The apparent lifelessness of the Ross Desert is in marked contrast to the diversity of cryptoendolithic microorganisms inhabiting the interstices of sandstone rocks. The endolithic habitat provides a protective niche for lichens, bacteria, algae, and fungi, enabling them to exist in an extremely dry and cold climate. Composed solely of microorganisms living under the surface of rocks and totally lacking animals and protozoa, this ecosystem is controlled by measurable physical variables and well suited for ecosystem study and modeling. The work of the antarctic cryptoendolithic microbial ecosystem research group has involved physical measurements of nanoclimate (microbial environment inside rocks) (Friedmann, McKay, and Nienow 1987), taxonomy (Darling, Friedmann, and Broady 1987; Hale 1987), microdistribution, organism-substrate interactions including the ongoing process of fossilization (Friedmann and Weed 1987), physiological ecology, and quantification of the nitrogen economy.  相似文献

A sample of the liverwort Cephaloziella varians was collected on 1 January 1999 at Rothera Point on the Wright Peninsula, Adelaide Island, western Antarctic Peninsula and was partially dried and then frozen at -80 degree C. The sample was rapidly defrosted to c. 10 degree C after six years and two months of storage at this temperature. Nematodes, tardigrades and a bdelloid rotifer present in the sample were found to have survived. Of the 159 nematodes recovered from the sample, 49 (31%) were alive: of the tardigrades and rotifers, two of 15 (13%) and one of 48 (2%) had survived, respectively. A Chi-square test showed that there was a significant association between nematode taxon and survival: a greater proportion of Coomansus gerlachei individuals were alive than of Rhyssocolpus paradoxus. A Chi-square test also showed that there was a significant association between phylum and survival: a significantly greater proportion of nematodes or tardigrades were alive than of bdelloid rotifers. We conclude that Antarctic soil metazoans are capable of surviving long-term exposure to low sub-zero temperatures and that there may be taxon-specific effects of freezing on survival.  相似文献

Before beginning Part 2 of this review, a caveat noted by Deming and Palasota is brought to the reader's attention: [1] “Press et al. [2] have emphasized that data ‘consist of numbers, of course. But these numbers are fed into the computer, not produced by it. These are numbers to be treated with considerable respect, never to be tampered with, nor subjected to a numerical process whose character you do not completely understand. You are well advised to acquire reverence for data that is rather diferent fiom the “sporty” attitude which is sometimes allowable, or even commendable, in other numerical tasks.’ Yet by and large within chemometrics, preprocessing often seems to be carried out with little understanding of its fundamental efect on the structure of the data.”  相似文献

Feeding strategies of earthworms and their influence on soil processes are often inferred from morphological, behavioral and physiological traits. We used (13)C and (15)N natural abundance in earthworms, soils and plants to explore patterns of resource utilization by different species of earthworms in three tropical ecosystems in Puerto Rico. In a high altitude dwarf forest, native earthworms Trigaster longissimus and Estherella sp. showed less (15)N enrichment ((15)N = 3-6 per thousand) than exotic Pontoscolex corethrurus ((15)N =7-9 per thousand) indicating different food sources or stronger isotopic discrimination by the latter. Conversely, in a lower altitude tabonuco forest, Estherella sp. and P. corethrurus overlapped completely in (15)N enrichment ((15)N = 6-9 per thousand), suggesting the potential for interspecific competition for N resources. A tabonuco forest converted to pasture contained only P. corethrurus which were less enriched in (15)N than those in the forest sites, but more highly enriched in (13)C suggesting assimilation of C from the predominant C(4) grass. These results support the utility of stable isotopes to delineate resource partitioning and potential competitive interactions among earthworm species. High pressure processing (HPP) has been shown to reduce microbial concentration in foods. The mechanisms of microbial inactivation by HPP have been associated with damage to cell membranes. The real-time response of bacteria to HPP was measured to elucidate the mechanisms of inactivation, which can aid in designing more effective processes. Different pressure cycling conditions were used to expose Enterobacter aerogenes cells to HPP. Propidium iodide (PI) was used as a probe, which fluoresces after penetrating cells with damaged membranes and binding with nucleic acids. A HPP vessel with sapphire windows was used for measuring fluorescence in situ. Membrane damage was detected during pressurization and hold time, but not during depressurization. The drop in fluorescence was larger than expected after pressure cycles at higher pressure and longer times. This indicated possible reversible disassociation of ribosomes resulting in additional binding of PI to exposed RNA under pressure and its release after depressurization.  相似文献

Clean [111] oriented silver field emitting tips have been exposed to oxygen at 10?3 Torr for 1 min at temperatures ranging from ? 170 to 200°C. From 50 to 200°C, an adsorption structure is formed that is stable in oxygen. The structure is characterized by intensely emitting regions on either side of enlarged {110}, {210} and {310} faces and a dark region in the (111)-{100} zone line directions. For adsorption from ? 170 to 200°C, the structure of the patterns depends distinctly on the adsorption temperature because the coverages are different and adsorption is activated. Oxygen adsorption at 10?3 Torr for 1 min at 0°C causes an increase in the average work function of 1.15 eV. At 0°C, silver was exposed increasingly at 10?6 Torr until 6100 L was reached. The work function increased progressively by 0.61 eV for this exposure. The {111}, {100}, {311}, {211} and {533} faces are attacked first. Then, the {110} faces are attacked followed by the {210} {310} and {320}. Heating of the adsorption layer formed at 0°C produced no changes in pattern and work function up to 100°C. Between 100 and 200°C, a strong decrease in work function and changes in the pattern result from oxygen penetration into the bulk.  相似文献

Two recent criticisms of Stapp's 1985 proof of an incompatibility between locality and quantum mechanics are clarified. One of these criticisms (charging that the proof requires determinism) is supported by a detailed logical analysis of the locality conditions in the proof. The other criticism (charging that the proof assumes realism) is shown to be based upon a misinterpretation of the rôle of counterfactuals in the proof. The sorption potential for SO4(2-) in humus layer samples from field sites along a deposition gradient was determined experimentally in batch experiments. The Freundlich equation was used to quantify the sorption of added SO4(2-) in humus layer samples and to determine site-dependent sorption parameters. SO4(2-) sorption in humus layers is a concentration-dependent process. The linearity of isotherms reveals that SO4(2-) is reversibly bound in the organic surface layer, as long as soil solution concentrations remain above 26 to 44 mg SO4(2-) L(-1). Natural isotope variations of sulfur in SO4(2-) were analysed to investigate the degree of sorption of dissolved atmospheric and added SO4(2-). Both sulfate species differed significantly in their isotope composition. The pattern of delta34S values for SO4(2-) in all equilibrium solutions confirm the findings from sorption isotherms, showing a close relationship between the sulfur isotope ratios of SO4(2-) in soil solutions and the amount of SO4(2-) sorbed at the humus layer matrix. Stored atmospheric SO4(2-) in humus layers is released at sites where sulfate concentration in throughfall drops below 26 mg SO4(2-) L(-1). Concentration of soluble Fe decreased with increasing sulfate sorption, thus supporting the assumption that active Fe for example is important. Iron probably stabilizes the reactive surface of humus complexes and therefore has a positive influence on the SO4(2-) sorption in humus layers.  相似文献

The adsorption of selenium on tungsten and molybdenum field emitters has been studied. Despite the topographical similarity of the two substrates there are marked differences in the migration and localised adsorption of the first two monolayers of selenium. Anomalous behaviour of the emission current and Fowler-Nordheim parameters is found for adsorption on both substrates. Measurements on single crystal planes indicate that this behaviour is not caused by localised growth or clustering effects. It is suggested that the model proposed by Nicolaou and Modinos to explain similar effects during germanium adsorption on tungsten is also applicable in the present case.  相似文献

A distinctive vocalization of the sperm whale, Physeter macrocephalus (=P. catodon), is the coda: a short click sequence with a distinctive stereotyped time pattern [Watkins and Schevill, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 62, 1485-1490 (1977)]. Coda repertoires have been found to vary both geographically and with group affiliation [Weilgart and Whitehead, Behav. Ecol. Sociobiol. 40, 277-285 (1997)]. In this work, the click timings and repetition patterns of sperm whale codas recorded in the Mediterranean Sea are characterized statistically, and the context in which the codas occurred are also taken into consideration. A total of 138 codas were recorded in the central Mediterranean in the years 1985-1996 by several research groups using a number of different detection instruments, including stationary and towed hydrophones, sonobuoys and passive sonars. Nearly all (134) of the recorded codas share the same "3+1" (/// /) click pattern. Coda durations ranged from 456 to 1280 ms, with an average duration of 908 ms and a standard deviation of 176 ms. Most of the codas (a total of 117) belonged to 20 coda series. Each series was produced by an individual, in most cases by a mature male in a small group, and consisted of between 2 and 16 codas, emitted in one or more "bursts" of 1 to 13 codas spaced fairly regularly in time. The mean number of codas in a burst was 3.46, and the standard deviation was 2.65. The time interval ratios within a coda are parameterized by the coda duration and by the first two interclick intervals normalized by coda duration. These three parameters remained highly stable within each coda series, with coefficients of variation within the series averaging less than 5%. The interval ratios varied somewhat across the data sets, but were highly stable over 8 of the 11 data sets, which span 11 years and widely dispersed geographic locations. Somewhat different interval ratios were observed in the other three data sets; in one of these data sets, the variant codas were produced by a young whale. Two sets of presumed sperm whale codas recorded in 1996 had 5- and 6-click patterns; the observation of these new patterns suggests that sperm whale codas in the Mediterranean may have more variations than previously believed.  相似文献
