On the relative commutants of subfactors

Let be factors generated by a periodic tower of finite dimensional -algebras. We prove that for sufficiently large , is -isomorphic to a subalgebra of .

     

Forked Temperley-Lieb algebras and intermediate subfactors

We consider noncommuting pairs P, Q of intermediate subfactors of an irreducible, finite-index inclusion N⊂M of II₁ factors such that P and Q are supertransitive with Jones index less than 4 over N. We show that up to isomorphism of the standard invariant, there is a unique such pair corresponding to each even value but none for the odd values . We also classify the angle values which occur between pairs of intermediate subfactors with small index over their intersection: if [P:N],[Q:N]<4, then the unique nontrivial angle value is always .     

On ultraproducts of operator algebras

Some basic questions on ultraproducts of C~*-algebras and von Neumann al- gebras,including the relation to K-theory of C~*-algebras are considered.More specifically, we prove that under certain conditions,the K-groups of ultraproduct of C~*-algebras are iso- morphic to the ultraproduct of respective K-groups of C~*-algebras.We also show that the ultraproducts of factors of type Ⅱ_1 are prime,i.e.not isomorphic to any non-trivial tensor product.

On ＂Problems on von Neumann Algebras by R. Kadison, 1967＂

A brief summary of the development on Kadison‘s famous problems (1967) is given. A new set of problems in von Neumann algebras is listed.     

On representing some lattices as lattices of intermediate subfactors of finite index

We prove that the very simple lattices which consist of a largest, a smallest and 2n pairwise incomparable elements where n is a positive integer can be realized as the lattices of intermediate subfactors of finite index and finite depth. Using the same techniques, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for subfactors coming from Loop groups of type A at generic levels to be maximal.     

Sofic groups and direct finiteness

We construct an analogue of von Neumann's affiliated algebras for sofic group algebras over arbitrary fields. Consequently, we settle Kaplansky's direct finiteness conjecture for sofic groups.     

The weak closure of the set of left translation operators

It is known that for an amenable locally compact group , is not in the weak closure of of . In this paper, it is proved that the converse of this is true. In other words, if is a non-amenable locally compact group, then is in the weak closure of . This answers several questions of Ülger. Applications to the algebra and the dual of the reduced group -algebra are obtained.

引入了算子代数的一种新运算"斜积",证明了在这个新定义的斜积运算下算子代数的自反性保持不变.研究发现,斜积运算对应的子空间格是拓扑意义下的格的直积关系.这个新发现的重要意义在于由此可从已知的自反子空间格生成更多更复杂的新自反格,从而得到新的自反代数.在此基础上,本文对KS-代数保持性等其他非自伴代数类的性质也作了相应研究.     

On the notion of relative property (T) for inclusions of von Neumann algebras

We prove that the notion of rigidity (or relative property (T)) for inclusions of finite von Neumann algebras recently defined by the second author is equivalent to a weaker property, in which no “continuity constants” are required. The proof is by contradiction and uses infinite products of completely positive maps, regarded as correspondences.     

On maximal injective subalgebras of tensor products of von Neumann algebras

Let Mi be a von Neumann algebra, and Bi be a maximal injective von Neumann subalgebra of Mi, i=1,2. If M₁ has separable predual and the center of B₁ is atomic, e.g., B₁ is a factor, then is a maximal injective von Neumann subalgebra of . This partly answers a question of Popa.     

Strong connectedness of the invertibles in a finite subdiagonal algebra

Suppose is a finite, subdiagonal subalgebra of a von Neumann algebra. We show that the invertible group of is strongly connected.

     

Products of projections in von Neumann algebras

We describe the elements of von Neumann algebras which can be represented as products of orthogonal projections and idempotents, and estimate the minimal number of terms in the product.     

On τ-tilting finiteness of the Schur algebra

We determined the τ-tilting finiteness of Schur algebras over an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic, except for a few small cases.     

On Strong Kadison–Singer Algebras

We show that many Kadison–Singer algebras are maximal triangular in all algebras containing them although their definition requires the maximality taken in the class of reflexive algebras. Diagonal-trivial maximal non self-adjoint subalgebras of matrix algebras with lower dimensions are classified.     

On triangular algebras with noncommutative diagonals

We construct a triangular algebra whose diagonals form a noncommutative algebra and its lattice of invariant projections contains only two nontrivial projections. Moreover we prove that our triangular algebra is maximal.     

Approximation numbers of weighted composition operators

We study the approximation numbers of weighted composition operators $f?w?(f°\phi )$ on the Hardy space $H^2$ on the unit disc. For general classes of such operators, upper and lower bounds on their approximation numbers are derived. For the special class of weighted lens map composition operators with specific weights, we show how much the weight w can improve the decay rate of the approximation numbers, and give sharp upper and lower bounds. These examples are motivated from applications to the analysis of relative commutants of special inclusions of von Neumann algebras appearing in quantum field theory (Borchers triples).     

Equivalent characterization of centralizers on <Emphasis Type="Italic">B</Emphasis>(<Emphasis Type="Italic">H</Emphasis>)

Let H be a Hilbert space with dim H≥2 and Z∈ß(H) be an arbitrary but fixed operator. In this paper we show that an additive map Φ:ß(H) → ß(H) satisfies Φ(AB)=Φ(A)B=AΦ(B) for any A,B∈ß(H) with AB=Z if and only if Φ(AB)=Φ(A)B=AΦ(B), ∀A, B∈ß(H), that is, Φ is a centralizer. Similar results are obtained for Hilbert space nest algebras. In addition, we show that Φ(A²)=AΦ(A)=Φ(A)A for any A∈ ß(H) with AA²=0 if and only if Φ(A)=AΦ(I)=Φ(I)A, ∀A∈ß(H), and generalize main results in Linear Algebra and its Application, 450, 243-249 (2014) to infinite dimensional case. New equivalent characterization of centralizers on ß(H) is obtained.
