Supersonic molecular beam technique combined with high resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy using synchrotron radiation was applied to the study of the dynamics of dissociative adsorption of oxygen on Ru(0 0 0 1) surface in high coverage region. The Ru(0 0 0 1) surface pre-covered with oxygen atoms of 0.5 monolayer, which corresponds to the p(2 × 1)-O structure, was dosed to oxygen molecules with translational energy of 0.5 eV. Oxygen uptake was compared between the cases with and without the beam source heated in order to verify the effects of internal energy of oxygen. We found drastic enhancement in initial sticking probability of oxygen when the beam source was heated to 1400 K. We concluded that the enhancement of sticking probability is mainly caused by molecular vibrational excitation, indicating that dissociation barrier is located in the exit channel on potential energy surface.  相似文献

First-principles periodic slab density-functional theory (DFT) calculations with a plane-wave basis are used to predict the properties of S, Pt, and Hf adsorption on NiAl(1 1 0). Stable adsorption sites are identified, and adsorbate binding energies and structures are predicted. We find that while S adsorbs in a threefold site, the metals prefer to adsorb in the Ni-Ni twofold bridge site. The latter finding is consistent with scanning tunneling microscopy experiments for adsorption of various transition metals on NiAl(1 1 0) by Ho and coworkers. S is predicted to easily diffuse between threefold sites. We find that Pt and Hf both induce significant changes in the local surface structure, changing twofold bridge sites into fourfold coordination sites by drawing next-nearest-neighbor atoms nearly equidistant with the nearest-neighbor atoms. We find Pt favors interaction with Al slightly more than Ni, while Hf shows a particularly strong affinity for Ni compared to Al. We also predict that Hf may diffuse one-dimensionally along Ni rows with a barrier of ≈0.6 eV.  相似文献

The adsorption of K atoms on Cu(0 0 1) has been studied by low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) at room temperature (RT) and 130 K. At RT, a (3 × 2)-p2mg LEED pattern with single-domain was observed at coverage of 0.33, whereas the orthogonal two-domain was found at 130 K. At 130 K, a c(4 × 2) pattern with orthogonal two-domain was observed at coverage 0.25. Both the (3 × 2)-p2mg and c(4 × 2) structures have been determined by a tensor LEED analysis. It is demonstrated that K atoms are adsorbed on surface fourfold hollow sites in the c(4 × 2), while in the (3 × 2) structure two K atoms in the unit cell are located at an asymmetric site with a glide-reflection-symmetry. The asymmetric site is at near the midpoint between the exact hollow site and bridge-site but slightly close to the hollow site. A rumpling of 0.07 Å in the first Cu layer was confirmed, which might stabilize K atoms at the asymmetric site. Surface structures appearing in a coverage range 0.25-0.33 are discussed in terms of the occupation of the asymmetric site with increase of coverage.  相似文献

The kinetics of N incorporation into Si layers has been studied on the Si(1 0 0) surface probing surface dangling bonds with an optical second-harmonic (SH) generation during surface exposure to N atoms generated by a radio frequency N2 plasma. It is observed that SH intensity decreases with N dose. The rate of decrease in SH intensity apparently decreases with surface temperature, whereas total amount of N atoms taken on the surface remains constant. This fact suggests that N atoms are incorporated at the subsurface layers at higher temperatures. It is shown that the N incorporation at the subsurface layers proceeds by the indiffusion of N atoms either directly or indirectly via intermediate, metastable adsorption at the first surface layer. Applying Kisliuk adsorption model, activation energies of the N indiffusion are evaluated to be 0.30 ± 0.03 and 0.34 ± 0.05 eV for the indirect and direct path, respectively.  相似文献

The surface relaxation mechanisms governing the preferential adsorption of metal atoms onto the faulted half-cells of a 7 × 7 reconstructed Si(1 1 1) surface are studied by rate equations and kinetic Monte Carlo simulations. The versatility of these mechanisms to control the formation of quasi-perfect 2D arrays of metal clusters is revealed via the optimization of the deposition/annealing conditions as a function of operating mechanisms, the Si(1 1 1)7 × 7 energy landscape, and the thermal stability of the created clusters. The influence on the formation process of such nanoarrays of the balance between kinetic limitations, which are especially relevant on Si(1 1 1)7 × 7, and thermodynamic tendencies is discussed.  相似文献

We have performed density-functional theory (DFT) calculations to investigate the adsorption structures of methanol on a Ge(1 0 0) surface. Among many possible adsorption configurations, the most favorable configurations at room temperature were found to be those in which the OH-dissociated methanol molecule forms O-Ge bonds, with the methoxy group either parallel or perpendicular to the Ge surface. The spatial arrangement of methoxy group relative to the Ge(1 0 0) surface is not critical. The dissociated H is bonded to an adjacent up-Ge atom, passivating the dangling bond. The possibility of H diffusion to other Ge atoms is also investigated. The corresponding simulated images explain well the adsorption features observed experimentally. The reaction pathways explain the feasibility of OH-dissociative structures at room temperature. The two OH-dissociative configurations where methoxy groups are either parallel or perpendicular to Ge surfaces are similar in thermodynamic and kinetic aspects.  相似文献

The adsorption properties of CO on experimentally verified stepped Pt3Sn(1 0 2) surface were investigated using quantum mechanical calculations. The two possible terminations of Pt3Sn(1 0 2) were generated and on these terminations all types of possible adsorption sites were determined. The adsorption energies and geometries of the CO molecule for all those sites were calculated. The most favorable sites for adsorption were determined as the short bridge site on the terrace of pure-Pt row of the mixed-atom-ending termination, atop site at the step-edge of the pure row of pure-Pt-ending termination and atop site at the step-edge of the pure-Pt row of the mixed-atom-ending termination. The results were compared with those for similar sites on the flat Pt3Sn(1 1 0) surface considering the fact that Pt3Sn(1 0 2) has terraces with (1 1 0) orientation. The LDOS analysis of bare sites clearly shows that there are significant differences between the electronic properties of Pt atoms at stepped Pt3Sn(1 0 2) surface and the electronic properties of Pt atoms at flat (1 1 0) surface, which leads to changes in the CO bonding energies of these Pt atoms. Adsorption on Pt3Sn(1 0 2) surface is in general stronger compared to that on Pt3Sn(1 1 0) surface. The difference in adsorption strength of similar sites on these two surface terminations is a result of stepped structure of Pt3Sn(1 0 2). The local density of states (LDOS) of the adsorbent Pt and C of adsorbed CO was utilized. The LDOS of the surface metal atoms with CO-adsorbed atop and of their bare state were compared to see the effect of CO chemisorption on the electron density distribution of the corresponding Pt atom. The downward shift in energy peak in the LDOS curves as well as changes in the electron densities of the corresponding energy levels indicate the orbital mixing between CO molecular orbitals and metal d-states. The present study showed that the adsorption strength of the sites has a direct relation with their LDOS profiles.  相似文献

A theoretical epitaxial growth model with realistic barriers for surface diffusion is investigated by means of kinetic Monte Carlo simulations to study the growth modes of metastable (3 3 1) nanofacets on Au and Pt(1 1 0) surfaces. The results show that under experimental atomic fluxes, the (3 3 1) nanofacets grow by 2D nucleation at low temperature in the submonolayer regime. A metastable growth phase diagram that can be useful to experimentalists is presented and looks similar to the one found for the stationary growth of the bcc(0 0 1) surface in the kinetic 6-vertex model.  相似文献

By setting up two low temperature regions on a terrace of a vicinal Si(1 0 0)-2 × 1 surface, we have studied growth of nano-islands in the two regions using a kinetic Monte Carlo simulation. At first two islands are formed and grow independently without any supply of atoms from the outside. As the growth proceeds further, two islands are connected with each other by forming a bridge region. After the connection, the growth changes dramatically showing a competitive mode in one stage and a cooperative mode in the other. Two islands grow cooperatively in a sense that a larger island ceases to grow and waits until the size of the other smaller island becomes similar to that of the larger one. When two islands become similar in size, one of the islands grows faster than the other competitively, by accumulating atoms from then smaller one. The origin of the growth mode is analyzed.  相似文献

The deposition and ripening of Pd atoms on the MgO(1 0 0) surface are modeled using kinetic Monte Carlo simulations. The density of Pd islands is obtained by simulating the deposition of 0.1 ML in 3 min. Two sets of kinetic parameters are tested and compared with experiment over a 200-800 K temperature range. One model is based upon parameters obtained by fitting rate equations to experimental data and assuming the Pd monomer is the only diffusing species. The other is based upon transition rates obtained from density functional theory calculations which show that small Pd clusters are also mobile. In both models, oxygen vacancy defects on the MgO surface provide strong traps for Pd monomers and serve as nucleation sites for islands. Kinetic Monte Carlo simulations show that both models reproduce the experimentally observed island density versus temperature, despite large differences in the energetics and different diffusion mechanisms. The low temperature Pd island formation at defects is attributed to fast monomer diffusion to defects in the rate-equation-based model, whereas in the DFT-based model, small clusters form already on terraces and diffuse to defects. In the DFT-based model, the strong dimer and trimer binding energies at charged oxygen vacancy defects prevent island ripening below the experimentally observed onset temperature of 600 K.  相似文献

The surface structure of Si(1 1 1)-6 × 1-Ag was investigated using surface X-ray diffraction techniques. By analyzing the CTR scattering intensities along 00 rod, the positions of the Ag and reconstructed Si atoms perpendicular to the surface were determined. The results agreed well with the HCC model proposed for a 3 × 1 structure induced by alkali-metals on a Si(1 1 1) substrate. The heights of the surface Ag and Si atoms did not move when the surface structure changed from Si(1 1 1)-√3 × √3-Ag to Si(1 1 1)-6 × 1-Ag by the desorption of the Ag atoms. From the GIXD measurement, the in-plane arrangement of the surface Ag atoms was determined. The results indicate that the Ag atoms move large distances at the phase transition between the 6 × 1 and 3 × 1 structures.  相似文献

With density-functional-theory calculations, we have studied coverage-dependent absorption of H atoms into the sub-surface below a face-centered-cubic (fcc) hollow site of Cu(1 1 1). Both frozen and relaxed surface lattices were considered when the atomic H migrated from the surface to the sub-surface. The potential energy curve for the absorbing H shows that the surface site is in general favored over the sub-surface site, and this trend varies little with the H coverage (0.11-0.67 ML). If the hexagonal-close-packed (hcp) hollow sites immediately vicinal to the absorbing H are pre-adsorbed with other H atoms, the surface adsorption potential is greatly increased, because of the repulsive H-H interaction, to a value near, or even greater than, the sub-surface absorption potential; when two or three H atoms (on the hcp sites) are beside the absorbing H, the energy barrier for the sub-surface absorption is decreased, whereas that for diffusion from the sub-surface to the surface is enhanced. These results indicate that, on an H-saturated Cu(1 1 1) surface (0.67 ML), the sub-surface sites below the fcc sites with two or three neighboring H atoms can trap the sub-surface H.  相似文献

The WC(1 0 0) surface has been studied by using ab initio methods of the density functional theory and pseudopotentials. Calculations have shown that surface and undersurface atoms move from their bulk positions. Namely, carbon atoms moved outward, while tungsten atoms moved inward. Five geometric cases for Co/WC(1 0 0) system were compared: (A) Co atoms are above C atoms; (B) Co atoms are above W atoms; (C) Co atoms are in the four-fold sites above WC pairs; (D and E) Co atoms are above the W-W-C and C-C-W three-fold sites, respectively - and the (A) case has been found to be energetically preferable. In all cases, Co layers have been found to be ferromagnetic. The densities of states for the bulk fcc-WC, the WC(1 0 0) surface, and the WC/Co system were compared.  相似文献

Structure and energy related properties of neutral and charged vacancies on relaxed diamond (1 0 0) (2 × 1) surface were investigated by means of density functional theory. Calculations indicate that the diffusion of a single vacancy from the top surface layer to the second layer is not energetically favored. Analysis of energies in charged system shows that neutral state is most stable on diamond (1 0 0) (2 × 1) surface. The multiplicity of possible states can exist on diamond (1 0 0) surface in dependence on the surface Fermi level, which supports that surface diffusion of a vacancy is mediated by the change of vacancy charge states. Analysis of density of states shows surface vacancy can be effectively measured by photoelectricity technology.  相似文献

The impingement and interdiffusion of adsorbed Pb and Bi layers spreading from separated 3D pure bulk sources on Cu(1 0 0) has been studied, at T = 513 K, by in situ scanning Auger microscopy. When the leading edges of the pure Pb and Bi diffusion profiles impinge, they both consist of low-coverage lattice gas surface alloyed phases. In these low-coverage phases, Pb displaces surface alloyed Bi and the point of intersection of the profiles drifts towards the Bi source. These features lead to the conclusion that Pb atoms are more strongly bound at surface alloyed sites in Cu(1 0 0) than Bi atoms. Once the total coverage (Pb + Bi) on the substrate reaches about one monolayer, Pb and Bi are dealloyed from the substrate, and the interdiffusion profiles become essentially symmetric. Pb and Bi mix in all proportions, with an interdiffusion coefficient of ∼10−13 m2/s. This is considerably smaller than the self-diffusion coefficients previously observed for pure Pb and Bi in their respective high-coverage phases, indicating that the mechanism of interdiffusion is different from that of self-diffusion. As interdiffusion proceeds, the point of intersection of the Pb and Bi profiles reverses its drift direction, leading to the conclusion that binding of Bi atoms to the Cu(1 0 0) substrate is stronger than that of Pb atoms in the highest-coverage surface dealloyed layers.  相似文献

The characteristic energy band values such as the Fermi-level position with respect to valence band top for a boron-doped p-type hydrogen-terminated chemical-vapor-deposition (CVD) diamond (0 0 1)2 × 1 surface and for a clean CVD diamond (0 0 1)2 × 1 surface have been determined by a new method with an accuracy of ±0.02 eV. The electron attenuation length for the clean diamond (0 0 1)2 × 1 surface for the electron kinetic energy of C 1s X-ray photoemission peak by Mg Kα excitation is experimentally determined to be 2.1-2.2 nm. These values are compared and discussed with the previously reported experimental and simulation values.  相似文献

In this work we have performed total-energy calculations on the geometric structure and adsorption properties of Cu(1 0 0) c(2 × 2)/N surface by using the density-functional theory and the projector-augmented wave method. It is concluded that nitrogen atom was adsorbed on a FFH site with a vertical distance of 0.2 Å towards from surface Cu layer. The bond length of the shortest Cu-N bonding is calculated to be 1.83 Å. Geometry optimization calculations exclude out the possibilities of adsorbate induced reconstruction mode suggested by Driver and Woodruff and the atop structural model. The calculated workfunction for this absorbate-adsorbent system is 4.63 eV which is quite close to that of a clean Cu(1 0 0) surface. The total-energy calculations showed that the average adsorption energy per nitrogen in the case of Cu(1 0 0) c(2 × 2)-N is about 4.88 eV with respect to an isolated N atom. The absorption of nitrogen on Cu(1 0 0) surface yields the hybridization between surface Cu atoms and N, and generates the localized surface states at −1.0 eV relative to Fermi energy EF. The stretch mode of the adsorbed nitrogen at FFH site is about 30.8 meV. The present study provides a strong criterion to account for the local surface geometry in Cu(1 0 0) c(2 × 2)/N surface.  相似文献

An initial oxidation dynamics of 4H-SiC(0 0 0 1)-(√3 × √3)R30° surface has been studied using high resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and supersonic molecular beams. Clean 4H-SiC(0 0 0 1)-(√3 × √3)R30° surface was exposed to oxygen molecules with translational energy of 0.5 eV at 300 K. In the first step of initial oxidation, oxygen molecules are immediately dissociated and atomic oxygens are inserted into Si-Si back bonds to form stable oxide species. At this stage, drastic increase in growth rate of stable oxide species by heating molecular beam source to 1400 K was found. We concluded that this increase in growth rate of stable oxide is mainly caused by molecular vibrational excitation. It suggests that the dissociation barrier is located in the exit channel on potential energy hypersurface. A metastable molecular oxygen species was found to be adsorbed on a Si-adatom that has two oxygen atoms inserted into the back bonds. The adsorption of the metastable species is neither enhanced nor suppressed by molecular vibrational excitation.  相似文献

Adsorption of carbon monoxide on Pd(3 1 1) and (2 1 1) stepped surfaces has been investigated by the extended London-Eyring-Polyani-Sato (LEPS) method constructed using a 5-parameter Morse potential. The calculated results show that there exist common characteristics of CO adsorption on the two surfaces. At low coverage, CO occupies threefold hollow site of the (1 1 1) terrace and is tilted with respect to the surface normal. Among the threefold hollow sites on the (1 1 1) terrace, the nearer the site is to the step, the greater is the influence of the step. The twofold bridge site on the (1 0 0) step is also a stable adsorption site at high coverage. Because of the different lengths of the (1 1 1) terraces, the (3 1 1) and (2 1 1) stepped surfaces have different characteristics. A number of new sites are exposed on the boundary regions, including the fourfold hollow site (H4) of the (3 1 1) surface and the fivefold hollow site (H5) of the (2 1 1) surface. At high coverage, CO resides in the H5 site of the (2 1 1) surface, but the H4 site of the (3 1 1) surface is not a stable adsorption site. This study further shows that the on-top site on the (1 0 0) step of Pd(3 1 1) is a stable adsorption site, but the same type of site on Pd(2 1 1) is not.  相似文献

The adsorption of atomic Se on a Fe(1 1 0) surface is examined using the density functional theory (DFT). Selenium is adsorbed in high-symmetry adsorption sites: the -short and long-bridge, and atop sites at 1/2, 1/4, and 1 monolayer (ML) coverages. The long bridge (LB) site is found to be the most stable, followed by the short bridge (SB) and top sites (T). The following overlayer structures were examined, p(2 × 2), c(2 × 2), and p(1 × 1), which correspond to 1/4 ML, 1/2 ML, and 1 ML respectively. Adsorption energy is −5.23 eV at 1/4 ML. Se adsorption results in surface reconstruction, being more extensive for adsorption in the long bridge site at 1/2 ML, with vertical displacements between +8.63 and −6.69% -with regard to the original Fe position-, affecting the 1st and 2nd neighbours. The largest displacement in x or y-directions was determined to be 0.011, 0.030, and 0.021 Å for atop and bridge sites. Comparisons between Se-adsorbed and pure Fe surfaces revealed reductions in the magnetic moments of surface-layer Fe atoms in the vicinity of the Se. At the long bridge site, the presence of Se causes a decrease in the surface Fe d-orbital density of states between 4 and 5 eV below Fermi level. The density of states present a contribution of Se states at −3.1 eV and −12.9 eV. stabilized after adsorption. The Fe-Fe overlap population decrease and a Fe-Se bond are formed at the expense of the metallic bond.  相似文献
