Using computer simulations, we demonstrate an optical cascadable AND gate based on soliton interaction in a fiber Bragg grating. A single soliton that is launched into the device is backreflected. When two solitons are launched, one of the solitons is transmitted while the other is backreflected. The time delay between the solitons may be few times longer than the duration of the solitons. We show that the interaction causes an increase in the frequency of one of the solitons that enables its transmission through the grating bandgap.

The effect of the third-order filter term on soliton interactions in optical fibers with guiding filters is theoretically analyzed. We find that this term causes a significant difference to the interaction of solitons through filters among the regimes of without sliding, with up- and down-sliding frequencies of filters. It is shown that the interaction between solitons can be more effectively suppressed by up-sliding filters than that by down-sliding filters in the presence of the third-order filter term. Moreover, the third-order filter term is found to play a positive role in suppressing soliton interactions in the case of non-sliding.

The dynamics of short (of the order of a few wave periods) intense optical pulses and interaction of short optical solitons in fibers are considered within the framework of the third-order nonlinear Schrodinger equation. It is shown that an initial pulse tends to one or a few short solitons plus a linear quasiperiodic wave when the third-order linear dispersion and nonlinear dispersion have parameters of the same sign. The number and parameters of the solitons depend on the magnitudes of initial pulse parameters. Interaction of short optical solitons having different amplitudes is accompanied by radiation of part of the wave field from the area of interaction, by an increase of the soliton with larger amplitude, and a decrease of the soliton with a smaller one. Propagation of solitons in optical fibers is studied taking into account the polarization mode dispersion (PMD) effect. We show that the soliton interaction caused by the radiation emitted by solitons due to the PMD disorder leads to soliton jitter, and we find its statistical properties. The theoretical predictions are justified by direct numerical simulations.

(2+1)‐dimensional optical spatial solitons have become a major field of research in nonlinear physics throughout the last decade due to their potential in adaptive optical communication technologies. With the help of photorefractive crystals that supply the required type of nonlinearity for soliton generation, we are able to demonstrate experimentally the formation, the dynamic properties, and especially the interaction of solitary waves, which were so far only known from general soliton theory. Among the complex interaction scenarios of scalar solitons, we reveal a distinct behavior denoted as anomalous interaction, which is unique in soliton‐supporting systems. Further on, we realize highly parallel, light‐induced waveguide configurations based on photorefractive screening solitons that give rise to technical applications towards waveguide couplers and dividers as well as all‐optical information processing devices where light is controlled by light itself. Finally, we demonstrate the generation, stability and propagation dynamics of multi‐component or vector solitons, multipole transverse optical structures bearing a complex geometry. In analogy to the particle‐light dualism of scalar solitons, various types of vector solitons can ‐ in a broader sense ‐ be interpreted as molecules of light.

Nonlinear dissipative systems display the full (3+1)D spatiotemporal dynamics of stable optical solitons. We review recent results that were obtained within the complex cubic-quintic Ginzburg-Landau equation model. Numerical simulations reveal the existence of stationary bell-shaped (3+1)D solitons for both anomalous and normal chromatic dispersion regimes, as well as the formation of double soliton complexes. We provide additional insight concerning the possible dynamics of these soliton complexes, consider collision cases between two solitons, and discuss the ways nonstationary evolution can lead to optical pattern formation.

Twin-core optical fibers are applied in such fields as the optical sensing and optical communication, and propagation of the pulses,Gauss beams and laser beams in the non-Kerr media is reported.Studied in this paper are the coupled cubic-quintic nonlinear Schrodinger equations with variable coefficients, which describe the effects of quintic nonlinearity for the ultrashort optical pulse propagation in a twin-core optical fiber or non-Kerr medium.Based on the integrable conditions, bilinear forms are derived, and dark-dark soliton solutions can be constructed in terms of the Gramian via the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili hierarchy reduction.Propagation and interaction of the dark-dark solitons are presented and discussed through the graphic analysis. With different values of the delayed nonlinear response effect b(z),where z represents direction of the propagation, the linear-and parabolic-shaped one dark-dark soltions can be derived.Interactions between the parabolic-and periodic-shaped two dark-dark solitons are presented with b(z) as the linear and periodic functions, respectively.Directions of velocities of the two dark-dark solitons vary with z and the amplitudes of the solitons remain unchanged can be observed.Interactions between the two dark-dark solitons of different types are displayed, and we observe that the velocity of one soliton is zero and direction of the velocity of the other soliton vary with z.We find that those interactions are elastic.

We report on the experimental observation of passive harmonic mode locking of bunches of single-pulse solitons or twin-pulse
solitons in an Erbium-doped fiber ring laser. Experimental investigations on the phenomenon revealed that, although the soliton
interaction between the adjacent single-/twin-pulse solitons in a bunch is weaker than that of the pulse interaction in the
twin-pulse solitons, a soliton bunch could also function as a unit and form the state of passively harmonic mode-locking.
Harmonic mode-locking is one of the intrinsic characteristics of soliton emission in passively mode-locked fiber ring lasers.
It can be formed based on the single-pulse soliton, twin-pulse soliton, or bunch of solitons.

We demonstrate theoretically and subsequently observe in experiment a novel type of soliton interaction when a pair of closely spaced spatial optical solitons as a whole is made partially incoherent. We explain how the character of the soliton interaction can be controlled by the total partial incoherence, and show a possibility to change the soliton interaction from attractive to repulsive, or vice versa, near a certain threshold in the coherence parameter.

We investigate the nonlinear tunneling of optical solitons through both dispersion and nonlinear barriers by employing the exact solution of the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation with variable coefficients. The extensive numerical simulations show that the optical solitons can be efficiently compressed when they pass through adequate engineered nonlinear barriers. A cascade compression system in a dispersion decreasing fiber with nonlinear barriers on an exponential background is proposed and the cascade compression of optical pulses is further investigated in detail. Finally, the stability to various initial perturbations of the cascade compressed optical soliton and the interaction between two neighboring compressed solitons were investigated too.

We realize an absolute position control of drifting dissipative optical solitons by injecting an incoherent amplitude parameter gradient onto the nonlinear optical system. This allows for two-dimensional, arbitrary control patterns. The control of the soliton drift velocity is studied applying a periodic, hexagonally shaped modulation. The guiding of dissipative solitons by one- and two-dimensional parameter modulations is demonstrated. Furthermore, one-dimensional, line-shaped parameter modulations are designed to act as barriers for dissipative solitons, allowing implementations of position selectors for solitons. The interaction of dissipative optical solitons with barriers is studied for different barrier parameters.

We investigate the stability and collision dynamics of dissipative matter-wave solitons formed in a quasi-onedimensional Bose-Einstein condensate with linear gain and three-body recombination loss perturbed by a weak optical lattice. It is shown that the linear gain can modify the stability of the single dissipative soliton moving in the optical lattice. The collision dynamics of two individual dissipative matter-wave solitons explicitly depend on the linear gain parameter, and they display different dynamical behaviors in both the in-phase and out-of-phase interaction regimes.

We study the dynamics of bright solitons formed in a Bose-Einstein condensate with attractive atomic interactions perturbed by a weak bichromatic optical lattice potential. The lattice depth is a biperiodic function of time with a zero mean, which realizes a flashing ratchet for matter-wave solitons. We find that the average velocity of a soliton and the soliton current induced by the ratchet depend on the number of atoms in the soliton. As a consequence, soliton transport can be induced through scattering of different solitons. In the regime when matter-wave solitons are narrow compared to the lattice period the dynamics is well described by the effective Hamiltonian theory.

In the biased guest-host photorefractive polymer, the Manakov equations can be used to describe the optical soliton propagation and interaction. Hereby for such equations, via the Hirota method and symbolic computation, analytic soliton solutions in the bright-dark and dark-dark forms are obtained. Based on the choice of photorefractive polymer parameter and incident-optical-beam parameter, the bright-dark and dark-dark solitons as well as their interaction can occur in the polymer when the total intensity is much lower than the background illumination, and our analysis indicates that the incident light with different polarization directions influence little on the soliton propagation. γ, representing the soliton intensity far away from the soliton center, determines the appearance of bright or dark soliton under the background illumination. Through the graphic and asymptotic analysis on the two-soliton solutions along with the different γ, we find that there exist the elastic and inelastic interactions between the bright-dark solitons, while the interactions between the dark-dark solitons are always elastic.

We investigate the propagation of optical solitons interacting with linear defects in the medium. We show that solitons exhibit a wave-particle dualism versus power, i.e., depending on the relative size of soliton and defect, responsible for a soliton trajectory dependent on its waist.
