The application of phase–modulation infrared spectroscopy to the photoexcitation dynamics of conjugated polymers is described. The modulation-frequency dependencies of the intensity and phase delay of photoinduced absorption have been observed and simulated numerically on the basis of a model based on second-order kinetics involving a neutralization process between the positive and negative charge carriers (polarons) that are formed from a photogenerated interchain charge-transfer exciton (polaron pair). The rate constant of the bimolecular recombination process has been obtained. This numerical simulation is useful in analyzing the observed responses of a nonlinear system in the phase–modulation measurements.  相似文献

The dependence of the thin film morphology and excited-state dynamics for the low-bandgap donor-acceptor copolymer poly[2,6-(4,4-bis-(2-ethylhexyl)-4H-cyclopenta[2,1-b;3,4-b']-dithiophene)-alt-4,7-(2,1,3-benzothiadiazole)] (PCPDTBT) in pristine films and in blends (1:2) with [6,6]-phenyl-C(61)-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) on the use of the solvent additive 1,8-octanedithiol (ODT) is studied by solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and broadband visible and near-infrared pump-probe transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS) covering a spectral range from 500-2000 nm. The latter allows monitoring of the dynamics of excitons, bound interfacial charge-transfer (CT) states, and free charge carriers over a time range from femto- to microseconds. The broadband pump-probe experiments reveal that excitons are not only generated in the polymer but also in PCBM-rich domains. Depending on the morphology controlled by the use of solvent additives, polymer excitons undergo mainly ultrafast dissociation (<100 fs) in blends prepared without ODT or diffusion-limited dissociation in samples prepared with ODT. Excitons generated in PCBM diffuse slowly to the interface in both samples and undergo dissociation on a time scale of several tens of picoseconds up to hundreds of picoseconds. In both samples a significant fraction of the excitons creates strongly bound interfacial CT states, which exhibit subnanosecond geminate recombination. The total internal quantum efficiency loss due to geminate recombination is estimated to be 50% in samples prepared without ODT and is found to be reduced to 30% with ODT, indicating that more free charges are generated in samples prepared with solvent additives. In samples prepared with ODT, the free charges exhibit clear intensity-dependent recombination dynamics, which can be modeled by Langevin-type recombination with a bimolecular recombination coefficient of 6.3 × 10(-11) cm(3) s(-1). In samples prepared without ODT, an additional nanosecond recombination of polaron pairs is observed in conjunction with an increased intensity-independent trap-assisted nongeminate recombination of charges. Furthermore, a comparison of the triplet-induced absorption spectra of PCPDTBT with the charge-induced absorption in PCPDTBT:PCBM blends reveals that triplets have a very similar excited-state absorption spectrum compared to the free charge carriers, however, in contrast have a distinct intensity-independent lifetime. Overall, our results suggest that whether free charges or strongly bound CT states are created upon dissociation of excitons at the PCPDTBT:PCBM interface is determined instantaneously upon exciton dissociation and that once formed strongly bound CT states rapidly recombine and thus are unlikely to dissociate into free charges. The observation of a significantly larger bimolecular recombination coefficient than previously determined for poly(3-hexylthiophen-2,5-diyl):PCBM (P3HT:PCBM) and PCDTBT:PCBM samples indicates that nongeminate recombination of free charges considerably competes with charge extraction in PCPDTBT:PCBM photovoltaic devices.  相似文献

A general dynamic Monte Carlo model for exciton dissociation at a donor-acceptor interface that includes exciton delocalization and hot charge separation is developed to model the experimental behavior observed for the poly(3-hexylthiophene):fullerene system and predict the theoretical performance of future materials systems. The presence of delocalized excitons and the direct formation of separated charge pairs has been recently measured by transient photo-induced absorption experiments and has been proposed to facilitate charge separation. The excess energy of the exciton dissociation process has also been observed to have a strong correlation with the charge separation yield for a series of thiophene based polymer:fullerene systems, suggesting that a hot charge separation process is also occurring. Hot charge separation has been previously theorized as a cause for highly efficient charge separation. However, a detailed model for this process has not been implemented and tested. Here, both conceptual models are implemented into a dynamic Monte Carlo simulation and tested using a simple bilayer donor-acceptor system. We find that exciton delocalization can account for a significant reduction in geminate recombination when compared to the traditional, bound polaron pair model. In addition, the hot charge separation process could further reduce the geminate recombination, but only if the hot charge mobility is several orders of magnitude larger than the standard charge mobility.  相似文献

We explore charge recombination dynamics at electron donor‐acceptor heterojunctions, formed between a semiconductor polymer (PCDTBT) and a fullerene derivative (PC70BM), by means of combined time‐resolved photoluminescence and transient absorption spectroscopies. Following prompt exciton dissociation across the heterojunction, a subset of bound electron‐hole pairs recombines with a temperature‐independent rate distribution spanning submicrosecond timescales to produce luminescent charge‐transfer excitons (CTX). At 14 K, this slow mechanism is the dominant geminate charge recombination pathway, whereas we also observe CTX emission on subnanosecond timescales at 293 K. We thus find that at these temperatures, a fraction of the initial charge‐pair population is trapped deeply such that they only recombine slowly over a broad distribution of timescales by quantum tunneling. We identify geminate polaron pairs (GPP) as a reservoir of long‐lived localized states that repopulate the CTX up to microsecond timescales. The observation of such distributed geminate‐charge recombination highlights the importance of the molecular nature of specific donor–acceptor electronic interactions in defining the relaxation pathways of trapped GPP. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We investigate the influence of particle plasmons on exciton and charge generation and recombination processes in the blend of poly (9‐(1‐octylnonyl)‐9H‐carbazole‐benzothiadiazole‐4,7‐diyl‐2,5‐thiophenediyl) (PCDTBT) and [6,6]‐phenyl‐C70butyric acid methyl ester (PC70BM). The particle plasmons are generated from gold nanoparticles, which are embedded into PCDTBT:PC70BM blend. For the blend with gold nanoparticles, we observe enhance light harvesting. Despite the enhanced light collection, we find that the quasi‐steady‐state charge generation has not been influenced by the particle plasmons. However, the generation and recombination of long‐lived (sub‐millisecond) polaron paris have been significantly enhanced: from untrapped state in the pristine blend to the trapped state in the gold nanoparticle‐embedded blend. This result implies that the plasmon‐influenced polarons are trapped at the broadband geminate polaron pair (GPP) state. This state acts as an intermediate state, which either leads to the formation of charge transfer excitons (CTXs) or free charge carriers. In our case, the particle plasmon‐influenced polarons are trapped in the GPP state, which leads to the formation of CTXs. For this reason, we do not observe the enhanced charge generation in PCDTBT:PC70BM blend with particle plasmon resonance. Finally, we revealed that the long‐lived polarons mainly resulted from the localization by particle plasmons. The macroscopic modification in the blend film made negligible contributions to this influence. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. Phys. 2017 , 55, 940–947  相似文献

The precise mechanism and dynamics of charge generation and recombination in bulk heterojunction polymer:fullerene blend films typically used in organic photovoltaic devices have been intensively studied by many research groups, but nonetheless remain debated. In particular the role of interfacial charge-transfer (CT) states in the generation of free charge carriers, an important step for the understanding of device function, is still under active discussion. In this article we present direct optical probes of the exciton dynamics in pristine films of a prototypic polycarbazole-based photovoltaic donor polymer, namely poly[N-11'-henicosanyl-2,7-carbazole-alt-5,5-(4',7'-di-2-thienyl-2',1',3'-benzothiadiazole)] (PCDTBT), as well as the charge generation and recombination dynamics in as-cast and annealed photovoltaic blend films using methanofullerene (PC(61)BM) as electron acceptor. In contrast to earlier studies we use broadband (500-1100 nm) transient absorption spectroscopy including the previously unobserved but very important time range between 2 ns and 1 ms, which allows us not only to observe the entire charge carrier recombination dynamics but also to quantify the existing decay channels. We determine that ultrafast exciton dissociation occurs in blends and leads to two separate pools of products, namely Coulombically bound charge-transfer (CT) states and unbound (free) charge carriers. The recombination dynamics are analyzed within the framework of a previously reported model for poly(3-hexylthiophene):PCBM (Howard, I. A. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2010, 132, 14866) based on concomitant geminate recombination of CT states and nongeminate recombination of free charge carriers. The results reveal that only ~11% of the initial photoexcitations generate interfacial CT states that recombine exclusively by fast nanosecond geminate recombination and thus do not contribute to the photocurrent, whereas ~89% of excitons create free charge carriers on an ultrafast time scale that then contribute to the extracted photocurrent. Despite the high yield of free charges the power conversion efficiency of devices remains moderate at about 3.0%. This is largely a consequence of the low fill factor of devices. We relate the low fill factor to significant energetic disorder present in the pristine polymer and in the polymer:fullerene blends. In the former we observed a significant spectral relaxation of exciton emission (fluorescence) and in the latter of the polaron-induced ground-state bleaching, implying that the density of states (DOS) for both excitons and charge carriers is significantly broadened by energetic disorder in pristine PCDTBT and in its blend with PCBM. This disorder leads to charge trapping in solar cells, which in turn causes higher carrier concentrations and more significant nongeminate recombination. The nongeminate recombination has a significant impact on the IV curves of devices, namely its competition with charge carrier extraction causes a stronger bias dependence of the photocurrent of devices, in turn leading to the poor device fill factor. In addition our results demonstrate the importance of ultrafast free carrier generation and suppression of interfacial CT-state formation and question the applicability of the often used Braun-Onsager model to describe the bias dependence of the photocurrent in polymer:fullerene organic photovoltaic devices.  相似文献

By using the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model modified to include electron-electron interactions, the Brazovskii-Kirova symmetry breaking term and an external electric field, we investigate the scattering process between a negative and a positive bipolaron in a system composed of two coupled polymer chains. Our results show that the Coulomb interactions do not favor the bipolaron recombination. In the region of weak Coulomb interactions, the two bipolarons recombine into a localized excited state, while in the region of strong Coulomb interactions they can not recombine. Our calculations show that there are mainly four channels for the bipolaron recombination reaction: (1) forming a biexciton, (2) forming an excited negative polaron and a free hole, (3) forming an excited positive polaron and a free electron, (4) forming an exciton, a free electron, and a free hole. The yields for the four channels are also calculated.  相似文献

The photoelectric power conversion efficiency of polymer solar cells is till now, compared to conventional inorganic solar cells, still relatively low with maximum values ranging from 7% to 8%. This essentially relates to the existence of exciton and charge carrier loss phenomena, reducing the performance of polymer solar cells significantly. In this paper we introduce a new computer simulation technique, which permits to explore the causes of the occurrence of such phenomena at the nanoscale and to design new photovoltaic materials with optimized opto-electronic properties. Our approach consists in coupling a mesoscopic field-theoretic method with a suitable dynamic Monte Carlo algorithm, to model the elementary photovoltaic processes. Using this algorithm, we investigate the influence of structural characteristics and different device conditions on the exciton generation and charge transport efficiencies in case of a novel nanostructured polymer blend. More specifically, we find that the disjunction of continuous percolation paths leads to the creation of dead ends, resulting in charge carrier losses through charge recombination. Moreover, we observe that defects are characterized by a low exciton dissociation efficiency due to a high charge accumulation, counteracting the charge generation process. From these observations, we conclude that both the charge carrier loss and the exciton loss phenomena lead to a dramatic decrease in the internal quantum efficiency. Finally, by analyzing the photovoltaic behavior of the nanostructures under different circuit conditions, we demonstrate that charge injection significantly determines the impact of the defects on the solar cell performance.  相似文献

In earlier work we calculated the wavefunction and energy of the solvated polaron in DNA with a simple model in which the charge was taken to be on a single chain of bases at the center of the double helix. To better approximate the actual situation, we have now extended the calculations to the case in which the charge is distributed on two chains of bases, complementary to each other, one on each side of the center. The binding energy of the resulting polaron is somewhat larger than that obtained for the single-chain polaron, the result of each chain of the polaron being closer to some of the polarization charge it induces. Carrying out the calculations for a number of different sequences, we find that the polaron wavefunction is predominantly on one of the two chains, this usually being the one on which the charge was originally placed, despite the availability of lower energy sites on the other chain. This finding is in agreement with recent experiments of Schuster's group(Joy, A.; Ghosh, A. K.; Schuster, G. B. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2006, 128, 5346-5347). Thus, in contradiction to the ideas of many researchers, there is no transport in which a hole zigzags from one chain to the other, as has been suggested for a sequence of guanines and cytosines (GCGCGC....), for example.  相似文献

General questions about hole transport and bimolecular recombination of charge carriers in molecularly doped polycarbonate with a low dopant concentration (10 wt %) are considered. The experiment is performed via a radiation-induced time-of-flight technique with bulk generation of charge carriers. Transient-current curves are calculated numerically via a multiple-trapping model. There is good agreement between the calculated and experimental results on the transient-current waveform. Nonequilibrium hole transport is observed in the studied molecularly doped polymer, and the bimolecular recombination is close to the Langevin recombination as described by the multiple-trapping model.  相似文献

Polaron dynamics in a system of two randomly coupled polymer chains is simulated using a nonadiabatic evolution method. The simulations are performed within the framework of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model modified to include disordered interchain interactions and an external electric field. By analysing the polaron velocity statistically, we find that the polaron motion is determined by the competition between the electric field and the disordered interchain interactions. Polaron dynamics are classified into two types, weak-coupling dynamics and strong-coupling dynamics. It is found that the strength of interchain interactions is the dominant factor controlling charge propagation in weak-coupling dynamics, whereas the effects of disorder are dominant in strong-coupling dynamics. The charge carriers tend to have higher mobility for stronger interchain coupling, and interchain coupling disorder can be favorable for charge transport depending on the coupling strength and the electric field.  相似文献

Photo-induced carrier processes at the heteromolecular interface of N,N'-dioctyl-3,4,9,10-perylenedicarboximide (PTCDI-C(8)) and quaterrylene (QT) on a molecular scale were examined by optical and photoelectron spectroscopy. The energy level alignments of the molecules were determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and the optical absorption spectra for detailed investigation of the photo-induced carrier process were analysed. A reduction in photoluminescence from PTCDI-C(8) on QT was observed, clearly demonstrating that the excitons generated in the PTCDI-C(8) layer are effectively dissociated at the heteromolecular interface. One important factor inducing this effective charge dissociation is the highly ordered molecular packing, which acts to increase the exciton diffusion length. Moreover, a specific increase in the photoluminescence excitation spectrum was observed around 3 eV, indicating that simultaneous exciton generation in both the QT and PTCDI-C(8) layers effectively suppresses such charge dissociation of the excitons. In other words, the existence of excitons in each molecule at the heteromolecular interface and HOMO-LUMO level alignment at the interface play an essential role in charge dissociation. Our results provide a striking insight into intermolecular interactions in the carrier process at the heteromolecular interface such as exciton generation, the recombination and dissociation processes, and the photovoltaic effect in organic semiconductors.  相似文献

The recombination kinetics of photogenerated charge carriers in perylene-3, 4, 9, 10-tetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA) and copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) thin films grown by organic molecular beam deposition have been studied using transient absorption spectroscopy. Optical excitation is observed to generate long-lived polaron states, which exhibit power law recombination dynamics on time scales from microseconds to milliseconds. Studies as a function of excitation density and temperature, and comparison between heterostructures and PTCDA single layers, all indicate that this power law behavior results from trapping of PTCDA- polarons in localized states, with an estimated trap state density of approximately 6 x 10(17) polarons cm(-3). This recombination behavior is found to be remarkably similar to that previously observed for polymer/fullerene blends, suggesting that it may be generic to a range of semiconducting materials.  相似文献

We report herein a comparison of the photophysics of a series of polythiophenes with ionization potentials ranging from 4.8 to 5.6 eV as pristine films and when blended with 5 wt % 1-(3-methoxycarbonyl)propyl-1-phenyl-[6,6]C61 (PCBM). Three polymers are observed to give amorphous films, attributed to a nonplanar geometry of their backbone while the other five polymers, including poly(3-hexylthiophene), give more crystalline films. Optical excitation of the pristine films of the amorphous polymers is observed by transient absorption spectroscopy to give rise to polymer triplet formation. For the more crystalline pristine polymers, no triplet formation is observed, but rather a short-lived (approximately 100 ns), broad photoinduced absorption feature assigned to polymer polarons. For all polymers, the addition of 5 wt % PCBM resulted in 70-90% quenching of polymer photoluminescence (PL), indicative of efficient quenching of polythiophene excitons. Remarkably, despite this efficient exciton quenching, the yield of dissociated polymer+ and PCBM- polarons, assayed by the appearance of a long-lived, power-law decay phase assigned to bimolecular recombination of these polarons, was observed to vary by over 2 orders of magnitude depending upon the polymer employed. In addition to this power-law decay phase, the blend films exhibited short-lived decays assigned, for the amorphous polymers, to neutral triplet states generated by geminate recombination of bound radical pairs and, for the more crystalline polymers, to the direct observation of the geminate recombination of these bound radical pairs to ground. These observations are discussed in terms of a two-step kinetic model for charge generation in polythiophene/PCBM blend films analogous to that reported to explain the observation of exciplex-like emission in poly(p-phenylenevinylene)-based blend films. Remarkably, we find an excellent correlation between the free energy difference for charge separation (deltaG(CS)rel) and yield of the long-lived charge generation, with efficient charge generation requiring a much larger deltaG(CS)rel than that required to achieve efficient PL quenching. We suggest that this observation is consistent with a model where the excess thermal energy of the initially formed polaron pairs is necessary to overcome their Coulombic binding energy. This observation has important implications for synthetic strategies to optimize organic solar cell performance, as it implies that, at least devices based on polythiophene/PCBM blend films, a large deltaG(CS)rel (or LUMO level offset) is required to achieve efficient charge dissociation.  相似文献

Despite the central role of light absorption and the subsequent generation of free charge carriers in organic and hybrid organic-inorganic photovoltaics, the precise process of this initial photoconversion is still debated. We employ a novel broadband (UV-Vis-NIR) transient absorption spectroscopy setup to probe charge generation and recombination in the thin films of the recently suggested hybrid material combination poly(3-hexylthiophene)/silicon (P3HT/Si) with 40 fs time resolution. Our approach allows for monitoring the time evolution of the relevant transient species under various excitation intensities and excitation wavelengths. Both in regioregular (RR) and regiorandom (RRa) P3HT, we observe an instant (<40 fs) creation of singlet excitons, which subsequently dissociate to form polarons in 140 fs. The quantum yield of polaron formation through dissociation of delocalized excitons is significantly enhanced by adding Si as an electron acceptor, revealing ultrafast electron transfer from P3HT to Si. P3HT/Si films with aggregated RR-P3HT are found to provide free charge carriers in planar as well as in bulk heterojunctions, and losses are due to nongeminate recombination. In contrast for RRa-P3HT/Si, geminate recombination of bound carriers is observed as the dominant loss mechanism. Site-selective excitation by variation of pump wavelength uncovers an energy transfer from P3HT coils to aggregates with a 1/e transfer time of 3 ps and reveals a factor of 2 more efficient polaron formation using aggregated RR-P3HT compared to disordered RRa-P3HT. Therefore, we find that polymer structural order rather than excess energy is the key criterion for free charge generation in hybrid P3HT/Si solar cells.  相似文献

Conjugated polymers have attracted considerable attention in the last few decades due to their potential for optoelectronic applications. A key step that needs optimisation is charge carrier separation following photoexcitation. To understand better the dynamics of the exciton prior to charge separation, we have performed simulations of the formation and dynamics of localised excitations in single conjugated polymer strands. We use a nonadiabatic molecular dynamics method which allows for the coupled evolution of the nuclear degrees of freedom and of multiconfigurational electronic wavefunctions. We show the relaxation of electron-hole pairs to form excitons and oppositely charged polaron pairs and discuss the modifications to the relaxation process predicted by the inclusion of the Coulomb interaction between the carriers. The issue of charge photogeneration in conjugated polymers in dilute solution is also addressed.  相似文献

We report on the ultrafast photoinduced charge separation processes in varying compositions of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) blended with the electron acceptor [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM). Through the use of time-resolved terahertz spectroscopy, the time- and frequency-dependent complex photoconductivity is measured for samples with PCBM weight fractions (WPCBM) of 0, 0.2, 0.5, and 0.8. By analysis of the frequency-dependent complex conductivity, both the charge carrier yield and the average charge carrier mobility have been determined analytically and indicate a short (<0.2 nm) carrier mean free path and a suppressed long-range transport that is characteristic of carrier localization. Studies on pure films of P3HT demonstrate that charge carrier generation is an intrinsic feature of the polymer that occurs on the time scale of the excitation light, and this is attributed to the dissociation of bound polaron pairs that reside on adjacent polymer chains due to interchain charge transfer. Both interchain and interfacial charge transfer contribute to the measured photoconductivity from the blended samples; interfacial charge transfer increases as a function of increasing PCBM. The addition of PCBM to the polymer films surprisingly does not dramatically increase the production of charge carriers within the first 2 ps. However, charge carriers in the 0.2 and 0.5 blended films survive to much longer times than those in the P3HT and 0.8 films.  相似文献

The donor-acceptor interface plays a critically important role in determining the power conversion efficiency of organic solar cells via controlling charge separation (CS) and recombination (CR) processes. Here, we combine the electronic structure calculations with electron transfer rate theory to clarify the CS and CR processes in ThQs-C60 /PDIxCN2 donor-acceptor complexes. The results reveal that in ThQs-PDIxCN2 the CS comes from both the dissociations of photo-induced singlet exciton and singlet fission-induced triplet exciton with a high efficiency, whereas in ThQs-C60 only the singlet exciton dissociation can take place because the triplet exciton lies below the charge-transfer exciton. However, very high CR rates in ThQs-PDIxCN2 obliterate the benefit of fast CS, inversely leading to the ThQ-C60 complex with a better cell efficiency. The present results are consistent with experimental observation and may furnish a possible patten to improve the overall conversion efficiency. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

The synthesis, steady-state spectroscopy, and transient absorption spectroscopy of DNA conjugates possessing both stilbene electron donor and electron acceptor chromophores are described. These conjugates are proposed to form nicked DNA dumbbell structures in which a stilbenedicarboxamide acceptor and stilbenediether donor are separated by variable numbers of A-T or G-C base pairs. The nick is located either adjacent to one of the chromophores or between two of the bases. Thermal dissociation profiles indicate that stable structures are formed possessing as few as two A-T base pairs. Circular dichroism (CD) spectra in the base pair region are characteristic of B-DNA duplex structures, whereas CD spectra at longer wavelengths display two bands attributed to exciton coupling between the two stilbenes. The sign and intensity of these bands are dependent upon both the distance between the chromophores and the dihedral angle between their transition dipoles [Deltaepsilon approximately Rda(-2) sin(2theta)]. Pulsed laser excitation of the stilbenediamide results in creation of the acceptor-donor radical ion pair, which decays via charge recombination. The dynamics of charge separation and charge recombination display an exponential distance dependence, similar to that observed previously for systems in which guanine serves as the electron donor. Unlike exciton coupling between the stilbenes, there is no apparent dependence of the charge-transfer rates upon the dihedral angle between donor and acceptor stilbenes. The introduction of a single G-C base pair between the donor and acceptor results in a change in the mechanism for charge separation from single step superexchange to hole hopping.  相似文献
