A three-dimensional shock layer near the blunt surface of a fairly smooth body is analyzed asymptotically. Equations of the first approximation are obtained and justified in various cases of the limit 1, 0, ( – 1)–1M -2 0. These equations are simplified for the flow near the stagnation point of a body with double curvature and near the blunt leading edge of a sweptback wing. The results of some calculations are given and compared with the results of [17, 18] in the case of axisymmetric flow.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 5, pp. 115–126, September–October, 1980.

Summary The dielectric properties of the composite system polyurethane-sodium chloride have been measured at frequencies between 10–4 Hz and 3 · 105 Hz in the temperature range from –150 °C up to +90 dgC. Three dielectric loss mechanisms have been found; they are indicated by 1, 2 and. The activation energy of the 1-transition is 35 kcal/mole, that of the-transition 6.7 kcal/mole. The 2-loss peak was only observed at frequencies of 103 Hz and higher, forming one broad peak with the 1-loss peak at lower frequencies. In the composite materials, the- and 2-loss peaks measured at fixed frequencies were found at the same temperature. The 2-loss peak, however, was shifted to a lower temperature, due to the sodium chloride filler. Comparison of experimental data of and tan with theoretical predictions concerning the dielectric properties of composite systems showed only partial agreement. The difference mainly consisted in. the temperature shift in the tan-peak of the 1-transition.

Nonequilibrium air–water mass transfer experiments using a laboratoryscale singleair channel setup were conducted to investigate the influence of porous media and air velocity on the fate of nonaqueous phase liquids (NAPLs) under air sparging conditions. Benzene was used as a NAPL while silica sand 30/50 (dp50=0.305mm, uniformity coefficient, UC=1.41) and silica sand 70/100 (dp50=0.168mm, UC=1.64) were used as porous media. Air velocities ranged from 0 to 1.4cm/s. Mass transfer coefficients for the dissolution of NAPLs were estimated by numerical methods using a twodimensional dissolution–diffusion–volatilization model. The study showed that the presence of advective airflow in air channels controlled the spreading of the dissolved phase but the overall removal efficiency was independent of airflow rate. Removal efficiencies and dissolution rates of the NAPL were found to be strongly affected by the mean particle size of the porous media during air sparging. More than 50% reduction in the removal rate of benzene was found when silica sand 70/100 was used instead of silica sand 30/50. Mass transfer coefficients for the dissolution of benzene NAPL were estimated to be 0.0041cm/min for silica sand 70/100 and 0.227cm/min for silica sand 30/50. Increasing the air velocity from 0.6 to 1.4cm/s for silica sand 30/50 did not result in a higher removal rate. Quantitative estimation of the dissolution rates of benzene NAPL indicated that the dissolution rates (between 0.227 and 0.265cm/min) were similar in magnitude for the same porous media but different air flow rates. Based on the visualization study, air sparging may be used to control the spreading of the dissolved phase even when the glob of NAPL is several centimeters away from the air–water interface of the air channels.

A number of authors have critically examined semiempirical mixing length theories [1]. A defect of these theories is connected with the fact that the magnitude of the mixing length, which is assumed to be small in constructing the theory, turns out in experiments to be comparable with the characteristic dimensions of the flow region. Thus, the concept of volume convection [2–4] or integral diffusion [5], which is understood to be a transfer mechanism in which the friction stress is not expressed in terms of the velocity gradient, is introduced along with the concept of gradient diffusion. In addition, there are a number of experimental papers [6] in which it is shown that the turbulent friction stress cannot be equal to zero at the place in the flow where the derivative of the velocity is equal to zero. Mixing length theory does not describe this effect. It is possible to generalize mixing length theory [7–9] in a way which eliminates these defects. Flow of an incompressible fluid is considered.

This paper presents a study on the deformation of anisotropic fibrous porous media subjected to moistening by water in the liquid phase. The deformation of the medium is studied by applying the concept of effective stress. Given the structure of the medium, the displacement of the solid matrix is not taken into account with respect to the displacement of the liquid phase. The transport equations are derived from the model proposed by Narasimhan. The transport coefficients and the relation between the variation in apparent density and effective stress are obtained by test measurements. A numerical model has been established and applied for studying drip moistening of mineral wool samples capable or incapable of deformation.Nomenclature D mass diffusion coefficient [L2t–1] - e void fraction - g gravity acceleration [Lt–2] - J mass transfer density [ML–2t–1] - K hydraulic conductivity [Lt–1] - K s hydraulic conductivity of the solid phase [Lt–1] - K * hydraulic conductivity of the deformable porous medium [Lt–1] - P pressure of moistening liquid [ML–1 t–2] - S degree of saturation - t time [t] - V speed [Lt–1] - X horizontal coordinate [L] - Z vertical coordinate measured from the bottom of porous medium [L] - z z-coordinate [L] Greek Letters porosity - 1 total hydric potential [L] - g gas density [ML–3] - 1 liquid density [ML–3] - 0 apparent density [ML–3] - s density of the solid phase [ML–3] - density of the moist porous medium [ML–3] - external load [ML–1t–2] - effective stress [ML–1t–2] - bishop's parameter - matrix potential or capillary suction [L] Indices g gas - 1 moistening liquid - p direction perpendicular to fiber planes - s solid matrix - t direction parallel to fiber planes - v pore Exponent * movement of solid particles taken into account

When blunt bodies are in hypersonic flight, a high-entropy layer of gas with nonzero vorticity is formed near their surface. The transverse gradients of the entropy, density, and gas velocity in the layer are high, which makes it necessary to take into account its absorption by the boundary layer of finite thickness . This vortex interaction is usually accompanied by an increase in the heat flux q and the frictional stress on the wall compared with their values as calculated in accordance with the classical scheme of a thin boundary layer, when the parameters on the outer edge of the boundary layer are set equal to the inviscid parameters on the body. This effect has been investigated on the side surface of slender (with angle 1 to the undisturbed flow) blunt bodies in a hypersonic stream [1–3]. It is shown in the present paper that the effect can have a stronger and even qualitative influence on the flow over blunt bodies with 1 if the radius of curvature Rs of the detached shock wave on the axis is small compared with the midsection radius R of the body. It is shown that the distributions of the heat fluxes with allowance for the vorticity of the inviscid shock layer are similar in the case of slightly blunt (r0/R 0) cones with half-angles less than a critical *.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 2, pp. 50–57, March–April, 1981.

Stochastic subsurface transport theories either disregard local dispersion or take it to be constant. We offer an alternative Eulerian-Lagrangian formalism to account for both local dispersion and first-order mass removal (due to radioactive decay or biodegradation). It rests on a decomposition of the velocityv into a field-scale componentv , which is defined on the scale of measurement support, and a zero mean sub-field-scale componentv s , which fluctuates randomly on scales smaller than. Without loss of generality, we work formally with unconditional statistics ofv s and conditional statistics ofv . We then require that, within this (or other selected) working framework,v s andv be mutually uncorrelated. This holds whenever the correlation scale ofv is large in comparison to that ofv s . The formalism leads to an integro-differential equation for the conditional mean total concentration c which includes two dispersion terms, one field-scale and one sub-field-scale. It also leads to explicit expressions for conditional second moments of concentration cc. We solve the former, and evaluate the latter, for mildly fluctuatingv by means of an analytical-numerical method developed earlier by Zhang and Neuman. We present results in two-dimensional flow fields of unconditional (prior) mean uniformv . These show that the relative effect of local dispersion on first and second moments of concentration dies out locally as the corresponding dispersion tensor tends to zero. The effect also diminishes with time and source size. Our results thus do not support claims in the literature that local dispersion must always be accounted for, no matter how small it is. First-order decay reduces dispersion. This effect increases with time. However, these concentration moments c and cc of total concentrationc, which are associated with the scale below, cannot be used to estimate the field-scale concentrationc directly. To do so, a spatial average over the field measurement scale is needed. Nevertheless, our numerical results show that differences between the ensemble moments ofc and those ofc are negligible, especially for nonpoint sources, because the ensemble moments ofc are already smooth enough.

Summary This paper is devoted to a study of the flow of a second-order fluid (flowing with a small mass rate of symmetrical radial outflow m, taken negative for a net radial inflow) over a finite rotating disc enclosed within a coaxial cylinderical casing. The effects of the second-order terms are observed to depend upon two dimensionless parameters 1 and 2. Maximum values 1 and 2 of the dimensionless radial distances at which there is no recirculation, for the cases of net radial outflow (m>0) and net radial inflow (m<0) respectively, decrease with an increase in the second-order effects [represented by T(=1+2)]. The velocities at 1 and 2 as well as at some other fixed radii have been calculated for different T and the associated phenomena of no-recirculation/recirculation discussed. The change in flow phenomena due to a reversal of the direction of net radial flow has also been studied. The moment on the rotating disc increases with T.Nomenclature , , z coordinates in a cylindrical polar system - z 0 distance between rotor and stator (gap length) - =/z 0, dimensionless radial distance - =z/z 0, dimensionless axial distance - s = s/z0, dimensionless disc radius - V =(u, v, w), velocity vector - dimensionless velocity components - uniform angular velocity of the rotor - , p fluid density and pressure - P =p/(2 z 02 2 , dimensionless pressure - 1, 2, 3 kinematic coefficients of Newtonian viscosity, elastico-viscosity and cross-viscosity respectively - 1, 2 2/z 0 2 , resp. 3/z 0 2 , dimensionless parameters representing the ratio of second-order and inertial effects - m = , mass rate of symmetrical radial outflow - l a number associated with induced circulatory flow - Rm =m/(z 01), Reynolds number of radial outflow - R l =l/(z 01), Reynolds number of induced circulatory flow - Rz =z 0 2 /1, Reynolds number based on the gap - 1, 2 maximum radii at which there is no recirculation for the cases Rm>0 and Rm<0 respectively - 1(T), 2(T) 1 and 2 for different T - U 1(T) (+) = dimensionless radial velocity, Rm>0 - V 1(T) (+) = , dimensionless transverse velocity, Rm>0 - U 2(T) (–) = , dimensionless radial velocity, Rm=–Rn<0, m=–n - V 2(T) (–) = , dimensionless transverse velocity, Rm<0 - C m moment coefficient

An experimental apparatus for investigating Rayleigh-Taylor instability in the transition layer between two gases at accelerations g 105g0 (g0 is the acceleration of gravity) is described. The constantly acting acceleration is communicated to the contact zone by the compression wave formed ahead of a flame front. The linear stage of development is investigated together with the effect of the thickness of the contact zone. It is shown that on the interval 0.3 < <- ( is the wavelength of the disturbance at the edge of the contact zone) the rate of growth of the perturbation amplitude 0.50, where 0 is the amplitude growth rate for media separated by an interface with a discontinuous change of density.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 6, pp. 15–21, November–December, 1991.

Self-similar one-dimensional solutions of the Leibenzon equation c2t= zz k (z 0, k 2) are considered. Approximate solutions are constructed for the two cases in which the initial value = 1 = const > 0 and on the boundary either a constant value = 2 < 1 is maintained or the flow (directed outwards) is given. In the first problem the dependence of the boundary flow on the governing parameters is determined. A characteristic property of the types of motion in question is the existence near the boundary of a region, expanding with time, in which the flow is almost independent of the coordinate.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 5, pp. 145–150, September–October, 1991.

The effects of finite measuring volume length on laser velocimetry measurements of turbulent boundary layers were studied. Four different effective measuring volume lengths, ranging in spanwise extent from 7 to 44 viscous units, were used in a low Reynolds number (Re=1440) turbulent boundary layer with high data density. Reynolds shear stress profiles in the near-wall region show that u v strongly depends on the measuring volume length; at a given y-position, u v decreases with increasing measuring volume length. This dependence was attributed to simultaneous validations on the U and V channels of Doppler bursts coming from different particles within the measuring volume. Moments of the streamwise velocity showed a slight dependence on measuring volume length, indicating that spatial averaging effects well known for hot-films and hot-wires can occur in laser velocimetry measurements when the data density is high.List of symbols time-averaged quantity - u wall friction velocity, ( w /)1/2 - v kinematic viscosity - d p pinhole diameter - l eff spanwise extent of LDV measuring volume viewed by photomultiplier - l + non-dimensional length of measuring volume, l eff u /v - y + non-dimensional coordinate in spanwise direction, y u /v - z + non-dimensional coordinate in spanwise direction, z u /v - U + non-dimensional mean velocity, /u - u instantaneous streamwise velocity fluctuation, U 〈U - v instantaneous normal velocity fluctuation, V–V - u RMS streamwise velocity fluctuation, u 21/2 - v RMS normal velocity fluctuation, v 21/2 - Re Reynolds number based on momentum thickness, U 0/v - R uv cross-correlation coefficient, u v/u v - R12(0, 0, z) two point correlation between u and v with z-separation, <u(0, 0, 0) v (0, 0, z)>/<u(0, 0, 0) v (0, 0, 0)> - N rate at which bursts are validated by counter processor - T Taylor time microscale, u (dv/dt2)–1/2 相似文献

Nonstationary currents are examined in a dense magnetized plasma with 1, in which energy release and heat loss by thermal conduction and radiation are possible. Solutions are found in two limiting cases: ¦f¦ ¦ div (T)¦ and ¦f¦ ¦ div(T)¦ (f is the radiation intensity, is the coefficient of heat conduction, and T is the temperature). In the first case a solution was obtained of some problems of the cooling and heating of a plasma illustrated in part by the evolution in time of the temperature profile in the boundary layer. In the second case an isomorphic solution was found for an arbitrary dependence of the coefficient of heat conduction on the temperature, pressure, and magnetic field.Translated from Zhurnal Prikladnoi Mekhaniki i Tekhnicheskoi Fiziki, No. 1, pp. 3–8, January–February, 1972.The author is grateful to G. The detailed analysis of the dynamical process of coin tossing is made. Through calculations, it is illustrated how and why the result is extremely sensitive to the initial conditions. It is also shown that, as the initial height of the mass center of the coin increases, the final configuration, i.e. head or tail, becomes more and more sensitive to the initial parameters (the initial velocity angular velocity, and the initial orientation), the coefficient of the air drag, and the energy absorption factor of the surface on which the coin bounces. If we keep the head upward initially but allow a small range for the change of some other initial parameters, the frequency that the final configuration is head, would be 1 if the initial height h of the mass center is sufficiently small, and would be clo to 1/2 if h is sufficiently large. An interesting question is how this frequency changes continuously from 1 to 1/2 as h increases. Detailed calculations show that such a transition is very similar to the transition from laminar to turbulent flows. A basic difference between the transition stage and the completely random stage is indicated: In the completely random stage, the deterministic process of the individual case is extremely sensitive to the initial conditions and the dynamical parameters, out the statistical properties of the ensemble are insensitive to the small changes of the initial conditions and the dynamical parameters. On the contrary, in the transition stage, both the deterministic process of the individual case and the statistical properties of the ensemble are sensitive to the initial conditions and the dynamical parameters. The mechanism for this feature of the transition stage is the existence of the long-train structure in the parameter space. The illuminations of this analysis on some other random phenomena are discussed.

Several theoretical [1–4] and experimental [5–7] studies have been devoted to the study of the effect of distributed injection of a gaseous substance on the characteristics of the turbulent boundary layer. The primary study has been made of flow past a flat plate with gas injection. The theoretical methods are based primarily on the semiempirical theories of Prandtl [1] and Karman [2].In contrast with the previous studies, the present paper proposes a power law for the mixing length; this makes it possible to obtain velocity profiles which degenerate to the known power profiles [8] in the case of flow without blowing and heat transfer. This approach yields analytic results for flows with moderate pressure gradient.Notation x, y coordinates - U, V velocity components - density - T temperature - h enthalpy - H total enthalpy - c mass concentration - , , D coefficients of molecular viscosity, thermal conductivity, diffusion - cp specific heat - adiabatic exponent - r distance from axis of symmetry to surface - boundary layer thickness - U velocity in stream core - friction - cf friction coefficient - P Prandtl number - S Schmidt number - St Stanton number - M Mach number - j=0 plane case - j=1 axisymmetric case The indices 1 injected gas - 2 mainstream gas - w quantities at the wall - core of boundary layer - 0 flow of incompressible gas without injection - v=0 flow of compressible gas without injection - * quantities at the edge of the laminar sublayer - quantities at the initial section - turbulent transport coefficients

Summary One considers a system L[u]=0 of PDEs, quasi-linear (according to [1]) and of order m, which possesses a bicharacteristic line , as it happens in the hyperbolic case. For v=0, , –m (>0) let u(v) be a discontinuity wave of order m+v that solves the system above and whose discontinuity hypersurface includes . The corresponding transport equations along are considered. Furthermore some interesting cases are pointed out, in which these equations turn out to be mutually equivalent in a suitable sense. Some theorems are stated to compare the transport equations for the discontinuities of the above kinds, that are connected with the systems dhL[u]/dth=0 (h=0, , –m) and/or the linearization of the system L[u]=0 around any regular solution of it.

The gelation of a ceramic precursor, zirconium alkoxide, has been studied using dynamic oscillatory measurements. The gelation time is controlled by varying the concentrations of zirconium propoxide, hydrolysis with water, and acetylacetone concentration which acts as a chelating ligand. Gelation times were varied from minutes to months. The gelation time varied with zirconium concentration to the –10 power, hydrolysis to the –7 power, and ligand concentration of the –17 power. The sol-gel transition was monitored using the criteria of Winter in which GG n and tan () = tan . It is shown that the use of multiple superimposed sinusoidal waves to simultaneously measure the moduli at several frequencies is faster than using individual frequency sweep experiments. The selection of rate and strain criteria for brittle network gels is discussed in detail.
