The rapid development of renewable-energy technologies such as water splitting, rechargeable metal–air batteries, and fuel cells requires highly efficient electrocatalysts capable of the oxygen-reduction reaction (ORR) and the oxygen-evolution reaction (OER). Herein, we report a facile sonication-driven synthesis to deposit the molecular manganese vanadium oxide precursor [Mn4V4O17(OAc)3]3− on multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). Thermal conversion of this composite at 900 °C gives nanostructured manganese vanadium oxides/carbides, which are stably linked to the MWCNTs. The resulting composites show excellent electrochemical reactivity for ORR and OER, and significant reactivity enhancements compared with the precursors and a Pt/C reference are reported. Notably, even under harsh acidic conditions, long-term OER activity at low overpotential is reported. In addition, we report exceptional activity of the composites for the industrially important Cl2 evolution from an aqueous HCl electrolyte. The new composite material shows how molecular deposition routes leading to highly active and stable multifunctional electrocatalysts can be developed. The facile design could in principle be extended to multiple catalyst classes by tuning of the molecular metal oxide precursor employed.  相似文献

Transition‐metal oxides as electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) provide a promising route to face the energy and environmental crisis issues. Although palmeirite oxide A2Mo3O8 as OER catalyst has been explored, the correlation between its active sites (tetrahedral or octahedral) and OER performance has been elusive. Now, magnetic Co2Mo3O8@NC‐800 composed of highly crystallized Co2Mo3O8 nanosheets and ultrathin N‐rich carbon layer is shown to be an efficient OER catalyst. The catalyst exhibits favorable performance with an overpotential of 331 mV@10 mA cm?2 and 422 mV@40 mA cm?2, and a full water‐splitting electrolyzer with it as anode catalyst shows a cell voltage of 1.67 V@10 mA cm?2 in alkaline. Combined HAADFSTEM, magnetic, and computational results show that factors influencing the OER performance can be attributed to the tetrahedral Co sites (high spin, t23e4), which improve the OER kinetics of rate‐determining step to form *OOH.  相似文献

Developing low-cost and high-activity transition metal oxide electrocatalysts for an efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at a large current density is highly demanded for industrial application and remains a big challenge. Herein, we report vertically aligned cobalt doped Ni–Fe based oxide (Co–NiO/Fe2O3) arrays as a robust OER electrocatalyst via a simple method combining hydrothermal reaction with heat treatment. Density functional theory calculation and XRD Rietveld refinement reveal that Co preferentially occupies the Ni sites compared to Fe in the Ni–Fe based oxides. The electronic structures of the Co–NiO/Fe2O3 could be further optimized, leading to the improvement of the intrinsic electronic conductivity and d-band center energy level and the decrease in the reaction energy barrier of the rate-determining step for the OER, thus accelerating its OER electrocatalytic activity. The Co–NiO/Fe2O3 nanosheet arrays display state-of-the-art OER activities at a large current density for industrial demands among Fe–Co–Ni based oxide electrocatalysts, which only require an ultra-low overpotential of 230 mV at a high current density of 500 mA cm−2, and exhibit superb durability at 500 mA cm−2 for at least 300 h without obvious degradation. The Co–NiO/Fe2O3 nanosheet arrays also have a small Tafel slope of 33.9 mV dec−1, demonstrating fast reaction kinetics. This work affords a simple and effective method to design and construct transition metal oxide based electrocatalysts for efficient water oxidation.

Co–NiO/Fe2O3 nanosheets featuring Co substitution on Ni sites can effectively regulate electronic structures and exhibit high OER activities with low overpotential (η500 = 230 mV), small Tafel slope (33.9 mV dec−1) and superb durability for 300 h.  相似文献

The development of a general strategy for synthesizing hierarchical porous transition‐metal oxide and chalcogenide mesoporous nanotubes, is still highly challenging. Herein we present a facile self‐template strategy to synthesize Co3O4 mesoporous nanotubes with outstanding performances in both the electrocatalytic oxygen‐evolution reaction (OER) and Li‐ion battery via the thermal‐oxidation‐induced transformation of cheap and easily‐prepared Co‐Asp(cobalt–aspartic acid) nanowires. The initially formed thin layers on the precursor surfaces, oxygen‐induced outward diffusion of interior precursors, the gas release of organic oxidation, and subsequent Kirkendall effect are important for the appearance of the mesoporous nanotubes. This self‐template strategy of low‐cost precursors is found to be a versatile method to prepare other functional mesoporous nanotubes of transition‐metal oxides and chalcogenides, such as NiO, NiCo2O4, Mn5O8, CoS2 and CoSe2.  相似文献

Electrocatalytic water splitting into H2 and O2 is a key technology for carbon‐neutral energy. Here, we report a modular materials design leading to noble metal‐free composite electrocatalysts, which combine high electrical conductivity, high OER and HER reactivity and high durability. The scalable bottom‐up fabrication allows the stable deposition of mixed metal oxide nanostructures with different functionalities on copper foam electrodes. The composite catalyst shows sustained OER and HER activity in 0.1 m aqueous KOH over prolonged periods (t>10 h) at low overpotentials (OER: ≈300 mV; HER: ≈100 mV) and high faradaic efficiencies (OER: ≈100 %, HER: ≈98 %). The new synthetic concept will enable the development of multifunctional, mixed metal oxide composites as high‐performance electrocatalysts for challenging energy conversion and storage reactions.  相似文献

The mechanism of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is somehow related to that of the pseudocapacitance of metal oxide electrocatalysts in potentials lower than the OER standard potential. Although pseudocapacitance of metal oxide electrocatalysts is usually studied in the investigations of OER, this dependence is not profoundly inspected. During the pseudocapacitive behavior, some high valence cations are formed over a broad range of potential in an underpotential region before the formal redox potential. This is due to the exceptional activities of some sites, which are capable of further oxidation at the OER potential to form active sites for the OER electrocatalysis. Therefore, a well-defined pseudocapacitance is somehow a requirement for the OER performance. Almost all OER electrocatalysts reported in the literature display considerable pseudocapacitive behavior at the lower potentials. The corresponding pseudocapacitance explains the difference between the OER activities of IrO2 and RuO2. Here, the focus is on noble metals as the well-defined OER electrocatalysts, but the reasoning can be extended to other metal oxides. The electrochemical behaviors including the pseudocapacitance of almost all inexpensive OER electrocatalysts such as cobalt oxide, nickel oxide, etc. are similar to that of IrO2 as described here. Moreover, despite the high cost, noble metals still have the practical potentials for OER, subject to further enhancement in the OER efficiency or as additives in inexpensive electrocatalysts.  相似文献

Rational design of highly active and durable electrocatalysts for oxygen reactions is critical for rechargeable metal–air batteries. Herein, we report the design and development of composite electrocatalysts based on transition metal oxide nanocrystals embedded in a nitrogen‐doped, partially graphitized carbon framework. Benefiting from the unique pomegranate‐like architecture, the composite catalysts possess abundant active sites, strong synergetic coupling, enhanced electron transfer, and high efficiencies in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The Co3O4‐based composite electrocatalyst exhibited a high half‐wave potential of 0.842 V for ORR, and a low overpotential of only 450 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm?2 for OER. A single‐cell zinc–air battery was also fabricated with superior durability, holding great promise in the practical implementation of rechargeable metal–air batteries.  相似文献

Great efforts in developing clean electrochemical water splitting technology leads to the rational design and synthesis of highly efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts with low overpotential and fast reaction kinetics. Herein, we focus on the role that morphology and composition play in the OER performance to rationally design freestanding 3D porous NiCo2O4 nanosheets with metal valence states alteration and abundant oxygen vacancies as robust electrocatalysts towards water splitting. Besides metal valence‐state alteration, surface modification regarding the evolution of oxygen vacancies is facilely realized upon the sodium borohydride treatment, which is beneficial for the enhanced OER performance. Taking advantage of the porous nanostructures and abundant surface activity sites with high reactivity, the resultant nanostructures exhibit excellent OER activity and stability in alkaline electrolytes that outperform that of pristine NiCo2O4 and commercial RuO2, thus holding great potential for the water splitting.  相似文献

Successful design of reversible oxygen electrocatalysts does not only require to consider their activity towards the oxygen reduction (ORR) and the oxygen evolution reactions (OER), but also their electrochemical stability at alternating ORR and OER operating conditions, which is important for potential applications in reversible electrolyzers/fuel cells or metal/air batteries. We show that the combination of catalyst materials containing stable ORR active sites with those containing stable OER active sites may result in a stable ORR/OER catalyst if each of the active components can satisfy the current demand of their respective reaction. We compare the ORR/OER performances of oxides of Mn (stable ORR active sites), Fe (stable OER active sites), and bimetallic Mn0.5Fe0.5 (reversible ORR/OER catalyst) supported on oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes. Despite the instability of Mn and Fe oxide for the OER and the ORR, respectively, Mn0.5Fe0.5 exhibits high stability for both reactions.

Herein, we show that the performance of mesostructured cobalt oxide electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) can be significantly enhanced by coupling of silver species. Various analysis techniques including pair distribution function and Rietveld refinement, X‐ray absorption spectroscopy at synchrotron as well as advanced electron microscopy revealed that silver exists as metallic Ag particles and well‐dispersed Ag2O nanoclusters within the mesostructure. The benefits of this synergy are twofold for OER: highly conductive metallic Ag improves the charge transfer ability of the electrocatalysts while ultra‐small Ag2O clusters provide the centers that can uptake Fe impurities from KOH electrolyte and boost the catalytic efficiency of Co–Ag oxides. The current density of mesostructured Co3O4 at 1.7 VRHE is increased from 102 to 211 mA cm?2 with incorporation of silver spices. This work presents the dual role of silver moieties and demonstrates a simple method to increase the OER activity of Co3O4.  相似文献

Transition metal oxides, especially perovskites, have been considered effective electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution (OER) and oxygen reduction (ORR) reactions in an alkaline solution. Here, a series of lanthanum cobalt rhodium oxide perovskites with the chemical formula LaCo1-xRhxO3 (LCRO, 0.1 ≤ x ≤ 0.70) were prepared through the approach of solid-phase synthesis and their bifunctional electrocatalytic activity was assessed for both the OER and ORR. The crystallinity, morphology, surface, and electrocatalytic features of the LCRO were significantly correlated with the rhodium content. The LaCo0.7Rh0.3O3 electrocatalysts with x = 0.3 showed enhanced electrocatalytic bifunctional performance with a substantially lower OER/ORR onset potential of 1.38/0.73 V vs HRE, smaller Tafel slope (116/90 mV/dec), and low charge-transfer resistance, which is the most efficient catalyst among the other studied ratios and superior to the pristine lanthanum cobalt oxide benchmark electrocatalysts. The LaCo0.7Rh0.3O3 electrode exhibit good bifunctional electrocatalytic behavior and long-term durability with an OER and ORR onset potential gap (ΔE = EOER ? EORR) of only 0.65 V, which could be credited to the enriched oxygen vacancies, lattice expansion and the improved electrical conductivity upon the doping of larger size of Rh ions. The LaCo1-xRhxO3 catalysts are obtained from abundant materials that have the potential of highly-active bifunctional OER and ORR electrocatalysts.  相似文献

The integration of heterometallic units and nanostructures into metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) used for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) can enhance the electrocatalytic performance and help elucidate underlying mechanisms. We have synthesized a series of stable MOFs (CTGU‐10a1–d1) based on trinuclear metal carboxylate clusters and a hexadentate carboxylate ligand with a (6,6)‐connected nia net. We also present a strategy to synthesize hierarchical bimetallic MOF nanostructures (CTGU‐10a2–d2). Among these, CTGU‐10c2 is the best material for the OER, with an overpotential of 240 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm?2 and a Tafel slope of 58 mV dec?1. This is superior to RuO2 and confirms CTGU‐10c2 as one of the few known high‐performing pure‐phase MOF‐OER electrocatalysts. Notably, bimetallic CTGU‐10b2 and c2 show an improved OER activity over monometallic CTGU‐10a2 and d2. Both DFT and experiments show that the remarkable OER performance of CTGU‐10c2 is due to the presence of unsaturated metal sites, a hierarchical nanobelt architecture, and the Ni–Co coupling effect.  相似文献

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of promising materials for diverse heterogeneous catalysis, but they are usually not directly employed for oxygen evolution electrocatalysis. Most reports focus on using MOFs as templates to in situ create efficient electrocatalysts through annealing. Herein, we prepared a series of Fe/Ni‐based trimetallic MOFs (Fe/Ni/Co(Mn)‐MIL‐53 accordingly to the Material of Institute Lavoisier) by solvothermal synthesis, which can be directly adopted as highly efficient electrocatalysts. The Fe/Ni/Co(Mn)‐MIL‐53 shows a volcano‐type oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity as a function of compositions. The optimized Fe/Ni2.4/Co0.4‐MIL‐53 can reach a current density of 20 mA cm?2 at low overpotential of 236 mV with a small Tafel slope of 52.2 mV dec?1. In addition, the OER performance of these MOFs can be further enhanced by directly being grown on nickel foam (NF).  相似文献

Increasing energy demands have stimulated intense research activity on cleaner energy conversion such as regenerative fuel cells and reversible metal–air batteries. It is highly challenging but desirable to develop low‐cost bifunctional catalysts for both the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), the lack of which is currently one of the major limiting components towards commercialization of these technologies. Here, we have conducted a systematic study on the OER and ORR performances of the Ruddlesden–Popper family of Lan+1NinO3n+1 (n=1, 2, 3, and ∞) in an alkaline medium for the first time. It is apparent that the Ni?O bond lengths and the hyperstoichiometric oxides in the rock‐salt layers correlate with the ORR activities, whereas the OER activities appear to be influenced by the OH? content on the surface of the compounds. In our case, the electronic configuration fails to predict the electrocatalytic activity of these compounds. This work provides guidelines to develop new electrocatalysts with improved performances.  相似文献

A promising family of mixed transition‐metal oxides (MTMOs) (designated as AxB3‐xO4; A, B=Co, Ni, Zn, Mn, Fe, etc.) with stoichiometric or even non‐stoichiometric compositions, typically in a spinel structure, has recently attracted increasing research interest worldwide. Benefiting from their remarkable electrochemical properties, these MTMOs will play significant roles for low‐cost and environmentally friendly energy storage/conversion technologies. In this Review, we summarize recent research advances in the rational design and efficient synthesis of MTMOs with controlled shapes, sizes, compositions, and micro‐/nanostructures, along with their applications as electrode materials for lithium‐ion batteries and electrochemical capacitors, and efficient electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction in metal–air batteries and fuel cells. Some future trends and prospects to further develop advanced MTMOs for next‐generation electrochemical energy storage/conversion systems are also presented.  相似文献

Designing highly efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays a key role in the development of various renewable energy storage and conversion devices. In this work, we developed metallic Co4N porous nanowire arrays directly grown on flexible substrates as highly active OER electrocatalysts for the first time. Benefiting from the collaborative advantages of metallic character, 1D porous nanowire arrays, and unique 3D electrode configuration, surface oxidation activated Co4N porous nanowire arrays/carbon cloth achieved an extremely small overpotential of 257 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2, and a low Tafel slope of 44 mV dec−1 in an alkaline medium, which is the best OER performance among reported Co‐based electrocatalysts to date. Moreover, in‐depth mechanistic investigations demonstrate the active phases are the metallic Co4N core inside with a thin cobalt oxides/hydroxides shell during the OER process. Our finding introduces a new concept to explore the design of high‐efficiency OER electrocatalysts.  相似文献

Designing active and stable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts are vitally important to various energy conversion devices. Herein, we introduce elements Ni and Mn into (Co)tet(Co2)octO4 nanosheets (NSs) at fixed geometrical sites, including Mnoct, Nioct, and Nitet, to optimize the initial geometrical structure and modulate the CoCo2O4 surface from oxygen-excess to oxygen-deficiency. The pristine (Ni,Mn)-(Co)tet(Co2)octO4 NSs shows excellent OER activity with an overpotential of 281.6 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2. Moreover, without damaging their initial activity, the activated (Act)-(Ni,Mn)-(Co)tet(Co2)octO4 NSs after surface reconstruction exhibit long-term stability of 100 h under 10 mA cm−2, 50 mA cm−2, or even 100 mA cm−2. The optimal balance between electroactivity and stability leads to remarkable OER performances, providing a pivotal guideline for designing ideal electrocatalysts and inspiring more works to focus on the dynamic change of each occupation site component.  相似文献

Perovskite‐based electrocatalysts are one of the most promising materials for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), but their activity and durability are still far from desirable. Herein, we demonstrate that the double perovskite LaFexNi1?xO3 (LFNO) nanorods (NRs) can be adopted as highly active and stable OER electrocatalysts. The optimized LFNO‐II NRs with Ni/Fe ratio of 8:2 achieve a low overpotential of 302 mV at 10 mA cm?2 and a small Tafel slope of 50 mV dec?1, outperforming those of the commercial Ir/C. The LFNO‐II NRs also show high OER stability with slight current decrease after 20 h. The enhanced activity is explained by the improved surface area, tailored electronic structure as well as strong hybridization between O and Ni.  相似文献

The correlation between metal coordination and electrocatalytic water oxidation performance is elusive in many cobalt‐based materials. Herein, we designed an ideal Co phosphate‐based platform to explore the effect of coordination environment on oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity. The cobalt geometry was modulated from octahedral to tetrahedral by simple removal of water ligands in Co3(PO4)2?8 H2O. Other features except the coordination structure in the two autologous materials remain similar. The two analogues display the same OER kinetics, but the anhydrous Co3(PO4)2 exhibits a greatly enhanced OER activity. On the basis of Raman and operando XAS results, the higher intrinsic activity of the Co tetrahedral sites is because they facilitate the formation of active high valent cobalt (hydr)oxide intermediates during OER. This work not only brings insights of OER on Co‐based electrocatalysts but also provides a reference system to study the effect of metal geometry on electrocatalysis.  相似文献
