A magnetic resonance velocimetry (MRV) experimental technique based on magnetic resonance imaging and capable of measuring the turbulent Reynolds stresses in a 3D flow domain is described. Results are presented in backward facing step flow in a square channel with a Reynolds number of 48,000 based on step height and freestream velocity at the step. MRV results are compared to particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements in the centerplane containing the streamwise and cross-stream axes. MRV and PIV mean velocity measurements show excellent agreement. MRV measurements for Reynolds normal stresses compare to within ±20% of the PIV results while results for the turbulent shear are less accurate.  相似文献

Particle image velocimetry (PIV) was employed to study the flow patterns, time-averaged velocity field, and turbulence properties of the flow in the interdisk midplane between two shrouded co-rotating disks at the interdisk spacing to disk radius ratio S = 0.1 and rotating Reynolds number Re = 2.25 × 105. A quadrangle core flow structure rotating at a frequency 75% of the disks’ rotating frequency was observed. The flow in the region outside the quadrangle core flow structure consisted of four cellular flow structures. Five characteristic flow regions—the hub-influenced region, solid-body rotation region, buffer region, vortex region, and shroud-influenced region—were identified in the flow field. Circumferential and radial turbulence intensities, Reynolds stresses, turbulence kinetic energy, correlation coefficients, as well as the Lagrangian integral time and length scales of turbulent fluctuations were analyzed and presented. Features of the turbulence properties were found to be closely related to the rotation motion of the inner and outer characteristic flow structures. The circumferential components of the turbulence properties exhibited local minima in the buffer region and maxima in the solid-body rotation and vortex regions, while the radial components of the turbulence intensity, turbulent normal stress, and Lagrangian integral turbulence time scale exhibited maximum values in the buffer region and relatively low values in the regions near the hub and the shroud.  相似文献

Particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements were carried out on a backward-facing step flow at a Reynolds number of Reh=UXh/9=4,660 (based on step height and freestream velocity). In-plane velocity, out-of-plane vorticity, Reynolds stress and turbulent kinetic energy production measurements in the x-y and x-z planes of the flow are presented. Proper orthogonal decomposition was performed on both the fluctuating velocity and vorticity fields of the x-y plane PIV data using the method of snapshots. Low-order representations of the instantaneous velocity fields were reconstructed using the velocity modes. These reconstructions provided insight into the contribution that the various length scales make to the spatial distribution of mean and turbulent flow quantities such as Reynolds stress and turbulent kinetic energy production. Large scales are found to contribute to the Reynolds stresses and turbulent kinetic energy production downstream of reattachment, while small scales contribute to the intense Reynolds stresses in the vicinity of reattachment.  相似文献

As part of an ongoing research project the performance and internal flow field of a high-pressure ratio centrifugal compressor is being investigated. Based on previous, primarily, point-wise laser-optical measurements the compressor was redesigned and resulted in an improved impeller and diffuser with a single-stage pressure ratio of 6:1 at 50,000 rpm. Current research activities involve the use of particle image velocimetry (PIV) to analyze and further improve the understanding of the complex flow phenomena inside the vaned diffuser given the capability of PIV of capturing spatial structures. The study includes phase-resolved measurements of the flow inside a diffuser vane passage with respect to the impeller blade position. Both, instantaneous and phase-averaged velocity fields are presented. The flow field results obtained by PIV are to be used for future validation of the related CFD calculations, which in turn are expected to lead to further improvements in compressor performance. In addition, the potential of stereo PIV for this type of turbomachinery application could be successfully demonstrated.  相似文献

Two-dimensional flow over periodically arranged hills was investigated experimentally in a water channel. Two-dimensional particle image velocimetry (PIV) and one-dimensional laser Doppler anemometry (LDA) measurements were undertaken at four Reynolds numbers ( \text5,600 £ Re £ \text37,000\text{5,600} \le Re \le \text{37,000}). Two-dimensional PIV field measurements were thoroughly validated by means of point-by-point 1D LDA measurements at certain positions of the flow. A detailed study of the periodicity and the homogeneity was undertaken, which demonstrates that the flow can be regarded as two-dimensional and periodic for Re 3 \text10,000Re \ge \text{10,000}. We found a decreasing reattachment length with increasing Reynolds number. This is connected to a higher momentum in the near-wall zone close to flow separation which comes from the velocity speed up above the obstacle. This leads to a velocity overshoot directly above the hill crest which increases with Reynolds number as the inner layer depth decreases. The flow speed up above that layer is independent of the Reynolds number which supports the assumption of inviscid flow disturbance in the outer layer usually made in asymptotic theory for flow over small hills.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of velocity measurements of natural convection in symmetrically heated vertical channel using the particle image velocimetry (PIV) system. Velocity measurements were conducted at three different sections on the horizontal plane to validate the flow two-dimensionality and at three different heights in the vertical plane to establish vertical mean velocity profiles. The results indicate a considerable influence of the Rayleigh number and aspect ratio on the mean velocity profile. The results also indicate significant diffusion rates of the vertical mean velocity component and normal Reynolds stresses towards the center of the channel.  相似文献

The turbulent velocity field over the rib-roughened wall of an orthogonally rotating channel is investigated by means of two-dimensional particle image velocimetry (PIV). The flow direction is outward, with a bulk Reynolds number of 1.5 × 104 and a rotation number ranging from 0.3 to 0.38. The measurements are obtained along the wall-normal/streamwise plane at mid-span. The PIV system rotates with the channel, allowing to measure directly the relative flow velocity with high spatial resolution. Coriolis forces affect the stability of the boundary layer and free shear layer. Due to the different levels of shear layer entrainment, the reattachment point is moved downstream (upstream) under stabilizing (destabilizing) rotation, with respect to the stationary case. Further increase in rotation number pushes further the reattachment point in stabilizing rotation, but does not change the recirculation length in destabilizing rotation. Turbulent activity is inhibited along the leading wall, both in the boundary layer and in the separated shear layer; the opposite is true along the trailing wall. Coriolis forces affect indirectly the production of turbulent kinetic energy via the Reynolds shear stresses and the mean shear. Two-point correlation is used to characterize the coherent motion of the separated shear layer. Destabilizing rotation is found to promote large-scale coherent motions and accordingly leads to larger integral length scales; on the other hand, the spanwise vortices created in the separating shear layer downstream of the rib are less organized and tend to be disrupted by the three-dimensional turbulence promoted by the rotation. The latter observation is consistent with the distributions of span-wise vortices detected in instantaneous flow realizations.  相似文献

The flow field of a channel rotating about the streamwise axis is analyzed experimentally and numerically. The current investigations were carried out at a bulk velocity based Reynolds number of Rem = 2850 and a friction velocity based Reynolds number of Reτ = 180, respectively. Particle-image velocimetry (PIV) measurements are compared with large-eddy simulation data to show earlier direct numerical simulation findings to generate too large a reverse flow region in the center region of the spanwise flow. The development of the mean spanwise velocity distribution and the influence of the rotation on the turbulent properties, i.e., the Reynolds stresses and the two-point correlations of the flow, are confirmed in both investigations. The rotation primarily influences those components of the Reynolds shear stresses, which contain the spanwise velocity component. The size of the correlation areas and thus the length scales of the flow generally grow in all three coordinate directions leading to longer structures. Furthermore, experimental results of the same channel flow at a significantly lower bulk Reynolds number of Rem, l = 665, i.e., a laminar flow in a non-rotating channel, are introduced. The experiments show the low Reynolds number flow to become turbulent under rotation and to develop the same characteristics as the high Reynolds number flow.  相似文献

Particle image velocimetry (PIV) and pressure loss measurements were used to investigate slow flow through a square array of cylinders having a solid fraction of 10%. The test fluids were a Newtonian fluid and a Boger fluid, both of high viscosity such that the Reynolds number did not exceed 0.1. The pressure loss data reveal that the onset of elastic effects occurred at a Deborah number around 0.5 and that flow resistance was up to several times Newtonian values at Deborah numbers up to 3. PIV showed that the transverse velocity profiles for the Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluid were the same at Deborah numbers below onset. Above onset, the profiles became skewed, increasingly so as the Deborah number increased. In the wake regions between cylinders in a column, periodic flow structures formed in the spanwise direction. The structures were staggered from column to column, consistent with the skewing and were offset. These flow patterns are the result of an apparent elastic instability.  相似文献

The technical basis and system set-up of a dual-plane stereoscopic particle image velocimetry (PIV) system, which can obtain the flow velocity (all three components) fields at two spatially separated planes simultaneously, is summarized. The simultaneous measurements were achieved by using two sets of double-pulsed Nd:Yag lasers with additional optics to illuminate the objective fluid flow with two orthogonally linearly polarized laser sheets at two spatially separated planes, as proposed by Kaehler and Kompenhans in 1999. The light scattered by the tracer particles illuminated by laser sheets with orthogonal linear polarization were separated by using polarizing beam-splitter cubes, then recorded by high-resolution CCD cameras. A three-dimensional in-situ calibration procedure was used to determine the relationships between the 2-D image planes and three-dimensional object fields for both position mapping and velocity three-component reconstruction. Unlike conventional two-component PIV systems or single-plane stereoscopic PIV systems, which can only get one-component of vorticity vectors, the present dual-plane stereoscopic PIV system can provide all the three components of the vorticity vectors and various auto-correlation and cross-correlation coefficients of flow variables instantaneously and simultaneously. The present dual-plane stereoscopic PIV system was applied to measure an air jet mixing flow exhausted from a lobed nozzle. Various vortex structures in the lobed jet mixing flow were revealed quantitatively and instantaneously. In order to evaluate the measurement accuracy of the present dual-plane stereoscopic PIV system, the measurement results were compared with the simultaneous measurement results of a laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV) system. It was found that both the instantaneous data and ensemble-averaged values of the stereoscopic PIV measurement results and the LDV measurement results agree well. For the ensemble-averaged values of the out-of-plane velocity component at comparison points, the differences between the stereoscopic PIV and LDV measurement results were found to be less than 2%. Details of the turbulent flow in a 1:8 aspect ratio rectangular duct at a Reynolds number of approximately 5800 were investigated both numerically and experimentally. The three-dimensional mean velocity field and the normal stresses were measured at a position 50 hydraulic diameters downstream from the inlet using laser doppler velocimetry (LDV). Numerical simulations were carried out for the same flow case assuming fully developed conditions by imposing cyclic boundary conditions in the main flow direction. The numerical approach was based on the finite volume technique with a non-staggered grid arrangement and the SIMPLEC algorithm. Results have been obtained with a linear and a non-linear (Speziale) k–ε model, combined with the Lam–Bremhorst damping functions for low Reynolds numbers. The secondary flow patterns, as well as the magnitude of the main flow and overall parameters predicted by the non-linear k–ε model, show good agreement with the experimental results. However, the simulations provide less anisotropy in the normal stresses than the measurements. Also, the magnitudes of the secondary velocities close to the duct corners are underestimated. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

PIV measurements are performed in a channel with periodic ribs on one wall. The emphasis of this study is to investigate the flow structures in the vicinity of a rib in terms of mean velocities, Reynolds stresses, probability density functions (PDF), and two-point correlations. The PDF distribution of u′ is bimodal in the separated shear layer downstream of the rib. The maximum Reynolds shear stresses occur at the leading edge of the rib. Based on quadrant analysis, it is found that ejection motions make a dominant contribution to the Reynolds shear stress in this region. Moreover, topology-based visualization is applied to the separation bubble upstream of the rib. Salient critical points and limit cycles are extracted, which gives clues to the physical processes occurring in the flow.  相似文献

Escherichia coli (E. coli) and other bacteria are propelled through water by several helical flagella, which are rotated by motors embedded at random points on the cell wall. Depending on the handedness and rotation sense, the motion of the flagella induces a flow field that causes them to wrap around each other and form a bundle. Our objective is to understand and model the mechanics of this process. Full-scale flagella are 10 m in length, 20 nm in diameter, and turn at a rate of 100 Hz. To accurately simulate bundling at a more easily observable scale, we built a scale model in which 20-cm-long helices are rotated in 100,000 cp silicone oil (Poly-di-methyl-siloxane). The highly viscous oil ensures an appropriately low Reynolds number. We developed a macro-scale particle image velocimetry (PIV) system to measure the full-field velocity distribution for rotating rigid helices and rotating flexible helices. In the latter case, the helices were made from epoxy-filled plastic tubing to give approximately the same ratio of elastic to viscous stresses as in the full-scale flagella. Comparison between PIV measurements and slender-body calculations shows good agreement for the case of rigid helices. For the flexible helices, we find that the flow field generated by a bundle in the steady state is well approximated by the flow generated by a single rigid helix with twice the filament radius.  相似文献

The fluid flow field within an enclosed cylindrical chamber with a rotating flat disc was calculated using a finite volume computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model and compared with particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements. Two particular laminar cases near the Transitional flow regime were investigated: Reynolds number Re=2.5×1 4, chamber aspect ratio G (h/Rd)=0.2 and Re=4.2×104, G (h/Rd)=0.217. This enabled direct comparison with the numerical and experimental results reported by other researchers. The computational details and some major factors that affect the computed accuracy and convergence speed are also discussed in detail. PIV results containing some 4300 velocity vector points in each of seven planes for each case were obtained from the flow field parallel to the rotating disc. It was found that PIV results could be obtained in planes within the boundary layers as well as the core flow by careful use of a thin laser illumination sheet and correct choice of laser pulse separation. There was close agreement between numerical results, the present PIV measurements and other reported experimental and numerical results.  相似文献

Stereo particle image velocimetry (PIV) has been employed to study a vortex generated via tangential injection of water in a 2.25 inch (57 mm) diameter pipe for Reynolds numbers ranging from 1,118 to 63,367. Methods of decreasing pipe-induced optical distortion and the PIV calibration technique are addressed. The mean velocity field analyses have shown spatial similarity and revealed four distinct flow regions starting from the central axis of rotation to the pipe wall in the vortex flows. Turbulence statistical data and vortex core location data suggest that velocity fluctuations are due to the axis of the in-line vortex distorting in the shape of a spiral.  相似文献

A new facility for time-resolved PIV measurements in rotating channels   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
A new facility to measure the time evolution of 2D velocity fields in a rotating channel is presented, and the accuracy is discussed in detail. Measurements are made by means of a time-resolved PIV system composed of a continuous laser diode, coupled by a fiber optics cable to a laser plane optical module, and a CMOS high-speed camera. Both the PIV system and divergent channel are fixed on a 2.5 m rotating disk. This allows a direct measurement of the relative velocity of flows with Reynolds numbers between 3 × 103 and 3 × 104 and Rotation numbers between 0.0 and 0.52. These values correspond to the flow conditions in small radial impellers and can be independently adjusted by a change of the relative flow velocity and RPM. It is shown that this new facility allows high signal-to-noise ratios, and that the direct acquisition of the data in a rotating frame drastically reduces the measurement error. The accuracy and high spatial and temporal resolution of the measurements allow a detailed analysis of boundary layer characteristics in stationary and rotating conditions.  相似文献

Imaging laser Doppler velocimetry (ILDV) is a novel flow measurement technique, which enables the measurement of the velocity in an imaging plane. It is an evolution of heterodyne Doppler global velocimetry (HDGV) and may be regarded as the planar extension of the classical dual-beam laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV) by crossing light sheets in the flow instead of focused laser beams. Seeding particles within the flow are illuminated from two different directions, and the light scattered from the moving particles exhibits a frequency shift due to the Doppler effect. The frequency shift depends on the direction of the illumination and the velocity of the particle. The superposition of the two different frequency-shifted signals on the detector creates interference and leads to an amplitude modulated signal wherein the modulation frequency depends on the velocity of the particle. This signal is detected using either a high-speed camera or alternatively a smart pixel imaging array. This detector array performs a quadrature detection on each pixel with a maximum demodulation frequency of 250 kHz. To demonstrate the feasibility of the technique, two experiments are presented: The first experiment compares the measured velocity distribution of a free jet using ILDV performed with the smart pixel detector array and a high-speed camera with a reference measurement using PIV. The second experiment shows an advanced setup using two smart pixel detector arrays to measure the velocity distribution on a rotating disk, demonstrating the potential of the technique for high-velocity flow measurements.  相似文献

The structure of the Reynolds stress in the near-wall region of a fully developed turbulent pipe flow, at a pipe Reynolds number of 8,923, was investigated. Because the closed circuit tunnel used glycerine as a working fluid, measurements could be readily made inside the viscous sublayer. Two laser Doppler velocimeter (LDV) systems were combined to measure the two point spatial correlation, R 12, between the stream wise and radial velocities in a radial plane of the pipe. The correlation measurements extended over the region from y + of 2 to 64 in the direction normal to the pipe wall and covered more than 800 wall units in the streamwise direction. Two-dimensional maps of the correlation coefficient were established for six different distances of the streamwise velocity probe from the wall. The use of LDV systems allowed the measurements to be made for small spatial separations of the probes without fear of probe interference effects. A characteristic feature of the correlation contour maps, that maxium correlation arises for small non-zero separation of the probes, may not have been observed had invasive techniques been employed.  相似文献

A new and unique high-resolution image acquisition system for digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV) in turbulent flows is used for the measurement of fully-developed turbulent pipe flow at a Reynolds number of 5300. The flow conditions of the pipe flow match those of a direct numerical simulation (DNS) and of measurements with conventional (viz., photographic) PIV and with laser-Doppler velocimetry (LDV). This experiment allows a direct and detailed comparison of the conventional and digital implementations of the PIV method for a non-trivial unsteady flow. The results for the turbulence statistics and power spectra show that the level of accuracy for DPIV is comparable to that of conventional PIV, despite a considerable difference in the interrogation pixel resolution, i.e. 32 × 32 (DPIV) versus 256 × 256 (PIV). This result is in agreement with an earlier analytical prediction for the measurement accuracy. One of the advantages of DPIV over conventional PIV is that the interrogation of the DPIV images takes only a fraction of the time needed for the interrogation of the PIV photographs.  相似文献

Effects of dilute polymer solutions on a lid-driven cubical cavity turbulent flow are studied via particle image velocimetry (PIV). This canonical flow is a combination of a bounded shear flow, driven at constant velocity and vortices that change their spatial distribution as a function of the lid velocity. From the two-dimensional PIV data we estimate the time averaged spatial fields of key turbulent quantities. We evaluate a component of the vorticity–velocity correlation, namely 〈ω3v〉, which shows much weaker correlation, along with the reduced correlation of the fluctuating velocity components, u and v. There are two contributions to the reduced turbulent kinetic energy production −〈u vSuv, namely the reduced Reynolds stresses, −〈u v〉, and strongly modified pointwise correlation of the Reynolds stress and the mean rate-of-strain field, Suv. The Reynolds stresses are shown to be affected because of the derivatives of the Reynolds stresses, u v〉/∂y that are strongly reduced in the same regions as the vorticity–velocity correlation. The results, combined with the existing evidence, support the phenomenological model of polymer effects propagating from the polymer scale to the velocity derivatives and through the mixed-type correlations and Reynolds stress derivatives up to the turbulent velocity fields. The effects are shown to be qualitatively similar in different flows regardless of forcing type, homogeneity or presence of liquid–solid boundaries.  相似文献
