Methods for solving the educational testing problem which arises from statistics are considered. The problem is to find lower bounds for the reliability of the total score on a test (or subtests) whose items are not parallel using data from a single test administration. We formulate the problem as an optimization problem with a linear objective function and semidefinite constraints. We maintain exact primal and dual feasibility during the course of the algorithm. The search direction is found using an inexact Gauss–Newton method rather than a Newton method on a symmetrized system. Computational results illustrating the robustness of the algorithm are successfully exploited. We present a successive linearization method with a trust region-type globalization for the solution of nonlinear semidefinite programs. At each iteration, the method solves a quadratic semidefinite program, which can be converted to a linear semidefinite program with a second order cone constraint. A subproblem of this kind can be solved quite efficiently by using some recent software for semidefinite and second-order cone programs. The method is shown to be globally convergent under certain assumptions. Numerical results on some nonlinear semidefinite programs including optimization problems with bilinear matrix inequalities are reported to illustrate the behaviour of the proposed method.The research of the fourth author was supported in part by a Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research from Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. A strong duality which states that the optimal values of the primal convex problem and its Lagrangian dual problem are equal (i.e. zero duality gap) and the dual problem attains its maximum is a corner stone in convex optimization. In particular it plays a major role in the numerical solution as well as the application of convex semidefinite optimization. The strong duality requires a technical condition known as a constraint qualification (CQ). Several CQs which are sufficient for strong duality have been given in the literature. In this note we present new necessary and sufficient CQs for the strong duality in convex semidefinite optimization. These CQs are shown to be sharper forms of the strong conical hull intersection property (CHIP) of the intersecting sets of constraints which has played a critical role in other areas of convex optimization such as constrained approximation and error bounds. In this we paper we study techniques for generating valid convex constraints for mixed 0-1 conic programs. We show that many of the techniques developed for generating linear cuts for mixed 0-1 linear programs, such as the Gomory cuts, the lift-and-project cuts, and cuts from other hierarchies of tighter relaxations, extend in a straightforward manner to mixed 0-1 conic programs. We also show that simple extensions of these techniques lead to methods for generating convex quadratic cuts. Gomory cuts for mixed 0-1 conic programs have interesting implications for comparing the semidefinite programming and the linear programming relaxations of combinatorial optimization problems, e.g. we show that all the subtour elimination inequalities for the traveling salesman problem are rank-1 Gomory cuts with respect to a single semidefinite constraint. Semidefinite programs are a class of optimization problems that have been studied extensively during the past 15 years. Semidefinite programs are naturally related to linear programs, and both are defined using deterministic data. Stochastic programs were introduced in the 1950s as a paradigm for dealing with uncertainty in data defining linear programs. In this paper, we introduce stochastic semidefinite programs as a paradigm for dealing with uncertainty in data defining semidefinite programs.The work of this author was supported in part by the U.S. Army Research Office under Grant DAAD 19-00-1-0465. Kernel functions play an important role in the design and analysis of primal-dual interior-point algorithms. They are not only used for determining the search directions but also for measuring the distance between the given iterate and the μ-center for the algorithms. In this paper we present a unified kernel function approach to primal-dual interior-point algorithms for convex quadratic semidefinite optimization based on the Nesterov and Todd symmetrization scheme. The iteration bounds for large- and small-update methods obtained are analogous to the linear optimization case. Moreover, this unifies the analysis for linear, convex quadratic and semidefinite optimizations.  相似文献

Positive semidefinite rank (PSD-rank) is a relatively new complexity measure on matrices, with applications to combinatorial optimization and communication complexity. We first study several basic properties of PSD-rank, and then develop new techniques for showing lower bounds on the PSD-rank. All of these bounds are based on viewing a positive semidefinite factorization of a matrix M as a quantum communication protocol. These lower bounds depend on the entries of the matrix and not only on its support (the zero/nonzero pattern), overcoming a limitation of some previous techniques. We compare these new lower bounds with known bounds, and give examples where the new ones are better. As an application we determine the PSD-rank of (approximations of) some common matrices.  相似文献

We present semidefinite relaxations for unconstrained non-convex quadratic mixed-integer optimization problems. These relaxations yield tight bounds and are computationally easy to solve for medium-sized instances, even if some of the variables are integer and unbounded. In this case, the problem contains an infinite number of linear constraints; these constraints are separated dynamically. We use this approach as a bounding routine in an SDP-based branch-and-bound framework. In case of a convex objective function, the new SDP bound improves the bound given by the continuous relaxation of the problem. Numerical experiments show that our algorithm performs well on various types of non-convex instances.  相似文献

This paper presents new approximation bounds for trilinear and biquadratic optimization problems over nonconvex constraints. We first consider the partial semidefinite relaxation of the original problem, and show that there is a bounded approximation solution to it. This will be achieved by determining the diameters of certain convex bodies. We then show that there is also a bounded approximation solution to the original problem via extracting the approximation solution of its semidefinite relaxation. Under some conditions, the approximation bounds obtained in this paper improve those in the literature.  相似文献

In this paper, we reformulate a nonlinear semidefinite programming problem into an optimization problem with a matrix equality constraint. We apply a lower-order penalization approach to the reformulated problem. Necessary and sufficient conditions that guarantee the global (local) exactness of the lower-order penalty functions are derived. Convergence results of the optimal values and optimal solutions of the penalty problems to those of the original semidefinite program are established. Since the penalty functions may not be smooth or even locally Lipschitz, we invoke the Ekeland variational principle to derive necessary optimality conditions for the penalty problems. Under certain conditions, we show that any limit point of a sequence of stationary points of the penalty problems is a KKT stationary point of the original semidefinite program. Communicated by Y. We use techniques from (tracial noncommutative) polynomial optimization to formulate hierarchies of semidefinite programming lower bounds on matrix factorization ranks. In particular, we consider the nonnegative rank, the positive semidefinite rank, and their symmetric analogs: the completely positive rank and the completely positive semidefinite rank. We study convergence properties of our hierarchies, compare them extensively to known lower bounds, and provide some (numerical) examples.

This article presents a family of semidefinite programming bounds, obtained by Lagrangian duality, for 0–1 quadratic optimization problems with linear or quadratic constraints. These bounds have useful computational properties: they have a good ratio of tightness to computing time, they can be optimized by a quasi-Newton method, and their final tightness level is controlled by a real parameter. These properties are illustrated on three standard combinatorial optimization problems: unconstrained 0–1 quadratic optimization, heaviest $k$ -subgraph, and graph bisection.  相似文献

This paper deals with the computation of exact solutions of a classical NP-hard problem in combinatorial optimization, the $k$ -cluster problem. This problem consists in finding a heaviest subgraph with $k$ nodes in an edge weighted graph. We present a branch-and-bound algorithm that applies a novel bounding procedure, based on recent semidefinite programming techniques. We use new semidefinite bounds that are less tight than the standard semidefinite bounds, but cheaper to get. The experiments show that this approach is competitive with the best existing ones.  相似文献

 We discuss convex optimization problems in which some of the variables are constrained to be finite autocorrelation sequences. Problems of this form arise in signal processing and communications, and we describe applications in filter design and system identification. Autocorrelation constraints in optimization problems are often approximated by sampling the corresponding power spectral density, which results in a set of linear inequalities. They can also be cast as linear matrix inequalities via the Kalman-Yakubovich-Popov lemma. The linear matrix inequality formulation is exact, and results in convex optimization problems that can be solved using interior-point methods for semidefinite programming. However, it has an important drawback: to represent an autocorrelation sequence of length $n$, it requires the introduction of a large number ($n(n+1)/2$) of auxiliary variables. This results in a high computational cost when general-purpose semidefinite programming solvers are used. We present a more efficient implementation based on duality and on interior-point methods for convex problems with generalized linear inequalities. We present an algorithm for nonlinear minimax optimization subject to linear equality and inequality constraints which requires first order partial derivatives. The algorithm is based on successive linear approximations to the functions defining the problem. The resulting linear subproblems are solved in the minimax sense subject to the linear constraints. This ensures a feasible-point algorithm. Further, we introduce local bounds on the solutions of the linear subproblems, the bounds being adjusted automatically, depending on the quality of the linear approximations. It is proved that the algorithm will always converge to the set of stationary points of the problem, a stationary point being defined in terms of the generalized gradients of the minimax objective function. It is further proved that, under mild regularity conditions, the algorithm is identical to a quadratically convergent Newton iteration in its final stages. We demonstrate the performance of the algorithm by solving a number of numerical examples with up to 50 variables, 163 functions, and 25 constraints. We present a decomposition-approximation method for generating convex relaxations for nonconvex quadratically constrained quadratic programming (QCQP). We first develop a general conic program relaxation for QCQP based on a matrix decomposition scheme and polyhedral (piecewise linear) underestimation. By employing suitable matrix cones, we then show that the convex conic relaxation can be reduced to a semidefinite programming (SDP) problem. In particular, we investigate polyhedral underestimations for several classes of matrix cones, including the cones of rank-1 and rank-2 matrices, the cone generated by the coefficient matrices, the cone of positive semidefinite matrices and the cones induced by rank-2 semidefinite inequalities. We demonstrate that in general the new SDP relaxations can generate lower bounds at least as tight as the best known SDP relaxations for QCQP. Moreover, we give examples for which tighter lower bounds can be generated by the new SDP relaxations. We also report comparison results of different convex relaxation schemes for nonconvex QCQP with convex quadratic/linear constraints, nonconvex quadratic constraints and 0–1 constraints.  相似文献

In this paper, we discuss complex convex quadratically constrained optimization with uncertain data. Using S-Lemma, we show that the robust counterpart of complex convex quadratically constrained optimization with ellipsoidal or intersection-of-two-ellipsoids uncertainty set leads to a complex semidefinite program. By exploring the approximate S-Lemma, we give a complex semidefinite program which approximates the NP-hard robust counterpart of complex convex quadratic optimization with intersection-of-ellipsoids uncertainty set.  相似文献

Exploiting sparsity is essential to improve the efficiency of solving large optimization problems. We present a method for recognizing the underlying sparsity structure of a nonlinear partially separable problem, and show how the sparsity of the Hessian matrices of the problem’s functions can be improved by performing a nonsingular linear transformation in the space corresponding to the vector of variables. A combinatorial optimization problem is then formulated to increase the number of zeros of the Hessian matrices in the resulting transformed space, and a heuristic greedy algorithm is applied to this formulation. The resulting method can thus be viewed as a preprocessor for converting a problem with hidden sparsity into one in which sparsity is explicit. When it is combined with the sparse semidefinite programming relaxation by Waki et al. for polynomial optimization problems, the proposed method is shown to extend the performance and applicability of this relaxation technique.
