Results illustrating the nonlinear dynamics of ultrashort laser pulse filamentation in gases are presented, with particular emphasis on the filament properties useful for developing attosecond light sources. Two aspects of ultrashort pulse filaments are specifically discussed: (i) numerical simulation results on pulse self-compression by filamentation in a gas cell filled with noble gas. Measurements of high harmonics generated by the pulse extracted from the filament allows for the detection of intensity spikes and subcycle pulses generated within the filament. (ii) Simulation results on the spontaneous formation of conical wavepackets during filamentation in gases, which in turn can be used as efficient driving pulses for the generation of high harmonics and isolated attosecond pulses.  相似文献

The filamentation of two co-propagated femtosecond (fs) laser pulses in air is studied by numerical simulation. Depending on the different initial separation distances, relative phase shift and crossing angles, simulations show attraction, fusion, repulsion and collision of the two pulses. A long plasma channel can be formed by two in-phase pulses with small separation distance and cross angle. The coupling of two laser beam becomes weaker when the separation distance or cross angle between two beams is larger. In this case, the filamentation of each pulse develops independently. Our simulation results will be helpful for understanding the effect of the initial amplitude and phase modulation of laser pulse on the filamentation characteristics.  相似文献

Using 1 kHz, 9 mJ femtosecond laser pulses, we demonstrate laser-filamentation-induced spectacular snow formation in a cloud chamber. An intense updraft of warm moist air is generated owing to the continuous heating by the high-repetition filamentation. As it encounters the cold air above, water condensation and large-sized particles spread unevenly across the whole cloud chamber via convection and cyclone like action on a macroscopic scale. This indicates that high-repetition filamentation plays a significant role in macroscopic laser-induced water condensation and snow formation.  相似文献

Filamentation-induced water condensation and snow formation are investigated using laser pulses with different chirps and pulse widths. Chirped pulses result in the laser filamentation with different spatial lengths and intensities, which has a great impact on airflow motion and snow formation. The experiments show that snow formation mainly relates to the filament intensity distribution. Negative chirped pulses produce a greater amount of snow because of higher intensity inside the filaments as compared with the positive chirped pulses.  相似文献

A simple interference model is proposed for conical emission frequency-angular spectrum formation during the filamentation of femtosecond laser pulse in a nonlinear dispersive medium. The model allows to obtain analytical expressions for frequency-angular distributions of the supercontinuum spectral components of pulses at different wavelengths in media with arbitrary material dispersion law. The model reproduces the supercontinuum frequency-angular spectrum transformation for the case of laser pulse splitting into several subpulses and for multiple refocusing of the light field in filament. Frequency-angular spectra analytically calculated from the proposed interference model are in good agreement with the results of numerical simulations performed for the filamentation of femtosecond laser pulses in fused silica.  相似文献

The standard explanation for multiple filamentation of laser pulses is that it is caused by noise in the input beam. We propose an alternative explanation that is based on deterministic vectorial (polarization) effects. We present numerical simulations in support of the vectorial-effects explanation and suggest a simple experiment for deciding whether multiple filamentation is due to vectorial effects.  相似文献

We demonstrate the generation of 10-mJ 1.5-μm few-cycle pulses from a 4-stage OPCPA system. The system is based on a fusion of femtosecond DPSS Yb technology and a picosecond Nd:YAG pump laser. In a first preliminary filamentation experiment in argon at 5 atm, we observe significant spectral broadening of the recompressed multi-mJ 1.5-μm pulses. The filamentation output spectrum supports the generation of 8 fs pulses equivalent to sub-to-cycle pulses at 1.5 μm. We foresee that our terawatt-peak-power sub-to-cycle pulse source will open the door to exciting new experiments in attosecond high-field science in the near future.

Writing conditions for the fabrication of optical waveguides in bulk fused silica glass by use of 1 kHz focused femtosecond laser pulses at 800 nm were systematically determined for different focusing geometries. The results demonstrate that waveguides can be formed based on optical breakdown, filamentation (single or multiple), or a combination of both processes, when using pulse energies lower than the threshold of structural damage. Tunable and stable ultrashort laser pulses in the visible spectrum are generated with high efficiency by four-wave mixing process during the filamentation of near-infrared and infrared laser pulses in gases. It is shown that these tunable ultrashort pulses have a very low energy fluctuation and an excellent mode quality due to the processes of intensity clamping and self-filtering in the filament.  相似文献

We systematically study the optimization of highly efficient terahertz(THz) generation in lithium niobate(LN)crystal pumped by 800 nm laser pulses with 30 fs pulse duration. At room temperature, we obtain a record optical-to-THz energy conversion efficiency of 0.43% by chirping the pump laser pulses. Our method provides a new technique for producing millijoule THz radiation in LN via optical rectification driven by joule-level Ti:sapphire laser systems, which deliver sub-50-fs pulse durations.  相似文献

Supereontinuum (SC) generation from laser filamentation in air is found to depend strongly on the pulse duration. Rainbow-like SC generation is observed only for a pulse of appropriate negative chirp that agrees with the predictions put forward by Golubtsov et al. [Quantum Electron. 33 (2003) 525]. The conversion efficiency of an 800-nm laser light to rainbow-like SC is found to be the highest for 257fs pulses with an initial negative chirp. A larger chirp will lead to filamentation surviving at longer distance.  相似文献

The interaction between femtosecond laser radiation in the filamentation mode and lithium fluoride optical ceramics is investigated experimentally. It is shown that irradiating optical ceramics based on lithium fluoride with femtosecond laser pulses in the near infrared spectral region effectively produces luminescence centers characteristic of radiation-colored single crystals.  相似文献
