Although the understanding of intermolecular interactions, such as hydrogen bonding, is relatively well‐developed, many additional weak interactions work both in tandem and competitively to stabilize a given crystal structure. Due to a wide array of potential applications, a substantial effort has been invested in understanding the halogen bond. Here, we explore the utility of multinuclear (13C, 14/15N, 19F, and 127I) solid‐state magnetic resonance experiments in characterizing the electronic and structural changes which take place upon the formation of five halogen‐bonded co‐crystalline product materials. Single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction (XRD) structures of three novel co‐crystals which exhibit a 1:1 stoichiometry between decamethonium diiodide (i.e., [(CH3)3N+(CH2)10N+(CH3)3][2 I?]) and different para‐dihalogen‐substituted benzene moieties (i.e., p‐C6X2Y4, X=Br, I; Y=H, F) are presented. 13C and 15N NMR experiments carried out on these and related systems validate sample purity, but also serve as indirect probes of the formation of a halogen bond in the co‐crystal complexes in the solid state. Long‐range changes in the electronic environment, which manifest through changes in the electric field gradient (EFG) tensor, are quantitatively measured using 14N NMR spectroscopy, with a systematic decrease in the 14N quadrupolar coupling constant (CQ) observed upon halogen bond formation. Attempts at 127I solid‐state NMR spectroscopy experiments are presented and variable‐temperature 19F NMR experiments are used to distinguish between dynamic and static disorder in selected product materials, which could not be conclusively established using solely XRD. Quantum chemical calculations using the gauge‐including projector augmented‐wave (GIPAW) or relativistic zeroth‐order regular approximation (ZORA) density functional theory (DFT) approaches complement the experimental NMR measurements and provide theoretical corroboration for the changes in NMR parameters observed upon the formation of a halogen bond.  相似文献

A study of the strong N?X????O?N+ (X=I, Br) halogen bonding interactions reports 2×27 donor×acceptor complexes of N‐halosaccharins and pyridine N‐oxides (PyNO). DFT calculations were used to investigate the X???O halogen bond (XB) interaction energies in 54 complexes. A simplified computationally fast electrostatic model was developed for predicting the X???O XBs. The XB interaction energies vary from ?47.5 to ?120.3 kJ mol?1; the strongest N?I????O?N+ XBs approaching those of 3‐center‐4‐electron [N?I?N]+ halogen‐bonded systems (ca. 160 kJ mol?1). 1H NMR association constants (KXB) determined in CDCl3 and [D6]acetone vary from 2.0×100 to >108 m ?1 and correlate well with the calculated donor×acceptor complexation enthalpies found between ?38.4 and ?77.5 kJ mol?1. In X‐ray crystal structures, the N‐iodosaccharin‐PyNO complexes manifest short interaction ratios (RXB) between 0.65–0.67 for the N?I????O?N+ halogen bond.  相似文献

Supramolecular capsules were assembled by neutral halogen bonding (XB) and studied in the solid state, in solution, and in the gas phase. The geometry of the highly organized capsules is shown by an X‐ray crystal structure which features the assembly of two XB hemispheres, geometrically rigidified by H‐bonding to eight MeOH molecules and encapsulation of two benzene guests. To enhance capsular association strength, tuning the XB donor is more efficient than tuning the XB acceptor, due to desolvation penalties in protic solvents, as shown for a tetraquinuclidine XB acceptor hemisphere. With a tetra(iodoethynyl) XB donor and a tetralutidine XB acceptor, the association in deuterated benzene/acetone/methanol 70:30:1 at 283 K reaches K a=(2.11±0.39)×105 m −1G =−6.9±0.1 kcal mol−1). The stability of the XB capsules in the gas phase was confirmed by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI‐MS). A new guest binding site was uncovered within the elongated iodoethynyl capsule.  相似文献

Halogen‐bonding (XB) interactions were exploited in the solution‐phase assembly of anion‐templated pseudorotaxanes between an isophthalamide‐containing macrocycle and bromo‐ or iodo‐functionalised pyridinium threading components. 1H NMR spectroscopic titration investigations demonstrated that such XB interpenetrated assemblies are more stable than analogous hydrogen bonding (HB) pseudorotaxanes. The stability of the anion‐templated halogen‐bonded pseudorotaxane architectures was exploited in the preparation of new halogen‐bonding interlocked catenane species through a Grubbs’ ring‐closing metathesis (RCM) clipping methodology. The catenanes’ anion recognition properties in the competitive CDCl3/CD3OD 1:1 solvent mixture revealed selectivity for the heavier halides iodide and bromide over chloride and acetate.  相似文献

A series of heteroditopic receptors containing halogen bond (XB) and unprecedented chalcogen bond (ChB) donors integrated into a 3,5‐bis‐triazole pyridine structure covalently linked to benzo‐15‐crown‐5 ether motifs exhibit remarkable cooperative recognition of halide anions. Multi‐nuclear 1H, 13C, 125Te and 19F NMR, ion pair binding investigations reveal sodium cation–benzo‐crown ether binding dramatically enhances the recognition of bromide and iodide halide anions, with the chalcogen bonding heteroditopic receptor notably displaying the largest enhancement of halide binding strength of over two hundred‐fold, in comparison to the halogen bonding and hydrogen bonding heteroditopic receptor analogues. DFT calculations suggest crown ether sodium cation complexation induces a polarisation of the sigma hole of ChB and XB heteroditopic receptor donors as a significant contribution to the origin of the unique cooperativity exhibited by these systems.  相似文献

127I nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) spectroscopy is established as a rapid and robust method to indicate the formation of iodine–nitrogen halogen bonds in co‐crystalline powders. Once the relevant spectral frequency range has been established, diagnostic 127I NQR spectra can be acquired in seconds. The method is demonstrated for a series of co‐crystals of 1,4‐diiodobenzene. Changes in the 127I quadrupolar coupling constant (CQ) by up to 74.4 MHz correlate with the length of the C?I donor covalent bond and inversely with the I???N halogen‐bond length. The predictive power of this technique is validated on two previously unknown co‐crystalline powders prepared mechanochemically. Single‐crystal growth via co‐sublimation and structure determination by single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction cross‐validates the findings. Natural localized molecular‐orbital analyses provide insight into the origins of the quadrupolar coupling constants.  相似文献

Molecular‐beam scattering experiments and theoretical calculations prove the nature, strength, and selectivity of the halogen bonds (XB) in the interaction of halogen molecules with the series of noble gas (Ng) atoms. The XB, accompanied by charge transfer from the Ng to the halogen, is shown to take place in, and measurably stabilize, the collinear conformation of the adducts, which thus becomes (in contrast to what happens for other Ng‐molecule systems) approximately as bound as the T‐shaped form. It is also shown how and why XB is inhibited when the halogen molecule is in the 3Πu excited state. A general potential formulation fitting the experimental observables, based on few physically essential parameters, is proposed to describe the interaction accurately and is validated by ab initio computations.  相似文献

The confined space inside a self‐assembled cage enhanced halogen bonding (XB) between iodoperfluorocarbons (XB donors) and NO3? anions or H2O molecules (XB acceptors), as confirmed by NMR spectroscopy in solution and by X‐ray crystallography in the solid state. The cavity also bound an XB donor–acceptor pair, C6F3I3 and C6H5NMe2, in a selective pairwise fashion.  相似文献

MP2/aug′‐cc‐pVTZ calculations were performed to investigate boron as an electron‐pair donor in halogen‐bonded complexes (CO)2(HB):ClX and (N2)2(HB):ClX, for X=F, Cl, OH, NC, CN, CCH, CH3, and H. Equilibrium halogen‐bonded complexes with boron as the electron‐pair donor are found on all of the potential surfaces, except for (CO)2(HB):ClCH3 and (N2)2(HB):ClF. The majority of these complexes are stabilized by traditional halogen bonds, except for (CO)2(HB):ClF, (CO)2(HB):ClCl, (N2)2(HB):ClCl, and (N2)2(HB):ClOH, which are stabilized by chlorine‐shared halogen bonds. These complexes have increased binding energies and shorter B?Cl distances. Charge transfer stabilizes all complexes and occurs from the B lone pair to the σ* Cl?A orbital of ClX, in which A is the atom of X directly bonded to Cl. A second reduced charge‐transfer interaction occurs in (CO)2(HB):ClX complexes from the Cl lone pair to the π* C≡O orbitals. Equation‐of‐motion coupled cluster singles and doubles (EOM‐CCSD) spin–spin coupling constants, 1xJ(B‐Cl), across the halogen bonds are also indicative of the changing nature of this bond. 1xJ(B‐Cl) values for both series of complexes are positive at long distances, increase as the distance decreases, and then decrease as the halogen bonds change from traditional to chlorine‐shared bonds, and begin to approach the values for the covalent bonds in the corresponding ions [(CO)2(HB)?Cl]+ and [(N2)2(HB)?Cl]+. Changes in 11B chemical shieldings upon complexation correlate with changes in the charges on B.  相似文献

N−X⋅⋅⋅O−N+ halogen-bonded systems formed by 27 pyridine N-oxides (PyNOs) as halogen-bond (XB) acceptors and two N-halosuccinimides, two N-halophthalimides, and two N-halosaccharins as XB donors are studied in silico, in solution, and in the solid state. This large set of data (132 DFT optimized structures, 75 crystal structures, and 168 1H NMR titrations) provides a unique view to structural and bonding properties. In the computational part, a simple electrostatic model (SiElMo) for predicting XB energies using only the properties of halogen donors and oxygen acceptors is developed. The SiElMo energies are in perfect accord with energies calculated from XB complexes optimized with two high-level DFT approaches. Data from in silico bond energies and single-crystal X-ray structures correlate; however, data from solution do not. The polydentate bonding characteristic of the PyNOs’ oxygen atom in solution, as revealed by solid-state structures, is attributed to the lack of correlation between DFT/solid-state and solution data. XB strength is only slightly affected by the PyNO oxygen properties [(atomic charge (Q), ionization energy (Is,min) and local negative minima (Vs,min)], as the σ-hole (Vs,max) of the donor halogen is the key determinant leading to the sequence N-halosaccharin>N-halosuccinimide>N-halophthalimide on the XB strength.  相似文献

Co‐crystallisation of, in particular, 4‐iodotetrafluorophenol with a series of secondary and tertiary cyclic amines results in deprotonation of the phenol and formation of the corresponding ammonium phenate. Careful examination of the X‐ray single‐crystal structures shows that the phenate anion develops a C?O double bond and that the C?C bond lengths in the ring suggest a Meissenheimer‐like delocalisation. This delocalisation is supported by the geometry of the phenate anion optimised at the MP2(Full) level of theory within the aug‐cc‐pVDZ basis (aug‐cc‐pVDZ‐PP on I) and by natural bond orbital (NBO) analyses. With sp2 hybridisation at the phenate oxygen atom, there is strong preference for the formation of two non‐covalent interactions with the oxygen sp2 lone pairs and, in the case of secondary amines, this occurs through hydrogen bonding to the ammonium hydrogen atoms. However, where tertiary amines are concerned, there are insufficient hydrogen atoms available and so an electrophilic iodine atom from a neighbouring 4‐iodotetrafluorophenate group forms an I???O halogen bond to give the second interaction. However, in some co‐crystals with secondary amines, it is also found that in addition to the two hydrogen bonds forming with the phenate oxygen sp2 lone pairs, there is an additional intermolecular I???O halogen bond in which the electrophilic iodine atom interacts with the C?O π‐system. All attempts to reproduce this behaviour with 4‐bromotetrafluorophenol were unsuccessful. These structural motifs are significant as they reproduce extremely well, in low‐molar‐mass synthetic systems, motifs found by Ho and co‐workers when examining halogen‐bonding interactions in biological systems. The analogy is cemented through the structures of co‐crystals of 1,4‐diiodotetrafluorobenzene with acetamide and with N‐methylbenzamide, which, as designed models, demonstrate the orthogonality of hydrogen and halogen bonding proposed in Ho’s biological study.  相似文献

In this article, a new type of halogen‐bonded complex YCCX···HMY (X = Cl, Br; M = Be, Mg; Y = H, F, CH3) has been predicted and characterized at the MP2/aug‐cc‐pVTZ level. We named it as halogen‐hydride halogen bonding. In each YCCX···HMY complex, a halogen bond is formed between the positively charged X atom and the negatively charged H atom. This new kind of halogen bond has similar characteristics to the conventional halogen bond, such as the elongation of the C? X bond and the red shift of the C? X stretch frequency upon complexation. The interaction strength of this type of halogen bond is in a range of 3.34–10.52 kJ/mol, which is smaller than that of dihydrogen bond and conventional halogen bond. The nature of the electrostatic interaction in this type of halogen bond has also been unveiled by means of the natural bond orbital, atoms in molecules, and energy decomposition analyses. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The study of micro- or nanocrystalline proteins by magic-angle spinning (MAS) solid-state NMR (SSNMR) gives atomic-resolution insight into structure in cases when single crystals cannot be obtained for diffraction studies. Subtle differences in the local chemical environment around the protein, including the characteristics of the cosolvent and the buffer, determine whether a protein will form single crystals. The impact of these small changes in formulation is also evident in the SSNMR spectra; however, the changes lead only to correspondingly subtle changes in the spectra. Here, we demonstrate that several formulations of GB1 microcrystals yield very high quality SSNMR spectra, although only a subset of conditions enable growth of single crystals. We have characterized these polymorphs by X-ray powder diffraction and assigned the SSNMR spectra. Assignments of the 13C and 15N SSNMR chemical shifts confirm that the backbone structure is conserved, indicative of a common protein fold, but side chain chemical shifts are changed on the surface of the protein, in a manner dependent upon crystal packing and electrostatic interactions with salt in the mother liquor. Our results demonstrate the ability of SSNMR to reveal minor structural differences among crystal polymorphs. This ability has potential practical utility for studying the formulation chemistry of industrial and therapeutic proteins, as well as for deriving fundamental insights into the phenomenon of single-crystal growth.  相似文献

Structures of selected 3,6‐dihalogeno‐N‐alkyl carbazole derivatives were calculated at the B3LYP/6‐311++G(3df,2pd) level of theory, and their 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) isotropic shieldings were predicted using density functional theory (DFT). The model compounds contained 9H, N‐methyl and N‐ethyl derivatives. The relativistic effect of Br and I atoms on nuclear shieldings was modeled using the spin–orbit zeroth‐order regular approximation (ZORA) method. Significant heavy atom shielding effects for the carbon atom directly bonded with Br and I were observed (~?10 and ~?30 ppm while the other carbon shifts were practically unaffected). The decreasing electronegativity of the halogen substituent (F, Cl, Br, and I) was reflected in both nonrelativistic and relativistic NMR results as decreased values of chemical shifts of carbon atoms attached to halogen (C3 and C6) leading to a strong sensitivity to halogen atom type at 3 and 6 positions of the carbazole ring. The predicted NMR data correctly reproduce the available experimental data for unsubstituted N‐alkylcarbazoles. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The synthesis of 2,3,5,6‐tetrafluoro‐4‐iodobenzyl tert‐butyl nitroxide ( 2‐I ) and its use as spin probe for the detection of halogen‐bond (XB) complexes by EPR is reported. Formation of a XB complex between 2‐I and several XB acceptors was evidenced by a significant change in the value of the benzylic hyperfine splitting upon complexation. Thermodynamic parameters for the formation of XB complex with quinuclidine were obtained by recording EPR spectra in the temperature range 203–294 K. In addition, competitive experiments allowed for the measurement of the equilibrium constant of the XB complex with a chloride anion. The proposed procedure constitutes the first direct EPR methodology providing a reliable determination of the strength of the XB bond in solution.  相似文献

Deuterium isotope effects on 13C chemical shifts are investigated in anions of 1,8‐bis(4‐toluenesulphonamido)naphthalenes together with N,N‐(naphthalene‐1,8‐diyl)bis(2,2,2‐trifluoracetamide) all with bis(1,8‐dimethylamino)napthaleneH+ as counter ion. These compounds represent both “static” and equilibrium cases. NMR assignments of the former have been revised. The NH proton is deuteriated. The isotope effects on 13C chemical shifts are rather unusual in these strongly hydrogen bonded systems between a NH and a negatively charged nitrogen atom. The formal four‐bond effects are found to be negative indicating transmission via the hydrogen bond. In addition, unusual long range effects are seen. Structures, 1H and 13C NMR chemical shifts and changes in nuclear shieldings upon deuteriation are calculated using density functional theory methods. Unconventional ionic liquid crystals in which the liquid crystallinity is enabled by halogen‐bonded supramolecular anions [CnF2 n+1‐I???I???I‐CnF2 n+1]? are reported. The material system is unique in many ways, demonstrating for the first time 1) ionic, halogen‐bonded liquid crystals, and 2) imidazolium‐based ionic liquid crystals in which the occurrence of liquid crystallinity is not driven by the alkyl chains of the cation.  相似文献

The relative contributions of halogen and hydrogen bonding to the interaction between graphitic carbon nitride monomers and halogen bond (XB) donors containing C−X and C≡C bonds were evaluated using computational vibrational spectroscopy. Conventional probes into select vibrational stretching frequencies can often lead to disconnected results. To elucidate this behavior, local mode analyses were performed on the XB donors and complexes identified previously at the M06-2X/aVDZ-PP level of theory. Due to coupling between low and high energy C−X vibrations, the C≡C stretch is deemed a better candidate when analyzing XB complex properties or detecting XB formation. The local force constants support this conclusion, as the C≡C values correlate much better with the σ-hole magnitude than their C−X counterparts. The intermolecular local stretching force constants were also assessed, and it was found that attractive forces other than halogen bonding play a supporting role in complex formation.  相似文献
