The growth of octadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (C(18)TAB) monolayers on mica was investigated using atomic force microscopy and infrared spectroscopy. A critical temperature was identified below which the monolayer formed via an "islanding" mechanism, that is, nucleation and growth of densely packed two-dimensional (2D) islands within a matrix of a disordered dilute phase. However, above the critical temperature, there was no coexistence of 2D phases during film formation. Instead, the monolayer gradually became better ordered, remaining laterally homogeneous throughout. We show that this corresponds to a critical point in a 2D phase diagram of the monolayer. Additional evidence is provided by the in situ observation of 2D phase separation upon cooling an incomplete monolayer from the one-phase to the two-phase region. The lack of coexisting domains (and domain boundaries) during growth above the critical point provides a possible route for the preparation of essentially defect-free monolayers.  相似文献

The kinetics of crystalline ice nucleation and growth in nonporous, molecular beam deposited amorphous solid water (ASW) films are investigated at temperatures near 140 K. We implement an experimental methodology and corresponding model of crystallization kinetics to decouple growth from nucleation and quantify the temperature dependence and absolute rates of both processes. Nucleation rates are found to increase from approximately 3x10(13) m(-3) s(-1) at 134 K to approximately 2x10(17) m(-3) s(-1) at 142 K, corresponding to an Arrhenius activation energy of 168 kJ/mol. Over the same temperature range, the growth velocity increases from approximately 0.4 to approximately 4 A s(-1), also exhibiting Arrhenius behavior with an activation energy of 47 kJ/mol. These nucleation rates are up to ten orders of magnitude larger than in liquid water near 235 K, while growth velocities are approximately 10(9) times smaller. Crystalline ice nucleation kinetics determined in this study differ significantly from those reported previously for porous, background vapor deposited ASW, suggesting the nucleation mechanism is dependent upon film morphology.  相似文献

Here, we report on a new aspect of the adsorption of Br- on the surface of gold. The adsorption of dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (C12TABr) from aqueous solutions onto macroporous gold particles was studied by continuous flow frontal analysis solid/liquid chromatography and flow adsorption microcalorimetry. The material balance and enthalpy balance of adsorption and the change in the solution pH were measured simultaneously. Initially, Br- is irreversibly bound to high-affinity surface sites counterbalanced by the adsorption of H+ from the aqueous phase. The surface speciation is accompanied by the formation of C12TAOH, which in turn results in a significant pH increase in the bulk solution. The net process was found to be strongly exothermic (-280 kJ.mol(-1)), which is indicative of the occurrence of chemisorption. The specific adsorption of Br- is followed by the reversible adsorption of C12TABr to produce a firmly bound monolayer in a head-to-surface arrangement (-53 kJ.mol(-1)). In a relatively narrow range of the surface coverage, various composite structures may develop on the top layer and eventually transform to full-cylindrical surface aggregates. The surface aggregation was found to be reversible, with an enthalpy change of -11 kJ.mol(-1). The importance of the specific binding of Br- to the surface of gold was confirmed by measurement of the initial adsorption of NaBr on the microparticles. The initial adsorption was found to be irreversible, with an enthalpy change of approximately -240 kJ.mol(-1). This process involved the formation of an AuBr-/H+ electric double layer at the gold/water interface, accompanied by a dramatic increase in the solution pH due to the release of a copious amount of OH- in the bulk liquid phase.  相似文献

The adsorption of Ca atoms on pristine and electron-irradiated poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) surfaces at 300 K has been studied by adsorption microcalorimetry, atomic beam/surface scattering, and low-energy He+ ion scattering spectroscopy (ISS). On pristine PMMA, the initial sticking probability of Ca is 0.5, increasing quickly with Ca coverage. Below 0.5 ML, the heat of adsorption is 730-780 kJ/mol, much higher than Ca's sublimation energy (178 kJ/mol). The Ca here is invisible to ISS, which is attributed to Ca binding to ester groups below the CH3/CH2-terminated PMMA surface. The adsorption energy increases with coverage, suggesting attractions between neighboring Ca-ester complexes. Above 0.5 ML, Ca starts to grow as three-dimensional (3D) Ca clusters on top of the surface, which dominate growth after 2 ML. It is proposed that each Ca reacts with two esters to form the Ca carboxylate of PMMA, because this reaction's heat would be close to that observed. The total amount of Ca that binds to subsurface sites is estimated from the integral heat of adsorption to involve 4-6 layers of ester groups. Exposing the PMMA surface to electrons increases Ca's initial sticking probability but lowers its adsorption energy. This is attributed to electron-induced defects acting as nucleation sites for 3D Ca islands, whose growth now competes kinetically with Ca diffusing to subsurface esters. Consequently, only two layers of subsurface esters get populated at saturation. The heat eventually reaches Ca's bulk heat of sublimation on all PMMA surfaces, where pure, bulk-like Ca thin films form.  相似文献

We report experimental results on the low-temperature uptake of HCl on H(2)O ice (ice). HCl was deposited on the surface at greater than monolayer amounts at 85 K, and the ice substrate was heated. The temperature dependence of the HCl vapor pressure from this phase was measured from 110 to 150 K, with the nucleation of a bulk hydrate phase observed at 150 K. Measurements were conducted in a closed system by simultaneous application of gas phase mass spectrometry and surface spectroscopy to characterize vapor/solid equilibrium and the nucleation of bulk hydrate phases. Combining the nucleation data reported here with data we reported previously (180 to 200 K) and data from two other laboratories (165 and 170 K), the thermodynamic boundaries for the nucleation of both the metastable bulk solution and bulk hydrate phases subsequent to monolayer adsorption of HCl have been determined. The nucleation of the metastable bulk solution phase occurs promptly at monolayer coverage at the ice/liquid coexistence boundary on the binary bulk phase diagram. The nucleation of the bulk hexahydrate occurs from this metastable solution along a locus of points defining a state of constant solution free energy. This measured free energy is -51.2 +/- 0.9 kJ/mol. Finally, the temperature dependence of the HCl vapor pressure from the low-temperature phase is reported here for the first time and is consistent with that of the metastable solution predicted by this thermodynamic model of uptake, extending the range of validity of this model of adsorption followed by bulk solution and hydrate nucleation to a lower bound in temperature of 110 K.  相似文献

Among several different approaches to form Pd/Ag alloys for hydrogen separation applications, ex situ studies carried out by conventional X-ray point scanning detectors might fail to reveal the key aspects of the phase transformation between Pd and Ag metals. In this respect, in situ time-resolved high-temperature X-ray diffraction (HTXRD) was employed to study the Pd/Ag alloy phase nucleation and growth kinetics. By the use of linear position sensitive detectors, advanced optics and profile fitting with the use of JADE-6.5 software, isothermal phase evolution of the Pd/Ag alloy at 500 °C, 550 °C and 600 °C under hydrogen atmosphere were quantified to elucidate the mechanistic details of the Pd/Ag alloy phase nucleation and growth pattern. Analysis of the HTXRD data by the Avrami model indicated that the nucleation of the Pd/Ag alloy phase was instantaneous where the growth mechanism was through diffusion-controlled one-dimensional thickening of the Pd/Ag alloy layer. The value of the Avrami exponent, n, was found to increase with temperature with the values of 0.34, 0.39 and 0.67 at 500 °C, 550 °C and 600 °C, respectively. In addition, parabolic rate law analysis suggested that the nucleation of the Pd/Ag alloy phase was through a heterogeneous nucleation mode, in which the nucleation sites were defined as the non-equilibrium defects. Indeed, the cross-sectional SEI micrographs indicated that the Pd/Ag alloy phase growth was strongly dependent upon the deposition morphology of the as-synthesized Pd and Ag layers formed by the electroless plating. Based on the Avrami model and the parabolic rate law, the estimated activation energies for the phase transformation were 236.5 kJ/mol and 185.6 kJ/mol and in excellent agreement with the literature values (183–239.5 kJ/mol). Finally, the in situ annealing of the 15.6 μm thick composite Pd/Ag/PSS membrane at 550 °C in hydrogen atmosphere indicated that the Pd/Ag alloy phase formation was not complete even after 500 h. According to the Avrami model, the increase in the hydrogen permeance from 7.1 m3/m2 h atm0.5 to 21.3 m3/m2 h atm0.5 at 550 °C over a period of 500 h corresponded to an 83% Pd/Ag alloy phase formation.  相似文献

Kinetics of the wurtzite-to-rock-salt transformation in ZnO has been studied in the 5-7 GPa pressure range at temperatures below the activation of diffusion processes. The detailed analysis of non-isothermal experimental data using the general evolution equation describing the kinetics of direct phase transformations in solids allowed us to study the kinetic particularities of both nucleation and growth of the rock-salt phase in parent wurtzite ZnO. The main rate-limiting processes are thermally activated nucleation (E(N) = 383 kJ mol(-1) at 6.9 GPa) and thermally nonactivated (most probably quasi-martensitic) growth (k(G) = 0.833 min(-1) at 6.9 GPa). The high impact of thermal deactivation of nucleation places has been evidenced in the case of slow heating, which indirectly indicates that the rs-ZnO nucleation places are mainly produced by pressure-induced stresses in the parent phase.  相似文献

The dielectric spectra of propylene glycol over the frequency and temperature ranges 10 mHz–75 GHz and 175–423 K, respectively, were analyzed using the Dissado-Hill cluster model. A correlation between relaxation processes of breaking and formation of intermolecular H-bonds in clusters was obtained. A correlation of fluctuation processes of synchronous exchange of molecules between neighboring clusters corresponded to the redistribution of H-bonds between them. The Dissado-Hill theory was used to determine the integral relaxation times, n DH and m DH parameters and calculate the mean dipole moments of propylene glycol clusters and the energy characteristics of processes of their rearrangement. The mean dipole moments of clusters (23617–18.65 D) were compared with those of molecules in the liquid phase (3.67–3.03 D). The apparent activation enthalpy of processes of cluster rearrangements decreased from 141.8 to 25.2 kJ/mol, the activation energy decreased from 46.03 to 18.47 kJ/mol, and the energy of orientation dipole-dipole interactions, from 3.78 to 3.45 kJ/mol as the temperature increased.  相似文献

The adsorption state and thermal stability of V(benzene)2 sandwich clusters soft-landed onto a self-assembled monolayer of different chain-length n-alkanethiols (Cn-SAM, n = 8, 12, 16, 18, and 22) were studied by means of infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRAS) and temperature-programmed desorption (TPD). The IRAS measurement confirmed that V(benzene)2 clusters are molecularly adsorbed and maintain a sandwich structure on all of the SAM substrates. In addition, the clusters supported on the SAM substrates are oriented with their molecular axes tilted 70-80 degrees off the surface normal. An Arrhenius analysis of the TPD spectra reveals that the activation energy for the desorption of the supported clusters increases linearly with the chain length of the SAMs. For the longest chain C22-SAM, the activation energy reaches approximately 150 kJ/mol, and the thermal desorption of the supported clusters can be considerably suppressed near room temperature. The clear chain-length-dependent thermal stability of the supported clusters observed here can be explained well in terms of the cluster penetration into the SAM matrixes.  相似文献

The adsorption isotherms of caffeine from aqueous solution onto three hydrogen donating adsorbents-hydroxypolystyrene,polystryene-azo-pyrogallol,and D72 resin-were measured. The adsorption enthalpies calculated from the isotherms according to the Clausisu-Clapeyron equation were -24-36kJ/mol,-32-37kJ/mol,and -19-24kJ/mol respectively. These values implied that the adsorption processes were based on hydrogen bonding.Furthermore.the mechanism of the adsorption of caffeine onto D72 resin was studied by IR spectra and the small molecular model experiments, and the results showed that the adsorption of caffeine onto hydrogen donating adsorbents was based on hydrogen bonding.  相似文献

This is a report on the kinetics of the destruction and formation processes of the 6-thioguanine self-assembled monolayer (6TG SAM) on a mercury electrode from acid solutions by chronoamperometry. The destruction of the 6TG SAM that has been previously formed under open circuit potential conditions is carried out by stepping the potential from an initial value where the chemisorbed layer is stable up to potentials where the molecules are no longer chemisorbed. The destruction of the SAM has been described by a model that involves three types of contributions: (i) a Langmuir-type adsorption process, (ii) a 2D nucleation mechanism followed by a growth controlled by surface diffusion, and (iii) a 2D nucleation mechanism followed by a growth at a constant rate. The nonlinear fit of the experimental transients by using this procedure allows the quantitative determination of the individual contributions to the overall process. The kinetics of the formation process is studied under electrochemical conditions. The chronoamperometric experiment allows us to monitor the early stages of 6TG SAM formation. The implications of the physisorbed state at low potentials in the type of monolayer formation and destruction processes as well as the influence of temperature are also discussed.  相似文献

1. INTRODUCTIONHydrogen bonding is a useful mechanism for adsorptive separation. The low enemy of thisbond ensures reversibility, while the directionality and the short range of this bond conferselectivity. The reaction enthalpies for the solution-phase self-assembly of n-alkylphosphonic acids on the surfaces of TiO2 and ZrO2 have been determined using isothermal titration calorimetry at 298 K. The reaction enthalpies were negative (exothermic) for methyl- and n-octylphosphonic acids and positive (endothermic) for n-octadecylphosphonic acid with both metal oxides. The enthalpy/energy analysis showed that the net enthalpy of the formation of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) at solid-liquid interface can be presented as follows: DeltaHr=-D-(DeltaHsol+DeltaHdil)-(ES-ESAM), where D is the binding energy of the SAM molecules with the solid; DeltaHsol and DeltaHdil are the enthalpies of dissolution and dilution; ES and ESAM are the surface energies of bare solid and SAM, respectively. This equation predicted an increase (and the sign change) of the reaction enthalpy as the alkyl group in n-alkylphosphonic acid increased, which explained the experimental data. Using this equation, the binding energy (D) in the SAMs of n-octyl- and n-octadecylphosphonic acids were estimated: 55+/-5 kJ/mol (for ZrO2) and 58+/-7 kJ/mol (for TiO2).  相似文献

Thermodynamic and kinetics studies for adsorption of Pt ions complexes from the chloride solutions obtained by leaching chlorinated spent automotive catalysts on anionic exchange resin Diaion WA21J were carried out. It was found that only Si, Pt, Rh and Pd from the solution were selectively adsorbed on the resin Diaion WA21J more strongly. The adsorption equilibrium time for Pt ions was about 20 h. The isothermal adsorption of Pt ions was found to fit Langmuir, Freundlich and DKR models. The maximum monolayer adsorption capacities Q(max) and X(m) of Pt ions on the resin based on Langmuir and DKR model were 4.85, 5.36 and 5.69 mg/g as well as 5.01, 5.63 and 5.98 mg/g for temperatures 18°C, 28°C and 40°C, respectively. The apparent adsorption energy E(ad) based on DKR model were -11.79, -11.04 and -11.04 kJ/mol for the temperatures 18°C, 28°C and 40°C, respectively. Ion exchange was the mechanism involved in the adsorption process. The adsorption of Pt ions on the resin underwent pseudo-first-order kinetic process, and the apparent adsorption activation energy E(a,1) was 12.6 kJ/mol. The intraparticle diffusion of Pt ions was a main rate-controlling step in most of time of adsorption process.  相似文献

We have investigated the interaction of vapor-deposited copper with -CH3, -OH, -OCH3, -COOH, and -CO2CH3 terminated alkanethiolate self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) adsorbed on polycrystalline Au using time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry and density functional theory calculations. For -OH, -COOH, and -CO2CH3 terminated SAMs measurements indicate that for all copper coverages there is a competition between Cu atom bond insertion into C-O bonds, stabilization at the SAM/vacuum interface, and penetration to the Au/S interface. In contrast, on a -OCH3 terminated SAM Cu only weakly interacts with the methoxy group and penetrates to the Au substrate, while for a -CH3 terminated SAM deposited copper only penetrates to the Au/S interface. The insertion of copper into C-O terminal group bonds is an activated process. We estimate that the barriers for Cu insertion are 55 +/- 5 kJ mol(-1) for the ester, 50 +/- 5 kJ mol(-1) for the acid, and 55 +/- 5 kJ mol(-1) for the hydroxyl terminated SAMs. The activation barrier for the copper insertion is much higher for the -OCH3 SAM. Copper atoms with energies lower than the activation barrier partition between complexation (weak interaction) with the terminal groups and penetration through the monolayer to the Au/S interface. Weakly stabilized copper atoms at the SAM/vacuum interface slowly penetrate through the monolayer. In contrast to the case of Al deposition, C-O bond insertion is favored over C=O, C-H, and C-C bond insertion.  相似文献

We have studied the surface coverage dependence of the co-adsorption of D and D(2)O on the Ni(111) surface under UHV conditions. We use detailed temperature-programmed desorption studies and high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy to show how pre-covering the surface with various amounts of D affects adsorption and desorption of D(2)O. Our results show that the effects of co-adsorption are strongly dependent on D-coverage. In the deuterium pre-coverage range of 0-0.3 ML, adsorption of deuterium leaves a fraction of the available surface area bare for D(2)O adsorption, which shows no significant changes compared to adsorption on the bare surface. Our data indicate phase segregation of hydrogen and water into islands. At low post-coverages, D(2)O forms a two-phase system on the remaining bare surface that shows zero-order desorption kinetics. This two phase system likely consists of a 2-D solid phase of extended islands of hexamer rings and a 2-D water gas phase. Increasing the water post-dose leads at first to 'freezing' of the 2-D gas and is followed by formation of ordered, multilayered water islands in-between the deuterium islands. For deuterium pre-coverages between 0.3 and 0.5 ML, our data may be interpreted that the water hexamer ring structure, (D(2)O)(6), required for the formation of an ordered multilayer, does not form anymore. Instead, more disordered linear and branched chains of water molecules grow in-between the extended, hydrophobic deuterium islands. These deuterium islands have a D-atom density in agreement with a (2x2)-2D structure. The disordered water structures adsorbed in-between form nucleation sites for growth of 3-D water structures. Loss of regular lateral hydrogen bonding and weakened interaction with the substrate reduces the binding energy of water significantly in this regime and results in lowering of the desorption temperature. At deuterium pre-coverages greater than 0.5 ML, the saturated (2x2)-2D structure mixes with (1x1)-1D patches. The mixed structures are also hydrophobic. On such surfaces, submonolayer doses of water lead to formation of 3-D water structures well before wetting the entire hydrogen-covered surface.  相似文献

129Xe and 131Xe nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy was used to study the adsorption of xenon gas on as-produced single-walled and multi-walled carbon nanotubes. Overall, the adsorption was weak, with slightly stronger interaction between xenon and multi-walled nanotubes. Temperature-dependent spectra, relaxation times, line widths, and signal intensities provide evidence that xenon forms a multilayer bulk phase rather than a homogeneous surface coating. The estimated adsorption energy of 1.6 kJ/mol is significantly lower than 23 kJ/mol predicted for monolayer adsorption but is in keeping with the Xe-Xe attractive potential. Xenon preferentially adsorbs on metallic particles in single-walled tubes, while defects are the nucleation sites for the stronger adsorption on multi-walled tubes.  相似文献

The adsorption of Ca on the MgO(100) surface at 300 K has been studied using microcalorimetry, in combination with LEED, AES, ISS, work function, sticking probability measurements, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The MgO(100) thin films (approximately 4 nm thick) were grown epitaxially on a 1 microm thick Mo(100) single-crystal. The sticking probability of Ca on MgO(100) at 300 K is unity. On the basis of AES and ISS measurements, it was determined that Ca grows mainly as 3D particles on the MgO(100) surface with a density of approximately 1 x 10(12) islands/cm2. Ca adsorbs initially at defect sites with a very high heat of adsorption (approximately 410 kJ/mol). DFT calculations attribute this high initial heat to Ca binding to kink sites (376 kJ/mol), step sites (205 kJ/mol), and lower concentrations of stronger binding sites. The heat of adsorption decreases rapidly with coverage, reaching a minimum of 162 kJ/mol at approximately 0.3 ML, where Ca is mainly adding to small 3D Ca clusters. Afterward, it increases to the value of bulk Ca heat of sublimation (178 kJ/mol) at approximately 1.2 ML, attributed to the increase in stability with increasing Ca particle size. A 1.0 eV decrease of the work function with Ca coverage from 0 to 0.3 ML indicates that Ca adsorbed at defects is cationic, in agreement with calculations showing that Ca donates electron density to the MgO. Light ion sputtering of the MgO(100) surface generates point defects, but these do not change the heat of adsorption versus coverage, implying that they do not nucleate Ca particles. Oxygen vacancies are a likely candidate; DFT calculations show that F and F+ center vacancies bind Ca more weakly than terrace sites. More extensive sputtering creates extended defects (such as steps and kinks) that adsorb Ca with heats of adsorption up to approximately 400 kJ/mol, similar to that at the intrinsic defect sites.  相似文献
