylinder, located between nearly two adiabatic walls is studied experimentally using a Mach–Zehnder interferometer. Effects of the walls inclination angel (θ) on heat transfer from the cylinder is investigated for Rayleigh number ranging from 1000 to 15,500. Two cylinders with different diameters of D = 10 and 20 mm are used to cover wide Rayleigh range. Results indicate that, heat transfer phenomena differ for different Rayleigh number. For Rayleigh numbers lower than 5500, heat transfer rate from cylinder surface is lower than the heat transfer from a single cylinder. In this range by the use of walls, heat transfer from the cylinder decreases slightly and walls’ inclination does not change heat transfer rate from the cylinder surface. For Rayleigh number ranging from 5500 to 15,500, amount of heat transfer from the cylinder surface is less than that of a single cylinder. However, by adding nearly adiabatic walls to experimental model heat transfer mechanism differs and chimney effect between fin and walls increases the heat transfer rate from the cylinder surface. By increasing the walls inclination angel from 0° to 20°, the chimney effect between walls and fin diminishes and heat transfer rate from the cylinder surface is approaching to the heat transfer rate of fin attached cylinder without adiabatic walls.  相似文献

Conjugate natural convection-conduction heat transfer in a square porous enclosure with a finite-wall thickness is studied numerically in this article. The bottom wall is heated and the upper wall is cooled while the verticals walls are kept adiabatic. The Darcy model is used in the mathematical formulation for the porous layer and the COMSOL Multiphysics software is applied to solve the dimensionless governing equations. The governing parameters considered are the Rayleigh number (100 ≤ Ra ≤ 1000), the wall to porous thermal conductivity ratio (0.44 ≤ K r ≤ 9.90) and the ratio of wall thickness to its height (0.02 ≤ D ≤ 0.4). The results are presented to show the effect of these parameters on the heat transfer and fluid flow characteristics. It is found that the number of contrarotative cells and the strength circulation of each cell can be controlled by the thickness of the bottom wall, the thermal conductivity ratio and the Rayleigh number. It is also observed that increasing either the Rayleigh number or the thermal conductivity ratio or both, and decreasing the thickness of the bounded wall can increase the average Nusselt number for the porous enclosure.  相似文献

Enhancement of heat transfer to the fluid can be done by turbulence promoters such as attached fins to the pipe walls. In this study, the flow field and the heat transfer rates were numerically investigated in a pipe with an internally attached fin. Numerical simulations were conducted for four different types of fluids and for different fin heights and locations, and as the Reynolds number was varied, the effects of the fin on Nusselt number and friction factors were investigated. For all the Reynolds numbers considered in this study, the effect of fin location on the heat transfer rate and friction factor was negligible. As the fin height was increased, the mean Nusselt number and the friction factor also increased in the turbulent flow regimes. For low Prandtl number fluids (Pr = 0.011), the main heat transfer mode is conduction, and hence the mean Nusselt number slightly affected the flow rates.  相似文献

The main objective of this article is to study the effect of discrete heating on free convection heat transfer in a rectangular porous enclosure containing a heat-generating substance. The left wall of the enclosure has two discrete heat sources and the right wall is isothermally cooled at a lower temperature. The top and bottom walls, and the unheated portions of the left wall are adiabatic. The vorticity–stream function formulation of the governing equations is numerically solved using an implicit finite difference method. The effects of aspect ratio, Darcy number, heat source length, and modified Rayleigh number on the flow and heat transfer are analyzed. The numerical results reveal that the rate of heat transfer increases as the modified Rayleigh number and the Darcy number increases, but decreases on increasing the aspect ratio. The average heat transfer rate is found to be higher at the bottom heater than at the top heater in almost all considered parameter cases except for ε = 0.5. Also, the maximum temperature takes place generally at the top heater except for the case ε = 0.5, where the maximum temperature is found at the bottom heater. Further, the numerical results reveal that the maximum temperature decreases with the modified Rayleigh number and increases with the aspect ratio.  相似文献

Detailed numerical analysis is presented for buoyancy driven flow of a Newtonian fluid contained in a square enclosure for high Rayleigh (Ra) numbers. Natural convection is due to internal heating sources, which are assumed to be uniformly distributed within the enclosure. All walls of the cavity are maintained at constant temperature. Flow and heat transfer characteristics are investigated for a Ra number range of 107 to 1012 while Prandtl (Pr) number is taken to be 7.0. Governing equations (in primitive variables) are discretised using control volume technique based on staggered grid formulation. These equations are solved using SIMPLER algorithm of Patankar. Flow and heat transfer characteristics, streamlines, isotherms and average wall Nusselt (Nu) number, are presented for whole range of Ra number considered. Finally, present results for average wall Nu numbers are compared with experimental observations obtained from open literature. It is concluded that both results are in very good agreement, which confirmed the accuracy of the scaling used for present investigation. Received on 15 November 1999  相似文献

Differentially heated enclosure with heat-generating porous layer on inner walls is studied computationally for non-Darcy flow and thermal non-equilibrium models. In this study, this problem is investigated for different internal and external Rayleigh numbers, Darcy numbers, porosity-scaled thermal conductivity ratio, solid-/fluid-scaled heat transfer coefficient and dimensionless thickness of the porous layer. The results indicate that the dimensionless thickness of the porous layer has an important effect on the heat transfer in the enclosure. It was found that the thermal non-equilibrium model is needed for small values of the porosity-scaled thermal conductivity ratio and the solid-/fluid-scaled heat transfer coefficient. It is shown that the convection of heat due to internal heat generation is increased in the enclosure when the ratio of internal Rayleigh number to external Rayleigh number is larger.  相似文献

Rectangular aluminium fins were preferred for analysis and coated by carbon nano tubes using PVD to enhance the heat transfer rate of fins. Convective heat transfer rates for coated and non-coated surfaces were calculated and compared. The temperature and heat transfer characteristics were investigated using Nusselt, Grashof, Prandtl and Rayleigh numbers and also optimized by Taguchi method and ANOVA analysis. The average percentage of increase in fin efficiency is 5 %.  相似文献

This study looks at MHD natural convection flow and heat transfer in a laterally heated enclosure with an off-centred partition. Governing equations in the form of vorticity–stream function formulation are solved using the polynomial differential quadrature (PDQ) method. Numerical results are obtained for various values of the partition location, Rayleigh, Prandtl and Hartmann numbers. The results indicate that magnetic field significantly suppresses flow, and thus heat transfer, especially for high Rayleigh number values. The results also show that the x-directional magnetic field is more effective in damping convection than the y-directional magnetic field, and the average heat transfer rate decreases with an increase in the distance of the partition from the hot wall. The average heat transfer rate decreases up to 80% if the partition is placed at the midpoint and an x-directional magnetic field is applied. The results also show that flow and heat transfer have little dependence on the Prandtl number.  相似文献

This paper presents the analysis of heat transfer in a partially wet annular fin assembly during the process of dehumidification. In past studies, both fully dry and fully wet fins have been analyzed. New analytical formulation leading to a closed-form solution has been developed for a partially wet fin, which is most common in dehumidifier coil operation during air conditioning. The parameters that influenced the heat transfer rate in the finned tube structure are ratio of fin and wall thermal conductivities, ratio of fin thickness to fin pitch, ratio of wall thickness to fin pitch, ratio of fin length to fin pitch, cold fluid Biot number, ambient Biot number, the relative humidity and dry bulb temperature of the incoming air, and the cold fluid temperature inside the coil. Calculations were carried out to study the performance of the heat exchanger. The computed results included the temperature distribution in the wall and the fin and the fin efficiency.  相似文献

The natural convection heat transfer in inclined rectangular enclosures with perfectly conducting fins attached to the heated wall is numerically studied. The parameters governing this problem are the Rayleigh number (102Ra≤2×105), the aspect ratio of the enclosures (2.5≤A=H′/L′≤∞), the dimensionless lengths of the partitions (0≤B=?′/L′≤1), the aspect ratio of micro-cavities (AC=h′/L′≤0.33), the inclination angle (0≤φ≤60°) and the Prandtl number (Pr=0.72). The results indicate that the heat transfer through the cover is considerably affected by the presence of the fins. At low Rayleigh numbers, the heat transfer regime is dominated by conduction. When B≈0.75 and C≈0.33, the heat transfer through the cold wall decreases considerably. This trend is enhanced when the enclosure is inclined. Useful engineering correlations are derived for practical applications.  相似文献

Experimental measurements of heat transfer by free convection in a cylindrical waterfilled enclosure from a horizontal finned tube of small fin height is reported. The measured heat transfers are presented in form of correlation equationsNu=f(Ra). The Rayleigh numbers have been alternatively defined with the annulus height, core diameter and an equivalent diameter defined for the finned tube. The correlation equations have been formulated for heat transfer (i) in an infinite medium and (ii) in an annulus. Results show that for the experimental annulus gap/enclosure diameter ratio of 24.66 and 40.74, the heat transfer analysis based on infinite medium assumption shows a somewhat better correlation although the influence of the enclosure cannot be completely neglected. Defining the Rayleigh number with an equivalent diameter makes it possible to compare the experimental measurements with those from a smooth tube.  相似文献

This paper inquires the effectiveness of a PCM-based heat sink as a reliable solution to portable electronic devices. This sink is composed of a PCM with low thermal conductivity and fins to boost its conductivity. The optimization is subjected to fixed heat sink volume filled with PCM between vertical equidistant fins. New fins are installed in the unheated space existing in each enclosure which is not involved in thermal distribution from vertical fins to the PCM. Based on the same principle, new fins generations are augmented stepwise to the multi-scale structure. The steps of adding fins will continue up to the point that the objective function reaches its maximal value, i.e., maximizing the longest safe operation time without allowing the electronics to reach the critical temperature. The results indicate that in each length of the enclosure, the optimum volume fraction and the best fins distance values exist in which the heat sink performance becomes maximum, and adding more fins lowers the performance of the heat sink. Increasing the enclosure’s length by \(2^{n}\) does not change them. For an enclosure with constant length, the optimal number of steps for adding fins within the enclosure is a function of the fin thickness. The results indicate that increasing the thickness changes the optimal number of adding fins inside the enclosure (normally a decrease). As the fin thickness is lowered, there will be a higher effect by adding vertical fins in the enclosure. Numerical simulations cover the Rayleigh number range \(2\times 10^{5}\le \hbox {Ra}_{\mathrm{H}} \le 2.7\times 10^{8}\), where H is the heat sink height.  相似文献

The problem of natural convection in an inclined rectangular porous layer enclosure is studied numerically. The enclosure is heated from one side and cooled from the other by a constant heat flux while the two other walls are insulated. The effect of aspect ratio, inclination angle and Rayleigh number on heat transfer is studied. It is found that the enclosure orientation has a considerable effect on the heat transfer. The negative orientation sharply inhibits the convection and consequently the heat transfer and a positive orientation maximizes the energy transfer. The maximum temperature within the porous medium can be considerably higher than that induced by pure conduction when the cavity is negatively oriented. The peak of the average Nusselt number depends on the Rayleigh number and the aspect ratio. The heat transfer between the two thermally active boundaries is sensitive to the effect of aspect ratio. For an enclosure at high or low aspect ratio, the convection is considerably decreased and the heat transfer depends mainly on conduction.  相似文献

The local and average heat transfer characteristics of spoke like fins that extend outward from a rotating shaft have been determined experimentally. The experiments encompassed a number of geometrical parameters, including the length and chord of the fins, the number of fins deployed around the circumference of the shaft and the orientation angles of the fin. The experiments cover a wider range of rotational speeds, which varies from 25 up to 2,000 rpm. Three wire heat flux sensors have been used in conjunction with a slip ring apparatus to evaluate the local and average heat transfer coefficients. The output results indicated that, the heat transfer transition on rotating fins occurs at Reynolds number lower than encountered on the stationary rectangular fins in crossflow. In general, with non zero incidence angle, the rotating system acts as a fan and creates axial air motion, which enhance the heat transfer rate. However, the effect of orientation angle reduces with increasing the rotational speed. The Nusselt number data are independent of the number of fins in the circumferential array at high rotational speed and are weakly dependent at low Reynolds numbers. To facilitate the use of the results for design, correlations were developed which represent the fin heat transfer coefficient as a continuous function of the investigated independent parameters.  相似文献

This article presents a numerical study of natural convection cooling of a heat source embedded on the bottom wall of an enclosure filled with nanofluids. The top and vertical walls of the enclosure are maintained at a relatively low temperature. The transport equations for a Newtonian fluid are solved numerically with a finite volume approach using the SIMPLE algorithm. The influence of pertinent parameters such as Rayleigh number, location and geometry of the heat source, the type of nanofluid and solid volume fraction of nanoparticles on the cooling performance is studied. The results indicate that adding nanoparticles into pure water improves its cooling performance especially at low Rayleigh numbers. The type of nanoparticles and the length and location of the heat source proved to significantly affect the heat source maximum temperature.  相似文献

We consider unsteady laminar natural convection flow of water subject to density inversion in a rectangular cavity formed by isothermal vertical walls with internal heat generation. The top and bottom horizontal walls are considered to be adiabatic, whereas the temperature of the left vertical wall is assumed to be greater than that of the right vertical wall. The equations are non-dimensionalized and are solved numerically by an upwind finite difference method together with a successive over-relaxation (SOR) technique. The effects of both heat generation and variations in the aspect ratio on the streamlines, isotherms and the rate of heat transfer from the walls of the enclosure are presented. Investigations are performed for water taking Prandtl number to be Pr=11.58 and the Rayleigh number to be Ra=105.  相似文献

Laminar natural convection of Cu-water nano-fluid between two horizontal concentric cylinders with radial fins attached to the inner cylinder is studied numerically. The inner and outer cylinders are maintained at constant temperature. The governing equations in the polar two-dimensional space with the respective boundary conditions are solved using the finite volume method. The hybrid-scheme is used to discretize the convection terms. In order to couple the velocity field and the pressure in the momentum equations, the well known semi-implicit method for pressure linked equation reformed algorithm is adopted. Using the developed code, a parametric study is undertaken, and the effects of the Rayleigh number, Number of fins, length of the fins and the volume fraction of nano-particles on the fluid flow and heat transfer inside the annuli are investigated. In this study, two cases with different number of fins are considered. It is observed from the results that the average Nusselt number increases with increasing both the Rayleigh number and the volume fraction of the nano-particles. Moreover, the average Nusselt number decreases by increasing the fins’ length and the number of fins. Heat transfer rate increases by increasing the fins’ length at all Rayleigh numbers, but it increases by increasing the number of fins at high Rayleigh numbers.  相似文献
