Interference patterns generated by a regular lattice of SiO2 microspheres on a transparent support are used for the surface patterning of polyimide (PI) foils. Using 248 nm excimer-laser radiation, thousands to millions of holes with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 160±40 nm can be generated with a single laser pulse. Self-starting additive-pulse mode locking of a diode-pumped Nd:KGd(WO4)2 laser is demonstrated for the first time. An output power of 0.85 W is achieved with 2.3-ps pulses at a repetition frequency of 76.5 MHz. The shortest pulse generated had a duration of 1.9 ps. Fluorescence experiments have been performed to study the interaction of 193-nm laser radiation with dielectric thin films of LaF3, AlF3, and MgF2. Spectral- and time-resolved measurements reveal the presence of cerium in LaF3 and the influence of hydrocarbons in MgF2 and LaF3. Virtually no fluorescence response is observable in the case of AlF3. Supplementary measurements on multilayer stacks confirm the contribution of hydrocarbon and cerium emission in high-reflective UV mirrors upon ArF excimer laser irradiation. Energy density dependent measurements indicate a linear absorption process as the origin of UV laser induced fluorescence in LaF3. Luminescence calculations are applied as a helpful tool in order to account for interference effects that are inherently to be found in the multilayer emission spectra. The progress in the development of a sensor for the detection of trace air constituents to monitor spacecraft air quality is reported. A continuous-wave (cw), external-cavity tunable diode laser centered at 1.55 μm is used to pump an optical cavity absorption cell in cw-cavity ringdown spectroscopy (cw-CRDS). Preliminary results are presented that demonstrate the sensitivity, selectivity and reproducibility of this method. Detection limits of 2.0 ppm for CO, 2.5 ppm for CO2, 1.8 ppm for H2O, 19.4 ppb for NH3, 7.9 ppb for HCN and 4.0 ppb for C2H2 are calculated. We report an investigation of the ablation of NaCl crystals at the 157-nm wavelength of the F2 laser where there is very strong excitonic absorption. Probe-beam deflection and etch-rate measurements show that the interaction is characterised by a low ablation threshold (∼80 mJ cm-2) and a capability for controllable material removal at the nanometer level. Scanning electron microscopy of the exposed surfaces show this to be microscopically smooth but with fine cracks present. It is demonstrated that micron-scale features can be formed in NaCl using 157-nm laser ablation, a result attributed to the strongly localised optical and thermal nature of the interaction. NiTi films deposited by pulsed laser ablation on Si/SiO2 are shown to exhibit structural and functional properties related to the shape-memory effect. Film characterization suggests that relevant temperatures for the solid-to-solid transformation responsible for the shape memory are in substantial agreement with those of the bulk target material, demonstrating a good congruency of the deposition process. Besides the technological interest for this class of thin films, our findings point out the suitability of laser ablation for metal alloy deposition. An investigation based on in situ ion-mass spectroscopy and covariance mapping analysis allows us to determine the main vapor-phase processes leading to the formation of stoichiometric clusters expected to play a relevant role in assisting the growth of NiTi thin films. The backscattered fluorescence of nitrogen from filaments generated by intense ultra-fast Ti:sapphire laser pulses propagating in air is studied. The backscattered fluorescence from N2 molecules and ions show an exponential increase with increasing filament length, indicating amplified spontaneous emission. This paper describes a tunable diode laser spectrometer for the in situ measurement of methane by high-resolution absorption spectroscopy of roto-vibrational lines, using a distributed feedback laser emitting in the near infrared (1.65 μm) and a multi-pass cell, with a two-tone detection scheme. The instrument was designed to be installed on the high-altitude aircraft M55 Geophysica, for high-sensitivity and high-temporal-resolution measurement of CH4, both as a greenhouse gas and as a tracer of air-mass motion. The instrument-design criteria to achieve the compactness, low weight, and ruggedness necessary for automatic operation on an unpressurized high-altitude aircraft are reported. Results are given for thermal tuning and modulation of a 1556-nm distributed feedback fibre laser by resistive heating of a thin silver film chemically deposited on the fibre. Without reaching the limits of performance, linear tuning is demonstrated at a rate of 1.72 pm/mW up to about 200 pm, and a peak-to-peak modulation of 100 MHz up to modulation frequencies of 60 Hz. The heat flow is analyzed, and the coated fibre is characterized in terms of the static and dynamic wavelength response to the applied electric power. The performance of the scheme is tested by recording part of the ν13 combination band spectrum of 13C2H2 with thermal modulation and scanning of the fibre laser. For obtaining the maximal output power, five lasing gas mixtures (CO2, N2, He, Xe and H2) in a sealed-off CO2 laser are optimized by applying a genetic algorithm and solving CO2 laser kinetics equations. A comparison of numerical simulations shows that the optimal pressures of CO2 and N2 are 1.15 Torr and 7.32 Torr, respectively. Accordingly, the maximum laser power of 124 W is obtained by utilizing the optimal gas combination and an optimized resonator with a length of 1.2 m. Ultrahigh-efficiency TEM00 operation is demonstrated in a diode-pumped Nd:YVO4 laser in a bounce amplifier geometry using a specially designed astigmatically optimised cavity configuration. Optical efficiency >68% is demonstrated and up to 27.1 W of output power for multimode operation. For single-mode TEM00 operation, an output power of 23.1 W for 39.5 W of diode pumping was produced with beam propagation parameters of Mx 2=1.3 and My 2=1.1. Diode-pumped Nd:YVO4 and Nd:KGW lasers passively Q-switched with PbS-quantum dot-doped phosphate glass were demonstrated. For the Nd:YVO4 laser, pulses 110 ns in duration with a 13% Q-switching efficiency were obtained. The absorption recovery time of the PbS-doped glass was measured to be 27±4 ps. Some recommendations for more efficient use of PbS-doped glasses for Q-switching of diode-pumped lasers are suggested on the basis of our analysis. Boron isotope enrichment in nanosecond pulsed laser-ablation plume   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Boron isotopic enrichment is observed in the laser ablation of B4C target using nanosecond (ns) wide 532 nm laser beam of a Nd-YAG laser. B10/B11 ratio of 0.9 against the natural abundance of 0.25 is obtained at a laser power density of 8×108 W/cm2 (fluence of 6.4 J/cm2). The enrichment as a function of laser power density is demonstrated using a quadrupole mass spectrometer. Apart from higher enrichment factor, only singly charged ions are found in the laser plume from the B4C target, in contrast to the multiply charged ions from the BN target reported in a recent report using femtosecond (fs) laser pulses. This study indicates the possibility of using less expensive, widely used ns lasers, which can also yield a higher throughput per pulse than a fs laser for isotope enrichment. A new laser medium – Yb,Tm:KY(WO4)2 – for diode pumped solid state laser applications operating around 1.9 to 2.0 μm has been investigated and the main laser characteristics are presented. Diode pumping at 981 nm and around 805 nm was realised. For 981-nm pumping, the excitation occurs into Yb3+ ions followed by an energy transfer to Tm3+ions. A slope efficiency of 19% was realised. For pumping around 805 nm, the excitation occurs directly into the Tm3+ ions. Here a maximum slope efficiency of 52%, an optical efficiency of 40%, and output powers of more than 1 W were realised. Using a birefringent quartz plate as an intracavity tuning element, the tunability of the Yb,Tm:KY(WO4)2 laser in the spectral range of 1.85–2.0 μm has been demonstrated. The possibility of laser operation in a microchip cavity configuration for this material has also been shown. We report on a passively Q-switched diode-pumped Nd:YVO4 laser polarized along the a axis (corresponding to the smallest value of emission cross section at 1064 nm), generating 157-μJ pulses with 6.0-ns time duration (>20 kW peak power) and 3.6 W of average power at 1064 nm with good beam quality (M2<1.4). The selection of the polarization was performed by a novel technique relying on the birefringence of the laser crystal and on the misalignment sensitivity of the resonator. Mainly [115]-oriented SrBi2Ta2O9 (SBT) films were prepared on GaAs(100) substrates with TiO2 buffer layers. Both the SBT films and the TiO2 buffer layers were deposited by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) using a KrF excimer laser. The depth profile of the constituent elements observed by Auger electron spectrometry (AES) shows no remarkable diffusion at both the interfaces between SBT and TiO2 and between TiO2 and the GaAs substrate. The electrical characteristics of the Pt/SBT/TiO2/GaAs(100) structures show a ferroelectric hysteresis loop with a small remanent polarization (∼0.5 μC/cm2). Single crystals of monoclinic BaY2F8 and tetragonal LiYF4 codoped with the same Tm3+ and Ho3+ concentrations were successfully grown by the Czochralski method. Here we present a comparative analysis of the two hosts including spectroscopic characterization and cw diode-pumped laser experiments in the 2-μm wavelength region at room temperature. The main differences between the two hosts are a lower slope efficiency associated with a much wider tuning range (2005–2094 nm) of BaY2F8 with respect to LiYF4. We demonstrate, for the first time to our knowledge, operation of a self-adaptive holographic laser with wavelength selection, which uses Nd:YLF as the gain medium. The holographic laser was self-starting and, by virtue of the temporal dynamics in writing the gain grating, passively Q-switched the cavity to produce pulses with 20–50 ns duration. A pulse energy of 184 mJ was obtained from the system with beams having a TEM00 spatial profile. Single-longitudinal-mode operation was observed with near-transform-limited bandwidth. The recent observation of optical gain from silicon nanocrystals embedded in SiO2 opens an opportunity to develop a nanoscale silicon-based laser. However, the challenge remains to design and develop a laser architecture using CMOS-compatible materials. In this paper we present two designs for a waveguide laser in which silicon nanocrystals embedded in SiO2 are used as the optical gain media. One design employs a SiO2 membrane containing encapsulated Si nanocrystals. Preliminary calculations given here show that a highly resonant laser cavity can be produced in a SiO2 membrane using sub-wavelength structures. This photonic crystal architecture, used to guide and contain the light, can be combined with a gain medium of optically active Si nanocrystals synthesized in the SiO2 membrane using ion implantation/thermal annealing to produce a Si-based laser. The laser cavity dimensions can be matched to the near-infrared wavelengths where optical gain has been observed from Si nanocrystals. The second design utilizes silicon nanocrystals embedded in a distributed-feedback laser cavity fabricated in SiO2. Lasing action over a broad wavelength range centered at ∼770 nm should be possible in both of these configurations. A photoacoustic spectrometer for the simultaneous detection of isoprene and the deuterated species [4,4-2H]-2-methyl-1,3-butadiene (isoprene-d2) is presented. Using a sealed-off 13CO2 laser a single-component detection limit of 400 ppt (isoprene) and 600 ppt (isoprene-d2) was achieved. Simultaneous monitoring of both compounds allowed the detection of labelling levels down to 6% (isoprene-d2 in total isoprene) with a time resolution of 3 min. In emission studies with Eucalyptus globulus, the deuterated precursor [4,4-2H]-1-deoxy-D-xylulose was fed to a leaf through the transpiration stream. Emission of isoprene-d2 started as early as 10 min after application of the precursor.
