Recently, tetramantane, a member of diamondoid series (C4n+6H4n+12), has shown to exhibit negative-electron-affinity effect which has a potential use for efficient electron emitting devices. Here, we explore the electronic property of adamantane (C10H16), the smallest member of the series. We prepare adamantane films on Si(1 1 1) substrates and then study their electronic structure with photoemission spectroscopy. Photoelectron spectra of adamantane on Si(1 1 1) have shown a peak at low-kinetic energy which could be a generic property of diamondoids. The possibility of the negative-electron-affinity effect in adamantane is further discussed.  相似文献

The electronic structure of α-Mo2C(0 0 0 1) has been investigated by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy utilizing synchrotron radiation. A sharp peak is observed at 3.3 eV in normal-emission spectra. Since the peak shows no dispersion as a function of photon energy and is sensitively attenuated by oxygen adsorption, the initial state of the peak is attributed to a surface state. Resonant photoemission study shows that the state includes substantial contribution of 4d orbitals of the Mo atoms in the second layer. The emissions with constant kinetic energies of 22 and 31 eV above the Fermi level (EF) are found in normal-emission spectra, and these emissions are interpreted as originating from the Mo N1N23V and N23VV Auger transitions, respectively.  相似文献

A soft X-ray appearance potential spectroscopy (SXAPS) apparatus with high sensitivity was built to measure non-derivative spectra. SXAPS spectra (non-derivative) of Ti 2p and O 1s for TiO2(1 1 0)-1 × 2 and (0 0 1)-1 × 1 surfaces have been measured using low incident currents (about 10 μA/cm2) and a photon counting mode. Density of empty states on Ti and O sites are deduced by self-deconvoluting the spectra. The self-deconvoluted SXAPS spectra are qualitatively similar to those measured by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The Ti 2p3/2 spectrum shows two strong peaks which correspond to t2g and eg states. For the O 1s spectrum two strong peaks near the threshold are also found which can be ascribed to O 2pπ and O 2pσ states. These results suggest that the spectra almost obey the dipole selection rule, so-called the “approximate dipole selection rule”. The SXAPS spectra of Ti 2p and O 1s for the (1 1 0) and (0 0 1) surfaces resemble qualitatively, which is consistent with the XAS results. The spectra measured on the (1 1 0)-1 × 2 surface at an incident angle of 45° off normal to the surface and on the (1 1 0) surface sputtered by Ar ions indicate that SXAPS is very sensitive to the surface electronic states.  相似文献

In this work we present results from density functional theory (DFT) cluster studies to determine polarization-dependent near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectra of the vanadyl termination of the V2O3(0 0 0 1) surface. The oxygen K edge spectra are calculated for the relaxed surface geometry where geometric parameters are taken from recent periodic DFT work. A detailed analysis of energetic peak positions, relative intensities, and final state orbitals allows a deep understanding of the complex angular dependence of the calculated spectra on the basis of the local binding environment of differently coordinated oxygen species. Further, our theoretical analysis can assign and explain various spectral details in the experimental NEXAFS data, in particular, those related to vanadyl oxygen. This allows us to support the experimentally suggested vanadyl surface termination.  相似文献

Starting from the silicon rich (3 × 3) reconstruction of SiC(0 0 0 1) we prepared oxidized surfaces by hydrogen etching as well as by exposure to molecular oxygen. LEED pictures show a (1 × 1)-reconstructed surface with a faint structure being more pronounced for the hydrogen-etched surfaces. Auger spectra reveal a distinct change in the shape of the SiLVV peak indicating the existence of Si-O bonds on the surface. Inverse photoemission (IPE) is employed to study the electronic structure above the Fermi level of the oxidized samples. On the hydrogen-etched surface difference spectra reveal a surface feature at 1 eV above the Fermi level that presumably originates from an isolated dangling bond on ordered patches of the oxidized surface.  相似文献

The structure of the Co thin films on Pd(1 1 1) and the effect of the CO adsorption on Co thin films were studied by Co K-edge surface X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS). The polarization dependences of the X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra indicate that Co thin films grow in the fcc stacking mode on Pd(1 1 1) up to 12 ML. The analysis of the nearest neighbor shell shows little mechanical strain at the interface, indicating that Co atom does not grow pseudomorphically on Pd(1 1 1). There is no alloy-like structure at the interface. CO adsorption causes no structural change of the Co thin films but modifies the Co surface electronic state. These structural studies provide deep insight in the magnetic property of the Co thin films on Pd(1 1 1).  相似文献

The effect of surface reconstruction on contrast in scanning electron microscopy of the Si(1 0 0)-2 × 1 surface is investigated. A theory of the initial secondary production rate is developed and an upper bound on the rate is shown to depend on the product of the integrated intensities of the initial and final RHEED states. These states are calculated with a reflection matrix method and their depth dependence is investigated. The results are used to analyse scanning electron microscopy contrast in images of 1 × 2- and 2 × 1-regions of the Si(1 0 0)-2 × 1 surface reported by Watanabe et al. The calculated integrated intensities are consistent with the experimental images and with the experimentally observed dependence of the contrast on the azimuth of the incident electron beam. This supports the idea that the observed contrast is caused by the effect of surface reconstruction on the RHEED states.  相似文献

Photoelectron spectroscopy, low-energy electron diffraction, and scanning probe microscopy were used to investigate the electronic and structural properties of graphite layers grown by solid state graphitization of SiC(0 0 0 1) surfaces. The process leads to well-ordered graphite layers which are rotated against the substrate lattice by 30°. On on-axis 6H-SiC(0 0 0 1) substrates we observe graphitic layers with up to several 100 nm wide terraces. ARUPS spectra of the graphite layers grown on on-axis 6H-SiC(0 0 0 1) surfaces are indicative of a well-developed band structure. For the graphite/n-type 6H-SiC(0 0 0 1) layer system we observe a Schottky barrier height of ?B,n = 0.3 ± 0.1 eV. ARUPS spectra of graphite layers grown on 8° off-axis oriented 4H-SiC(0 0 0 1) show unique replicas which are explained by a carpet-like growth mode combined with a step bunching of the substrate.  相似文献

Diffraction in electron stimulated desorption has revealed a propensity for Cl+ desorption from rest atom vs. adatom areas and unfaulted vs. faulted zones of Cl-terminated Si(1 1 1)-(7 × 7) surfaces. We associate the 15 eV ± 1 eV threshold with ionization of Si-Cl σ-bonding surface states and formation of screened two-hole states with Si 3s character. Similar specificity is observed from A and B reconstructions. This can be due to reduced screening in unfaulted regions and increased hole localization in Si back-bonds within faulted regions.  相似文献

The growth of ultrathin films of Si3N4 directly on Si surfaces is studied with valence band photoemission. The information from these studies about the growth mechanism and the changes of the electronic structure is enhanced by the use of various photon energies with synchrotron radiation. The silicon nitride films are grown isothermally on the Si(1 0 0) and Si(1 1 1) surfaces by reactions with atomic N. The atomic nitrogen is produced by using a remote, microwave excited nitrogen plasma. The growth under these conditions was earlier shown to be self limiting. The details in the valence band spectra are identified and resolved with numerical methods, and followed systematically during the growth. Thus the identification of Si surface states, Si-nitride interface states and bulk nitride states becomes possible. The previously obtained separation between amorphous and crystalline growth occurring around 500 °C is further supported in the present studies.  相似文献

The far-infrared and middle-infrared emission spectra of deuterated water vapour were measured at temperatures 1370, 1520, and 1940 K in the ranges 320-860 and 1750-3400 cm−1. The measurements were performed in an alumina cell with an effective length of hot gas of about 50 cm. More than 3550 new measured lines for the D216O molecule corresponding to transitions from highly excited rotational levels of the (0 2 0), (1 0 0), and (0 0 1) vibrational states are reported. These new lines correspond to rotational states with higher values of the rotational quantum numbers compared to previously published determinations: Jmax = 29 and Ka(max) = 22 for the (0 2 0) state, Jmax = 29 and Ka(max) = 25 for the (1 0 0) state, and Jmax = 30 and Ka(max) = 23 for the (0 0 1) state. The extended set of 1987 experimental rotational energy levels for the (0 2 0), (1 0 0), and (0 0 1) vibration states including all previously available data has been determined. For the data reduction we used the generating function model. The root mean square (RMS) deviation between observed and calculated values is 0.004 cm−1 for 1952 rovibrational levels of all three vibration states. A comparison of the observed energy levels with the best available values from the literature and with the global predictions from molecular electronic potential energy surfaces of water isotopic species [H. Partridge, D.W. Schwenke, J. Chem. Phys. 106 (1997) 4618] is discussed. The latter confirms a good consistency of mass-dependent DBOC corrections in the PS potential function with new experimental rovibrational data.  相似文献

The electronic structure of Si(1 1 1)-(6 × 6)Au surface covered with submonolayer amount of Pb is investigated using scanning tunneling spectroscopy. Already in small islands of Pb with thickness of 1 ML Pb(1 1 1) and with the diameter of only about 2 nm we detected the quantized electronic state with energy 0.55 eV below the Fermi level. Similarly, the I(V) characteristics made for the Si(1 1 1)-(6 × 6)Au surface reveal a localized energy state 0.3 eV below the Fermi level. These energies result from fitting of the theoretical curves to the experimental data. The calculations are based on tight binding Hubbard model. The theoretical calculations clearly show prominent modification of the I(V) curve due to variation of electronic and topographic properties of the STM tip apex.  相似文献

In this paper, we present experimental results of target current (TCS) and LEED investigation of well-oriented InSb(1 1 0) and InSb(1 1 1)-A and InSb(1 1 1)-B crystals. TCS results are interpreted in terms of very low electron diffraction (VLEED) and empty band signatures. To examine to which extent the TCS spectra reflect the bulk or surface electronic properties of InSb(1 1 0), thin layers of indium have been evaporated and the corresponding spectrum changes have been investigated.  相似文献

The carbon 1s near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectra of the acetylene (C2H2) at 1 ML coverage adsorbed on the Si(0 0 1)-(2 × 1) surface at room temperature have been investigated by multiple-scattering cluster (MSC). The MSC result shows that the correct adsorption model of C2H2/Si(0 0 1)-(2 × 1) is unique, i.e. the dimerized structure with two domains, (2 × 1) and (1 × 2).  相似文献

A new structural model with fluctuant Si-trimers and missing Si-adatom is proposed for Si-terminated 6H-SiC(0 0 0 1)(3 × 3) reconstruction. The atomic and electronic structures of the model are studied using first principles pseudopotential density-functional approach. The calculated surface electronic density of states coincides quantitatively with the experimental results of photoemission and electron energy loss spectroscopy. Based on the calculations, the Patterson map and scanning tunneling microscopic (STM) images simulated for the new model agree more satisfactorily with the experimental X-ray diffraction and STM observations than that for previously proposed models. The calculations of formation energies suggest that the new structure would be formed under the environment of dilute Si vapor around the surface in the preparation process.  相似文献

We have studied the correlation between the valence electron configuration and the electronic structure of M2AC(0 0 0 1) surfaces (M = Ti, V, Cr; A = Al, Ga, Ge) by density functional theory. The A surface termination is the most stable configuration for all systems studied according to our surface energy data. As the M valence electron population is increased, the surface energy increases by 22% and 12% for A = Al and Ga, respectively, while it decreases by 29% for A = Ge. This can be understood by evaluating the valence electron concentration induced changes in the surface density of states. Antibonding surface Md-Ap states are present as Ti is substituted by Cr in M2AC(0 0 0 1) for A = Al and Ga, while antibonding surface Md-Ap states are not present as Ti is substituted by Cr in M2GeC(0 0 0 1).  相似文献

First-principles pseudo-potential calculations within density-functional theory framework are performed in order to study the structural and electronic properties of nickel adsorption and diffusion on a GaN(0 0 0 1)-2×2 surface. The adsorption energies and potential energy surfaces are investigated for a Ni adatom on the Ga-terminated (0 0 0 1) surface of GaN. This surface is also used to study the effect of the nickel surface coverage. The results show that the most stable positions of a Ni adatom on GaN(0 0 0 1) are at the H3 sites and T4 sites, for low and high Ni coverage respectively. In addition, confirming previous experimental results, we have found that the growth of Ni monolayers on the GaN(0 0 0 1) surface is possible.  相似文献

Spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (SP-STM/STS) has been performed on clean and sulfur-covered three-dimensional Fe islands on W(1 1 0). Upon dosing with H2S the island surface is covered with 1/3 ML S leading to a c(3 × 1) reconstruction. The characteristic magnetic vortex structure is observable before and after dosing, even though the electronic structure of the surface is modified as is shown by SP-STS.  相似文献

The effect of ferroelectric poling direction on the structure and electronic properties of the LiNbO3 (0 0 0 1) surface was characterized. Low energy and reflection high energy electron diffraction indicated that both the positively and negatively poled surfaces were (1 × 1) with no evidence of longer range periodic reconstructions. Low energy ion scattering spectra from both surfaces were dominated by scattering from oxygen atoms. X-ray and ultraviolet photoelectron spectra also showed little difference between the positively and negatively poled surfaces, with the exception of a high binding energy shoulder on the O 1s core level of the negative surface. Exposure of the surfaces to atomic hydrogen caused reduction of the surface Nb rather than an increase in intensity on the high binding energy side of the O 1s peak, indicating that the shoulder on the O 1s peak on the negative surface was not due to surface hydroxyl groups. Temperature programmed desorption measurements indicated that the nearly stoichiometric LiNbO3 samples were susceptible to loss of Li2O starting at temperatures as low as 500 K, independent of the poling direction. An adatom/vacancy model is proposed in which oxygen ad-anions accumulate on one side of the crystal while oxygen anion vacancies are created on the opposite surface. This model can explain the apparent oxygen termination of both surfaces and the observed (1 × 1) periodicity of the surfaces, and also effectively screens the thickness dependent electric field associated with the polar orientation of the crystal.  相似文献

The growth mode and electronic structure of Au nano-clusters grown on NiO and TiO2 were analyzed by reflection high-energy electron diffraction, a field-emission type scanning electron microscope, medium energy ion scattering and photoelectron spectroscopy. Au was deposited on clean NiO(0 0 1)-1 × 1 and TiO2(1 1 0)-1 × 1 surfaces at room temperature with a Knudsen cell at a rate of 0.25-0.35 ML/min (1 ML = 1.39 × 1015 atoms/cm2:Au(1 1 1)). Initially two-dimensional (2D) islands with thickness of one Au-atom layer grow epitaxially on NiO(0 0 1) and then neighboring 2D-islands link each other to form three-dimensional (3D)-islands with the c-axis oriented to the [1 1 1] direction. The critical size to form 3D-islands is estimated to be about 5 nm2. The shape of the 3D-islands is well approximated by a partial sphere with a diameter d and height h ranging from 2.0 to 11.8 nm and from 0.95 to 4.2 nm, respectively for Au coverage from 0.13 to 4.6 ML. The valence band spectra show that the Au/NiO and Au/TiO2 surfaces have metallic characters for Au coverage above 0.9 ML. We observed Au 4f spectra and found no binding energy shift for Au/NiO but significant higher binding energy shifts for Au/TiO2 due to an electron charge transfer from Au to TiO2. The work function of Au/NiO(0 0 1) gradually increases with increase in Au coverage from 4.4 eV (NiO(0 0 1)) to 5.36 eV (Au(1 1 1)). In contrast, a small Au deposition(0.15 to 1.5 ML) on TiO2(1 1 0) leads to reduction of the work function, which is correlated with an electron charge transfer from Au to TiO2 substrate.  相似文献
