Conditions on a graphG are presented which are sufficient to guarantee thatG–Z contains a 1-factor, whereZ is a set of edges ofG of restricted cardinality. These conditions provide generalizations of several known results and, further, establish the result that ifG is anr-regular, (r–2)-edge-connected graph (r2) of even order andz is an integer with 0zr–1 such thatG contains fewer thanr–z edge cut sets of cardinalityr–2, thenG–Z has a 1-factor for each setZ ofz edges ofG.  相似文献

Let F be a graph which contains an edge whose deletion reduces its chromatic number. We prove tight bounds on the number of copies of F in a graph with a prescribed number of vertices and edges. Our results extend those of Simonovits (1968) [8], who proved that there is one copy of F, and of Rademacher, Erd?s (1962) [1] and [2] and Lovász and Simonovits (1983) [4], who proved similar counting results when F is a complete graph. One of the simplest cases of our theorem is the following new result. There is an absolute positive constant c such that if n is sufficiently large and 1?q<cn, then every n vertex graph with ⌊n2/4⌋+q edges contains at least

For 0<1 and graphsG andH, writeGH if any -proportion of the edges ofG spans at least one copy ofH inG. As customary, writeK r for the complete graph onr vertices. We show that for every fixed real >0 there exists a constantC=C() such that almost every random graphG n,p withp=p(n)Cn –2/5 satisfiesG n,p 2/3+ K 4. The proof makes use of a variant of Szemerédi's regularity lemma for sparse graphs and is based on a certain superexponential estimate for the number of pseudo-random tripartite graphs whose triangles are not too well distributed. Related results and a general conjecture concerningH-free subgraphs of random graphs in the spirit of the Erds-Stone theorem are discussed. The first author was partially supported by FAPESP (Proc. 93/0603-1) and by CNPq (Proc. 300334/93-1 and ProTeM-CC-II Project ProComb). For a finite or infinite graphG, theGallai graph (G) ofG is defined as the graph whose vertex set is the edge setE(G) ofG; two distinct edges ofG are adjacent in (G) if they are incident but do not span a triangle inG. For any positive integert, thetth iterated Gallai graph t (G) ofG is defined by ( t–1(G)), where 0(G):=G. A graph is said to beGallai-mortal if some of its iterated Gallai graphs finally equals the empty graph. In this paper we characterize Gallai-mortal graphs in several ways.  相似文献

A pebbling move on a graph consists of taking two pebbles off of one vertex and placing one pebble on an adjacent vertex. In the traditional pebbling problem we try to reach a specified vertex of the graph by a sequence of pebbling moves. In this paper we investigate the case when every vertex of the graph must end up with at least one pebble after a series of pebbling moves. The cover pebbling number of a graph is the minimum number of pebbles such that however the pebbles are initially placed on the vertices of the graph we can eventually put a pebble on every vertex simultaneously. We find the cover pebbling numbers of trees and some other graphs. We also consider the more general problem where (possibly different) given numbers of pebbles are required for the vertices.  相似文献

It is shown that ifG is a graph which is contractible or dismantlable or finitely ball-Helly, and without infinite paths; or which is bounded, finitely ball-Helly and without infinite simplices then: (i) any contraction ofG stabilizes a finite simplex; and (ii)G contains a finite simplex which is invariant under any automorphism.  相似文献

For a graphG, the switched graphS v (G) ofG at a vertexv is the graph obtained fromG by deleting the edges ofG incident withv and adding the edges of incident withv. Properties of graphs whereS v (G) G or are studied. This concept is extended to the partial complementS H (G) where H . The investigation here centers around the existence of setsH for whichS H (G) G. A parameter is introduced which measures how near a graph is to being self-complementary.  相似文献

In this paper we present a characterization of connected graphs of order 2n with domination numbern. Using this class of graphs, we determine an infinite class of graphs with the property that the domination number of the product of any two is precisely the product of the domination numbers.  相似文献

A graphG ismaximally nonhamiltonian iffG is not hamiltonian butG + e is hamiltonian for each edgee inG c, i.e., any two non-adjacent vertices ofG are ends of a hamiltonian path. Bollobás posed the problem of finding the least number of edges,f(n), possible in a maximally nonhamiltonian graph of ordern. Results of Bondy show thatf(n) 3/2 n forn 7. We exhibit graphs of even ordern 36 for which the bound is attained. These graphs are the snarks,J k, of Isaacs and mild variations of them. For oddn 55 we construct graphs from the graphsJ k showing that in this case,f(n) = 3n + 1/2 or 3n + 3/2 and leave the determination of which is correct as an open problem. Finally we note that the graphsJ k, k 7 are hypohamiltonian cubics with girth 6.  相似文献

A theorem of N. Terai and T. Hibi for finite distributive lattices and a theorem of Hibi for finite modular lattices (suggested by R.P. Stanley) are equivalent to the following: if a finite distributive or modular lattice of rank d contains a complemented rank 3 interval, then the lattice is (d+1)-connected.In this paper, the following generalization is proved: Let L be a (finite or infinite) semimodular lattice of rank d that is not a chain (dN0). Then the comparability graph of L is (d+1)-connected if and only if L has no simplicial elements, where zL is simplicial if the elements comparable to z form a chain.  相似文献

Several constructions of 4-critical planar graphs are given. These provide answers to two questions of B. Grünbaum and give improved bounds for the maximum edge density of such graphs.  相似文献

A family of ladder graphs, used by Youngs in his work on the Heawood conjecture, is used to provide constructions of Skolem and related triple systems, triangular biembeddings of certain complete graphs, and genus embeddings of certain complete multipartite graphs.  相似文献

Generalizing earlier results of Moran and Strauss (Mathematika 27, 1980, 213–244) and of Carlson and Simpson (Adv. in Math. 53, 1984, 265–290) it was shown in Prömel and Voigts (Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 291, 1985, 198–201) that Baire sets ofk-parameter words are Ramsey. Motivated by the duality between category and measure, we investigate in this paper measurable sets ofk parameter words. We show that measurable sets of ascendingk-parameter words are Ramsey, whereas in general measurable sets ofk-parameter words fail to be Ramsey.  相似文献

The area of judicious partitioning considers the general family of partitioning problems in which one seeks to optimize several parameters simultaneously, and these problems have been widely studied in various combinatorial contexts. In this paper, we study essentially the most fundamental judicious partitioning problem for directed graphs, which naturally extends the classical Max Cut problem to this setting: we seek bipartitions in which many edges cross in each direction. It is easy to see that a minimum outdegree condition is required in order for the problem to be nontrivial, and we prove that every directed graph with m edges and minimum outdegree at least two admits a bipartition in which at least edges cross in each direction. We also prove that if the minimum outdegree is at least three, then the constant can be increased to . If the minimum outdegree tends to infinity with n, then the constant increases to . All of these constants are best‐possible, and provide asymptotic answers to a question of Alex Scott. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Random Struct. Alg., 48, 147–170, 2016  相似文献

We prove that the size of the largest face of a 4-critical planar graph with 4 is at most one half the number of its vertices. Letf(n) denote the maximum of the sizes of largest faces of all such graphs withn vertices (n sufficiently large). We say that a 0-1 matrix A avoids another 0-1 matrix (pattern) P if no matrix P obtained from P by increasing some of the entries is a submatrix of A. Following the lead of (SIAM J. Discrete Math. 4 (1991) 17-27; J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 55 (1990) 316-320; Discrete Math. 103 (1992) 233-251) and other papers we investigate n by n 0-1 matrices avoiding a pattern P and the maximal number ex(n,P) of 1 entries they can have. Finishing the work of [8] we find the order of magnitude of ex(n,P) for all patterns P with four 1 entries. We also investigate certain collections of excluded patterns. These sets often yield interesting extremal functions different from the functions obtained from any one of the patterns considered.  相似文献

We prove that the edge set of an arbitrary simple graphG onn vertices can be covered by at mostn−[log2 n]+1 complete bipartite subgraphs ofG. If the weight of a subgraph is the number of its vertices, then there always exists a cover with total weightc(n 2/logn) and this bound is sharp apart from a constant factor. Our result answers a problem of T. G. Tarján. Dedicated to Paul Erdős on his seventieth birthday  相似文献
