We generalize Tollmien’s solutions of the Rayleigh problem of hydrodynamic stability to the case of arbitrary channel cross sections, known as the extended Rayleigh problem. We prove the existence of a neutrally stable eigensolution with wave number k s ?>?0; it is also shown that instability is possible only for 0?<?k?<?k s and not for k?>?k s . Then we generalize the Tollmien–Lin perturbation formula for the behavior of c i, the imaginary part of the phase velocity as the wave number kk s ? to the extended Rayleigh problem and subsequently, we use this formula to demonstrate the instability of a particular shear flow.  相似文献

For the extended Taylor-Goldstein problem of hydrodynamic stability governing the stability of shear flows of an inviscid, incompressible but density stratified fluid in sea straits of arbitrary cross-section a new estimate for the growth rate of an arbitrary unstable normal mode is given for a class of basic flows. Furthermore the Howard’s conjecture, namely, the growth rate kc i → 0 as the wave number k → ∞ is proved for two classes of basic flows.  相似文献

2011年,Kittipoom等人引入了一类新的切波生成函数空间,并指出此空间拥有许多优秀的性质,例如,该空间在平方可积函数空间中稠密,由该空间中元素生成的切波框架拥有强齐次逼近性质等.本文的主要目的是研究由Kittipoom等人引入的切波生成函数空间中的元素生成切波框架的充分条件及由该空间中的元素生成的切波框架的稳定性.具体而言,首先参考由Dahlke等人引入的切波群的定义将Kittipoom等人引入的切波群的定义进行适当调整,使得由Kittipoom等人引入的切波生成函数空间中每个元素都是可允许的;其次得到由该切波生成函数空间中任意一个元素和任意一个相对分离的稠密点列可形成一个切波框架;最后证明这些框架在时间、尺度和剪切参数或生成函数发生小扰动时仍然形成切波框架.这些结论使得切波框架在工程应用方面有着极大的灵活性和实用性.  相似文献

Summary. In this paper, we study the inverse eigenvalue problem of a specially structured Jacobi matrix, which arises from the discretization of the differential equation governing the axial of a rod with varying cross section (Ram and Elhay 1998 Commum. Numer. Methods Engng. 14 597-608). We give a sufficient and some necessary conditions for such inverse eigenvalue problem to have solutions. Based on these results, a simple method for the reconstruction of a Jacobi matrix from eigenvalues is developed. The equation (1) is regarded as a perturbation of (2) , where the latter is nonoscillatory at infinity. The functions are assumed to be continuous real-valued, , whereas is continuous complex-valued. A problem of Hartman and Wintner regarding the asymptotic integration of (1) for large by means of solutions of (2) is studied. A new statement of this problem is proposed, which is equivalent to the original one if is real-valued. In the general case of being complex-valued a criterion for the solvability of the Hartman-Wintner problem in the new formulation is obtained. The result improves upon the related theorems of Hartman and Wintner, Trench, Simsa and some results of Chen.

Necessary and sufficient conditions are established for the convergence of various iterative methods for solving the linear complementarity problem. The fundamental tool used is the classical notion of matrix splitting in numerical analysis. The results derived are similar to some well-known theorems on the convergence of iterative methods for square systems of linear equations. Several modifications of the classical Saffman formulation of the dusty-gas flow linear stability problem are considered. Dispersed flows are described by a two-fluid model. Linear stability problems are reduced to the solution of modified Orr-Sommerfeld equations which are solved by the orthogonalization method.
