Based on a solution of the stationary modified Bloch equations, an investigation is made of the influence of the effect of internal optical bistability (IOB) on the behavior of the refractive index of a dense resonance medium as a function of the constant b of closerange dipoledipole interactions, frequency detuning, and the intensity of optical radiation. The conditions of existence of the IOB effect of the system dense resonance medium + optical radiation are found and the dynamics of the loop width of the hysteresis dependence of the population difference of the resonance levels of the medium on the characteristics of the system is traced. The domains of the parameters are determined in which the effects of selffocusing and selfdefocusing of the radiation propagating in a dense resonance medium can take place.  相似文献

We investigate the optical bistability behavior of a three-level closed-loop atomic system beyond the multi-photon resonance condition. Using the Floquet decomposition, we solve the time-dependent equations of motion, beyond the multi-photon resonance condition. By identifying the different scattering processes contributing to the medium response, it is shown that in general the optical bistability behavior of the system is not phase-dependent. The phase dependence is due to the scattering of the driving and coupling fields into the probe field at a frequency, which, in general, differs from the probe field frequency.  相似文献

A novel scheme for optical bistability in a coherently driven three level atomic system is proposed. The scheme utilizes the non absorption resonance which occurs due to a population trapping in a coherent superposition of the ground state sublevels. The resulting optical bistability occurs for a lower threshold power than for a two level system and is insensitive to Doppler and laser bandwidth effects.  相似文献

We investigate the optical bistability (OB) and optical multi-stability (OM) in a four-level N-type atomic system. The effect of spontaneously generated coherence (SGC) on OB and OM is then discussed. It is found that SGC makes the medium phase dependent, so the optical bistability and multi-stability threshold can be controlled via relative phase between applied fields. We realize that the frequency detuning of probe and coupling fields with the corresponding atomic transition plays an important role in creation OB and OM. Moreover, the effect of laser coupling fields and an incoherent pumping field on reduction of OB and OM threshold is then discussed.  相似文献

We theoretically investigate the optical bistability, which one input signal allows two possible outputs, from single spherical/cylindrical nanoparticles and also nanoshells in the frame work of quasi-static formalism. It is shown that the bistability behavior greatly depends on several parameters such as the nanoparticle size, material and the surrounding dielectric environment. We demonstrated the width of the bistability region and also the bistable threshold depends on the geometrical parameters, and can be tuned by adjusting the size of nanoparticle, the shell thickness and the dielectric constant of the embedding medium. It is also shown that the optical bistable behavior depends strongly on the shape of plasmonic nanoparticles and nanoshells. However, these dependences of optical bistability of spherical/cylindrical nanoparticles and nanoshells on changing of their geometrical parameters can be used for realize optical switching and sensing purposes.  相似文献

We have explored the possibility of observing bistability of the frequency dependence of transmission of a thin (less than the wavelength of the acting laser radiation) surface layer of active atoms. For the external field strength corresponding to the transition saturation, we predict the hysteresis behavior of transmission on separate portions of the dependence and sharp asymmetry of resonance curves of absorption if the influence on the dielectric constant of the medium of a layer of transitions adjacent to the resonance one and capable of interacting with radiation is taken into account.  相似文献

The optical bistability and multistability behavior in a ring cavity for the four-level open atomic system, driven by two coupling fields has been analyzed. It is shown that the presence of exit rate from cavity is having a dominant effect on generating the optical bi(multi) stability on the system. It is found that the effects of the injection rates can be used to control the threshold intensity. It is also found that optical bistability can convert to optical multistability or vice versa via the effect of intensity and detuning of the coupling fields.  相似文献

In this paper, the effect of plasmonic nanostructure on behavior of optical bistability and multistability in a four-level quantum system embedded in a unidirectional ring cavity has been studied. It is found that the distance between plasmonic nanostructures and a four-level quantum system is varied from 4.4 nm to 14.4 nm and has an essential role for controlling the threshold of optical bistability and multistability. Moreover, obtained results show that the group velocity of pulse propagation through the medium is strongly depended on the distance between the plasmonic nanostructure and the four-level quantum system.  相似文献

Scattering of resonant radiation in a dense two-level medium is studied theoretically accounting for local field effects and renormalisation of the resonance frequency. Intrinsic optical bistability is viewed as switching between different spectral patterns of fluorescent light controlled by the incident field strength. Response spectra are calculated analytically for the entire hysteresis loop of atomic excitation. The equations to describe the non-linear interaction of an atomic ensemble with light are derived from the Bogolubov-Born-Green-Kirkwood-Yvon hierarchy for reduced single particle density matrices of atoms and quantised field modes and their correlation operators. The spectral power of scattered light with separated coherent and incoherent constituents is obtained straightforwardly within the hierarchy. The formula obtained for emission spectra can be used to distinguish between possible mechanisms suggested to produce intrinsic bistability in experiments.  相似文献

The conditions for the realization of absorption optical bistability under the simultaneous action of two (radiative and nonradiative) mechanisms of recombination of free charge carriers are investigated. It is shown that, in the diffusion mechanism of stream of free electrons from the beam axis, the temperature dependence of radiative recombination does not expand the temperature range of the thermostat in which the optical bistability occurs. A scheme is proposed with application of an external transverse electric field, which makes it possible to realize absorption optical bistability at any ambient temperature. An important advantage of this scheme is the conservation of the state of a bistable system after the action of a light pulse and a significant decrease in the energy spent on cooling of the medium.  相似文献

Nonlinear optical properties of dye J-aggregates embedded in a one-dimensional periodic medium are analyzed theoretically and numerically. The effect of strain-induced exciton self-localization in a chain of monomers on nonlinear optical properties of the system is investigated for weakly and highly ordered J-aggregates. It is found that exciton self-localization in a periodic medium enhances light absorption and effective optical susceptibility. Optical bistability thresholds are examined for weakly and strongly excited dye J-aggregate thin films. It is shown that the threshold intensity of incident electromagnetic field is lower by more than an order of magnitude as compared to that for a homogeneous medium.  相似文献

A novel four level atomic configuration is proposed for controlling the optical bistability and transmission coefficient with application on all-optical switching. Two circularly polarized components from a weak linearly-polarized probe beam are interacted separately by two transitions of this medium. A coherent coupling field has derived another atomic transition. It is demonstrated that the transmission coefficient of two orthogonally polarized beams at different frequencies can be achieved by adjusting the magnitude of the external magnetic field. It is found that the threshold of the optical bistability can be controlled by magnitude of the external magnetic field. Also, it is shown that optical bistability can be converted to optical multistability by switching the two orthogonally polarized beams.  相似文献

We theoretically investigate the Doppler effect on optical bistability in an N-type active Raman gain atomic system inside an optical ring cavity.It is shown that the Doppler effect can greatly enhance the dispersion and thus create the bistable behaviour or greatly increase the bistable region,which has been known as the positive Doppler effect on optical bistability.In addition,we find that a positive Doppler effect can change optical bistability from the hybrid dispersion-gain type to a dispersive type.  相似文献

Intensity threshold of optical bistability (OB) and optical multistability (OM) can be controlled by amplitude and phase control of microwave driven field in the two-photon resonance transitions in a parametric region. It is found that in two-photon resonance case, the weak microwave field can reduce the threshold of optical bistability and strong microwave field can lead to optical multistability. The effect of relative phase between applied fields is also discussed. It is shown that for weak and strong microwave field, intensity threshold of OB and OM can be modified. Moreover, it is found that for strong microwave field, relative phase has an essential role for switching between OB and OM or vice versa.  相似文献

We investigate a hybrid optomechanical system consisting of two coupled cavities, one of them is composed of two-end fixed mirrors(called the traditional cavity), and the other has a one-end oscillating mirror(named as the optomechanical eavity). A Kerr medium is inside the traditional cavity to enhance the nonlinearity due to the fact that it can cause observing of bistable behavior in intracavity intensity for the optomechanical cavity.The Hamiltonian of the system is written in a rotating frame and its dynamics is described by quantum Langevin equations of motion. Our proposed s.ystem exhibits unconventional plots for the mean photon number of the optomechanical cavity which are not observed in previous works. The present results show a deep effect of the Kerr medium on optical bistability of intracavity intensity for the optomechanical cavity. Also, coupling strength of the cavities can effectively change the stability of the system.  相似文献

Transmission properties of one-dimensional photonic crystal with two nonlinear defects were investigated based on the nonlinear transfer matrix method. From the inspection of the optical bistabilities around different defect modes, it was found that the threshold of bistability for the bonding mode is always lower than that for the anti-bonding mode. When intensity of the incident wave increases bistability could happen at any wavelength larger than the resonance wavelength of the linear anti-bonding mode in the gap. The threshold of bistability increases initially with the wavelength, then decreases sharply in reaching the resonance wavelength of the linear bonding mode. The coupling behavior of the two defects was also discussed, and it was found that the threshold of bistability increases with the distance between the two defects. A flat spectrum similar to that formed in the photonic crystal molecules was obtained under certain incident intensity.  相似文献

本文针对Kerr相互作用下系统中量子相干性的动力学分布进行了研究.所讨论系统包含两个没有相互作用的原子,每个原子都被囚禁在各自的光腔中,同时光腔被充满了非线性Kerr介质.研究发现非线性Kerr相互作用能够增加两原子间的量子相干性,而且增大的幅度会随着Kerr相互作用强度的增加而得以提高.其次,借助迹距离的方法,还探讨了非线性Kerr相互作用对于原子与光腔之间的量子信息流动的影响,发现Kerr相互作用可以加快量子信息回流到原子子系统中,抑制原子子系统与其余子系统间的量子信息交换,阻碍量子信息在系统中不同子系统间的流动,从而保护原子子系统中拥有的量子信息.  相似文献

We propose and study a coupling system composed of the tapered fiber and the microsphere with nonlinear medium. The optical bistability and differential amplification caused by optical Kerr effect is demonstrated using a geometrical method. We show that their operation characteristics can be controlled by parameters: linear phase detuning, attenuation coefficient and real amplitude coupling coefficient.  相似文献

We present a comparative review of two classes of optical solitons—conservative and dissipative solitons—propagating in single-mode optical fibers in which refractive-index gratings are induced such that their period is comparable with the radiation wavelength. Fibers that have the Kerr nonlinearity and negligibly small losses and that do not gain radiation (conservative system) are described by traditional equations of the approximation of slowly varying amplitudes, and effects caused by the nonlinearity of the medium, such as nonlinear switching, optical bistability, and formation of conservative Bragg solitons are considered. It is shown that the passage beyond the scope of the approximation of slowly varying amplitudes makes it possible to describe new important effects, including localization of soliton centers near maxima of the refractive-index grating. Bright and dark conservative solitons are demonstrated, which are formed when the Kerr nonlinearity is replaced by the nonlinearity of two-level atomic systems. The properties of conservative solitons in resonance semiconductor Bragg structures with quantum wells are considered. Results of experimental studies of nonlinear effects in fibers with Bragg gratings are presented. For an active single-mode fiber with a Bragg refractive-index grating and nonlinear gain and absorption, dissipative solitons are described using the approximation of slowly varying amplitudes and inertialess nonlinearity. It is shown that the dissipative factors qualitatively change the properties of solitons compared to the conservative case. Using the Maxwell-Bloch equations, it is demonstrated that the ratio between the gain and absorption relaxation times significantly affects the stability of localized structures. The interaction of dissipative optical Bragg solitons is described. It is shown that, beyond the scope of the approximation of slowly varying amplitudes, the average velocity of propagating dissipative Bragg solitons acquires only discrete values, and formation of pairs of solitons with two values of the phase difference becomes possible. For a birefringent fiber, dissipative vector optical Bragg solitons are demonstrated.  相似文献
