We have studied adsorption of CO on Fe3O4(1 1 1) films grown on a Pt(1 1 1) substrate by temperature programmed desorption (TPD), infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRAS) and high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS). Three adsorption states are observed, from which CO desorbs at ∼110, 180, and 230 K. CO adsorbed in these states exhibits stretching frequencies at ∼2115-2140, 2080 and 2207 cm−1, respectively. The adsorption results are discussed in terms of different structural models previously reported. We suggest that the Fe3O4(1 1 1) surface is terminated by 1/2 ML of iron, with an outermost 1/4 ML consisting of octahedral Fe2+ cations situated above an 1/4 ML of tetrahedral Fe3+ ions, in agreement with previous theoretical calculations. The most strongly bound CO is assigned to adsorption to Fe3+ cations present on the step edges.  相似文献

The structures of the lowest total energy for small AgN clusters with N = 2-20, which are grown on Ag(1 1 1) and Ni(1 1 1) surfaces, have been determined using a combination of the embedded-atom method and the basin-hopping algorithm. It is found that the particularly stable Ag clusters with N<18 have similar geometries on both surfaces when comparing clusters of the same size. On the other hand, the geometries of the less stable Ag clusters in the same size range differ for the two surfaces. From N?18, the sizes of the particularly stable structures are different for the two different substrates. Due to the large size mismatch of the two types of atoms it is energetically unfavorable for Ag to form a pseudomorphic monolayer structures on Ni(1 1 1) and there is considerable strain produced at the interface. The effect of this strain and the increased adatom-substrate interactions lead to irregular and elongated structures of the adsorbed Ag clusters.  相似文献

The structure of the hydroxylated hematite (0 0 0 1) surface was investigated using crystal truncation rod diffraction and density functional theory. The combined experimental and theoretical results suggest that the surface is dominated by two hydroxyl moieties—hydroxyls that are singly coordinated and doubly coordinated with Fe. The results are consistent with the formation of distinct domains of these surface species; one corresponding to the hydroxylation of the surface Fe-cation predicted to be most stable under UHV conditions, and the second a complete removal of this surface Fe species leaving the hydroxylated oxygen layer. Furthermore, our results indicate that the hydroxylated hematite surface structures are significantly more stable than their dehydroxylated counterparts at high water partial pressures, and this transition in stability occurs at water pressures orders of magnitude below the same transition for α-alumina. These results explain the observed differences in reactivity of hematite and alumina (0 0 0 1) surfaces with respect to water and binding of aqueous metal cations.  相似文献

The adsorption, diffusion and ordering of hydrogen on Pd(1 1 1) was studied by scanning tunneling microscopy in the temperature range of 37-90 K. At low coverage isolated hydrogen atoms were observed. They formed √3×√3-1H islands as the coverage increased. Above 1/3 monolayer (ML) coverage areas of a new phase with √3×√3-2H structure were formed, with both structures coexisting between 1/3 and 2/3 ML. Finally a 1 × 1 structure was formed after high exposures of hydrogen above 50 K, with a coverage close to 1 ML. Atomically resolved images reveal that H binds to fcc hollow sites.  相似文献

The adsorption of Pb onto a NiAl(1 1 0) single crystal surface at 300 K has been studied by Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), Low energy electron diffraction (LEED), molecular beam/surface scattering and single crystal adsorption calorimetry (SCAC). AES indicates a Stranski-Krastanov growth mode, i.e., Pb initially grows on NiAl(1 1 0) two-dimensionally until the first layer completes at 0.89 ML, where a superstructure is observed by LEED, followed by 3D islanding. Measurements of the Pb gas that does not stick indicate that Pb sticks on NiAl(1 1 0) with an initial probability of 0.99. The initial heat of adsorption of Pb on NiAl(1 1 0) is 249 ± 10 kJ/mol. Due to the repulsive interactions between Pb adatoms, the heat of adsorption decreases within the first layer to a value identical to the heat of sublimation of bulk Pb (195 kJ/mol), where it remains at higher coverages. This first application of adsorption calorimetry on such a thick sample (75 μm versus 0.2-8 μm previously) demonstrates that adsorption calorimetry can be extended to a wider range of surfaces, since this thickness can be achieved with nearly any single crystal material by simple mechanical thinning.  相似文献

The formic acid and methanol oxidation reaction are studied on Pt(1 1 1) modified by a pseudomorphic Pd monolayer (denoted hereafter as the Pt(1 1 1)-Pd1 ML system) in 0.1 M HClO4 solution. The results are compared to the bare Pt(1 1 1) surface. The nature of adsorbed intermediates (COad) and the electrocatalytic properties (the onset of CO2 formation) were studied by FTIR spectroscopy. The results show that Pd has a unique catalytic activity for HCOOH oxidation, with Pd surface atoms being about four times more active than Pt surface atoms at 0.4 V. FTIR spectra reveal that on Pt atoms adsorbed CO is produced from dehydration of HCOOH, whereas no CO adsorbed on Pd can be detected although a high production rate of CO2 is observed at low potentials. This indicates that the reaction can proceed on Pd at low potentials without the typical “poison” formation. In contrast to its high activity for formic acid oxidation, the Pd film is completely inactive for methanol oxidation. The FTIR spectra show that neither adsorbed CO is formed on the Pd sites nor significant amounts of CO2 are produced during the electrooxidation of methanol.  相似文献

The very first stages of the growth of NiO on Cu(1 1 1) is examined on a microscopic scale. The paper focuses on the morphological and structural characterization of nanostructures formed in the 0-1 Å thickness range. Ultra-thin NiO films, obtained through evaporation of a Ni rod under an oxygen atmosphere were grown at 550 K. In the early stages of the growth the oxide film morphology shows 10-30 nm large, monolayer high, islands with a partial incorporation of metallic Ni in the first Cu(1 1 1) surface plane. The first layer is formed by an epitaxial atomic layer exhibiting a STM contrast similar to the one observed on adsorbed oxygen on Cu(1 1 0). A NiO cluster nucleation and coalescence mechanism is proposed in order to explain the formation of the second NiO layer. A α-Ni2O3 hexagonal phase, or a structural distortion of the NiO(1 1 1)()R30° structure could both explain the complex LEED patterns.  相似文献

Adsorption of NO on a Pt(1 1 1) surface pre-covered with a p(2 × 2) atomic oxygen layer has been studied in situ by high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and temperature-programmed XPS using third-generation synchrotron radiation at BESSY II, Berlin, combined with molecular beam techniques and ex situ by low energy electron diffraction and temperature-programmed desorption. O 1s XP spectra reveal that an ordered p(2 × 2)-O layer dramatically changes the adsorption behavior of NO as compared to the clean surface. The atomic oxygen occupies fcc hollow sites, and therefore blocks NO adsorption on these sites, which are energetically preferred on clean Pt(1 1 1). As a consequence, NO populates on-top sites at low coverage. At 110 K for higher coverages, NO can additionally adsorb on hcp hollow sites, thereby inducing a shift of the O 1s binding energy of atomic oxygen towards lower energies by about 0.25 eV. The bond strength of the hcp hollow NO species to the substrate is weakened by the presence of atomic oxygen. A sharp p(2 × 2) LEED pattern is observed for NO adsorption on the oxygen pre-covered surface, up to saturation coverage. The total saturation coverage of NO on Pt(1 1 1) pre-covered with varying amounts of oxygen (below 0.25 ML) decreases linearly with the coverage of oxygen. The initial sticking coefficient of NO is reduced from 0.96 on clean Pt(1 1 1) to 0.88 on a p(2 × 2) oxygen pre-covered surface.  相似文献

The structure of a nickel oxide film 2 ML thick has been investigated by LEED intensity analysis. The NiO film was prepared by evaporating Ni in presence of O2 at a pressure in the 10−6 mbar range. The growth of the oxide film was followed by XPS, LEIS and LEED. In the early stages of deposition, the film shows a (2 × 1) superstructure in LEED. After deposition of 2 ML of NiO, a sharp (1 × 1) LEED pattern is observed. The intensity versus electron energy curves of the LEED spots were measured for this NiO(1 × 1) film and analysed by means of the tensor LEED method. A good level of agreement of the experimental LEED intensities with those calculated for a pseudomorphic NiO(0 0 1) film was obtained. We found that oxygen atoms at the oxide-substrate interface are on-top silver atoms. The interlayer distance in the oxide does not differ significantly from that in bulk NiO(0 0 1), within the accuracy of the analysis. An outward displacement (0.05 ± 0.05 Å) of oxygen atoms with respect to nickel atoms was found at the oxide film surface. The interlayer distance at the silver-nickel oxide interface is 2.43 ± 0.05 Å.  相似文献

We report on the in situ observation of temperature-driven drastic morphology evolution and surface pre-melting of the Bi(0 0 1) nanofilm deposited on the Si(1 1 1)-7 × 7 surface by use of spot-profile-analyzing low-energy electron diffraction (SPA-LEED). Surface step density of the single-crystalline, epitaxial Bi(0 0 1) film decreases above 350 K in a critical manner. On annealed Bi(0 0 1) films, we have detected surface pre-melting with a transition temperature of 350 K, which yields reversible diffraction intensity drop in addition to the harmonic Debye-Waller behavior. The observed surface flattening of the as-deposited film is driven by the increased amount of mobile adatoms created through the surface pre-melting.  相似文献

At low coverages, alkaline earth and rare earth layers adsorbed on furrowed transition metal surfaces--such as W(1 1 2) and Mo(1 1 2)--tend to form commensurate linear structures built of monoatomic chains directed across the furrows. Presented Monte Carlo simulations provide insight into parameters of the long-range indirect interaction that, in competition with a dipole-dipole interaction, leads to formation of the linear structures. The most impressive result of the simulations is the revealed repulsive effective interaction between adjacent atoms in linear Sr chains on W(1 1 2) surface. In this case, formation of the linear chains is accomplished due to pronounced minima in the potential of indirect interaction along the surface furrows. This result predicts that a single Sr chain cannot exist on the W(1 1 2) surface.  相似文献

Infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS) was used to investigate carbon monoxide (CO) adsorption on 0.15 nm-thick-0.6 nm-thick Pd-deposited Pt(1 1 1) bimetallic surfaces: Pdx/Pt(1 1 1) (where x is the Pd thickness in nanometers) fabricated using molecular beam epitaxial method at substrate temperatures of 343 K, 473 K, and 673 K. Reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) measurements for Pd0.15-0.6 nm/Pt(1 1 1) surfaces fabricated at 343 K showed that Pd grows epitaxially on a clean Pt(1 1 1), having an almost identical lattice constant of Pt(1 1 1). The 1.0 L CO exposure to the clean Pt(1 1 1) at room temperature yielded linearly bonded and bridge-bonded CO-Pt bands at 2093 and 1855 cm−1. The CO-Pt band intensities for the CO-exposed Pdx/Pt(1 1 1) surfaces decreased with increasing Pd thickness. For Pd0.3 nm/Pt(1 1 1) deposited at 343 K, the 1933 cm−1 band caused by bridge-bonded CO-Pd enhanced the spectral intensity. The linear-bonded CO-Pt band (2090 cm−1) almost disappeared and the bridge-bonded CO-Pd band dominated the spectra for Pd0.6 nm/Pt(1 1 1). With increasing substrate temperature during the Pd depositions, the relative band intensities of the CO-Pt/CO-Pd increased. For the Pd0.3 nm/Pt(1 1 1) deposited at 673 K, the linear-bonded CO-Pt and bridge-bonded CO-Pd bands are located respectively at 2071 and 1928 cm−1. The temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) spectrum for the 673 K-deposited Pd0.3 nm/Pt(1 1 1) showed that a desorption signal for the adsorbed CO on the Pt sites decreased in intensity and shifted ca. 20 K to a lower temperature than those for the clean Pt(1 1 1). We discuss the CO adsorption behavior on well-defined Pd-deposited Pt(1 1 1) bimetallic surfaces.  相似文献

The evolution of N,N′-dimethylperylene-3,4,9,10-dicarboxyimide (Me-PTCDI) thin films formed by vapour deposition on InSb(1 1 1)A substrates has been studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS) and low energy electron diffraction (LEED). XPS studies of the Me-PTCDI covered surface indicate that no significant interaction occurs at sub-monolayer coverage when compared to multilayer Me-PTCDI films. HREELS studies suggest only a weak interaction as evidenced by very small changes in the frequencies of several molecular vibrational modes. LEED patterns show the Me-PTCDI overlayer adopts a structure commensurate with the underlying InSb(1 1 1)A substrate surface and that can be rationalised by van der Waals intermolecular energy calculations for the Me-PTCDI unit cell. The results are consistent with a weak interaction at the Me-PTCDI/InSb interface, the formation of the commensurate structure being sufficient to overcome the small energetic penalty associated with deviation from the calculated intermolecular interaction energy minimum.  相似文献

The atomic structure of LiNbO3(0 0 0 1) surface was investigated by low-energy neutral scattering spectroscopy (LENS). Poled stoichiometric LiNbO3 (SLN) samples were prepared for the measurements. The LENS was developed for surface structure and composition analysis particularly of highly insulating materials and was successfully applied to the structure analysis of the SLN(0 0 0 1) surface. The polar angle dependences of intensity of scattered He0 from the poled SLN surfaces indicate obvious differences between the negatively and the positively charged surfaces. It is suggested that O atoms cover the surfaces, and the first metal layers underneath the O layer consist of Li and Nb for negatively and positively charged surfaces, respectively, parallel to the applied electric field.  相似文献

The growth and hydrogenation of ultra-thin magnesium overlayers have been investigated on a Mo(1 1 1) single crystal substrate. For increasing magnesium coverages we observe intermediate stages in the TPD and LEISS profiles, which illustrate the transition from one monolayer to multilayer growth. Hydrogen cannot be adsorbed on magnesium films under UHV conditions. However, when evaporating Mg in a hydrogen background, a hydrogen overlayer is seen to adsorb at the Mg surface, due to the catalytic interaction with the Mo(1 1 1) substrate and subsequent spill-over. We show that two monolayers of Mg are necessary to sustain this purely adsorbed state. Using predissociated hydrogen we show that the hydride formation is self-stabilizing and the hydride only decomposes at a temperature where a considerable desorption of magnesium occurs.  相似文献

Reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS) has been used to investigate the adsorption of CO on CeO2−x-supported Pd nanoparticles at room temperature. The results show that when CeO2−x is initially grown on Pt(1 1 1), a small proportion of the surface remains as bare Pt sites. However, when Pd is deposited onto CeO2−x/Pt(1 1 1), most of the Pd grows directly on top of the CeO2−x(1 1 1). RAIR spectra of CO adsorption on 1 ML Pd/CeO2−x/Pt(1 1 1) show a broad CO-Pd band, which is inconsistent with a single crystal Pd surface. However, the 5 ML and 10 ML Pd/CeO2−x/Pt(1 1 1) spectra show vibrational bands consistent with the presence of Pd(1 1 1) and (1 0 0) faces, suggesting the growth of Pd nanostructures with well defined facets.  相似文献

Exposure of the As-terminated GaAs(0 0 1)-c(4 × 4) reconstructed surface to atomic hydrogen (H) at different substrate temperatures (50-480 °C) has been studied by reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) and scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM). Hydrogen exposure at low temperatures (∼50 °C) produces a disordered (1 × 1) surface covered with AsHx clusters. At higher temperatures (150-400 °C) exposure to hydrogen leads to the formation of mixed c(2 × 2) and c(4 × 2) surface domains with H adsorbed on surface Ga atoms that are exposed due to the H induced loss of As from the surface. At the highest temperature (480 °C) a disordered (2 × 4) reconstruction is formed due to thermal desorption of As from the surface. The results are consistent with the loss of As from the surface, either through direct thermal desorption or as a result of the desorption of volatile compounds which form after reaction with H.  相似文献

The structure of ultrathin Mo films on SrTiO3(1 0 0) was studied by in situ reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED). A different structure was observed for films less than 20 Å thick than for thicker films. These films were epitaxial and had a metastable structure. Thicker films had the dimensions of equilibrium bcc Mo(1 1 0). Relaxation processes transformed the metastable Mo into bcc Mo, resulting in the following orientation relationships between Mo and SrTiO3: (1 1 0)[0 0 1]bcc Mo ∥ (1 0 0)[0 0 1]SrTiO3 and (1 1 0)[1 1 1]bcc Mo ∥ (1 0 0)[0 1 1]SrTiO3. The formation of such specific orientations is related to transformations via the Bain and Needle Path, respectively.  相似文献

The solid-phase epitaxial growth process and surface structure of MnSi on Si(1 1 1) were investigated by coaxial impact-collision ion scattering spectroscopy (CAICISS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). For the Si(1 1 1) sample deposited with 30 monolayers (ML) of Mn at room temperature, the intermixing of Mn and Si gradually started at 100 °C and reached equilibrium at approximately 400 °C. At this equilibrium state, the Mn atoms were transformed into crystalline MnSi film. Further annealing caused the desorption of Mn atoms. We identified the structure of MnSi as cubic B20 and the crystallographic orientation relationships as Si(1 1 1)//MnSi(1 1 1) and Si[]//MnSi[]. The MnSi(1 1 1) surface was found to have a dense Si terminating layer on its topmost surface. On the other hand, 3 ML of Mn deposited on Si(1 1 1) reacted with Si even at room temperature and formed a pseudomorphic structure. This structure was transformed into MnSi after annealing. A filmlike morphology with protrusions was observed for the sample with 30 ML of Mn, while island growth occurred for the sample with 3 ML of Mn.  相似文献
