The following estimate of the pth derivative of a probability density function is examined: Σk = 0Na?khk(x), where hk is the kth Hermite function and a?k = ((?1)pn)Σi = 1nhk(p)(Xi) is calculated from a sequence X1,…, Xn of independent random variables having the common unknown density. If the density has r derivatives the integrated square error converges to zero in the mean and almost completely as rapidly as O(n?α) and O(n?α log n), respectively, where α = 2(r ? p)(2r + 1). Rates for the uniform convergence both in the mean square and almost complete are also given. For any finite interval they are O(n?β) and O(n2log n), respectively, where β = (2(r ? p) ? 1)(2r + 1).  相似文献

The Hermite series estimate of a density f?Lp, p > 1, convergessin the mean square to f (x) for almost all x? |R, ifN (n) → ∞ and N (n) / n2 → ) as n → ∞, where N is the number of the Hermite functions in the estimate while n is the number of observations. Moreover, the mean square and weak consistency are equivalent. For m times differentiable densities, the mean squares convergence rate is O(n?(2m?1)/2m). Results for complete convergence are also given.  相似文献

The kernel method of density estimation is not so attractive when the density has its support confined to (0, ∞), particularly when the density is unsmooth at the origin. In this situation the method of orthogonal series is competitive. We consider three essentially different orthogonal series—those based on the even and odd Hermite functions, respectively, and that based on Laguerre functions—and compare them from the point of view of mean integrated square error.  相似文献

We describe a class of smoothed orthogonal series density estimates, including the classical sequential-series introduced by [6], Soviet Math. Dokl. 3 1559–1562) and [16], Ann. Math. Statist. 38 1261–1265), and [23], Ann. Statist 9 146–156) two-parameter smoothing. The Bowman-Rudemo method of least-squares cross-validation (1982, Manchester-Sheffield School of Probability and Statistics Research Report 84/AWB/1; 1984, Biometrika 71 353–360; [14], Scand. J. Statist. 9 65–78), is suggested as a practical way of choosing smoothing parameters automatically. Using techniques of [18], Ann. Statist. 12 1285–1297), that method is shown to perform asymptotically optimally in the case of cosine and Hermite series estimators. The same argument may be used for other types of series.  相似文献

Among several widely use methods of nonparametric density estimation is the technique of orthogonal series advocated by several authors. For such estimate when the observations are assumed to have been taken from strong mixing sequence in the sense of Rosenblatt [7] we study strong consistency by developing probability inequality for bounded strongly mixing random variables. The results obtained are then applied to two estimates of the functional Δ(f)=∫f 2 (x)dx were strong consistency is established. One of the suggested two estimates of Δ(f) was recently studied by Schuler and Wolff [8] in the case of independent and identically distributed observations where they established consistency in the second mean of the estimate. Based on a random sample from a population with (unknown) probability density f, this note exhibits a class of statistics f(p) for each fixed integer p ≧ 0. It is shown that f(p) are uniformly strongly consistent estimators of f(p), the pth order derivative of f, if and only iff(p)is bounded and uniformly continuous.  相似文献

Summary Letf n (p) be a recursive kernel estimate off (p) thepth order derivative of the probability density functionf, based on a random sample of sizen. In this paper, we provide bounds for the moments of and show that the rate of almost sure convergence of to zero isO(n −α), α<(r−p)/(2r+1), iff (r),r>p≧0, is a continuousL 2(−∞, ∞) function. Similar rate-factor is also obtained for the almost sure convergence of to zero under different conditions onf. This work was supported in part by the Research Foundation of SUNY.  相似文献

Some types of density estimators, particularly those based on trigonometric series, converge reasonably quickly to their limit except in the neighbourhood of one or two singularities. In this situation the mean integrated square error, the traditional measure of the efficiency of a density estimator, is an unsatisfactory measure. The notion of partial mean integrated square error is introduced and used to compare the performance of trigonometric series estimators. The results lead to consideration of some new estimators which have excellent properties from the points of view of both efficiency and ease of computation.  相似文献

This paper presents a nonparametric histogram density estimator based on the spacings of order statistics. This estimator generalizes to the bivariate case the univariate histogram estimator proposed by Van Ryzin (1973). The first of the two theorems in this paper gives conditions under which the estimator is pointwise strongly consistent. The second theorem provides conditions for the asymptotic normality of the estimator for points at which the density function possesses continuous partial derivatives of second order.  相似文献

Time series of counts have a wide variety of applications in real life. Analyzing time series of counts requires accommodations for serial dependence, discreteness, and overdispersion of data. In this paper, we extend blockwise empirical likelihood (Kitamura, 1997 [15]) to the analysis of time series of counts under a regression setting. In particular, our contribution is the extension of Kitamura’s (1997) [15] method to the analysis of nonstationary time series. Serial dependence among observations is treated nonparametrically using a blocking technique; and overdispersion in count data is accommodated by the specification of a variance-mean relationship. We establish consistency and asymptotic normality of the maximum blockwise empirical likelihood estimator. Simulation studies show that our method has a good finite sample performance. The method is also illustrated by analyzing two real data sets: monthly counts of poliomyelitis cases in the USA and daily counts of non-accidental deaths in Toronto, Canada.  相似文献

Stochastic measures of the distance between a density f and its estimate fn have been used to compare the accuracy of density estimators in Monte Carlo trials. The practice in the past has been to select a measure largely on the basis of its ease of computation, using only heuristic arguments to explain the large sample behaviour of the measure. Steele [11] has shown that these arguments can lead to incorrect conclusions. In the present paper we obtain limit theorems for the stochastic processes derived from stochastic measures, thereby explaining the large sample behaviour of the measures.  相似文献

Summary The objective in nonparametric regression is to infer a functiong(x) and itspth order derivativesg (g)(x),p≧1 fixed, on the basis of a finite collection of pairs {x i, g(xi)+Z i} i=1 n , where the noise componentsZ i satisfy certain modest assumptions and the domain pointsx i are selected non-randomly. This paper exhibits a new class of kernel estimatesg n (p) ,p≧0 fixed. The main theoretical results of this study are the rates of convergence obtained for mean square and strong consistency ofg n (p) each of them being uniform on the (0,1).  相似文献

Summary The rates at which integrated mean square and mean squre errors of nonparametric density estimation by orthogonal series method for sequences of strictly stationary strong mixing random variables are obtained. These rates are better than those known to hold for the independent case and they are shown to hold for Markov processes. In fact our results when specialized to the independent case are improvements over previously known results of Schwartz (1967,Ann. Math. Statist.,38, 1262–1265). An extension of the results to estimation of the bivariate density is also given. For a sequence of strictly stationary uniform or strong mixing we estimate the mean residual time of the marginal distribution from the first n observations. Under appropriate conditions it is shown that the estimate converges weakly to a well-defined Gaussian process even when the sample size is random.  相似文献

We prove a multivariate CLT for skewness and kurtosis of the wavelets coefficients of a stationary field on the torus. The results are in the framework of the fixed-domain asymptotics, i.e. we refer to observations of a single field which is sampled at higher and higher frequencies. We consider also studentized statistics for the case of an unknown correlation structure. The results are motivated by the analysis of high-frequency financial data or cosmological data sets, with a particular interest towards testing for Gaussianity and isotropy.  相似文献

On the basis of a random sample of size n on an m-dimensional random vector X, this note proposes a class of estimators fn(p) of f(p), where f is a density of X w.r.t. a σ-finite measure dominated by the Lebesgue measure on Rm, p = (p1,…,pm), pj ≥ 0, fixed integers, and for x = (x1,…,xm) in Rm, f(p)(x) = ?p1+…+pm f(x)/(?p1x1 … ?pmxm). Asymptotic unbiasedness as well as both almost sure and mean square consistencies of fn(p) are examined. Further, a necessary and sufficient condition for uniform asymptotic unbisedness or for uniform mean square consistency of fn(p) is given. Finally, applications of estimators of this note to certain statistical problems are pointed out.  相似文献

Summary Let (X 1,Y 1), (X 2,Y 2),…, (X n,Y n) be i.i.d. as (X, Y). TheY-variate paired with therth orderedX-variateX rn is denoted byY rn and terms the concomitant of therth order statistic. Statistics of the form are considered. The asymptotic normality ofT n is established. The asymptotic results are used to test univariate and bivariate normality, to test independence and linearity ofX andY, and to estimate regression coefficient based on complete and censored samples.  相似文献

We consider a stationary Markov renewal process whose inter-arrival time density depends multiplicatively on the distance between the past and present state of the embedded chain. This is appropriate when the jump size is governed by influences that accumulate over time. Then we can construct an estimator for the inter-arrival time density that has the parametric rate of convergence. The estimator is a local von Mises statistic. The result carries over to the corresponding semi-Markov process.  相似文献

Summary We consider a general class of varying bandwidth estimators of a probability density function. The class includes the Abramson estimator, transformation kernel density estimator (TKDE), Jones transformation kernel density estimator (JTKDE), nearest neighbour type estimator (NN), Jones-Linton-Nielsen estimator (JLN), Taylor series approximations of TKDE (TTKDE) and Simpson's formula approximations of TKDE (STKDE). Each of these estimators needs a pilot estimator. Starting with an ordinary kernel estimator , it is possible to iterate and compute a sequence of estimates , using each estimate as a pilot estimator in the next step. The first main result is a formula for the bias order. If the bandwidths used in different steps have a common orderh=h(n), the bias of is of orderh 2km ,k=1, ...,t. Hereh m is the bias order of the ideal estimator (defined by using the unknownf as pilot). The second main result is a recursive formula for the leading bias and stochastic terms in an asymptotic expansion of the density estimates. Ifm<, it is possible to make asymptotically equivalent to the ideal estimator.  相似文献
