_The effect of surface treatment on mechanical properties of carbon fibers has been investigated by application of plasma polymerization of selected monomers in the vapor phase. The role of the fiber-matrix interface on carbon fiber-reinforced epoxy resin composites has also been studied. Composites have been prepared separately by the use of plasma-modified and unmodified carbon fibers in the epoxy resin matrix. The mechanical properties of carbon fibers (Hercules and Grafil) as well as of fiber/epoxy composites were examined by using single filament and three-point bending tests, respectively. It was observed that plasma polymerization treatment at selected plasma conditions led to significant improvement of interlaminar shear and flexural strength values of composites.  相似文献

The incorporation of nanotube-covered fibers in continuous fiber/epoxy composites has been shown to influence the mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties of the composite. Increased interlaminar shear stress, flexural strength and modulus have been reported in such composites over composites containing bare fibers. In this study, the microstructure and interfacial shear strength (ISS) of continuous silicon carbide fiber/epoxy composites with and without nanotubes grown from the SiC fiber surface were investigated with micro-Raman spectroscopy (MRS) and microscopy. The fibers with nanotubes grown from the surface were found to have a reduced ISS compared with the bare fibers. Electron microscopy showed good wetting of epoxy in the nanotube forests, but poor attachment of the nanotube forests to the fibers. These results suggest that the mechanism leading to improvements in bulk composite properties is not due to an improvement in the fiber/matrix ISS.  相似文献

Functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes were successfully deposited on carbon fibers using four different techniques including dip coating, hand layup, spray up and electrophoretic deposition (EPD). A uniform coating of nanotubes was achieved from EPD in comparison to other coating techniques. Later nanotube-coated fibers by EPD were introduced in epoxy resin to investigate interfacial mechanical properties of the developed hierarchical composites by vacuum bagging technique. The increases in flexural and interlaminar shear properties up to 15% and 18% were observed in composites containing nanotube-coated carbon fibers than composites with virgin carbon fibers, respectively. Microscopic observation revealed the proper impregnation of multiscale reinforcements, i.e., carbon fibers and carbon nanotubes, in resin along with the modification of fiber/matrix interface due to the presence of nanotubes at interface. Finally, the mechanisms for improved mechanical properties were identified along with the presentation of a schematic model for better understanding of the improved performance of hierarchical composite after depositing uniformly dispersed nanotubes on carbon fibers.  相似文献

The surfaces of kenaf fibers were treated with three different silane coupling agents. 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxy silane (GPS), 3-aminopropyltriethoxy silane (APS), and 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxy silane (MPS). Among them, the most effective one for the property improvement was GPS when it was applied to the kenaf fiber surfaces at 0.5 wt%. Thermoplastic polypropylene (PP) and thermosetting unsaturated polyester (UPE) matrix composites with chopped kenaf fibers untreated and treated at different GPS concentrations from 0.1 wt% to 5 wt% were fabricated using compression molding technique. The present study demonstrates that the interfacial, flexural, tensile, and dynamic mechanical properties of both kenaf/PP and kenaf/UPE composites importantly depend on the GPS treatments done at different concentrations. The greatest property improvement of both thermoplastic and thermosetting polymer composites was obtained with the silane treatment at 0.5 wt% and the mechanical properties were comparable with E-glass composites prepared the same polymer matrix under the corresponding fiber length and fiber loading. The results also agreed with each other with regard to their interfacial shear strength, flexural properties, tensile properties, storage modulus, with support of fracture surfaces of the composites.  相似文献

A novel polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane containing phosphorus and boron (PB-POSS) was synthesized. The resulting PB-POSS and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were incorporated into an epoxy resin (EP) to prepare PB-POSS/MWCNTs/EP composites through a solution mixing method. The synergistic effect of MWCNTs and PB-POSS on the thermal and mechanical properties and the flame retardancy of these flame retardant composites were studied. The experimental results showed that the introduction of PB-POSS or MWCNTs further improved the LOI values of the epoxy resin, and the highest LOI value (32.8%) was obtained for the formulation containing 14.6 wt% PB-POSS and 0.4 wt% MWCNTs. In addition, the incorporation of both PB-POSS and MWCNTs significantly improved the thermal and mechanical properties of the composites. The mechanical properties of composites containing 14.7 wt% PB-POSS and 0.3 wt% MWCNTs reached the maximum. The impact strength and flexural strength increased by 42% and 7%, respectively, compared to the neat epoxy resin. Thus, a combination of PB-POSS and MWCNTs in the appropriate ratio could effectively enhance the thermal and mechanical properties and the flame retardancy of the epoxy resin matrix.  相似文献

The effect of oxygen plasma treatment on the non-equilibrium dynamic adsorption of the carbon fabric reinforcements in RTM process was studied. 5-Dimethylamino-1-naphthalene-sulfonylchloride (DNS-Cl) was attached to the curing agent to study the change of curing agent content in the epoxy resin matrix. Steady state fluorescence spectroscopy (FS) analysis was used to study this changes in the epoxy resin at the inlet and outlet of the RTM mould, and XPS was used to study the chemical changes on the carbon fiber surfaces introduced by plasma treatment. The interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and flexural strength were also measured to study the effects of this non-equilibrium dynamic adsorption progress on the mechanical properties of the end products. FS analysis shows that the curing agent adsorbed onto the fiber surface preferentially for untreated carbon fiber, the curing agent content in the resin matrix maintain unchanged after plasma treatment for 3 min and 5 min, but after oxygen plasma treatment for 7 min, the epoxy resin adsorbed onto the fiber surface preferentially. XPS analysis indicated that the oxygen plasma treatment successfully increased some polar functional groups concentration on the carbon fiber surfaces, this changes on the carbon fiber surfaces can change the adsorption ability of carbon fiber to the resin and curing agent. The mechanical properties of the composites were correlated to this results.  相似文献

Curing behavior of amino-functionalized carbon nanotubes (ACNT) used as reinforcing agent in epoxy resin has been examined by thermal analysis. Experiments performed as per supplier’s curing conditions showed that modification of the curing schedule influences the thermo-mechanical properties of the nanocomposites. Specifically, the glass transition temperature (Tg) of ACNT-reinforced composites increased likely due to the immobility of polymer molecules, held strongly by amino carbon nanotubes. Further, a set of composites were prepared by implementing the experimentally determined optimal curing schedule to examine its effect on the mechanical properties of different GFRP compositions, while focusing primarily on reinforced ACNT and pristine nanotube (PCNT) matrix with silane-treated glass fibers. From the silane treatment of glass fibers in ACNT matrix composition it has been observed that amino silane is much better amongst all the mechanical (tensile and flexural) properties studied. This is because of strong interface between amino silane-treated glass fibers and modified epoxy resin containing uniformly dispersed amino-CNTs. On the other hand, PCNT GFRP composites with epoxy silanes demonstrated enhanced results for the mechanical properties under investigation which may be attributed to the presence of strong covalent bonding between epoxy silane of glass fiber and epoxy–amine matrix.  相似文献

In this article, polyimide (PI) fibers were modified by alkali treatment, and PI fiber-reinforced epoxy composites were fabricated. The effects of different alkali treatment times on the surface properties of the PI fibers and the adhesion behaviors of PI fiber/epoxy composites were studied. The surface morphologies, chemical compositions, mechanical properties, and surface free energy of the PI fibers were characterized by atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, single-fiber tensile strength analysis, and dynamic contact angle analysis, respectively. The results show that alkali treatment plays an important role in the improvement of the surface free energy and the wettability of PI fibers. We also found that, after the 3 min, 30 °C, 20 wt% NaOH solution treatment, the fibers possessed good mechanical properties and surface activities, and the interlaminar shear strength of the composites increased to 64.52 MPa, indicating good interfacial adhesion properties.  相似文献

A new method of silane treatment of nanoclays is reported where in the clay is nanodispersed in hydrolyzed silanes. The surface functionalization of Cloisite® 15A nanoclay has been carried out using two different silane coupling agents: 3-aminopropyltriethoxy silane and 3-glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxy silane using varied amounts of silane coupling agents, e.g. 10, 50, 200, and 400 wt% of clay. The surface modification of Cloisite® 15A has been confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The modified clays were then dispersed in epoxy resin, and glass fiber-reinforced epoxy clay laminates were manufactured using vacuum bagging technique. The fiber-reinforced epoxy clay nanocomposites containing silane modified clays have been characterized using small angle X-ray scattering, transmission electron spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. The results indicate that the silane treatment of nanoclay aided the exfoliation of nanoclay and also led to an increase in mechanical properties. The optimized amount of silane coupling agents was 200 wt%. The nanocomposites containing clay modified in 200 wt% of silanes exhibited an exfoliated morphology, improved tensile strength, flexural modulus, and flexural strength. The improved interfacial bonding between silane modified nanoclays and epoxy matrix was also evident from significant increase in elongation at break.  相似文献

Adequate stress transfer between the inorganic reinforcement and surrounding polymeric matrix is essential for achieving enhanced structural integrity and extended lifetime performance of fiber-reinforced composites. The insertion of an elastomeric interlayer helps increase the stress-transfer capabilities across the fiber/matrix interface and considerably reduces crack initiation phenomena at the fiber ends. In this study, admicellar polymerization is used to modify the fiber/matrix interface in glass woven fabric composites by forming thickness-controlled poly(styrene-co-isoprene) coatings. These admicellar interphases have distinct characteristics (e.g. topology and surface coverage) depending on the surfactant/monomer ratios used during the polymerization reaction. Overall, the admicellar coatings have a positive effect on the mechanical response of resin transfer molded, E-glass/epoxy parts. For instance, ultimate tensile strength of composites with admicellar sizings improved 50–55% over the control-desized samples. Interlaminar shear strength also showed increases ranging from 18 to 38% over the same control group. Interestingly, the flexural properties of these composites proved sensitive to the type of interphase formed for various admicellar polymerization conditions. Higher surface coverage and film connectedness in admicellar polymeric sizings are observed to enhance stress transfer at the interfacial region.  相似文献

The objective of this work was to improve the interlaminar shear strength of carbon fiber/epoxy composites by determining the effect on it of the processing parameters of the cured composites system, i.e., temperature, content of curing agent, and heating rate. Taguchi methodology and analysis of variance were applied for optimizing and statistically determining the significant factors that influenced the mechanical properties of the composites. It was found that the temperature and content of curing agent were equally the primary significant factors in controlling the interlaminar shear strength of the composites. Also, the correlation between water absorption and mechanical properties of the composites was investigated.  相似文献

Banana fiber (BF)-reinforced low-density polyethylene (LDPE) unidirectional composites were fabricated by the compression molding process with 40 wt% fiber loading. The fibers were modified with methylacrylate (MA) mixed with methanol (MeOH) along with 2% benzyl peroxide under thermal curing method at different temperatures (50–90 °C) for different curing times (10–50 min) in order to have better compatibility with the matrix. The effect of fiber surface modification on the mechanical properties (tensile and impact properties) of the composites were evaluated. Monomer concentration, curing temperature, and curing time were optimized in terms of polymer loading and mechanical properties. The mechanical properties were found to be improved based on the improved interaction between the reinforcement and the matrix. Optimized BFs were again treated with 2–5 wt% starch solutions and composites made of 4% starch treated BF showed the highest mechanical properties than that of MA treated composites. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was performed to get an insight into the morphology of the composites. Water uptake and soil degradation test of the composites were also investigated.  相似文献

Interfacial modification for carbon fiber (CF) reinforced polyarylacetylene (PAA) resin, a kind of non-polar, was investigated. The high carbon phenolic resin was used as coating to treat the surface of CF after oxidation. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) with force modulation mode was used to analyze the interphase of composite. The interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and mechanical properties of CF/PAA composites were also measured. It was found that the CF/PAA composites treated with oxidation and coating after oxidation had transition area between carbon fiber and PAA resin. The existence of transition area led to the improvement of interfacial performance of composites. Specially, the thickness and stiffness of interphase of composite treated with coating after oxidation were more suitable for CF/PAA composites. Thus, the composite treated with coating after oxidation had the highest value of ILSS and the best mechanical properties.  相似文献

The preparation, crystallization behavior, and fiber structure and properties of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) epoxy resin composite fiber were studied by means of differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), X‐ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and tensile testing. The morphology showed a different behavior from pure polyethylene (PE) fiber. The fiber mechanical properties, creep behavior, and thermal properties of UHMWPE fiber can be improved by adding epoxy resin. It's believed that the epoxy can serve as a physical cross‐linking agent to limit the motion or migration of PE molecules and consequently improve the fiber creep property. However, when the content of epoxy resin is higher than 5 wt%, all of the behavior and properties deteriorate.  相似文献

This study is focused on fabrication and characterization of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) reinforced epoxy composites to understand variation of mechanical and thermal properties. Samples were prepared by infusing both amine functionalized and non-functionalized MWCNT into commercially available EL-350 epoxy resin. Flexure, quasi-static compression and high strain rate (HSR) tests were performed with 0.1%, 0.2% and 0.3% of MWCNTs to observe variation in mechanical properties. The optimum loading was found at 0.2%. Nanocomposites with amine functionalized MWCNTs showed better properties compared to that with unmodified MWCNTs. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis was performed to confirm an improvement in dispersion with functionalization. Thermal properties were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA).  相似文献

The mechanical properties of carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites depend upon fiber-matrix interfacial properties. To improve the mechanical properties of ?bers/PTFE composites without sacri?cing tensile strength of ?bers, graphene oxide (GO) was introduced onto the surface of CFs by chemical vapour deposition (CVD). This hybrid coating increased the wettability and surface roughness of carbon fibers, which led to improved affinity between the carbon fibers and PTFE matrix. The resulting hybrid-coated carbon fiber-reinforced composites showed an enhancement in the short beam strength compared to un-coated carbon fiber composites. Meanwhile, a signi?cant increase of interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), interface shear strength tests (IFSS) and impact property were achieved in the 5-min-modi?ed CFs.  相似文献

Diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) epoxy resin was modified with high molecular weight poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). Morphological variations of a 2 wt% PMMA-modified epoxy mixture were studied by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A PMMA-epoxy blend cured at 100°C revealed that a secondary phase morphology was observed in both epoxy and PMMA phases from the early stages of the phase separation process. A morphology consisting of a rough striated continuous phase along with large smooth regions was observed by SEM, confirming the secondary phase separation. The dynamic mechanical thermal analysis showed that the PMMA modification of epoxy at such a low PMMA concentration of 2 wt% has no major influence on the glass transition temperature of the epoxy-rich phase. The PMMA-epoxy blend showed a slight increase in the flexural properties and the fracture toughness.  相似文献

A novel, simple and cost-effective method, which is capable of easily tailoring the dispersion of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), was developed here to fabricate the MWCNT–glass fiber fabric (MWCNT–GFf) multiscale composites with tunable mechanical properties. MWCNTs were dispersed into the commercial GFfs through the combined effect of the ultrasound and amino silane (AS) firstly, followed by a resin infusion process. By tuning the ultrasonic power and AS concentration, it is possible to control the MWCNTs dispersion level and subsequently mechanical properties of resultant composite. Making use of optimal dispersion conditions, which involves the optimal combination of ultrasonic power and AS concentration, the interlaminar shear strength of MWCNT–GFf reinforced composites was dramatically increased by 40.5%, and the storage modulus in the glassy region and rubbery region was improved by 27.7% and 125.0%, respectively. The work demonstrates the great promise of this novel method toward practical, industrial application in manufacturing fiber-reinforced composites with superior mechanical properties.  相似文献

Multi-scale hybrid composite laminates of epoxy/carbon fiber (CF) reinforced with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were fabricated in an autoclave. For laminate fabrication, 0.5 wt% of pristine MWCNTs or silane-functionalized MWNCTs (f-MWCNTs) were dispersed into a diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A epoxy system and applied on the woven carbon fabric. The neat epoxy/CF composite and the MWCNTs-reinforced epoxy/CF hybrid composites were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), thermomechanical analysis (TMA), tensile testing, and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). A significant improvement in initial decomposition temperature and glass transition temperature of epoxy/CF composite was observed when reinforced with 0.5 wt% of f-MWCNTs. The coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), measured by TMA, diminished by 22% compared to the epoxy/CF composite, indicating an improvement in dimensional stability of the hybrid composite. No significant improvement in tensile properties of either MWCNTs/epoxy/CF composites was observed compared to those of the neat epoxy/CF composite.  相似文献

Biodegradable composites made from bagasse fiber and biodegradable resin were fabricated and the flexural properties of the composites investigated in terms of the effects of fiber length, fiber volume fraction, and different alkali treatments of the bagasse fibers. The flexural properties of the composites increased with the increase in fiber length but decreased below the critical fiber length. The flexural properties increased with the increase in fiber volume fraction. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) micrographs showed that compression of the cellulose structure of bagasse fiber after preparation could have caused enhancement in the flexural properties. Furthermore, when comparing the effects of different alkali treatments of the bagasse fibers, maximum improvement in the flexural properties was observed for the 1% NaOH solution treated fiber composites. After alkali treatment, fibrillation occurred and the surface of the treated fibers became finer; this could contribute to improvement in the fiber‐matrix adhesion and result in enhancing the flexural properties.  相似文献
